Chocolate Masks

October 29, 2009 by Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

mas 001

Inspired by this post at Some Say Cacao, I added a mask mould to my last order from Candyland Crafts. Each mask was 11cm long and beautifully detailed.  A boxed set of three made the perfect birthday present for my friend Julie.

Overambitious as always, I tried decorating the finished masks with piped tempered white chocolate. The idea proved to be far simpler  in planning than actual execution.   I am tragically rubbish at piping…

I ended up with an excess of white chocolate, which I moulded into a white and dark chocolate mask.  It came out looking like carved marble!

The white one does look like it is made of porcelain….. a sign of how good you are at tempering chocolate!

I am the lucky recipient of the ‘boxed set’ …and ,yes, Celia, I know they are meant to be eaten, but it’s really tempting to frame them because they are beautiful!

You make me want to learn to do with chocolate….. Lovely masks, perfect as gifts

Thank you all! Julie, I’m glad you liked them, as they were great fun to make!

WOW I cannot believe them. They are excellent. So see you at the Salon next year madam.

I must get cracking on ordering some molds. You are so right about christmas gifts and this year I am going to be brave and make them too. Well, my plan is to make some sort of chocolate creation tailored for the recipient … so I’m compiling my list now that Halloween is over!

Good for you, Gillian! I reckon I’d love any Christmas gift you made. You have the added advantage of having Christmas in winter – over here, it can be 35C on Christmas day. Makes giving chocolate gifts just that little bit tricky…

You’re better than I – we don’t tailor each gift, except in a few special instances – instead we bake and cook in batches. At the moment I have lots of mini fruit and nut cakes in the oven, and we’ll probably try and do a large batch of jam as well.

Just ordered lots of goodies from candyland … including the mask molds. Rereading your mask post … can’t wait for delivery!

Gillian, I can’t wait to see what you can do with them! :)

I’d love to be able to paint flowers on the masks, but don’t know how to paint on chocolate. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks…

Use a paintbrush to paint in details with a different type of chocolate before you fill the mould. Masks are so elegant, I love them!
