This month’s IMK is dedicated to Barbara Harris of Winos and Foodies, who passed away yesterday. I hadn’t known Barbara very long, but she was always kind, and a highly respected member of the Australian food blogging community.
The last entry on Barbara’s blog was her joyous June IMK post. Our deepest condolences to her family and friends.
. . . . .
In my kitchen…
…is a beautiful new egg basket, woven from our rosemary prunings by our friend and neighbour Nic. I think it’s a work of art…
In my kitchen…
…are three varieties of apples. The one at the back left are Pink Ladies – an old favourite of ours – but the Rouge Pinks on the right and the Stirma Pippens at the front are both new to us…
In my kitchen…
…are my new Turkish ceramics, purchased from Turkuaz Motif. I loved the matching inside and outside fish! I bought this bowl, perfectly sized for dips and condiments…
…and a matching mini bowl for sauces and oils…
Here is a close up of the tablecloth we bought – our dining room is painted Egyptian red with sage green wood trim – and the tablecloth matches perfectly…
In my kitchen…
…is a Römertopf clay garlic holder, which arrived in the same Peters of Kensington order as the loaf pans…
In my kitchen…
…is the best purchase I’ve made in ages! My new iPod dock takes up very little room, produces a reasonable sound, and lets me cook while dancing around the kitchen to Meat Loaf…
. . . . .
Tell me, what’s happening in your kitchen this month?
If you’d like to do an In My Kitchen post on your own blog, please feel free to do so. We’d love to see what’s happening in your kitchen this month! Please link back to this blog, and let us know when your post is up, and we’ll add it to our monthly listing.

Celia, I am devastated…. How did you find out? I kept in touch with her by email and her last message wasn’t too long ago…
I had not been able to answer due to my move and all, and now I learn she is gone. I am really really devastated, I knew she had a tough battle to fight, but hoped she would win it in the end.
It is too sad
Sally, I’m sorry for your loss. Barbara’s family sent a message out on twitter yesterday. xxx
Sad news indeed about Barbara.
Your basket looks great, your neighbour sure is talented. I love your bowls. I am definitely going to THAT shop!
All the very best to you, Celia. See you soon.
BTW, I have just posted my IMK.
Glenda, I can’t wait! I’m in love with my bowls as well – filled the small one with cornichons and olives last night, and it looked wonderful. I’ll upload a photo to show you.
I’m very sad to hear about Barbara. I’ve followed her blog for a couple of years and tweeted with her often. I participated in her Livestrong yellow heart event too.
Sally, it was very sad news indeed… x
So sorry to hear about your friend Celia.
The friends who made the egg nest are truly clever and gifted. Needless to say I want one !!
Thanks Claire! The egg basket is a work of art, isn’t it? Nic is so creative – she’s been weaving all sorts of amazing shapes, and they’re all very reflective of our neighbourhood, as she’s using dead leaves and vines found on the footpath and people’s yards! :)
I went and read some of Barbara’s posts and her voice really came through, I would imagine that will be some comfort to her husband and sons in time to come.
Lovely IMK……I steal your ipod and docking station with my eyes!
Sue, that is a lovely thought, that we’re all in some way leaving a piece of ourselves on our blogs.
The docking station is just amazing – it’s making me so happy when I’m cooking. The poor kids have to listen to my very bad singing though, and they don’t exactly agree with my taste in music (“Kenny Rogers again, mum?”) :D
Sorry to hear that, Celia! I think this is a lovely post :D
Thanks Nick! Hope the sun is shining in Wales today! :)
So sorry for the loss of your friend. I visited her website this morning and was sad that I hadn’t got to know her sooner. We share a love of heart shapes.
Thanks Deb..
Lovely egg basket. Celia, I am sorry to hear about your friend.
Thanks Pamela. I didn’t know Barbara very well, but she was always lovely. Her blog was a joy.
It is always sad to lose anyone we know, even remotely.
I also like your fish bowls. I like things with color and design, esp in serving dishes.
Pamela, I’m glad you liked them. I love that the design extends to the outside of the bowl – so often I buy something with a pretty design on the inside, and then put food on it and it’s completely covered up! :)
Celia that is so sad about Barbara. I knew she was having treatment for cancer but I had no idea things were so serious. She always left the most wonderful comments on my blog and was clearly the most wonderful person with a great love for her husband and children. That is such a great loss. Love your new items. That garlic container is fabulous for your 40 cloves of garlic recipe. Love how you dance around to meatloaf. Wish you’d give us a demonstration at the restaurant xx
Charlie, it’s very sad indeed.
I would have danced for you at lunch, but I didn’t want to embarrass myself in front of Archie, him being a dancer and all.. ;-)
Good morning Celia. I LOVE that egg basket, it is a work of art! I also love the Turkish ceramics, they are so bright and the fish are lovely. Enjoy your Sunday, thanks again for the foodie fun…my post is linked :)
Thanks Jane! I’ll put your post up right now! :)
i’m so sorry about your friend celia..x
i love the rosemary basket..it’s really special..and i hadn’t heard of those apples either..and the colours in your pottery and tablecloth are so vibrant, rich and beautiful..
i love the singing meat loaf too.. :)
Jane, thank you. The apples are new – I didn’t even know we grew those varieties here, and my rosemary basket is such a treasured item.. :)
Good morning Celia, it’s lovely that you have dedicated your post this month to Barbara. I was saddened to hear that she is no longer with us and it took a while for the news in the tweet I read from Bryan for it all to sink it. Barbara was such a joy to ‘chat’ with via twitter and our blog posts and she seemed like such a gentle and kind soul. I will hold in my mind the image of the beautiful young woman with her beloved husband in the 1970s photograph on her blog.
Thank you for sharing the goodies in your kitchen this month. Happy cooking xox
Very sad news, Lizzy. That 70s photo of her was very lovely indeed.
xxx
Yes… makes one reflect on your own mortality and the important things in life.
The rosemary bowl truly is a work of art. I’m inspired to prune the rosemary. Will the clay holder keep the garlic longer and stop it sprouting?
Jo, I think that’s what the clay holder is supposed to do, but I’ve only just picked it up and our garlic is already sprouting. I think most of it will go into the garden soon.. :)
Your rosemary egg basket is superb. It looks like a bird may have made it.
Thanks Louise! My friend Nic will be very happy to read that! :)
The egg basket is so gorgeous.. I want one, but my rosemary never gets that big.. your friend is very clever. I did not know barbara however it is lovely of you to dedicate your post to her.. c
Celi, Nic has been weaving baskets from all sorts of clever things – shriveled monsteria leaves, lemongrass, star jasmine – all very earthy and organic. I’m sure you could find something on the farmy to work with if you were so inclined.. :)
My rosemary desperately need pruning. Celi I can tie some to a sting on the next passing cloud .
Celia I’m really sorry to hear of Barbara passing away. I’m sure her family would be incredibly touched to hear that you dedicated this post to her.
Your little nest is lovely. I should try and make something like that for The Monkeys. They would love to put some ‘treasures’ in there. Actually I should have put some of their ‘treasures’ in my IMK post today. My kitchen is usually littered with them. This am was a nursing dictionary that Little Monkey is currently carrying around with him day and night. Funny little thing!
Brydie, aren’t they funny little things at this age? Small Man used to carry around an onion. Don’t ask me why, I never figured it out.. :)
Hi Celia – I was really sad to hear of Barbara’s passing – she contributed so much to the blogging community and put up such a fight against cancer. I love the basket and also the turkish bowls and designs – such gorgeous patterns
I have put up an in my kitchen post today at http://gggiraffe.blogspot.com.au/2012/07/in-my-kitchen-july-2012.html
Thanks Johanna! Lovely things in your kitchen this month! :)
How lovely to dedicate your post to such a lovely Celia. I hope her family realises how many people she touched through her blog.
Those baskets are stunning! I might make one with fresh sprigs then pack in a goat cheese and bake it in the oven. Can’t you just imagine the flavours and visual impact!
I happen to know how cute those little bowls are, expect to see it in many blog photos to come :)
Becca, that is a brilliant idea! I’m going to pass it onto Nic, and she’ll have to come over and get more rosemary. So glad you liked the bowl, love! x
Hi Celia, I’m torn between commenting on your lovely post and feelings of sadness for Barbara and her family. The lovely little basket seems such an apt metaphore for life: intricately woven and joined and supported by other similar pieces woven into it to create something to be enjoyed by many more people. The blogging community I’ve expored via your blog all seem to be such warm, supportive, generous, creative ‘real’ people; all interweaving with laughter and caring – Barbara seems to have been such a person and I feel so sad for her family.
Jan, it really was sad news…
You’re so right about the blogging community, especially the one we slightly “older” bloggers share. I’ve made some lovely friends through it!
Hugs, Maz
Thanks Maz. I only knew Barbara through her blog, but she was highly regarded in the Aussie food blogging scene…
Kind of you to dedicate this post to Barbara. You’re right, she was incredibly friendly and kind to everyone she came across. I knew she was ill but not that things were this bad. Tragic for her family and close friends.
Your IMK makes me smile. Love the egg basket and the stuff from that shop just makes me feel happy to look at it.
Maureen, Moya from the shop left you a comment on the original post about mailorder. Hopefully you can find something that you like! :)
The egg basket is beautiful and must be a little fragrant too. I really admire weavers. The fabled tablecloth is too beautiful for words. Next time I go to Turkuaz Motif I will force myself to turn away from the ceramics and check out the textiles.
I don’t know why all loss seems to happen in winter. This year we have lost my grandmother (at 99.94) and another dear friend too. They were bright lights in our lives; it seems to accentuate the loss in winter when the light is subdued.
Vix, thank you for admiring the tablecloth, I am very, very chuffed with it. It’s quite thick, which lets it sit on our large table very well, and it matches the paint in the room exactly.
I’m sorry to hear about your recent losses.. x
that woven basket is amazing – it looks as if nature did it. I love your bowls as well. Lovely dedication Celia, and I will be doing my IMK post a bit late this month :)
Tandy, look forward to peering into your fridge again soon, and your kitchen! My friend Nic is going to be thrilled when she reads all these comments! :)
Celia, it’s a lovely celebration of Barbara’s life to dedicate this post to her.
I felt sure there would be fish in some shape or form in your kitchen soon.
Hehehe…Elaine, am I that predictable? :) I’m just surprised fish haven’t made it into my kitchenware before now! :)
No never let anyone tell you you’re predictable Celia! I had the impression by the way you lovingly and wistfully described the large fish plate ……….perhaps some smaller versions of it might appear in your kitchen.
That is very sad about Barbara. I didn’t know her very well but she was friendly when I met her in person.
Lorraine, I only knew her through the blog, but she was lovely. I’m glad you got to meet her in person.
Hi Celia, very sad to hear about the loss of your friend Barbara, I didn’t know of her but have had a look at her blog, she had some lovely posts.
I love your dishes, I wish there were a store like that here in Brisbane. I have just uploaded my “In my Kitchen” post for this month so would be great if you could add it to your list of other great bloggers posts. I must say the month comes around very quickly, I really wish this year would slow down a little.
Kind Regards Shirley
http://themakingofparadise.blogspot.com.au/
Shirley, you’re not wrong about how quickly the year has flown – as Lizzy pointed out recently, we’re into the half now that goes even faster! Lovely IMK post on your blog, thank you for sharing! :)
Hi Celia,
I’m very sorry to hear about your friend’s passing. I didn’t know her, but from reading all of the comments she must have been a lovely woman.
On a different note, I wanted to mention that I really enjoy reading your blog. All of your homemade recipes are truly inspiring. I’m new to the blogging community (I just launched my own site), and I wanted to let you know that I joined your ‘In My Kitchen’ this month. I linked back to this site as well.
Can’t wait to read about what you make next…
Best,
Emilie
Emilie, how fabulous to have you joining in, and it was a joy to open your post and see that photo of the Harbour Bridge! Thanks for playing, and for your kind words.. :)
I followed her blog too but have benn backed up because of my illness…I feel so bad…..
Don’t feel bad, darling. We all get so busy. I hope you’re feeling better soon.. xx
You have such talented neighbour, gorgeous basket. Your fish bowls are lovely am sure they will be used a lot.
So sorry to learn about your friend Barbara.
Thanks Norma – the fish bowls have both been used already! :)
Whoa, time flies! I can’t believe its July! I always look forward to see what’s in your kitchen, the ceramic plates are beautiful, love the table cloth! :-)
Sponge, thank you! The tablecloth has changed our entire dining room – it now looks a little elegant (having the new covering forced us to tidy up a bit).. :)
Some people are so talented…love the egg basket your friend made.
Thanks Karen, I adore it. It’s actually on display on our hall table now – but I’m sure it’s going to get a lot of use.
I was so sad to hear of Barbara’s passing on Saturday. I didn’t know her well just through her lovely tweets.
The rosemary basket is just beautiful. You have a very clever neighbour!
Claire, thank you. I think she’s very clever too! :)
Celia – love the clay garlic pot. Need one of those! Am just keeping that lovely Aussie garlic from your friend in a crappy tupperware container open on the bench :) Have written an In My Kitchen post this month too: http://www.figandcherry.com/featured/in-my-kitchen-july-2012/
Christie, they were on sale at Peters for just $8! Thanks for playing – lovely to see inside your kitchen! :)
Sorry to hear about your friend…that’s very sad.
I’m wondering if/how I could get involved with these IMK posts – think I need to add a little something something to my blog.
Just join in, Miss Piggy! Everyone is welcome! Take some photos of things in your kitchen, pop them into a post and put a link into your post directing people back to http://www.figjamandlimecordial.com please (so your readers can peek into other bloggers’ kitchens as well). Then just leave me a comment here and I’ll add your post to our monthly listing. Look forward to seeing what’s in your kitchen!
Thank you Celia. I’m house-sitting at the moment so when I’m back in my own kitchen I’ll be in touch…yay!
Hi Celia, so sorry to hear about your friend. The photos look fantastic, the fish symbolises good luck so I hope much of it comes your way! We should have apple tea together on your next visit. Will let you know when we get some new stock which is in the next few months. All the best, Metin.
Hi Metin, thanks for having such great stuff. I love the fish designs! Please do email me when you get new stock, as I’d love an excuse to pop in again.. :)

I love your egg basket. What a wonderful idea. I wonder if your apples are actually Sturmer Pippins, which originated in the village of Sturmer not far from here. You might be interested to read about them here http://www.sturmernurseries.co.uk/faqs/question4.html
I’ve just linked my kitchen post.
Anne, thanks for playing! I think they could well be Sturmer Pippins, I just took the spelling off the handwritten label on the basket the apples were in. How cool that we could be eating apples from your part of the world! :)
I love your kitchen, Celia!
I think I would love your dining room, as well. That table cloth is gorgeous!
The apples look so good- we are eating last year’s crop and yours look so fresh and crisp. And the basket is truly a marvelous gift. I love gifts that truly come from the hands and heart of the giver! I’m going to try that with the rosemary cuttings from the plant in Virginia!
I put up a post this month- although a lot of IMK for July is really from June. I guess that is always kind of true for me- I take pictures all month and accumulate enough to share.
Heidi, I love seeing what’s in your kitchen every month. It’s always full of food and love and FAMILY! xx

Thanks Sue! :)
I hadn’t met Barbara.. but enjoyed reading through some of her beautiful blog posts.. I’m so sad for your loss..
I love your dishes (as you know) and have looked everywhere for a store that might sell some here but to no avail.. I shall have dish envy for a very very long time! xo Smidge
Smidge, I didn’t know her well, but I’m also sad for the loss her family must be feeling right now..
I have been googling “Turkish ceramics Calgary” to no avail! I’ll let you know if I find anything.. :)
Hi Celia, it was sad to hear about Barbara’s passing. We had enjoyed a brief but happy correspondence on our blogs and Twitter. You’ve done another lovely post once again. I love the basket made from rosemary prunings. What a talented friend you have!
Christine, it was indeed very sad to hear about Barbara – like you, I only knew her through the blog. I hope her family are ok..
My friend Nic is very clever indeed! :)

Thanks Misky! :)
I love this little basket!
Thank you! My friend Nic will be pleased. :)
Dear Celia,
I have read few of Barbara’s posts and understand she was a cancer survivor and a lovely lady from Lizzy. I have not really communicated with her as such but it’s sad new to hear of her passing.
Chopinand, it really was very sad news…
So sorry to hear about your friend Barbara, so very sad.
What I wouldn’t do to get my hands on a couple of those gorgeous bowls and would you look at that egg basket – brilliant and your table cloth is beyond exquisite.
:-) Mandy
Thanks Mandy! I love the egg basket! Nic has been weaving like crazy! :) I adore our new tablecloth, it makes the room look so nice!

Hi Celia, Love your little garlic pot … but most impressed with the rosemary basket. How clever is your neighbour! Does it still have the rosemary fragrance ?
P.S. I’ve posted an IMK this month :-)
Karen, lovely to see what’s in your kitchen this month! The rosemary basket has lost its perfume now, but it’s still rigid and firm, perfect for collecting the eggs in!
Hello Celia – I’ve just posted my very first IMK (not very inspiring as I’m not even in my own kitchen this month, but somebody elses whilst I house-sit). Here is the link… http://theadventuresofmisspiggy.blogspot.com.au/2012/07/in-my-kitchen-july.html
Hi Celia, I’ve just posted IMK for July.

Miss Piggy and Rose, thanks for joining in! :)
Hi Celia,
I love your rosemary basket – and I too have plenty of apples in my kitchen thanks to a visit to Stanthorpe for some fresh crunchy ones!
Here’s a peek into my kitchen this month (better late than never!!)…

Shelley, thanks for playing! Your cakemaking skills never fail to amaze me!
