Smithsonian Zoo’s Lion in the Snow

August 21, 2010 by Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

……

Courage does not always roar.

Sometimes courage is the quiet voice

at the end of the day saying,

“I will try again tomorrow”

……

Mary Anne Radmacher

……

……

I’ve used these photos before, but was delighted to find high resolution copies on Wikipedia recently.  They’re public domain material and I believe these Mehgan Murphy photos of Luke the lion first appeared in advertising material for the Smithsonian Zoo in 2008.  Clicking on the photos will bring up larger images.

I thought sharing them with you might be a nice way to start the weekend…

Nothing could have been better for me. The photos, the words, all arriving at the right time

    big thank you!

You said it, or well as you point out Mary Anne said it!

Sorry … but comment about side bar happenings. ‘Botham burgers’ are these using the Jamie Oliver recipe?? They are splendid!

It is very hot here in North Carolina so I was thrilled to see this picture of the lion enjoying the snow. I love the snow. What a beautiful creature this lion. Thanks.

    Glad you’re all enjoying it!

Gill, yes, Botham burgers made exactly to Jamie Oliver’s recipe and baked in the oven. They’re just perfect! Did you notice the reference to Magners Irish apple cider? I thought of you as we were drinking it! :)

How lovely, I wonder what the lion was thinking? My german shepherd went crazy the first time it was cold enough for him to see his breath. The more he barked, the more fogginess came out! It was very funny to watch him chase his breath around~

Chef, this was the passage that accompanied the original release of the photos:

Luke, the male African lion at Smithsonian’s National Zoo took a break from his afternoon bone to watch the snowflakes fall in Washington, D.C. Although it does not snow in his native Africa, Luke seemed content to lie outside of his heated den and finish his lunch, occasionally shaking the snow from his mane. Luke and the Zoo’s three female African lions can been seen at the Zoo’s Great Cats exhibit. http://newsdesk.si.edu/photos/photo-2-9

Aaaahhh, I’m likin’ the encouraging verse….. and the lions pretty cool too (I get like that when its snowing…. fascinating, mesmerising & all that :)

Anna, so glad you like it! I find the expression on the lion’s face just so serene, and like the Intolerant Chef commented, I too wonder what’s going through his mind as he watches the snow fall…

    thank you.
Sometimes courage is in short supply.
Because I’m looking for the loud and obvious packaging-
    the “roar”-
    instead of the persistent
    and consistent
    and the steadfast quiet voice-
    that says,
    “I will try again.”
    tomorrow.

    Loved your post and pictures.

He’s so beautiful! I wonder what he is thinking? “It’s not like this back at home!” :P
