Chicken-Cam

July 10, 2011 by Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

My lovely friend Joanna is roaming Bristol taking photos of gorillas for me, so I thought I’d reciprocate with a few chicken videos.

Because the videos are quite large, I’ve uploaded the first one here, and put the other two on their own pages. Please click on the links to have a look!

Here is Queenie, the circus chicken, balancing on the rail of the dome to nibble at a bit of homemade sausage…

. . . . .

Three chickens on a swing, preening (Rosemary in the middle, Francesca on the right, and Pete thinks it’s Maggie on the left) …

. . . . .

…and a just dead pond fish, thrown into the dome, caused a vigorous chase…and gave me the giggles!

Thanks for stopping by! I hope you have as much fun with your chooks as we have with ours!

    I feel a song coming on….

Would you like to swing on a bar?
carry pond fish home in a jar?
And be better off than you are?
Or would you rather be a chook?

I would! Love those girls xxx

I went out yesterday and told the girls that I was taking videos for Joanna and Debra, and they performed a treat for us! :) The fish chasing went on for several minutes, with first one bird, then another, running around with a fish tail sticking out of her beak!

What clever little chooks they are playing on their swing. They lead a very nice chooky life. How long do chooks live?

    • on July 10, 2011 at 10:03 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Deb, I have no idea how long they live for, but I don’t think ISA Browns have as long a lifespan as some of the heritage breeds. But I hope it’s a very long time nonetheless!

The girls love their swing – they flap up and down from the ground to the swing and up to their roost all day long! They really are circus chickens.. ;-)

I love your chook videos. So cute! They really are in quite a frenzy in that last one.

    • on July 10, 2011 at 12:19 pm Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Claire, they all wanted that fish! I was giggling at the noise Queenie was making as she ran around – she was trying to warn them all off, but she couldn’t open her mouth, so she kept making this pathetic little wailing noise.. :)

They really are quite entertaining. I would move a deck chair out and watch them for L O N G periods of time. :)
    Thanks for sharing, Celia!

    • on July 10, 2011 at 12:20 pm Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Heidi, I wish you were here today – we put their dustbath in, so they’ve all be queued up for a turn! We could head out with a cup of tea and sit in the winter sun and watch them. I’m so glad you liked the clips! :)

That was so funny – the fish was literally the equivalent of chooky ‘fast food’ – I had to giggle too at the noise she was making. We let ours roam in the garden when we are home and when I go out they always think I have a tidbit for them and come haring across the grass doing what I call the “Jurassic Jog”. As for how long they live – ours have stopped laying so my Peter has given them the facts of life talk:) Fortunately for our girls we still trek to the butcher for a chook. I’ve recently bought Jackie French’s “Chook Book” and some of her chickens have lived for as much as 15 years. It’s a really useful book and it’s become our Chook Bible.

    • on July 10, 2011 at 3:32 pm Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Jan, it was so funny, it was almost like a muffled, “bugger off! bugger off!”.. :)

Jackie French’s book swears by feeding the chooks with avocados every day to ensure a long life, but Steve the vet was appalled when I suggested that, as it’s apparently toxic to birds! So I haven’t been game to try it. But I’d love the girls to live 15 years, that would be so lovely…

      • on July 10, 2011 at 9:26 pm Jan

Yes, I read the Avocado bit too, but, too late she cried – our girls have had their beaks in Avocado and love it – however – they’re not laying…..

The pandas at the zoo are on a 24hr live video feed, maybe we could do that for the chickens? I know, you could set up one of those pay to play feeds, so that we could put $5 on our credit card per 10minutes watching or something! That way they could pay for themselves and a holiday and new car for you as they have so many fans already! Cool, I wonder if anyone would pay to see my cat sleep- she’s not as fun as the chickens :(

    • on July 10, 2011 at 3:34 pm Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Becca, you’re too funny. There are some chook cams online already, but whenever I look at any of them, nothing’s happening! :)

I’m just happy everyone enjoys the videos! :)

Your Chickens RULE! So Funny! I love the chicken race. :-)

      Thanks Maz! They’re very cute!

Great chook cam! Bacon rinds are another great source of amusing chook antics. I HAD a lovely pile of compost until I left my hens out–lets say I wish I had put the pile where I wanted to spread it.

    • on July 11, 2011 at 6:35 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

They’re very good rotavaters, aren’t they Liz? ;-)

  10. on July 10, 2011 at 6:41 pm Sally

It’s so relaxing to watch your hens. I thought you might like this hen video from someone who rescues battery hens – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bYvOw7MbYl8

Sally, thank you for the link, but it brought me to tears. Poor little chookies. So glad they’re having such a happy life now, but they’ve obviously been through so much…

  11. on July 10, 2011 at 9:48 pm sallybr

They are too cute! Amazing their balance, they could help me with some yoga poses in which I show A LOT less elegance… ;-)

I wonder if the dominant chick always goes to the swing first, or if it’s just random?

Love the videos, always looking forward to the next one…

    • on July 11, 2011 at 6:37 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Sally, the first chook up on the swing was Rosemary, and she’s the least dominant chicken, but also the maddest. They all seem to take turns on the swing. I love it when they get right up high on the roost and then peer down at us quizzically as we open the door. ;-)

Here are Bertie and Queenie at it…

  12. on July 11, 2011 at 5:31 pm Christine

Awww, this is SO sweet, Celia, thankyou for sharing. It heals my soul to watch your birds and their antics! It was nice to hear you laugh, too. :)

    • on July 11, 2011 at 7:09 pm Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

I’m so glad, Chris! I said to Pete when I posted this that I hoped it wouldn’t upset you, so I’m grateful for your comment. I am happy to share them with you as much as I can! I was mainly laughing because of the funny little noise Queenie kept making – she was so cross with the others.. :)

  13. on July 12, 2011 at 5:57 am Platanos, Mangoes and Me!

    I love your chicks

    • on July 12, 2011 at 11:39 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Norma, I’m pretty sure they’d love you right back.. :)

  14. on July 12, 2011 at 2:23 pm Jason Dingley

Oh, I was hoping to see some serious swinging, then maybe some somersaults with one chicken catching the other. My Chickens have a long bamboo perch that when all four are on it it bows down quite considerably. Then when a couple jump off together the other two get a high bounce.

    • on July 13, 2011 at 5:59 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Oh they do all those things too, Jason, I just don’t get to catch it on video… ;-)

  15. on July 21, 2011 at 12:06 am drfugawe

Glad to see that the girls are still doing so well – please tell them I said, ‘Hi’.

    • on July 21, 2011 at 7:03 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

I’ll give them your best! They’re a bit damp at the moment, we’ve had heavy rain storms here in Sydney!
