Paper Dragon

November 26, 2011 by Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

A paper dragon for Joanna…

This optical illusion is so cool that I had to take a video to show you!

When you view the dragon with one eye closed, its head appears to actually move as it follows you…

Pete says the illusion can be captured on video because the camera is recording the image as it would be seen by one eye (mono) rather than two (stereo).

Try it out for yourself – you can read about it on the Grand Illusions website and download the pdf file here.  One tip – make sure you tape the head together facing inwards rather than out, or the illusion won’t work.

Have a fun weekend!

Hehehe…I’m glad you’re all enjoying it. I wasn’t clear, sorry – when you look at it in real life, you have to close one eye to make the illusion work. Pete says that’s because it works in mono and not stereo vision, if that makes sense. Anyway, the camera records in mono vision, so what you see in the video is the same as what you would see with one eye closed! :)

Have any of you had a go at making it yourself? We’ve now made two.. :)

That is so cool! It’s the same trick that is used at the Haunted Mansion at Disneyland.

We now have three dragons sitting on top of the fish tank, and last night Small Man had to get up and turn them all to face the wall at dinner time. He couldn’t eat because they were all watching him, and it was messing with his brain! :)
