Happy New Year!
This year, we’re moving our In My Kitchen posts to the first of each month, to give everyone who wants to join in the entire month to do so.
In my kitchen…
…are imported treats – French chestnuts, Italian mayonnaise and Lyle’s Golden Syrup…
In my kitchen…
…are two new cookbooks that I bought myself for Christmas. I bought two copies of the Nick Malgieri book – one for Maude and one for myself. Abby tempted me with recipes from Bake! all last year, so I finally indulged…
In my kitchen…
…are two bottles of Pete’s vanilla syrup, made with the empty pods leftover from our vanilla sugar…
In my kitchen…
…are a few pickings from the garden. Our cucumber plants are starting to pick up steam…
In my kitchen…
…is a container of rosemary salt. It adds a magical zing to roast potatoes…
In my kitchen…
…is a bag of quince green tea and a jar of marinated baby (Persian) figs, a gift from our friends Andrea and Chris…
In my kitchen…
…is a jar of Kampot pepper, which Pete’s sister Katey brought back for me from Cambodia. It smells amazing!
. . . . .
Tell me, what’s happening in your kitchen this month?
If you’d like to do an In My Kitchen post on your own blog, please feel free to use this format, and to leave a comment here linking back to your post. We’d love to see what’s happening in your kitchen this month!

Happy New Year !!! :D 2012 is finally here and I wish your whole family a healthy and brilliant year ahead. Let your smiles shine brighter than this morning’s fireworks :D
Thanks Sam! Happy New Year to you and yours too!
Happy new year to you too. i have those chestnuts too! they are the best packaged ones as the other sorts tend to stick together in their vac packs! We were just wondering here (being old) when Tate and Lyle changed their branding to Lyles, the sort of thing that happens imperceptibly, like The demise of Callard & Bowser amd their exquisite butterscotch. i have just made a ribsticking lunch of Dan Lepard’s cider and pumpkin farls and drunk (yes,me!) half a bottle of Belgian cidre, which I had to buy for culinary purposes. So, hic, here’s to you !!!
Happy New Year to you and Brian, Jo! All the very best for 2012!
I bought the chestnuts for the turkey – the bird was boring, but the chestnuts were a great find! I’m definitely going to keep them in stock (although they are exy over here). And I usually buy local golden syrup, but I’d been reading about the Lyle brand with the rotting dead lion, so when I came across a tin, I couldn’t resist picking it up! :)
‘Out of the strong came forth sweetness’ The story is recapitulated here http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/london/7180268.stm
We’ve just been watching the spectacular New Year fireworks from Sydney.
Happy New Year to you all!
Suelle, they woke us at midnight, they were so loud! And we’re about 10km from the city! :)
Have a wonderful 2012!!
Yay, I’m so glad you got a copy of Bake! I hope you enjoy it!!! :) Very happy New Year to you and yours, Celia!!
Abbs, I love it, thank you! I’ve been reading it this morning over breakfast, trying to decide if I make the turkish bread or the nut bars first! All the best to you and your lovely family for 2012! x
Talk about some great ingredients. Happy New Year.
Cheers, Greg! Happy New Year to you too! :)
Happy New Year Celia! I hope it’s a great one for you and all your family. Lots of interesting things here to start you off! It’s funny to see Golden Syrup on your blog! What’s the closest ‘native’ thing you have to it? I’ll be interested to see how you get on with HFW’s Meat book. I bought it years ago and when tidying up recently found it under a pile of (clean) washing. Shows how much I’ve used it then!!!
C, golden syrup is nearly as Australian as it is British, but I couldn’t resist the beautiful Lyle tin when I saw it. Our local version comes in a plastic tub!
Hugh’s book has been an interesting read, but it’s a lot more information than recipes! Have a great 2012!
Happy New year from across the ocean!!
I wish you tons of joy, excitement & a lot of great food adventures too! ;)
Kisses!
Sophie darling, Happy New Year to you too! xx
What a great way to start 2012, Celia!
hope you had a fantastic New Year’s Eve, we will be one of the last folks to celebrate the beginning of the year, interesting, and a new experience for us….
:-)
Sally, thank you! All the best to you and Phil for a wonderful 2012! Starting it in Hawaii is a glorious way to begin!
Happy New Year to you all!!! Please keep up the divine posts for 2012 esp. in the chocolate dept :-)
Will do, Gill! Happy 2012 to you too, it will certainly be exciting! All the best with the new bub!
Happy New Year to you Celia and Pete and the boys. As usual you have lots of interesting things to see in your kitchen and I’m intrigued by the kampot pepper. Seeing golden syrup as a treat made me giggle as we take it so much for granted here – I didn’t realise you didn’t have it in Australia.
Choc, Happy New Year! We have golden syrup here, just not in a tin with a rotting lion’s corpse and swarming bees on the front. How could I pass that up? :) The kampot pepper is pungent and aromatic!
Happy new year, Celia, and best wishes to you and your family for 2012. I’ll be back next week with what’s in my kitchen. :)
Misk, looking forward to seeing what’s in your kitchen! All the best for 2012!
Happy new year Celia and thanks so much for your inspiring posts. You have some truly superb things in your kitchen this month! Would love to know if your wonderful ingredients are available here, or did you shop online? I’ll be back soon with my news. In the meantime, happy new year to your bevy of readers, all such lovely cooks as well!
Lizzy, all the best for 2012, and thanks for showing us what’s in your kitchen this month! I bought the chestnuts, mayo and golden syrup at Trim’s fruitshop in Leichhardt Market Town – it has a huge selection of interesting produce!
Your kitchen is so much more interesting than mine! I did make a very good fruit cake – from David Herbert’s Complete Perfect Recipes. It was so good I am making another one today.
Happy New Year lovely Celia!
Have a wonderful year too, Deb! I’m looking forward to another year of vicarious travel through your gorgeous blog!
A very Happy New Year to you and your boys too Celia! I hope this year brings peace and prosperity, love and laughter, health and happiness!
What a lot of lovely goodies you have, I’m looking forward to seeing what you do with them, yumm…
Becca, best wishes to you, BigJ, MiddleC and LittleJ for a fantastic 2012! Hope your shooting arm is back in form soon!
Harpy noo yerh to everyone! Thanks for your inspiring posts that I’ve only recently been directed to – you are now one of my “go to” places for recipes and I love the extra advice you include. A question to start off 2012 for you – I WILL make those crackers today!! I found some type “00” flour in my freezer (I need to keep all my flour in the freezer due to weevil problems, as I buy in bulk) and was wondering if I can use that? I use it for pasta, as I believe it gives a grainy finish for sauce to adhere to. Any thoughts??
Bye
A
Thanks Amanda, Happy New Year to you too! I suspect whether or not your 00 flour will work will depend on its protein content – if it’s about 11% then it’s about the same as plain flour, but if it’s much higher than that, then it’s probably better used for breadmaking. I’ve never tried making crackers with 00 flour, so I’m not sure how they would work, but could be worth a try?
So, with blind faith I dived in – using the 00 flour as well, what the heck, it was that or plain flour. Very happy with result, although not as pretty as yours looked! The balance of spices is spot on. I will be making this again for sure!
Many thanks,
Bye
A
Very best wishes for the coming year of high calorie, high yummy, chook-infused blogging (and living!)
Thank you, dear Cosmo! All the best to you and yours too!
Celia, wishing you and your family all the best for 2012. May it be filled with much love, laughter and good food – as always!
My New Year Resolution this year is to spend as much time as possible doing the things I enjoy like cooking, eating and blogging of course of which you are a big part.
Love your In My Kitchen this month – all of it sounds delicious and a little decadent – my favourite things to be. Am going to have a go at the vanilla syrup hopefully soon as all the store bought ones are riddled with preservative which Darling ( husband ) is allergic to – so homemade is the way to go and will keep his sweet tooth happy I’m sure!
Thank you Sue! May it be a glorious 2012 for you and your family too! Pete’s vanilla syrup is truly delicious – we go through phases of having it on everything.. :)
In my kitchen… well I’m not in my kitchen at the moment, but will look at doing this when I get back home:) Happy New Year!!
Smidge. can’t wait to see what’s in your kitchen! Happy New Year! :)
Happy New Year Celia!
Rosemary salt would be amazing on roast potatoes I’ve never seen it. Might be a good one to make for pressies too.
I can’t wait to see what you cook up from your new recipe books.
Hi Claire, what an exciting year 2012 is going to be for you and Will! All the very best to both of you!
Happy New Year Celia!
Those purple beans look different. My dwarf bush bean plants are just loaded at the moment. Got a lot of picking to do later! I realise it’s a bit belated but rosemary salt would be a great little extra for christmas hampers…must remember that for next year.
Kat, the purple beans are really interesting – they change colour to green when they’re cooked! Our bean plants are laden at the moment! All the best for 2012!
Happy New Year, my friend, may it be a love and light-filled year for you. xxx
Cindy darling, may it be that for all of us! Thank you! Happy New Year!
Ok happy New Year and all that stuff and now i have to hurry up and check out the kitchen for new stuff.. I LOVE the idea of rosemary salt, I am going to try and make my own! I miss you celia, looks like 012 is already rocking.. c
The rosemary salt is fabulous, I think we could all try and make some. It was sooo nice on spuds! Have a wonderful 2012, Celi! x
Hmmm I have a can of chestnut purree… I used to make a dessert with it adding chocolate, unsalted butter and a little sugar – rich but soooo yummy.
There are still two packs of Leda gluten and dairy free Rum Balls for me to take when invited out… so I have something to nibble… (yes I am gluten and dairy intolerant which is why the chestnut is still on the shelf… need to find an unsalted nuttelex…lol)
Latest addition to the bookshelf is Jamie’s Great Britain… loving reading that… still loving Donna Hay 10th Birthday ed mag and … of course her Christmas one… only magazine to make my mouth water lol…
Happy New Year
Denise, thanks for stopping by! Good to know about Jamie’s Great Britain, I’ve been eyeing that one off on amazon! Have a fabulous 2012!
Yum to all of that kitchen goodness. Now that is just the kind of way to kick start a year. happy new year Celia!
Brydie, it’s going to be an exciting year for you! All the best to you and your gorgeous family! xxx
So many delicious looking things, from the rosemary salt to the quince tea and fresh peppercorns. So many delights! You have given me lots of ideas and new things to look out for :)
Clare, I haven’t tried the quince tea yet, but it looks intriguing! Have a great 2012!
what a great collection – and I cannot wait to read all the BAKE recipes :) I am going to make some rosemary salt as I have the HUGEST bush in my garden :)
Tandy, the book is a great read, I’ve just spent an hour with it this morning! It was wonderful to see what was in your kitchen this month, thanks for always playing! :)
Ah, Tandy, that is a great idea! Do let me know how it turns out please. Celia, where did you manage to find that salt?
Lizzy, it came from our friend Moo in South Australia, he bought it from Standom Butchers, Shop 4, 121 The Parade, Norwood, South Australia 5067
phone 08) 8331 9600. They also have the black salt that I blogged about a while ago.
Happy New Year, Celia. You sure have some amazing things in your kitchen! What a treasure trove.
Happy New Year to you and your lovely family too, Manuela! :)
Wow, Tate & Lyles Golden Syrup……brings back my childhood. I now live in Sydney and golden syrup is pretty much the same but its strange how something so simple sweeps you right back to being a little girl. You have to make flap jack ha ha……actually some to think of it i think they have a website with recipes on for their product http://www.lylesgoldensyrup.com/. This and a Be-Ro Flour book were the base of my dessert cooking in the UK x
Love the blog and Happy New Year to you and your family x
Karen, flapjacks! I’ve been saying for the last six months that I have to make those, but are they just like a muesli bar? Because if so, no-one here will eat them.. ;-) Thanks for the link to the recipes, and Happy New Year!
A thick, soft, gooey and sweet muesli bar maybe! Its main ingredients are oats, I don’t add anything healthy like fruit and just keep it stupidly sweet. Not found anyone yet who doesn’t like it ha ha. Just try a small batch first and watch the temp of the oven … It determines whether it’s crispy and brittle or soft and gooey x enjoy and let me know if you make some x
WOW! They all seem great, dear Celia, would be used in your beautiful recipes, I guess… Thank you, Happy New Year, with my love, nia
Happy New Year to you too, Nia! Hope it’s glorious for you!
I feel well-fed just looking at and thinking about all of those beautiful ingredients! Not that that would stop me from eating all of them if I were only a bit more proximal . . . . Lovely way to start the year!
Thanks Kathryn! We’ve really been enjoying the veg from the garden – half a dozen cucumbers today and a whole basket of beans..and the zucchini are about to start! :)
Dear Celia
Happy new year and wishing you a great 2012! Those cucumbers and French beans cannot possible look any fresher!!
I’ve never cooked with kampot pepper though, are they like white peppercorns?
Chopinand, I think so, I still haven’t used them. They do look like the Sarawak white pepper that we normally use, so will be interesting to compare! Have a great 2012! :)
As usual, your kitchen is a trove of treasures! I love all the figs and vanilla sauce and salts and chestnuts- but the fresh veg from your garden- it makes my heart go pitter pat!
I’ll try to make up one of these soon- my kitchen is kind of bare- Christmas and travel had taken a toll on my pantry!
Heidi, I always look forward to seeing what’s in your kitchen! The baby figs are very moreish indeed, and the garden is making me very happy at the moment!
I love those tins of Lyle’s golden syrup! I always buy a tin if I see it :)
Who could resist a tin with a dead rotting lion on the front? ;-)
Happy New Year Celia – have an awesome year filled with love and laughter!
Your “In My Kitchen” posts are always the best! I will be posting mine tomorrow.
No guessing that I just love the little bowl that you have your peppercorns in.
:-) Mandy
I’m a little late to the party because my poor computer was on the fritz… but our Christmas was lots of fun. I got a pail of my mother-in-law’s perfect peanut brittle, so light and crunchy. The hub got a new sauce pan and skillet. We all gave and got spices.
Here’s to a delicious new year!
Maz.
