Morris Dancers

May 11, 2012 by Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

They really are ninjas. Or maybe Morris dancers, as my friend Cosmo suggested. And oh, how they love sorrel!

We took this clip with the iPhone…

And here they are in action – look out for the synchronised leaping…

PS. If you listen carefully, you can hear the sounds of suburban Sydney, including the currawong call near the end of the second clip!

Hilarious!! I love this video.. for the exact reason you’ve mentioned, the background sounds made me feel like I was right there.. transported this morning!!

    • on May 12, 2012 at 8:11 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

I’m so glad you enjoyed it! They’re a hoot to watch! :)

  2. on May 11, 2012 at 12:39 am niasunset

This is so lovely, so lovely… you are amazing dear Celia, Thank you, with my love, nia

    • on May 12, 2012 at 8:12 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Nia, the longer we have them, the more I can distinguish their individual personalities. It makes me feel so sorry for all the battery hen chickens in the world..

  3. on May 11, 2012 at 12:57 am Kavey

    Haaa sweet jumping chickens!

    • on May 12, 2012 at 8:13 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Kavey, I wish I could take a clip of them when they dive-bomb, but I’m never fast enough. They peer down from their perch, and when we put a bowl of food in their coop, they come swooping down like a hawk.. ;-)

    High jump chickens in training.
    :-) Mandy

    • on May 12, 2012 at 8:14 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Any higher and they tend to fly! :)

  5. on May 11, 2012 at 1:21 am Anna

Love it – but the currawong made me really homesick! I just read that chickens have 24 taste buds and humans have between 2,000 – 5,000. They must be texture driven?

    • on May 12, 2012 at 8:15 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Anna, I wonder if they have a good sense of smell? Because whenever we approach the coop with protein – fish, meat, anything like that – they go bananas before we even get there…

  6. on May 11, 2012 at 2:00 am Sally

The synchronised leaping is great :) Can’t believe I’m watching another video of hens :)

    • on May 12, 2012 at 8:16 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Sally, you and I seem to be forever watching chook videos. Are you allowed to have chickens where you live? You’d absolutely love them… ;-)

  7. on May 11, 2012 at 2:49 am Choclette

Wish I could leap like that Celia.

    • on May 12, 2012 at 8:16 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Maybe if we wave chocolate just out of your reach? ;-)

  8. on May 11, 2012 at 6:30 am Lizzy (Good Things)

I just love chickens, Celia, such fun! I wish we had a ‘backyard’ so we could have some too. Thanks for making my morning xox

    • on May 12, 2012 at 8:17 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Lizzy, I’m so glad you enjoyed them. I love being able to share them with you all – they’re just so funny sometimes…

  9. on May 11, 2012 at 6:34 am jcosmonewbery

And I’ll never look at barn dancing the same again, either!

    • on May 12, 2012 at 8:17 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Actually, it’s probably closer to ballet.. ;-)

  10. on May 11, 2012 at 6:50 am Debra Kolkka

Is synchronised leaping an Olympic sport yet? Your girls would be gold medal winners.

    • on May 12, 2012 at 8:17 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Aren’t they funny, Deb? Every time I take a video of the chooks, I say to Pete, “Deb and Sally are going to love this..” :)

  11. on May 11, 2012 at 7:20 am heidiannie

What a fun way to spend some time in the morning- feeding and filming chooks!
(I just watched “Muriel’s Wedding” again, and this time understood the significance of the young groom’s name- Chook! Hah- it helps to hang around your blog. :) )

    • on May 12, 2012 at 8:18 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Heidi, it’s a term of endearment here! :)

  12. on May 11, 2012 at 7:54 am teawithhazel

    love your feathery girls..

    • on May 12, 2012 at 8:19 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Thanks Jane! We love them too!

  13. on May 11, 2012 at 8:51 am rose2007

What fun! Such clever healthy girls.

    • on May 12, 2012 at 8:20 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Rose, our little Maggie has stopped laying, and she seems to have gone a bit demented too. It’s funny, as she was the last to start laying, and now she’s stopped. But she’s still very happy, and as you say, everyone seems very healthy!

Ha, I love these guys. Ahem, girls!

    • on May 12, 2012 at 8:20 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

      Mad chickens rule! :)

  15. on May 11, 2012 at 9:18 am lambsearsandhoney

Chickens are such a hoot – I could watch them for hours. I hope ours survive the ministrations of my son while we are away.

    • on May 12, 2012 at 8:20 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

I’m sure he’ll look after them, Amanda! They’re actually quite low maintenance! :)

  16. on May 11, 2012 at 10:09 am Peter Bryenton (@peterbryenton)

Do you have any suburban foxes?

    • on May 12, 2012 at 8:21 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Peter, the occasional fox has been seen in the area, but the girls are in a coop, and have a high perch to fly to if they need it for protection…

  17. on May 11, 2012 at 11:46 am hotlyspiced

I have seen hens peck in the ground for food but I have never seen them leap up for a bunch of sorrel. Your hens are very lucky to be in such a loving home. What a laugh! xx

    • on May 12, 2012 at 8:22 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Charlie, they’re quite lovely, and a little bit bonkers. Every morning when I open the back door, they greet me with a loud chorus of clucking.. ;-)

  18. on May 11, 2012 at 12:47 pm theintolerantchef

What acrobatic biddies you have there Celia! Thanks for making my day :)

    • on May 12, 2012 at 8:22 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

I know how much you love chooks, Becca, so I’m really happy you enjoyed this! :)

  19. on May 11, 2012 at 6:03 pm maxabella

Very cute! Now I’m going to have to go and get some sorrell to see if our girls are as rhythmical… x

    • on May 12, 2012 at 8:23 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Our girls adore sorrell – I hope yours do too! :)

  20. on May 11, 2012 at 8:57 pm Jan

I love the synchronised leaping! That’s such fun as well as the little song that goes with it – very Spike Milligan and Goons-like. I particularly like the sound of the currawong. I remember that call from when we lived in Hornsby a lifetime ago. We occasionally hear them here in Brisbane, but only very occasionally. Thank you for the fun Celia.

    • on May 12, 2012 at 8:26 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Jan, I thought currawongs were common all over the country, I didn’t know they were a local bird. It’s amazing how evocative sound is, especially the bird calls!

  21. on May 12, 2012 at 5:01 am sallybr

Absolutely adorable! Awesome post, Celia, I loved it!

    • on May 12, 2012 at 8:27 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

So happy to hear that, Sally! :) xx

  22. on May 12, 2012 at 6:54 am Melanie

How fun to watch!! They are very good at that. Can you train them to do flips/somersaults for something even tastier maybe? They seem to be agile enough:)

    • on May 12, 2012 at 8:27 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

It’s hard to train them to do anything, but we can start to predict how they’re going to behave, which makes us look like we’re doing something clever.. ;-)

  23. on May 12, 2012 at 5:04 pm jenny

I luuuve watching any Morris Dancers…so cheerful and so are your chicks!

    • on May 13, 2012 at 6:45 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Jenny, thank you! They are very cheerful chooks.. ;-)

  24. on May 15, 2012 at 3:23 am Sophie33

    • on May 17, 2012 at 6:43 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Sophie, they adore the sorrel! They’re very sophisticated indeed! :)

  25. on June 25, 2012 at 3:26 pm Happychook (Andy)

very good I’ll see if I can train 1,000 of them to jump then put it You Tube and I bet it will go viral. might give you a call to come and help train them – bring your sorrel

    • on June 25, 2012 at 5:46 pm Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Andy, circus chooks! I can see it now! Your girls are very gorgeous, by the way.. :)
