They really are ninjas. Or maybe Morris dancers, as my friend Cosmo suggested. And oh, how they love sorrel!
We took this clip with the iPhone…
And here they are in action – look out for the synchronised leaping…
PS. If you listen carefully, you can hear the sounds of suburban Sydney, including the currawong call near the end of the second clip!
Hilarious!! I love this video.. for the exact reason you’ve mentioned, the background sounds made me feel like I was right there.. transported this morning!!
I’m so glad you enjoyed it! They’re a hoot to watch! :)
This is so lovely, so lovely… you are amazing dear Celia, Thank you, with my love, nia
Nia, the longer we have them, the more I can distinguish their individual personalities. It makes me feel so sorry for all the battery hen chickens in the world..
Haaa sweet jumping chickens!
Kavey, I wish I could take a clip of them when they dive-bomb, but I’m never fast enough. They peer down from their perch, and when we put a bowl of food in their coop, they come swooping down like a hawk.. ;-)
High jump chickens in training.
:-) Mandy
Any higher and they tend to fly! :)
Love it – but the currawong made me really homesick! I just read that chickens have 24 taste buds and humans have between 2,000 – 5,000. They must be texture driven?
Anna, I wonder if they have a good sense of smell? Because whenever we approach the coop with protein – fish, meat, anything like that – they go bananas before we even get there…
The synchronised leaping is great :) Can’t believe I’m watching another video of hens :)
Sally, you and I seem to be forever watching chook videos. Are you allowed to have chickens where you live? You’d absolutely love them… ;-)
Wish I could leap like that Celia.
Maybe if we wave chocolate just out of your reach? ;-)
I just love chickens, Celia, such fun! I wish we had a ‘backyard’ so we could have some too. Thanks for making my morning xox
Lizzy, I’m so glad you enjoyed them. I love being able to share them with you all – they’re just so funny sometimes…
And I’ll never look at barn dancing the same again, either!
Actually, it’s probably closer to ballet.. ;-)
Is synchronised leaping an Olympic sport yet? Your girls would be gold medal winners.
Aren’t they funny, Deb? Every time I take a video of the chooks, I say to Pete, “Deb and Sally are going to love this..” :)
What a fun way to spend some time in the morning- feeding and filming chooks!
(I just watched “Muriel’s Wedding” again, and this time understood the significance of the young groom’s name- Chook! Hah- it helps to hang around your blog. :) )
Heidi, it’s a term of endearment here! :)
love your feathery girls..
Thanks Jane! We love them too!
What fun! Such clever healthy girls.
Rose, our little Maggie has stopped laying, and she seems to have gone a bit demented too. It’s funny, as she was the last to start laying, and now she’s stopped. But she’s still very happy, and as you say, everyone seems very healthy!
Ha, I love these guys. Ahem, girls!
Mad chickens rule! :)
Chickens are such a hoot – I could watch them for hours. I hope ours survive the ministrations of my son while we are away.
I’m sure he’ll look after them, Amanda! They’re actually quite low maintenance! :)
Do you have any suburban foxes?
Peter, the occasional fox has been seen in the area, but the girls are in a coop, and have a high perch to fly to if they need it for protection…
I have seen hens peck in the ground for food but I have never seen them leap up for a bunch of sorrel. Your hens are very lucky to be in such a loving home. What a laugh! xx
Charlie, they’re quite lovely, and a little bit bonkers. Every morning when I open the back door, they greet me with a loud chorus of clucking.. ;-)
What acrobatic biddies you have there Celia! Thanks for making my day :)
I know how much you love chooks, Becca, so I’m really happy you enjoyed this! :)
Very cute! Now I’m going to have to go and get some sorrell to see if our girls are as rhythmical… x
Our girls adore sorrell – I hope yours do too! :)
I love the synchronised leaping! That’s such fun as well as the little song that goes with it – very Spike Milligan and Goons-like. I particularly like the sound of the currawong. I remember that call from when we lived in Hornsby a lifetime ago. We occasionally hear them here in Brisbane, but only very occasionally. Thank you for the fun Celia.
Jan, I thought currawongs were common all over the country, I didn’t know they were a local bird. It’s amazing how evocative sound is, especially the bird calls!
Absolutely adorable! Awesome post, Celia, I loved it!
So happy to hear that, Sally! :) xx
How fun to watch!! They are very good at that. Can you train them to do flips/somersaults for something even tastier maybe? They seem to be agile enough:)
It’s hard to train them to do anything, but we can start to predict how they’re going to behave, which makes us look like we’re doing something clever.. ;-)
I luuuve watching any Morris Dancers…so cheerful and so are your chicks!
Jenny, thank you! They are very cheerful chooks.. ;-)
2 lovely video clips from your jumping chickens! hahahahahahaha! :) They love sorrel indeed,..They have gourmet tastes!
Sophie, they adore the sorrel! They’re very sophisticated indeed! :)
very good I’ll see if I can train 1,000 of them to jump then put it You Tube and I bet it will go viral. might give you a call to come and help train them – bring your sorrel
Andy, circus chooks! I can see it now! Your girls are very gorgeous, by the way.. :)
