A Study in Succulents

July 20, 2012 by Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

My neighbour Nic grows beautiful succulents.

Photographing them today gave me a great opportunity to learn more about my iPhone 4S and the Hipstamatic Photo App.

Love succulents! They are so fascinating!

Thanks Anna! I love their pointy leaves!

Gorgeous shots Celia. We have loads of these growing in our garden too.
    :-) Mandy

    • on July 22, 2012 at 6:08 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Oooh Mandy, I’d be stalking your garden too. The neighbours have been walking past, seeing me lying spreadeagle on Nic’s lawn, taking photos.. :)

  3. on July 20, 2012 at 12:56 am Tesney Ap

Wow, I have never seen this before… and you make me wanna have an iPhone :)

    • on July 22, 2012 at 6:08 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Thanks Tes! I hope you get one! :)

  4. on July 20, 2012 at 2:14 am niasunset

WOW! They are amazing and so impressive… Great shots. Thank you dear Celia, love, nia

    • on July 22, 2012 at 6:09 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Thank you very much, Nia! It means a lot coming from you!

Fascinating the way the B&W combinations make a sort of instant “burned in” darkroom print isn’t it? Very nice work again, thanks Celia.

I do wish that the clever Hipstamatic app would also save the camera original along with the processed version.

    • on July 22, 2012 at 6:10 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Peter, thank you, you know how much I value your opinion! I’d love any tips you might have. If Hipstamatic saved the original, then we’d never play with all the different settings.. ;-)

  6. on July 20, 2012 at 5:32 am Lizzy (Good Things)

Pretty, aren’t they!? My father used to grow these.

    • on July 22, 2012 at 6:11 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

They’re really gorgeous, but until I got my new app, I never paid much attention to them. For that alone – refocusing my eyes on what’s around me – the app has paid for itself a hundred times over. :)

  7. on July 20, 2012 at 6:34 am EllaDee

Fantastic succulents & images. I’m hoping Samsung come up with a similar app for their next Galaxy. I’m missing out ;)

    • on July 22, 2012 at 6:12 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

ED, I hope so too! I don’t know much about phones – Pete just tells me what we’re getting. The iPhone does so many things – takes photos, plays games, keeps notes – the other day it rang and scared me – I’d forgotten it was a phone! ;-)

      • on July 22, 2012 at 7:07 pm EllaDee

Haha. Had conversation with my sister, who commented that even though I use my phone to listen to radio, Facebook, Gmail, text, navigate, google, wake up, remind myself to do something, take photos… I rarely answer a call as it’s on silent in the office & I forget to change it A.H. :)

    Beautiful…very cool…

      Thank you! :)

  9. on July 20, 2012 at 8:36 am theintolerantchef

So lovely, I recently saw a whole wall of succulents! They were somehow threaded through mesh and then hung on the wall-gorgeous!

    • on July 22, 2012 at 6:13 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Becca, that sounds amazing! I love living walls!

  10. on July 20, 2012 at 8:55 am Maureen

    lovely photographs!

      Thanks Maureen!

  11. on July 20, 2012 at 11:18 am Claire @ Claire K Creations

It’s hard to believe an iPhone can take such beautiful photos. Well done Celia!

    • on July 22, 2012 at 6:13 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Thanks Claire! I’m constantly amazed by what it can do!

  12. on July 20, 2012 at 12:18 pm hotlyspiced

These are very beautiful succulents. And your photography Celia is stunning. These are very lovely images. I bet your neighbour would like a copy of them! xx

    • on July 22, 2012 at 6:15 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Thanks Charlie! Pete says I’m not allowed to print anything out for the first month…hahaha

  13. on July 20, 2012 at 12:53 pm Heidi Fodor

These really pop- you are doing art with that iphone!

    • on July 22, 2012 at 6:16 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Heidi, thank you! I still can’t believe the iPhone can do all this. I’ve never taken photos like it – even with all the expensive camera kit of old!

  14. on July 20, 2012 at 1:29 pm ChgoJohn

The succulents are beautiful and the photography, Celi, has me stunned. I cannot believe you accomplished these photos with an iPhone. Well done!

    • on July 22, 2012 at 6:16 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

John, thank you! I’m having so much fun with the phone! :)

  15. on July 20, 2012 at 2:58 pm mltucker

I am a fan of iPhonography too. You have captured some lovely images here!

    • on July 22, 2012 at 6:20 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Thank you! I’m a recent convert, and I can’t believe it’s taken me so long! :)

  16. on July 20, 2012 at 4:07 pm marilynscottwaters

I’m sorry, you say sumthin? I was too busy playing with my Hipstamatic app to pay attention to anything today.

    Just saying… Maz

    • on July 22, 2012 at 6:20 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Hehehe…folks, check out the photos Maz has been taking here:

Ooh, I love the contrasts in the black and white shots, Celia..just lovely! Did you watch the photo show a couple of weeks ago when they went out with holga-ish cameras to the races? Really interesting effects on their pics. An app is much more reliable though than a plastic camera!

    • on July 22, 2012 at 6:21 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Chris, I didn’t see that! What was it called please, if you can remember?

  18. on July 20, 2012 at 10:17 pm Norma Chang

Great photos, love the angles you chose to snap the subjects, I especially like the black and white.

    • on July 22, 2012 at 6:21 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Thanks Norma! Succulents are particularly rewarding to photograph, with all their clean lines…

  19. on July 20, 2012 at 10:30 pm Johanna GGG

those black and white succelent photos are other worldly – lovely!

    • on July 22, 2012 at 6:21 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

      Thanks Johanna! :)

  20. on July 21, 2012 at 2:47 am Sous Chef

I am so impressed with the photos here and on your previous post!

    • on July 22, 2012 at 6:22 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Sue, thank you! I’ve been having fun! :)

  21. on July 21, 2012 at 4:55 am Choclette

Gorgeous photos, I always love how black and white shows up the detail. Will have to investigate hipstamatic.

    • on July 22, 2012 at 6:23 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Choclette, I’m a bit taken with black and white, and I also love the almost black and white in the third photo, I think it’s a nice effect. Hope you find a way to use this app, it’s a lot of fun, and portable! :)

  22. on July 21, 2012 at 5:34 am Dakota

    Beautiful!!!

My mother-in-law is Malay Chinese, therefore our house is surrounded, ENTIRELY by succulents (money trees) LOL! We’ve got about 160 money trees planted around the house. When people come over they get a bit of a surprise. I love them though. Succulents are so beautiful and timeless all your round. :)

p.s Thank you so much for always leaving such nice comments on my posts. :)

    • on July 22, 2012 at 6:28 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Dakota, you take some of the best photos I’ve ever seen. I’m so glad you’re back blogging again! I’d love to see what you’re able to do with your camera and all those succulents! :)

      • on July 22, 2012 at 9:11 am Dakota

Thank you soo much Celia. That’s so sweet of you. I love reading your comments on my posts. I’m glad I’ve come back to blogging. So much was going on in my life, but I really missed taking photos. I think you’ve inspired a post… I shall take photos of our succulents. And of our very Chinese house too. :) xx

  23. on July 21, 2012 at 12:55 pm Lorraine @ Not Quite Nigella

I don’t know which ones I like better, the black and whites or the colours. Maybe both! :P

    • on July 22, 2012 at 6:28 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Thanks Lorraine! I think I like the BW ones myself, but only just!

  24. on July 21, 2012 at 7:06 pm Misky

Lovely! Makes me wish I had an iPhone…

  26. on July 22, 2012 at 5:47 pm Promenade Claire

Succulents make such beautiful garden plants and photographic studies. The B&W’s really work don’t they – all those shapes and textures. Lovely job!

  27. on July 29, 2012 at 12:26 am bakecakecrumbs

    Oh wow, what beautiful pictures.

    • on July 29, 2012 at 9:20 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial
