Superheroes

September 28, 2012 by Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

We mothers are funny creatures.

Most people looking at the photo above would see two teenagers with fresh haircuts.

I see superheroes.

I took this photo of Big Boy (right) and Small Man (left) when we were in town yesterday and loved it so much that I had to share it with you. Even from behind, it’s easy to see that they’re brothers.

Big Boy hurt his leg yesterday morning and was walking with a slight limp.  Small Man automatically, and unconsciously, adjusted his gait to match his brother’s.

They strolled off ahead of Pete and I, and we followed behind, shaking our heads at how enormous they’ve become, marveling at their closeness, and overjoyed by what fine young men they’ve grown up to be.

What a nice story. The boys could be twins!!

  2. on September 28, 2012 at 6:22 am Misky

That just warms my heart to its centre.

I’ve heard that same sentiment stated by friends and family when they speak of their “almost” grown children. It’s a marvel, isn’t it, Celia? I’ll tell you what I’ve told them: Stop feeding them so much! That’ll slow their growth rate down. :)

    Lovely post, Celia.

What a lovely image of your two boys. They look like more than brothers, they look like twins. Are you the little one in your family now, Celia? I’m almost the little one – I’ve still got Alfie and at seven, he’s almost at my shoulders xx

My boys are exactly a year apart and now they are in their 40’s….How I miss those days…now they have their families…cherish the moments….

Hereby proving the value of capturing such moments in a photograph.

  10. on September 28, 2012 at 8:00 am Kavey

    Aw, that’s lovely, Ceeeeel!

  11. on September 28, 2012 at 8:16 am theintolerantchef

Such lovely young men indeed! Doesn’t it make you feel humble to think that they came from you and Pete?
My littlej has just had a growth spurt and is 2cm taller than me now- she is thrilled but its the end of an era…. I guess what I lack in inches I shall have to make up in personality :)

  12. on September 28, 2012 at 8:46 am Norma Chang

That is a most precious photo. Congratulations to you and Pete for raising 2 fine young men.

  13. on September 28, 2012 at 9:03 am Jan

I agree with Norma. Very handsome Celia. I’m just re-reading Harry Potter (I’ve always loved a bit of magic) and your boys fit right in with my idea of young heroic wizards:).

Oh sniff, I know how Thelma, beautiful xxx

  15. on September 28, 2012 at 9:30 am lambsearsandhoney

Lovely pic, Celia. That mother/son bond is quite the thing, isn’t it?

  16. on September 28, 2012 at 9:53 am heidiannie

I agree- with everyone! And you- they are superheros!
Able to lift your heart with a simple smile-
To finish off the loaf of bread with a giant bite-
To grow inches without any fanfare-
And to keep you humble without losing a bit of parental pride!
My youngest is planning on moving out on his own next month-
I’m very aware of his super powers.

What a nice post to read this morning Celia! It’s the dream to have siblings as good friends. Well done ;)

You don’t look old enough to have boys that big :) That’s a magical photo. I love black and white and all the messages that it sends.

  22. on September 28, 2012 at 12:24 pm Glenda

Lovely photo Celia. I bet they are lovely boys too, just like their mum (and handsome, like their dad).

I’m trying to work out which is Small Man, they both look pretty tall to me.

Small Man on the left of the photo, Rose, Big Boy (who’s a few years older) on the right. :)

So beautiful and such a striking picture.
This post made me think of the future, when my two will be young men. Such a surreal feeling.
    Thank you.

Aww, lovely! One day I hope to be looking at my own superhero as he walks ahead of me – for now, I’m watching over my not-quite-four-week old son as he murmurs in his sleep.

    • on September 29, 2012 at 6:26 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Congratulations Jen! How lovely for you..and one day, he’ll be huge! :)

They grow up so quickly, don’t they Pat?

  37. on September 30, 2012 at 11:27 am ChopinandMysaucepan

    Dear Celia,

Congrats on raising two fine boys, Big Boy and Small Man are such endearing nicknames for two brothers. Those huge loaves of bread that you bake will last weeks in my household but definitely not yours!

  38. on September 30, 2012 at 6:59 pm Suz

What a wonderful photo of your fine young men Celia!

  39. on September 30, 2012 at 7:26 pm christinacle

What do you mean ‘easy to see they are brothers’? They look like clones. That is so cool. Great photo.

  40. on September 30, 2012 at 7:32 pm Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Chopinand, thank you! They’re certainly big eaters!

    Suz, thank you!

    Chris, hooray, you’re back! :)

Isn’t it wonderful when someone shares something beautiful we are all blessed by it. We turn and examine our own little brood or relationships with others and we are, just that little bit more thankful for them. Thanks for sharing your beautiful photo with us

    • on October 2, 2012 at 9:54 pm Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Thanks so much, Claire! I’m glad you liked the photo – it’s very special to me!
