Rubber Ducky

January 9, 2013 by Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

We’re in holiday mode.

After an incredibly hectic December, it’s such a pleasure (and a relief!) to be able to relax a little in the new year.

Sydney has a lot to offer in January, and we’ll be spending a bit of time at the Sydney Festival, which runs over the entire month.  One of this year’s most distinctive features is this giant Rubber Duck, which isn’t made of rubber at all.

Created by artist Florentijn Hofman of the Netherlands, this inflatable fabric sculpture sailed into Sydney on the 5th of January and will be happily moored at Darling Harbour until the 23rd.  It’s five storeys high by five storeys wide…

It’s definitely worth a trip in to have a look if you get the chance. It’s surprisingly large and very cheery!  More information is available at the Sydney Festival website.

    You Aussies are quackers! :)

How cute is that?! It does look very cheery, especially in that Sydney sun!
On a different note- I’m sorry to hear about Maggie (I’ve been meaning to comment…) It’s always sad to lose a pet as they are like members of the family. But from your post, it sounds like she had a beautiful life :)

  7. on January 9, 2013 at 1:07 am Abby

Wow, that is huge! And so fun…love the “don’t feed the duck” sign. :-)

This is cute- thanks for sharing!
No one could be uncheered with a 5 story ducky staring at them. (perhaps unmanned, but not uncheered!)

Much nicer than rubber chicken ;-)

  12. on January 9, 2013 at 5:11 am grannysmiff

Ooh I saw that on TV a few nights ago. Isn’t he absolutely gorgeous! I have a ‘thing’ for rubber ducks ever since I heard Kermit the Frog sing ‘The Rubber Ducky Song’

    • on January 9, 2013 at 5:14 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Granny, I think you might be thinking of Ernie from Sesame Street? Both he and Kermit were voiced by Jim Henson.. (we’re huge Muppet fans here!) :)

      • on January 9, 2013 at 5:28 am grannysmiff

OMG Celia you’re right. Unfortunately I had to delve waaay back into the dark murky depths of my memory..oh well I love Ernie too. Must have been the voice thingy. The Muppets are a long time fav of mine even if the voices are now a little muddled :-)

        • on January 9, 2013 at 5:29 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Easy to do – Kermit and Ernie almost had the same voice! :)

Isn’t it just awesome, Celia! We saw it too and got some great shots. Enjoy the holidays love.

I think a friend tweeted this same ducky swimming down the Thames recently. Very cool, eh?

  16. on January 9, 2013 at 7:58 am theintolerantchef

So awesome!!! Imagine how many he would feed though if he was real…enough Peking duck to feed all of Peking! :)

  17. on January 9, 2013 at 7:58 am Rose

I just knew that you would be visiting the duck! Hope you came thrrough yesterday’s heat OK.

    • on January 9, 2013 at 12:41 pm Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Thanks Rose, survived the heat! You guys ok down there?

  18. on January 9, 2013 at 7:59 am lambsearsandhoney

I’ll bet that was a surprise when people first saw it!

  19. on January 9, 2013 at 8:02 am ChgoJohn

I saw this on a local news program very recently. I can only imagine its impact with the little ones. They must be amazed to see something so familiar be so huge. :)

I hope to get out and do some things at the Sydney Festival too. It’s such a great time of year to be in Sydney. I haven’t seen the duck yet but I’ve heard lots about it – not even 6-star cruise ships get that much attention xx

  21. on January 9, 2013 at 8:17 am Claire @ Claire K Creations

As soon as I saw the title of this post I started singing Ernie’s song. Oh so cute! Glad you’re getting some holiday time.

    Hahahahahhahaha!

  23. on January 9, 2013 at 8:51 am Manuela

  24. on January 9, 2013 at 9:14 am Abbington

Happy New Year, Celia! Hope you are surviving the heat, and enjoying the Sydney Festival.

    • on January 9, 2013 at 12:41 pm Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Thanks Abbington, Happy New Year to you too!

  25. on January 9, 2013 at 11:51 am Eha

Yes, well ;) ! Absolutely love January in Sydney with its Festival – always have!! All those wonderful Domain evenings at the Opera and Symphony and . . .All the exhibitions and shows around town from sublime to ridiculous. Saw ‘Ducky’ floating in . . . hate to sound like ruddy Pauline Hanson [won’t get sued, will I?], but ‘Please explain’ :D !

  26. on January 9, 2013 at 12:53 pm Rufus' Food and Spirits Guide

That just made me chuckle. I can’t afford to feed that duck.

  27. on January 9, 2013 at 4:04 pm marilynscottwaters

And what would one feed a five story tall duck in Australia?

My sympathies for the hot weather. We are having some pretty cold days here. Just remarkable.

    Big hugs, Maz.

  28. on January 9, 2013 at 6:06 pm Promenade Claire

    Brilliant!
We’re hearing about the heatwave here – take care my friend!

  29. on January 9, 2013 at 6:26 pm Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Maz, Claire, thank you! It’s been quite hot here in Sydney, but it was ok today. The garden is a little frizzled!

  30. on January 9, 2013 at 7:30 pm Maureen | Orgasmic Chef

Okay who else is singing the Muppets Rubber Ducky song in their heads?? Make it stop! :) This is so cute!

  31. on January 9, 2013 at 11:06 pm Melanie

Oh, how neat! Hadn’t seen or heard of this yet. I love festivals, especially if there are artsy/craftsy things to buy (in my price range).
Enjoy the festival Celia!! (Share more pictures)

  32. on January 15, 2013 at 2:44 am Pat Machin

I think he is the same one who was on the Thames in December. If not, he’s a twin :-) They opened Tower Bridge to let him through!
