In my kitchen…
…are lots and lots of brownies! I made several batches this weekend, trialling out a new Alice Medrich recipe (more to follow in a later post)…
In my kitchen…
…are balancing kiwis! We figured it was a good investment to add to a set of toys that we’ve played with regularly for eight years. We bought this pack online from Tarata in New Zealand…
Kiwis are cool, but they’re much harder to balance…
In my kitchen…
…are free range eggs. Bought eggs. Sadly, our girls have finally stopped laying altogether. But..as we decided, they’ve earned their retirement…
In my kitchen…
…is a wedding gift from Aunt Liz and Uncle Peter. It’s an elegant Lalique crystal jug and it’s barely been out of the cupboard in the last twenty-five years – it just wasn’t something I was keen to put on the dinner table with small children around. I’m hoping to use it more frequently now…
In my kitchen…
…is a container full of coloured Sharpies. Pete can’t understand why we’d ever need anything other than black, but I’ve had great fun labeling freezer containers in different colours…
In my kitchen…
…are two new cookbooks…Jamie’s 15 Minute Meals and Louisa Shafia’s The New Persian Kitchen. The latter was bought on my friend Sally’s recommendation…
In my kitchen…
…is part of our flour stash – Italian pizza, self-raising, plain, Buratto and bakers flours. I took this photo especially for Chicago John…
Finally, in my kitchen…
…is a peek into one of my two utensils drawers. I’m not very tidy!
. . . . .

Ha! It’s good to know that my utensil drawers look like that too! I’m not very tidy either :) I love your stash of colored sharpies too. You’re labeling in style Celia! Look forward to your brownie recipe… I’m so in the mood for one right now! Xx
Emilie, the brownies are coming soon! I’m really happy with them! :)
Oh, I might just faint. Yes, I am about to faint…. I am featured in your IMK?????? OH, that is too good, I am honored! (you will love that book, I am sure)
I am about to write a post to join the fun this month… how about THAT? Now you might be the one about to faint, right? ;-)
Sally, that WILL be fun to peek into your kitchen! And so far I’m really enjoying the book, thanks again for the recommendation! xx
Post set to publish on the 7th! YEAH! ;-)
Joining the fun this month!
So loved seeing a photo of you, Ale! :) xx
I love your Lalique jug Celia. I can understand why you haven’t used it much, but it is nice to use beautiful objects, it makes for happiness, don’t you think?
Jeanette, yes indeed! I always try and use our things – the jug has been the one big exception because I always knew how much it was worth! If we had a tidier house with empty spaces, I’d display it on a table or a bench somewhere, but everything is always quite um.. cluttered.. ;-)
As always Celia, I love everything in your kitchen but oh my goodness, your Lalique crystal jug is just too beautiful for words!
:-) Mandy xo
Mandy, thank you, isn’t it gorgeous? You can see why I got a bit precious with it with two teenagers in the house.. :)
I love those kiwis – they’re fab! Love the sharpies too, coloured pens are much more fun. I’d be interested to know what you think of the JO book, I couldn’t find much to inspire me in that one but I don’t think my tastes have matured along with Jamie’s and I’m not such a fan of quick cooking meat which seems to feature fairly heavily in this book if I recall correctly.
Caroline, I actually love this Jamie book. I didn’t like his 30 minute show, so didn’t buy the book, but this one is just one dish at a time and really approachable. As a rule though, I do like JO cookbooks, and you’re right about the meat, there’s a lot of it in this book (which seems to suit the wolves just fine.. ;-))
I’m keen to get into my Brisbane kitchen and doing some cooking. I have been between 2 houses in Italy and have cooked almost nothing for ages.
Deb, with all that ready food around you in Italy, why would you need to cook? :)
Love your stash of flours, Celia! I have a stash quite like it- although the names on the bags are different! The pitcher is lovely, truly lovely- how nice that you are pulling out the more delicate of gifts when they are no longer in danger.
And your utensil drawer would be quite at home in my kitchen. I try to keep the knives and sharp stuff separate- but other than that- the drawers are all rather jumbled.
I’m going to try to get one of these posts up in the next couple of days.
Heidi, next time I’ll take a photo of my knife racks, they’re pretty cool actually. Definitely no knives in the utensils drawers, although the graters are in there…
What a fun post and thank you for the peek into your kitchen :)
Thanks for visiting! :)
Celia, I love that jug! How very beautiful. Not surprised you’ve waited till now to bring it out… what a joy to be able to use it. And the Persian book sounds really interesting! I look forward to the brownie recipe.
Thanks Lizzy. The Persian book is a great read, although I haven’t cooked anything from it yet. And I’m very chuffed with the brownie recipe! :)
The Lalique jug is a treasure….your kitchen posts are so much fun…
Norma, thank you! I love them, it’s like you all drop in once a month for a visit and a cup of tea! :)
Gorgeous jug indeed Celia! I have a couple of lead crystal bowls and things that never get phone out for the same reason :) You have convinced me to buy some of the balancing acts for littlej’s Christmas stocking as she’s intrigued with puzzles and logic games. And please let me know what you think of the Persian Kitchen book, I’ve had a very slight bent towards those flavours lately. Love your drawer too, even me with my OCD has one like that- except all my handles must point in the same direction :) xox
Hahaha…Becca, I can just imagine all the handles facing the one way. Our drawer wouldn’t close if I did that, everything has to be jigsawed in a bit. The balancing animals are a winner – the jungle set has been the most popular here! xxx
I always know when the calendar has rolled over into a new month – Celia’s got her post up! I think we’ve all got utensil drawers that look like that. Those dear girls – they did you proud for a few years. It’s nice they’re having a retirement instead of being given the final solution. I love the wedding gift and how lovely to have a wedding gift that’s survived – we have just a few still standing xx
Charlie, it’s only survived because we haven’t used it. Although we do have a few pieces that have been in use for nearly 25 years, that’s pretty good going! :)
Timely post Celia – I went to get some flour to feed my starter and ‘discovered’ a whole stash of flour in another box that I had forgotten about. It sits right next to the box with the flour I have been using so I must have been quite blind! Where did you get your pizza flour? I have been making more pizzas for the kids lately so it is probably worth buying a big bag of it.
We had an old friend stay with us a few weeks ago and when I made him a coffee in the morning he asked if it was one of the stainless steel cups they had given us for our wedding. He was so thrilled to see them in daily use in our house all these years later.
I am trying to be more like Andrew who uses the new/good stuff immediately and a lot. I tend to ‘save them for later or special occasions’ and then forget that I even have them. Use the jug…make a nice home made cordial or a jug of some exotic cocktail and sit out on your deck and enjoy the winter sun that has come out today!
SG, the pizza flour is fantastic but exy – my friend Tania at Lario’s sells it – http://www.lario.com.au. Hasn’t it been gloriously sunny the last couple of days!
Celia I saw that first post and instantly craved brownies. I wonder if I have any dark chocolate hiding in the pantry. It sounds like the perfect treat to christen my new kitchen!
I’m glad I’m not the only one with a messy utensil drawer. Actually most of mine are on the kitchen bench right now. I have no idea how I fitted them all in the one drawer in the unit.
Looking forward to seeing what you think about Jamie’s book. I’ve been tossing up whether to buy it or not for ages.
Claire, I really like this one of Jamie’s, we’ve already made a couple of things from it. I think the true test is if you enjoy his current tv series on 15 minute meals, because the book really is just like that. Oooh, and a little headsup, the brownies use 100% cacao chocolate! :)
Celia Love your IMK posts and this is no exception. Thanks also for the link you gave yesterday, real food for thought for me (I love that phrase, it also seems apt for your blog) and I have forwarded to my daughter..
Madge, thank you! I hope everything is going ok for your family.. x
My utensil drawer could be a carbon copy of yours and I even sorted it out a month ago and somehow it has reverted to having to be rummaged through again. Absolutely love the Lalique.
Carmen, it was only one drawer of three. We don’t so much sort it as give it a good shake every now and again.. ;-)
Those balancing figures are so cool. I think I have to look them up! Are they available outside of NZ too?
The crystal jug is beautiful. You still get to enjoy it as a family! I always have an assortment of sharpies too. You drawer would be at home in my kitchen too! Might look like a jumble, but everything has its spot and is easily found! My counters are usually clean…..but the utensil drawer is a different story! Nice post!
Manuela, they ship everywhere, I know that because I just sent some to my friend Dan in California as a birthday present! The NZ dollar is quite low at the moment compared to the Aus and US, so it worked out quite well. And I’m so encouraged that I’m not the only one with a messy drawer! :)
Absolutely love your Lalique jug . . . then going from cor blimey to . . . those kiwis are beautifully made and I would so like to ‘play’ with them! Also I hope you use JO’s 15 minute book even half as much as I do – absolutely love it: naturally tweak every second recipe but there are SO many wondeful ideas and here in the informal countryside like his current style of plating!!
Eha, I’ve really enjoyed Jamie’s book. I knew I would, as I quite like his show as well. He has a new video channel on YouTube called Food Tune – worth checking out, as it has lovely clips of him and his kids in it as well! :)
Thanks so much: shall suss out at the earliest opportunity!
I too had to purchase eggs this week. I am hoping that the chickens are just still on strike, and normal egg laying will shortly resume. I absolutely love the 15 mins meals book. It would be easily my favourite of all his books, and the one that I have used the most. Will be interested to se what you think. I have been thinking I need to make more brownies (I freeze them for quick desserts) but now I am going to wait to see what you have been up to.
Tania, I’m really enjoying Jamie’s book! The brownie recipe uses 100% cacao chocolate, and I’m a bit hooked on them at the moment…
Black is so boring when there are so many colours out there :)
Tandy, so true! And Sharpies really are the funnest things.. :)
Hi Celia, this is the first time I’ve posted here but read your blog quite a bit.
I use your romertopf sourdough recipe on a regular basis and love it!
Anyway I just did an in my kitchen post on my blog this afternoon.
Sandra, how fabulous to have you joining in! Thanks for playing! :)
I’m glad to see I’m not alone in my utensils drawer… It’s ok, the really scary draw is the bottom drawer containing rubber bands, batteries, duct tape… and anything that we’ve hoarded over the last 10 years that might be useful one day…
That Lalique crystal jug would also look lovely with some flowers in it :)
ED, I think the jug needs something with bubbles in it. Or ruby red grapefruit juice. Nothing that will stay in it too long though, as it has a high lead content, as all the crystal did back then. Your drawer sounds like an Aladdin’s cave.. :)
G’day! I love your In The Kitchen series, true!
Always enjoy seeing what’s in other people’s kitchens and had to laugh about the utility drawer as no matter HOW many times, I organize, it always seems to want to look like yours which I would class as “organized with love” as seems all the utensils are busying themselves chatting up one another too! lol
Thanks for sharing what’s in your kitchen with a unique view! :)
Cheers! Joanne
Joanne, it was such fun peeking into your kitchen, thanks for joining in this month! :)
Hehe I have a few drawers like that! Although in my defence I know where it all is -it’s just that nobody else does :P
Lorraine, no-one else needs to! :)
Oh, Celia. I couldn’t wait to get here and you certainly didn’t disappoint. And that’s only PART of your stash. Wow! I guess a ton of flour is needed when you’re an expert baker. :)
I’ve always enjoyed these IMK posts, Celia, and this one has left me grinning ear to ear. Thanks for sharing and for the grins.
John, I avoided taking photos of the packets of 00 and remilled semolina, or the extra bag of bakers flour, or the assorted packs of rye, spelt and kamut. I didn’t want you to think I was bonkers. :D
Oh those brownies look so good!!! …and I laughed at you drawer, I have four drawers that look like that! Although maybe I have OCD tendencies because the first drawer has sharp items. The second drawer has silver items the third has plastic cooking utensils and the final one is wooden. They all still look a mess though ;)
Can I join you in my kitchen on the 3rd July, I have my story ready to publish on that date.
Julie, your post is up! I’ll link it straight away! Thanks so much for joining in! Oh, and I agree – sharp knives need their own drawer. That’s less about OCD and more about being a mother, I think. :)
It’s hard to keep utensils tidy, don’t beat yourself up about it. Love, love, love the jug!
Cindy, thank you! I love the jug too! :)
[…] Lime Cordial for making me feel so “welcomed” to submit my first blog post towards her In My Kitchen […]
I missed not doing one of these last month and will definitely link one in this month :) I love the balancing kiwis and your new cookbooks – I have the Jamie one and have seen and admired the other – and also think your coloured markers are excellent and very useful for adding brightness! Also, I’m a neat person and my kitchen drawers *still* tend to go like that so I’d say it’s just a fact of kitchen life…unavoidable ;)
Kari, look forward to your post! And you’ve made me feel much better, if even neat people end up with drawers like that! :)
I think perhaps drawers are meant to be messy – out of sight and out of mind and all that ;)
My In My Kitchen post for July is now up! http://www.bitesizedthoughts.com/2013/07/in-my-kitchen-july-2013.html
I do enjoy your kitchen Celia. Using beautiful objects like your jug is always difficult – you want to use and appreciate them, but it’s awful if they get broken. How long a gap is there between clumsy children and being old and dropping things :). Love your flour stash but please, don’t publish the brownie recipe – I just don’t need any more temptation after trying the Butterscotch Bars.
Anne, I’m already dropping things, so I’d better get the jug out soon. And I’m sorry love but the brownie recipe is coming – you’ll have to close your eyes. Actually, maybe the timing will be right and you’ll be on your hike when it goes up.. :D
Celia I joined the “In my kitchen ” blog post again this month.
I love these kiwis….thinking of buying them for a gift to my australian friends!!
Ale, they’re a great gift! x
Love that you’ve showed us your utensil draw, very reassuring but I think I’ll have to keep my own disgraceful draw firmly closed when writing about my kitchen. Those bags of flour convey a great, wholesome feeling of so much good baking to come and I’m curious about that Persian cookbook. Thanks so much for sharing your kitchen with us..
Andrea, you’re too funny, I doubt your drawer could be more disgraceful that the one I didn’t photograph (mainly because I can’t get it open easily) :)
Such a delightful collection of wondrous objects this month. I love that jug!
Misky, I love it too! Thank you!
Love the Lalique jug. You should use it every day! Let me know how the 15 Minute Meals book works for you. I’ve tried a couple of recipes from it that I snagged off YouTube and have it on my wish list. (The watermelon salad was tops!)
I want to make your odds and ends focaccia again. I made it and took it to a party but only got a tiny piece.
What else… I did an oven roasted tomato, onion and garlic pasta sauce that was nummers. We are in the full swing of summer veg here. Too much zucchini. Hugs, Maz.
Maz, I really like almost all of Jamie’s books, but I didn’t like his 30 minute show – too frenetic. The 15 minute one is far more relaxed. Thanks so much for trying the focaccia! xx
I agree about Jamie’s 30 Minute show, too many “tricks” by buying preprepared foods. Precooked beets? = just why? And doesn’t it take time to “boil the kettle”? However, I do cook his mustard chicken all the time for the family.
I really liked his “Ministry of Food” cookbook. Probably my favorite. Tons of good, honest, fast cooking there.
What’s your favorite cookbook? For me, I’d have to say “The Moosewood Cookbook” Maz.
that is a beautiful jug! You know..we all have a drawer like that. I was fooling myself when I bought a ‘drawer organizer’ as the family just throws the stuff in the drawer on top of the organizer. sigh.
Anyway, I squeaked my June post in last night at 11:30 pm…
http://dishnthekitchen.wordpress.com/2013/06/30/in-my-kitchen-june-edition/
Happy Canada Day!
Bernice, thanks for joining in! We can’t even keep the cutlery drawer in order, and that has a little plastic unit in it! :)
Celia. Since you’re a big BC fan, kid number two says to search out a BBC radio show called ‘Cabin Pressure’. you can find various links online.
It’s smarmy British humour :)
[…] If you’d like to see other kitchen posts look here- at Celia’s blog- Fig Jam and Lime Cordial. […]
Celia I’m glad you ‘are not very tidy’ as you said in your post. Please don’t take this the wrong way but it makes you ‘normal’ like the rest of us :-)
Gee thanks Merryl, I think. ;-)
BTW I forgot to say I love coloured Sharpies too :-)
I’m having so much fun with mine! :)
So much colour and goodness in your kitchen as always Celia. The brownie looks very good! Sharpies are so handy aren’t they…I think I need coloured ones after seeing yours. Great flour stash…a girl can never have enough flour :)
Jane, I think I need to buy you some coloured sharpies if I ever see them again and send them to you! And you’re so right, a girl can never have enough flour! :D
Oh your jug is GORGEOUS! And I love the drawer – I have 4 like that. Love the balancing kiwis too – guessing they would have gone the way of the jug with little kiddies :)
Mel, actually we’ve had balancing animals for eight years, and they’re incredibly durable! The kiwis are just a recent addition to the set! There’s more here.. :)
https://figjamandlimecordial.com/2013/06/16/balancing-animals/
oh they are fabulous! Thanks – love the elephants
Add me to the list too please Celia Sweetie :) xox
Done, darling! :) xx
Delighted to have rediscovered your blog, after losing all my “favourites” in a computer swap-over. Don’t give up hope on your hens! They need to replenish their bodies after producing all that lovely protein on a semi-daily basis. Ours have been “resting” for a couple months now, partially due to our staggering Perth summer. Lysine is a great amino acid supplement (I mix it into a bran mash) and of course shell grit will give them an ongoing calcium boost. And if you ever actually have leftovers from your kitchen scraps (you are so creative!), then they will also enjoy & benefit from those. Loved your earlier words about building a neighbourhood community too. :o)
Ruby, thanks for stopping by. Our girls are ISA browns, so they’re near the end of their laying cycles anyway. It’s not a problem, come spring, we’ll add some new birds to the flock!
Oh I think we should have a contest to see who has the tidiest kitchen utensil drawer. Then she (or he) is out! LOL I’ve got one large drawer and three containers and half the time I can’t find a thing.
I love the balancing kiwis. I doubt I’d be able to get them to stand up.
Thanks for loving your girls enough to let them enjoy what’s left of their lives.
M, I’m now starting to wonder if anyone has a neat utensils drawer? :) And thank you, the girls all seem ridiculously robust for chooks that don’t lay! ;-)
I’m sure anyone that actually cooks shouldn’t have tidy utensil drawers…surely not. Happy to see all those big bags of flour too, I’m guessing yours doesn’t have little fingers constantly delving in there with measuring cups? :-)
Your dear old chooks dilemma, I must have missed that post…I’m not sure, but I thought some of my mums chooks were chalking up the ten year old bench mark at one stage, WELL into their retirement years. It’s a bugger having to buy eggs though.
Brydie, that’s too funny – I can just imagine small monkeys casting spells by throwing flour into the air! :)
I can actually sat that the brownies in th above photo were delicious!!! So lovely to see you again today Celia!
Anna, it was SO nice to see you! xx
holy moly Celia, that’s a lot of flour!! Sourdough for all!
My utensils drawer looks identical. Its great you can even open yours! Half the time, mine only opens a smidgen, then something gets caught, and its a shit fight trying to jigg something around to get the drawer to open!
Lisa, you’d be surprised how quickly we go through it all! And you made me laugh – we have one utensil drawer that doesn’t open easily, I have to shake and jiggle it to get it unstuck! :D
I think the only neat utensils drawer I’ve ever seen is in the IKEA catalogue ;)
My IMK post is up! YAY I love doing these :) http://gourmetwog.wordpress.com/2013/07/04/in-my-kitchen-july-2013/
[…] In My Kitchen series was started by my friend Celia of Fig Jam and Lime Cordial. It’s an opportunity to have a peek in other bloggers kitchens. I’m always worried […]
Adore the kiwis.. of course!! My utensils drawerS are like Lisa’s! getting them open is a trick, I find if I shake them as i open them sometimes they loosen up. It may have been a better idea to get deeper drawers but i am sure i would find a way to fill them too far! have a lovely day.. c
Celi, yes, shaking works! I wonder if lots of shallow drawers might be the better option, the deeper they are, the more we can stand wooden spoons on their ends to get stuck in the runners.. ;-)
Loved your brownies that I was a recipient of. I would say you have the recipe right. I was impressed with your stash of flours the other day when I saw them and would say they look like stars in a photo. Your utensil draw looks tidier than mine( or all of mine because I have a lot of utensils). Sad about the girls quitting work….clocking off the old egg drop….x
Hehehe…the stash is a bit tragic isn’t it, T, and you know how much more I have tucked away.. ;-)
Love the balancing kiwis, we could definitely get into that. What a beautiful pitcher, it is certainly time to let it adorn your table, at dinner or otherwise. I bought one at an antique store last month, you’ve inspired me to include it in my post (which is late). And I’m with you on the colored markers, you never know what mood you’ll be in when it comes time to label a meal for the freezer–the color should always match your mood. :)
Judy, can’t wait to see your antique jug! :) We’ve been having a blast with the kiwis, but they ARE much harder to balance! :) xx
Ah, finally done, thanks for the inspiration! :) http://savoringtoday.com/2013/07/03/in-my-kitchen-july-2013/
Judy yaaay! It’s on the list! :)
Thanks Celia, you’re the best!
Oh, and sorry about the ad that appears at the beginning, not intended, just got surprised that I had to get it on a post TODAY and this was the only one I had ready! IMK is totally fun for me, love being part of it. :)
Judy, I don’t see an ad when I click on your post?

Thanks Misky! So nice that you HAVE a kitchen again now! :)
Good morning Celia, I have just posted my IMK post. Linked to my comment, thank you!
Thanks Jane! xx
For a minute there I thought you took a picture of my utensil drawer. What a gorgeous crystal jug. Now that you mention it, I probably should check for all those delicate things that have been stored away until my daughter got older. Of course now that she’s older, I’ve become Ms. Clumsy.
Diana, that seems to be the trade off, doesn’t it? I seem to be dropping everything these days! :)
Hi Celia – after reading these posts for a very long time I thought, ‘Why not join in?’ So here I am with my first post! I wasn’t sure how o let you know so I’ve left a note here. Thanks.
http://tiffinblog.blogspot.com.au/2013/07/in-my-kitchen-july-13.html
Thanks for joining in! :)
I have to say that I really love all the items in your kitchen this month but to me the standout is your Lalique pitcher. I have a few pieces of Lalique and love them.
Karen, thank you – it’s our only Lalique piece, and you can imagine what it was like to get that as a wedding present when we were only 24 years old! :)

Such a lovely post – the utensil drawer looks a little like ours – full of happy chaos – I love coloured utensils because they are so much easier to find. Your crystal jug is very elegant and I am interested to see you flour stash – I bought some in bulk recently and am now not sure where to put it. And your brownies sound delicious – worth all the sugar rush.

I love your balancing Kiwis and your crystal jug is stunning. Those huge bags of flour are impressive, I have many types of flour but none of them are in quantities that large.
I didn’t get around to writing up a second IMK post last month but I have just posted one for July.
Mel, you’d be surprised how quickly teenage boys can eat their way through a 25kg bag of bread flour.. ;-) Thanks for joining in!
The Lalique crystal jug is stunning! And the balancing kiwis are cute, I think every household should have them – mine included !
Claire, the kiwis are great fun, but much harder to balance than the other sets! Perfect challenge for my now older boys! :)
I just discovered your blog this morning. IN MY KITCHEN is a brilliant idea! I would be honored if you would include my blog post this month.
http://auntshoe.blogspot.com/2013/07/in-my-kitchen-july-2013.html
