In my kitchen…
…were Halloween chocolates, ready for little Trick or Treaters…
In my kitchen…
…are a dozen bottles of Rochester Ginger. I buy a case every year from the lovely importer Rob and include the bottles in our Christmas gift hampers. Rob sold this year’s case to me at the discounted price of $195 (he matched the special they had on offer last December) which included free metro delivery to all capital cities (and 50% freight discount to everywhere else in Australia).
I’ve just spoken to him and he’s happy to extend the $195 price to any FJALC readers who would like to buy a case. Please just mention that you read about it here. Best of all, they’ll gift wrap the bottles if you ask!
Rob’s contact details are on the Rochester Ginger website.
In my kitchen…
…is a large ricotta slice, made to our original recipe, but substituting Pete’s Greek yoghurt for the sour cream. We think it’s even better this way! We spent a couple of months in 2009 experimenting with ricotta cake recipes and the end result was this simple and delicious slice…
In my kitchen…
…is a new egg holder. Inspired by Moya’s post last month, I bought this little red ceramic tray to hold the eggs needed for baking – it stops them rolling all over the bench…
In my kitchen…
…are tissue paper flowers. Some people meditate, I make paper flowers and watch QI…
In my kitchen…
…are three incredibly old tins of cherries. They don’t have an expiry date, but I think the stamp on the bottom implies that they were packed in 2002. They were bought from the Jam Factory in Young – does anyone know if it’s still there?
In my kitchen…
…are sour cherry marshmallows – our latest flavour experiment. They’re my favourite, although Pete prefers the passionfruit ones…
In my kitchen…

In my kitchen…

Hi Celia
You have been busy, as always. I am definitely going to take a leaf out of your book and make some marshmallows. They look so lovely. I love your 2002 cherries. I get so grumpy when everything has a 12 month expiry date. Lots of preserved food will last much longer than that. Here is a link to my IMK post. Have a great month and see you next month :)
http://passionfruitgarden.com/2014/10/31/in-my-kitchen-november-2014/
When I took the photo of the cherries, I said to Pete, “Glenda will be happy..” :) I hope they’re ok when we finally get around to opening them (which will be soon, as I’ve planted them on the kitchen bench and refuse to put them back in the cupboard!).
Celia, they will be perfect. I assumed you had used them in your marshmallows. BTW I made some today. Just plain. I decided to start simple. I will know tomorrow how they are. They certainly look the part.
Those flowers are amazing! As always i love the sweet stuff- the pie and marshmallows look delicious. I’ll pop my post up over the next few days xx.
Thanks Melissa! The marshmallows were great fun to make!
I make my own ginger ale in flavor such as raspberry and cherry and regular ginger as well. I will do a post it is so easy and taste delicious, and I think you would love it! I so enjoy your chocolate post they always look so great! and I have tried your method it work out nicely and have even made chocolate pecan turtles. Here in Texas the pecan trees are loaded with nuts and all of the state parks have several varieties. They encourage picking them up so I try to get a good stock pile to last through out the year. Hope you had a Happy Halloween.
Lury
I’m so glad the chocolate tempering worked for you! I’d love to have fresh pecans – I’ve always found the US ones to be the best quality! Your ginger ale sounds delicious!
The egg tray is lovely. What a clever idea. Your flowers are beautiful. Such nice sweet treats in your kitchen. Interesting post as always!
In my kitchen at the moment are pumpkin chip cupcakes, holiday pumpkin cookies, and a yeast pumpkin bread.
M, the egg tray has made a huge difference – we bring in 4 – 5 eggs a day, so there’s somewhere to put them before they’re dated and put into the fridge, plus when I pull eggs out, they don’t roll all over the bench. I have no idea why we didn’t think of this before! Sounds like your kitchen is very autumnal! :)
In my kitchen is nothing much. I am in the process for closing Casa Debbio for a few months. I have turned off the fridge and tomorrow I will turn off the electricity and close the shutter and say goodbye for a few months.
Deb, your stays in Italy go by so quickly!
Wonderful things. Your gift boxes are stellar! I completely understand about the meditative power of paper. Your flowers are lovely, they would make nice bows on presents. I’ve been zoning out with wire wrapped jewelry. Warm hugs, Maz
Maz, did I ever mention that I used to make chainmaille jewellery? I think you’d LOVE it. I bought my rings and kits from the fabulous urbanmaille site: http://www.urbanmaille.com xx
A lovely post, as always, Celia. You’ve sparked my interest with the Rochester Ginger (though I wouldn’t have that many people to gift it to)… what is it, love? Do tell. I’m impressed that you’re mastering the art of making marshmallow… I have not made it for decades and really must do it again soon! I’ve asked my friend and colleague from Young Tourism to tell me about the jam factory… I don’t recall seeing it. Your ricotta cake sounds amazing… mouth is watering. And the egg holder is a good idea… I have a couple of small blue/lilac plastic ones that come in handy. Happy cooking xox
Lizzy, the Rochester Ginger is a spicy ginger drink – you can drink it straight, or use it as a mixer. It’s quite sweet with a big kick. We keep it as a non-alcoholic drink – it’s very nice over ice. Thanks for finding out about the jam factory for me! :)
My pleasure love xo
I would get a little red egg holding tray but first we have to find the eggs, then we have to stop the resident Currawongs from stealing them and eating them…THEN we can get some eggs ;). As usual your kitchen is steaming with possibilities. That ricotta slice looks like the stuff that gustatory dreams are made of. The Italians just “do” food so magnificently well. They home in on the essence of what they are cooking and amplify it to the max. Gorgeous stuff and a wonderful share. Cheers Celia :)
Fran, I thought you were sitting on 10 dozen eggs! :) Maybe you need to stop fighting the Currawongs.. :D
I am definitely and finally going to make that ricotta slice. I hope you had lots of trick or treaters. I am sure if they knew what was good for them they would waiting at the door of your house.
PS Did you return the favour of a plate of brawn with chocolates?
Tania, we had 25 Trick or Treaters arrive at the door all at the same time. Can you imagine what that was like? ;-) And no chocolate for brawn, although he did get a large glass of my 1977 Dow’s Vintage Port.. :)
Happy Halloween!
Thank you! Hope you had a happy one too!
Nice looking Mulberry Pie! When I was kid there was a grumpy old man who would put his hose on all the kids who ate his mulberries.
There were plenty of other trees around, but we went to his anyway because it was more fun and dangerous.
Loads of lollies here too but not a single trick or treater. Plenty left for Kid :)
Hahaha…that happened to us last year as well (the leftover lollies, not the hose for stealing mulberries). This year I realised I had to hang a decoration out the front or the kids wouldn’t knock – polite, well trained lot we have here.. :D
wonderful stuff celia..as always..the ricotta slice has me itching to get off this computer and out of bed and into the kitchen..x
Jane, I hope you like the ricotta slice. We love it!
Wow – I’d love to spend a day in your kitchen! Everything looks incredible. The ricotta cake, the chocolates, the marshmallows – fabulous. And how lucky are the recipients of your care packages. I’m jealous!
Hahaha…the care packages really did go down a treat! :)
I want to come and live in your kitchen, esp as it is spring there now!
Yes, do come! Leave Tima at home, please. :D :D
Oh lordy, your ricotta cake looks to-die-for. And the trick/treaters are in for a TREAT when they knock on your door.
Here’s my IMK post Celia. Once again, thanks so much for hosting.
http://milk-and.blogspot.com.au/2014/11/in-my-kitchen-november-2014-japan.html
Jennifer, the T or Ters were SOOO cute. They were all under 10, including a couple of babies! :)
It’s the ricotta cheese slice that captured my attention! “Simple and delicious” ~ sounds like what I need after my efforts to eat my way through silver beet and broad beans. The marshmallow looks good too. Sour cherry would knock back the sweetness of the marshmallow.
(My efforts to cook silver beet and broad beans are in my “In my Kitchen…” post for this month. http://annelawson.wordpress.com/2014/10/31/in-my-kitchen-4/
Thanks so much for hosting it.)
Anne, our chard is going crazy in the garden too! Look forward to seeing what you’re doing with yours!
lucky you celia! i adore mulberries and our tree had to be cut down. :(( we had lots of lovely trick and treaters last night. such fun! My sister and I used to make marshmallows when we were kids. so delish and better than shop ones!

cheers
sherry
Sherry, I’m sorry to hear that about your tree! But they can grow sooo huge!
Celia, I love how you make up care packages, and gift hampers. Such thoughtful gifts especially around exams for the kids. Exams can be such stressful times. We too indulge in QI, most times Mr Fry has us in stitches!! Have a great November. Here is a link to my IMK post this month:
http://makeitbakeitsnapit.blogspot.com.au/2014/11/in-my-kitchen-november-2014.html
Kirsty, I’ve always baked for exams – if nothing else, a treat in times of stress is always a good thing! Did you know that you can watch the UK extended versions of QI on YouTube? :)
Brilliant post Celia, the ricotta slice and the mulberry pie look fantastic and the ginger would be wonderful.you have outdone yourself with this one,I am very jealous..well done Celia ..btw I’m fairly sure the jam factory in Young is still going but maybe under different ownership..
Thank you! Lizzy found out that there is still a jam factory there, but it’s no longer JD’s. It’s a shame, it was a great place to visit!
Hmm mulberry pie so good, Christmas must be coming. I make mine with a lattice top, not sure why. Have loved Rochester Ginger since reading about it on your blog Celia, and that is a good price.
Madge, we love that they’ll wrap the RG bottles for us, so we always have a gift on hand at Christmas time!
That mulberry pie has my name on it! Have you opened the cherries yet? I’m curious to see what’s inside.
Nancy, not yet, but we will soon! I’m refusing to put them away, so they’ll have to be used up in the near future!

That Mulberry pie looks sensational but mulberries are a Sydney thing. I have a struggling Mulberry tree that tries, but never manages to make it. I love that ricotta /yoghurt slice and will be heading to the link very soon.
Francesca, do you get other berries in Victoria? We can’t seem to grow raspberries and blueberries very well here…
We get heaps of other berries- loganberries, raspberries, boysenberries. The invasion is about to happen. Need more freezer space. x
G’day! What a great post and can feeling your food energy Celia!
Your ricotta slice is on my list and just looking and reading about made my day!
My blog post is live now too!
Cheers! Joanne
Thanks Jo! Hope you’re having a great week!
I do love the sound of the sour cherry marshmallows. I used to make paper flowers and haven’t done so for years – you brought back a lot of memories! And your HSC care packages are just gorgeous. The recipients must have felt very treasured xx
Charlie, I adore Alex and Rory, so it was a treat to be able to both feed them and see them over the past few weeks. They’re all done now! :)

Oh gosh Celia – sour cherry marshmallows and mulberry pie! I wish I was in your kitchen ;) Your trick or treat bags are really cute too.
I’ve been organised with my IMK post this month! It is up at http://www.bitesizedthoughts.com/2014/11/in-my-kitchen-november-2014.html
Kari, I wonder if you can make a vegan version of the marshmallows? And the mulberry pie was just fabulous – the boys loved it!
Still traveling Celia, so no post from me this month but will enjoy everyone else’s! For what, besides ginger ale, do you use the ginger? We have just spent a very cold, wet Halloween in the US, on the road with nary a trick or treater in sight. So glad I didn’t have children to take out in the nasty weather. 2c and rain!!
Ardys, hope you’re having fun on your travels! We drink the ginger straight on ice, use it in mixed drinks and cocktails and mix it with hot water when we have colds! :)
Mulberry pie, oh my! Such lovely things in your kitchen this month, Celia. Here’s a few things from my kitchen. Happy November to you, Celia. http://miskcooks.com/2014/11/01/in-my-kitchen-november-2014/
Happy November to you too, dearheart! xx
You always have the best stuff in your kitchen!
Thank you for saying that! I always think I’m going to run out of things to show you all, but it never seems to happen! :)
As one who had two eggs roll off the bench and splat on the floor this week, I would love that little red egg tray. You’ve certainly been busy in the kitchen. Your ricotta cake sounds yummy.
M, you need to go out and get a little egg tray straight away. Send John! :D
Mmm, that mulberry pie has me ready for Thanksgiving. Your kitchen is as busy as ever, Celia, and full of delicious treats. :)
Judy, that’s right, Thanksgiving is coming soon, isn’t it? I never know how you all manage to fit that in before Christmas! :)
Amazing! What a busy bee you’ve been! <3
Hahaha…yes, it’s always a bit busy in the kitchen! :)
Hehe now did you get many trick or treaters? Would you be ok if they came in a vampire costume? ;)
I’m completely fine with little tiny vampires, but the big ones can still be scary! :)
I wish I could trick-or-treating at your doorstep and you asking me to go straight into the kitchen and pick what I like! I’ll make sure I’ll have the biggest basket I can bring, LOL!!!
Gourmet Getaways
Ha! That’s why I packaged them up – so everyone would get just ONE bag! :D
Absolutely adore your HSC care packages Celia!
I will do my post tomorrow morning.
Have a beautiful week ahead.
:-) Mandy xo
Thanks lovely! Hope things have settled down a bit for you over there! xx
Things look really sweet in your kitchen. That pie looks to die for.
And here I was thinking it was a messy looking pie. Thanks Greg! :)
[…] is here already! Where has the time gone? It is time to join Celia at Fig Jam and Lime Cordial for another In My Kitchen […]
Such yummy treats again! You have some lucky trick or treaters in your neighborhood. The ricotta slice looks delicious, I will have to try it sometime. I just got my IMK post up too, thanks for always being such a wonderful hostess.

I wish I lived in your kitchen sometimes, it is always filled with delicious things that I want to eat :) Mulberry pie is my favourite, but my little mulberry tree only has enough on it for me to go out every morning and have a little feed then have the rest of my breakfast :) thanks so much for sharing as always and here is my little IMK for this month!
Liz x
http://www.themotherhubbardscupboard.com/in-my-kitchen-november-2014/
Liz, mulberries are such a rare treat – you either live near a tree and have heaps, or you miss out. They never seem to make it to the shops! :)
hehe i agree that craft is far more relaxing than meditating!!!
Hahaha…but meditating is less house-cluttering! :D
Oh I do love mulberries Celia, and that’s a great deal on the ginger too! Littlej has exam week next week so I’ll be making her up lots of yummy ‘study aids’,last week it was lollypops but homemade treats will definitely be better xox
Becca, you could make homemade lollipops? :D
Mulberry pie… heaven. When we were walking the back streets and lanes of Newtown on the Garage Sale Trail we noted many almost ripe mulberry trees, some of them are amazing old and huge. I remeber the Young Maid brand. I guess the contents of the tins would be fine, the G.O. certainly wouldn’t throw them out!
ED, we won’t throw them out, but hopefully when we open them, they won’t be full of mushy cherries! :)
Add me in too please sweetie :) xox
http://intolerantchef.blogspot.com.au/2014/11/in-my-kitchen-november-2014.html
I made your chocolate truffles, topped with vanilla marshmallow for my birthday cake. Was v decadent, served with rose jam ice cream… Made for a v sticky kitchen though..
Hahaha… that IS a sticky combination!
My kids were out collecting mulberries yesterday, not enough to make your delicious looking pie though unfortunately. I’ve got a thing for ricotta at the moment so will definitely be giving the cake a go. I especially love the egg holder! I can’t help you on the Jam Factory question but I’ve been doing a massive declutter and found all sorts of tins way past their used by date too, seems like we must have had a thing for red kidney beans at some stage as I’ve got multiples of them. Here is my post for this month, thank you so much for sharing …
http://www.boiledeggsandsoldiers.com/2014/11/in-my-kitchen-monthly-round-up/
Vicki, isn’t it funny how many things get caught at the back of our cupboards! I’m pretty sure there’s a tin of bamboo shoots that I’ve been carrying around since our last house move!
Celia your kitchen is always so full of delights. Oh how I wish I could have knocked on your door on Friday. Lucky kids!
Claire, thank you! 25 kids did knock on the door, so it was great not to waste anything!
I love your HSC care packages – they are sure to blitz their exams now. And your pie..I want a piece right now!
I’m sure they did blitz their exams! I know both boys are very happy to be finished! :)

There is always so much happening in your kitchen Celia, I am in awe of the breadth of your skills. Mulberries are always a welcome gift, I love their intense flavour….sadly my mulberry growing friends have shifted away from their tree…I really appreciate the effort you put into hosting IMK. Thanks. Here’s my contribution for November http://wp.me/p2frs2-1Jz
Sandra, we’re the neighbours who adore the mulberry tree, because we’re TWO houses away from it. The ones right next door get their laundry covered in purple bird poop! :D
what a delicious lot of treats in your kitchen this month! I miss mulberries so much. I love the egg holder :)
Tandy, can you grow mulberries in SA? It’s a big commitment though – HUGE tree!
Isn’t that egg tray a good idea – it would stop that frantic dive for an egg that’s just about to roll off the table (even I draw the line at scooping up egg from the floor).
Fab looking mulberry pie – a slice would go down very well just this minute. Damn, now that’s all I can think about.
Anne, I KNOW. I keep smacking myself on the head wondering why I didn’t think of getting an egg tray earlier!
I’ve never tasted a mulberry pie. Looks like I’ll have to change that next time I have the opportunity. And I like those care packages! Holiday gifts are not far away. Now, if I could only figure out some attractive packaging…
Here’s my November post. Thanks for running this forum!
http://heritagerecipebox.com/2014/11/04/in-my-november-kitchen/
Clara, yes, it’s November, so time to start thinking about what we’re putting into the Christmas hampers this year! :)
I can’t wait to try that ricotta slice!
Clare, it’s really very easy – pastry is a little fiddly because it’s so short, but worth it! :)

Liz
Thanks for joining in, Liz! It’s great to have you! :)
Hi Celia! What a divine post – it all had me drooling! I am especially keen to try your ricotta slice – it looks amazing!
The link to my IMK post for November is here http://apricottart.blogspot.com.au/2014/11/i-cant-believe-that-its-november.html
Marian, thank you! Hope all is well in glorious Coffin Bay! (I think of you every time I see the oysters!)
Things are looking so delicious in your kitchen – as always. Those marshmallows. Must have, so I looked up your tutorial (wow), and will attempt to make them. If I do manage a November In My Kitchen, I will be quick and send the link.
Fran, hope all is well! The marshmallows are great fun to make, but an extra set of hands really does help with them! :)
Oh, I am just sighing over your ricotta slice. It looks fantastic, as do all of your other treats as well. Love the egg tray…such bright splash of color. I just posted my Movember edition of IMK :)
I can’t wait to read it, Laila! I’m saving it up for a quiet moment with a cup of tea so I can see what the Tiger and Princess are up to! :)
I used to have one of those egg holders then I misplaced it. When we finally got chickens I went looking for it and it was nowhere to be found :( So I bought a new solution which I coincidentally wrote about in my IMK this month.
I am loving your marshmallow experiments. It spurs me on to add some new flavours to my repertoire. You have also reminded me I need to go scavenging for mulberries before the season ends. I want to make more ice cream.
I finally managed to do my IMK post this month.
http://thecookspyjamas.com/kitchen-november-2014/
Tania, mulberries really are a foraged food aren’t they! I’ve never seen them for sale in the shops!
Those tissue paper flowers are gorgeous and I’m salivating over that mulberry pie. I’m constantly ravenous at the moment and find myself jealous of your neighbours and these yummy food care packages!
Here’s my contribution: http://withafork.blogspot.com.au/2014/11/whats-in-my-kitchen-november-2014.html
Hahaha… I need to start making pregnancy care packages! :)
Celia, I have been dreaming about ricotta slice/baked cheesecake, and yours looks wonderful I will have to try!
I hope the boys got through the HSC relatively stress free.
What great neighbours you have, such a beautiful pie :)
cheers
Jason
Jason, you’d love the ricotta slice, it’s very easy. Secret is to really drain the ricotta well before you start!
[…] you’re nosy like me and want to peek in some other bloggers’ kitchens, pop over to Fig Jam and Lime Cordial and have a look […]
Yum! Lots of delicious goodies as usual Celia! I keep thinking about making marshmallows, and those look beautiful, I should give it a try. The Rochester Ginger looks very tasty – is it like Stones ginger wine without the alcohol?
I’ve put my post up – http://insearchofgoldenpudding.com/2014/11/07/in-my-kitchen-november-2014-2/
thanks as always for hosting
Beck
Beck, I’m not a huge fan of the Stones – the RG is a ginger flavoured drink. It’s quite sweet and I often have it with soda, or in hot water when I have a sore throat!
ok, so a sort of ginger cordial? Sounds yum, I’m a big ginger fan :)
Can be used as one, but my Pete drinks it straight on ice!
I love tissue paper flowers but alas I have the anti-Midas touch when it comes to crafts so I haven’t tried to make them yet. I saw similar flowers made from old t-shirts cut in to strips, beautiful! I just realises I submitted my In My Kitchen for November under your October blog entry! I’m very out of practice…
Faye, the flowers made from t-shirts sounds intriguing!
Hi Celia- Love the Mulberry pie- I’ve never made a pie out of them but it looks wonderful. I put up an IMK post this month!
Heidi hooray! Look forward to reading it!
You have the luckiest trick or treaters in the world! If I lived near you I’d certainly show up at your door in costumer (you’d know it was me – the old lady). Great idea with the little egg tray & of course you’re so lucky to have fresh eggs every day – what a treat.
Ricotta cake…oh my!
You’ve got such a creative gift & I know what you mean about some things being very calming. For me it’s sewing … unless I mess up & then it’s not very calming any more.
Diane, I used to sew obsessively and I loved it, but after a while I built up too much fabric and not enough willing wearers of homemade clothes.. :)
Oh I do hear you & I’ve made a serious (ok, maybe not as serious as it should be) attempt to go through my stacks of fabric (yes, I have an entire closet with shelves of fabric). Once my daughter stopped competitive figure skating though I ended up with way too much lycra.
Hello Celia…I am just scraping in with a November post, better late than never I guess.
I wonder if you got any Trick or Treaters…they would have been very lucky to receive those treats! That ricotta slice looks enormous and delicious. Those marshmallows look like edible pillows, yum. Those care packages…wow! Good old fashioned mulberry pie, that reminds me of my childhood.
Lovely post as usual! Thank you for hosting my kitchen.
Jane, I had 25 trick or treaters all arrive at the door AT THE SAME TIME. :) It was quite a sight! :D Look forward to popping in to visit with a cup of tea – bit hectic here at the moment, but I’ll get there, I promise! xxx

Another great month to see everyone’s kitchens – a couple of new foodies joining each month is great! May I ask where you got that egg holder from? I’ve seen one but it was quite expensive and I just love red! I think I must get one – I’m waiting for my eggs to roll & splat on the floor :) Love being part of this great party & beautiful community of foodies, thank you for hosting Celia. Hope you’re well x

Nicole, I bought it off the sale table at a local homewares store, but I don’t think they’re too hard to find. My sister in law found something similar in her country town! :) The one I bought was $10, and given how much we’ve used it, I think it’s a bargain! :)

your kitchen is looking very colourful as befits this time of year – with all the lovely spring produce – a neighbour with a mulberry tree sounds charming and I wish I could make such beautiful paper flowers – sounds like a fine activity for watching the telly. and it is always lovely that your generosity and sense of community comes through in these posts
I have posted my IMK post at http://gggiraffe.blogspot.com.au/2014/11/in-my-kitchen-november-2014.html

Hi Celia, I just put together a very quick IMK for November if you get a chance to add it to your list. As you can see, I don’t have a lot of interesting & pretty things in my kitchen this month, but there’s never a dull moment!
Diane, you KNOW how much I adore your posts! Can’t wait to read it! :)
Well Celia, this month is a short one with an even shorter movie featuring the Lola the mud dog.
Celia if I was a kid again I would hang around your doorway and pretend it was Halloween all month with those delectable sweet treats in your kitchen. The ricotta slice and the mulberry pie look so delicious. I have seen those paper flowers and they look so beautiful laid out on a table for occasions. Lovely to know that my post inspired you to buy your cute red egg holder :) :)
Celia, I made it just in time. Phew.

Giulia, I’ll add it for you, but PLEASE can I have it by the 10th next time? That’s our cut-off date. Otherwise it becomes impossible to manage…thank you..
Hello Celia, I need some help regarding a recipe from your page, I have ruined 3 chestnut flour brownies :-( Please can you help? The comments on the recipe are closed. I have just been diagnosed with celiac disease and I am desperate for gluten free goodies I could make for me and my family who are also gluten free. Will be grateful for your help. Thank you so much!
Sure! Are you using dark chocolate with a cacao % of between 50-60%? Any darker and the brownie will be oily. Also the batter needs to be beaten well until it lightens in colour and stiffens. If you’re having trouble doing that by hand, try using a handheld mixer for a couple of minutes instead. I use Italian chestnut flour in mine and it works well – not sure about local chestnut flours. Is there anything else I can try and answer for you on it?
