In My Kitchen, January 2015

January 1, 2015 by Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

This month’s IN MY KITCHEN is now closed!

Please join us again in February! ♥

. . . . .

Happy New Year!

In my kitchen…are gifts galore!

These beautiful lisianthus, Australian native flannel flowers and tea tree buds were a gift from my dear friend Emilie at The Clever Carrot. She knows that I’m a big fan of Little Flowers Sydney so when this posy appeared on their Instagram feed, she surprised me with a delivery…

In my kitchen…

…on my iPad…is the butterly gorgeous Kavey’s final Meet the Blogger post for 2014…

In my kitchen…

…are festive foodie gifts from my Canberra blogging buddies – homegrown garlic from Ali, a bouquet of fresh herbs from Becca…

…a decadent caramel pretzel creation from Fran…

…smoked rice from Becca and amazing smoked garlic from Lizzy. There was also a sublime Aldi fudge from Liz, but it was eaten before a photo could be taken! Lovely Linda sent me three blocks of her handmade soap – I use it every day…

In my kitchen…

…is a bowl of homemade cranberry sauce, which was absolutely perfect with our Christmas goose. The large jar was a generous gift from Charlie at Hotly Spiced…

In my kitchen…

…was my first attempt at a 100% remilled semolina sourdough loaf. It was moderately successful, even though the dough lacked a little elasticity and tore during the shaping process..

In my kitchen…

…are teenage mutant ninja trombies. I hope Chicago John is reading this – he’ll be pleased to see trombies back in our IMK posts. These grow into a slightly different shape each season, and this year’s self sown plant is particularly vigorous. It’s also delicious – we’ve been using them in place of zucchinis in stir fries…

In my kitchen…

…are treasured bottles of homemade booze, a gift from my mate Annie in Essex. After much deliberation and tasting, we’ve decided we like the sloe gin best…

Annie also sent me some of her jelly prints! I was almost more excited about those than the gin…

In my kitchen…

…is a cookie mix jar from Nagi. I made the cookies up on Boxing Day and the boys have demolished them…

In my kitchen…

…are jars of chilli jam and tomato relish from Liz at Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard. They’re both delicious – we tried them with lamb kebabs on Boxing Day…

In my kitchen…

…is a gorgeous book of origami paper from Dotti and a wooden spoon holder that Tandy sent me all the way from South Africa via her mother and sister! It has pride of place now on my kitchen bench and gets used daily…

In my kitchen…

…are limited edition Nespresso pods from Tiny Terri, Wendy’s homemade homegrown cucumber pickles, and boozy chocolate from Pete and El…

Finally, in my kitchen…

…is a kilo of Ian and Diana’s homegrown garlic. It’s such a good time of year in our kitchen when local garlic is in season!

. . . . .

Folks, some very sad news – lovely IMK blogger Kim from A Little Lunch lost her Oklahoma home to fire late November last year. She and her husband Russ are fine, they were insured, and Kim’s emails have been amazingly positive given the circumstances. She’ll hopefully be setting up a PayPal donation link on her blog soon and then anyone who wishes to help can do so.

I’ll let you know as soon as her post is up. In the meantime, please pop over to her blog and send her your well wishes, I’m sure she’d love to hear from you!

. . . . .

Tell me, what’s happening in your kitchen this month?

If you’d like to do an In My Kitchen post on your own blog, please feel free  to do so. We’d love to see what’s happening in your kitchen this month!  Please link back to this blog, and let us know when your post is up, and we’ll add it to our monthly listing. Please upload your post by the 10th of each month.

The flowers are so beautiful! A lovely bouquet. You have so many lovely “foodie” gifts. Love the trombies!
Wishing your family a Happy New Year!

    • on January 2, 2015 at 5:59 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Thanks Manuela! The trombies have gone bonkers! :) Happy New Year! x

Darling, I just read your article over at Kavey Eats. It’s fabulous! And that piece about you in the very beginning? Lovely. Really, your blog is more than just inconsistent ramblings- it’s a community. One that I’m so very proud to be a part of. :)

    Happy 2015! xoxo

    • on January 2, 2015 at 6:00 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

You are so nice, thank you for the lovely comments, both here and at Kavey’s. Thanks for being the only one who laughed at the koala in my coffee. Lots of love to you and your gorgeous boys and best wishes for a fabulous 2015! xxx

  3. on January 1, 2015 at 12:53 am Judy @Savoring Today

Happy New Year, Celia! You are right, your kitchen is filled with the most wonderful of gifts! So sorry to hear about Kim and their home, it’s devastating. We have several friends who lost their homes last year in the Black Forest Fire and the rebuilding process is long and slow, often grievous process.

May the coming year bring you and yours abundant blessing and profound joy. <3

    • on January 2, 2015 at 6:01 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Judy, yes, such sad news – I didn’t hear about it until a month or so after it happened. She sounds amazingly positive, a testament both to her resilience and her faith. All the very best for 2015 to you and your family! xxx

  4. on January 1, 2015 at 1:16 am sallybr

Celia! HAPPY NEW YEAR, my dear! I just knew you would come up with a fantastic collection of stuff this month, and gifts would be a big part of it, since you are lovable, adorable, inspirational, and if I had to give you one criticism… TOO MODEST ;-)

Looking forward to one more year in your virtual company, since so far Australia has been too far of my travels, but maybe one day.

    • on January 2, 2015 at 6:03 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Thank you lovely Sally, and a very Happy New Year to you and the Handsome Stud as well! I hope you have a kitchen full of edible treats as well this month! :)

  5. on January 1, 2015 at 1:37 am shaheen

Firstly Happy New Year to you, its still 3.30pm and New Years Eve in Wales, UK so waiting for the late hours to celebrate the New Year.
You have so many gifted marvellous things in your kitchen. I am loving the caramael pretzels, I am not a huge fan of them, but coated in sweet stuff. Yum.
I will be back later in the week to share my January IMK post.

    • on January 2, 2015 at 6:03 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Shaheen, look forward to it and so glad to hear you received the starter! Fran’s pretzels were delicious, salty and sweet all at the same time! :)

      • on January 4, 2015 at 10:31 pm shaheen

        Hi Celia,
As promised here is the link to my IMK post http://allotment2kitchen.blogspot.co.uk/2015/01/early-january-in-my-kitchen.html
Its includes Sourdough Starter Priscilla. I have used the image from your blog, I hope that is okay, my photograph would not have done it justice.

  6. on January 1, 2015 at 1:58 am emmabarrett1508

Those flowers are so stunning. That home grown garlic looks amazing. You can not beat home made cranberry sauce. The stuff out the jar from the supermarket doesn’t even come close.

Thank you so much for starting IMK. I have had so much fun this year peeking into everyones kitchens and getting to know other bloggers better.

We wish you and your family a very happy and restful New Year. Love Emma, Ross and Miles the cat xx

    • on January 2, 2015 at 6:05 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Emma, Happy New Year to you, Ross and Miles too! I’m so glad you’ve enjoyed being part of the IMK community – such wonderful bloggers in it! I have to try Charlie’s sauce recipe – it was seriously good!

  7. on January 1, 2015 at 3:17 am Emma

Happy new year Celia. Great to see so much gorgeous homemade food makes me jealous! My kitchen is already inundated with food from the garden and orchard so I am flat out preserving it. Roasted pasatta, berry jams and cordials, cherry berry syrup, poached plums, and rhubarb and plum fruit leather which is a new recipe that will definitely become a standard. And of course sourdough, which is getting better every day. Even my husband made a loaf yesterday.

    • on January 2, 2015 at 6:06 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Emma, sounds like Miss Smilla’s been a huge hit! How fabulous that your hubby made a loaf too – I don’t know how you’re managing everything with a new bub! Good for you! :) Have a glorious 2015!

  8. on January 1, 2015 at 6:25 am MamaD1xx4xy

Happy New Year! What a wonderful month in your kitchen. So many delicious looking gifts. This is when I get jealous of everyone in the Southern Hemisphere, you all enjoy your fresh produce and gardens while we don’t grow much right now. Those flowers are gorgeous too, I can’t wait for spring here, I miss my garden!

    • on January 2, 2015 at 6:07 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Gretchen, Happy New Year to you and your lovely boys! Here’s the deal – we’ll keep you in green photos now, and you can do the same for us when it’s our winter! :)

      • on January 3, 2015 at 6:31 am MamaD1xx4xy

That sounds fair enough! Just got my post up too. http://feedingmy3sons.com/2015/01/02/in-my-kitchen-january-2015/#more-1436

Happy New Year lovely! This will be a glorious one for you in your new house – can’t wait to see your new kitchen! :)

  10. on January 1, 2015 at 6:42 am Francesca

So many wonderful gifts. I read the interview in kavey eats and yes, that sounds very much like the Celia I have got to know over the last year. I’m peeping around the corner into my Kitchen and only seeing a big pile of mess. Will I be able to shape up to an IMK post? Happy New year Celia, Pete and the boys/young men now.

    • on January 2, 2015 at 6:09 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Francesca, a veritable treasure chest, I was feeling very blessed! Isn’t Kavey gorgeous? We have the most bizarre discussions on twitter ever. :) I’m sure your kitchen is full of treats at this time of year! Have a glorious 2015! xxx

  11. on January 1, 2015 at 7:10 am Debra Kolkka

Happy New Year! Not much is happening in my kitchen this month, it is just too hot. It has started raining right now, hopefully it will cool things down a little.

    • on January 2, 2015 at 6:10 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Happy 2015 lovely Deb! It was hot here yesterday too, so I’m sure it was probably scorching up there.. xxx

  12. on January 1, 2015 at 8:00 am hotlyspiced

That’s so sad about Kim’s home. I follow her blog but somehow I didn’t know about the tragedy of her house. You have certainly received some fantastic gifts. I love the sound of the homemade booze and soap. Good to see the teenage mutants are back! Happy New Year to you, Pete and the boys xx

    • on January 2, 2015 at 6:11 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Happy New Year hon! May it be a grand one for all the Hotly Spiceds! :) xxx

  13. on January 1, 2015 at 8:24 am lizzygoodthings

Hi darling, happy new year to you, Pete and the boys. Loved reading the article on KaveyEats… must dip in and read it all again! Is it really January already? My goodness… an indication of how quickly this year will fly by too! Made all the better by you and the wonderful community of friends in food you have grown (like a trombocino). Much love. xox

    • on January 2, 2015 at 6:11 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Lizzy, don’t we have such a wonderful group here! It was so nice to catch up with you all – thank you for making the time for us. Wishing you and Pete a glorious 2015!

Happy New Year darling Amanda! Thanks for being such a lovely friend! xxx

  16. on January 1, 2015 at 8:40 am fergie51

With trepidation I opened the IMK post as I knew it would be filled with not only beautiful things but joy! You are one lucky lady Celia! My heart goes out to any victims of fire, we have seen many and been way too close for comfort during some horrendous bush fires. It is amazing how people and the environment recover with energy and abundance over time. Better get out of bed and think about what to include in this months IMK post. Happy New Year!

    • on January 2, 2015 at 6:13 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Maree, look forward to reading your post! Happy New Year to you all!

  17. on January 1, 2015 at 8:43 am Jan

Happy New Year Celia. I just love the flowers, they must make your heart happy to look at them and I love the jug beside them. Such a round up of treasures you have in your kitchen – the blogging community is beautiful. Life in Brisbane feels very sluggish – hot, humid and generally jumbled up – but going back over your post is pure pleasure.

    • on January 2, 2015 at 6:14 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Happy New Year darling Jan, Peter and Princess Patsy! :) You’d be interested in the flannel flowers – apparently they’re brand new to the Aus cut flower market! They’re very beautiful – I wish I’d taken a better photo of them. It was scorching hot here yesterday, but a cool change today – hope one is on its way to you too.. xxx

  18. on January 1, 2015 at 8:58 am Craig

Happy New Year Celia, and Pete and the boys…

    • on January 2, 2015 at 6:15 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Happy New Year dear man! Seeing you in November was one of our highlights of the year! :)

  19. on January 1, 2015 at 9:29 am theintolerantchef

I’m not surprised your kitchen is full of presents Celia, you bring so much joy to others that of course we want to give back in just a small way and show how much we love and appreciate you xox
Happy New Year sweetie, I hope it’s full of fabulous fun, food, family and friends xox

  20. on January 1, 2015 at 9:53 am Rose

Good morning Celia and Happy New Year to you my sweet, to Pete and the boys.

I just read your interview over at Kavey’s “I eventually found the perfect substitute by Chasseur – and bought six of them. As one does.” Lol!

    • on January 2, 2015 at 6:17 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Lovely Rose, do you know that we’re still using all those gorgeous dish cloths you made for us? They work a treat and I hope you hear my whisper of thanks whenever I use them! :) Wishing you and Tony a wonderful New Year! xxx

Always enjoy your posts Celia! I bought myself a New Year gift for my kitchen, a Römentopf! I had one years ago, a gift from a German friend, it eventually cracked, (I didn’t know you had to put it into a cold oven). Can wait to try out some of your suggestions! Happy New Year! X

Happy New Year Celia :) Your kitchen is full of delights this month (well, and all months) – that caramel pretzel concoction is rather amazing and your flowers are beautiful.

I have just done my January IMK post, at http://www.bitesizedthoughts.com/2015/01/in-my-kitchen-january-2015.html

  41. on January 2, 2015 at 3:43 am narf77

A lovely post Celia and weren’t you a lucky girl! :) I am sorry to hear about that fire. It is such a devastating thing to lose everything to fire and here in Australia we are well aware of how close we are to natures furnace right through summer. I adore that bunch of flowers by the way. What mixed gorgeousness :). I have containers of beer bottle caps with holes in them and flattened beer bottle caps in my kitchen. They are going to be turned into a beer bottle cap light shade and bunting for Stevie-boys music room. I have been collecting them for over a year for this purpose. I also have a new drop spindle that Steve made me so that I can learn to spin the 2 big garbage bags of alpaca wool that my son and his partner dropped off a few days ago. My zukes went feral and I am admiring your trombs to the max. New garden beds and lots of garden work are on the cards and the closest that I got to anything clever in the kitchen was my invention of the “legless frog” cocktail that rendered me sufficiently rubber kneed and croaky. Here’s to a communal mass conglomeration of blogging happiness and mutual sharing and uplifting this year Ms Celia :)

    • on January 2, 2015 at 6:33 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

A beer cap light shade! Maybe you can use any leftovers to make a lagerphone – seems appropriate for the music room! :) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monkey_stick I’m almost too scared to ask what was in your cocktail.. :) Happy New Year lovely Fran! xxx

      • on January 2, 2015 at 1:07 pm narf77

All I can say is that no frogs were harmed in the making of my Christmas and New Years cocktails (unless they were hibernating inside my raspberries then I would have to put my hand up to that ;) ) I thought about a lagerphone but then associated it immediately with Rolf Harris and shied away from the idea. The bunting needs a LOT of beer bottle caps and I think I will be hounding Steve to go and buy longnecks for quite some time to come ;). Happy New Year right back atcha Ms Celia :)

Happy Brand New Year, my friend! Such bounty in your kitchen. I’m inspired! Lots of good things going on around here. I’m hoping to get a “In my Kitchen” Post up soon. My lovely hub gave me a Le Creuset braiser for Xmas, cherry red and it is a thing of beauty. I also received Julia Child’s “Art of French Cooking” Wish me luck there. Warm hugs, Maz. :-)

    • on January 2, 2015 at 6:31 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Happy New Year, Maz! I’d LOVE to peek into your kitchen – that braiser sounds gorgeous! All the best to you and your mencats for a fabulous 2015!

  43. on January 2, 2015 at 5:37 am Jo

Wishing you and your menfolk a wonderful year in 2015 Celia. What a wonderful bounty you have. Love the packaging for the garlic and really enjoyed the Q &A with Kavey. I have enormous zucchini taking over here, every time it rains they seem to grow overnight.

    • on January 2, 2015 at 6:30 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Jo, Happy New Year! The trombies have gone mental in the garden – luckily they’re particularly tasty this year! :)

  44. on January 2, 2015 at 8:18 am Elizabeth

Happy New Year Celia, what a delicious kitchen you have this month, I’m glad you like the chilli jam and tomato relish, they are my favourite. Everything looks so yummy, I’m not sure what to comment on. I am so sad to hear about Kim…. I love her blog and did wonder what was happening… I’m glad to hear that everyone is doing ok! Thank you for letting us know! Liz xx

Congratulations on your wonderful Meet the Blogger post! And what an array of gifts and goodies! I must admit to wondering just how big your pantry must be! My heart goes out to Kim at A Little Lunch – I trust that new beginnings in 2015 will see better things to come.

  46. on January 2, 2015 at 1:19 pm Tania @ The Cook's Pyjamas

Happy New Year to you Celia. Oh my word you have some amazing things in your kitchen. It is wonderful to receive handmade gifts isn’t it. Our trombie is just starting to produce. I have been picking the unfertilised ones for pasta but I did manage a little bit of zucchini hanky-panky recently so here’s hoping for a bigger one soon. Love all the fresh garlic you have too.

    • on January 2, 2015 at 8:41 pm Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Tania, the trombies are so prolific – sometimes. Our first ones took ages to really establish, but this mutant one we’re growing this year is completely mental! :) Hope you’re having a fabulous 2015!

  47. on January 2, 2015 at 1:27 pm Jane @ Shady Baker

Hello Celia, Happy New Year to you my friend. So many delicious foodie gifts in your kitchen. Aren’t we lucky to have received Slamseys drinks and jelly prints, very special indeed.

Trombies are back in your garden, how funny. I have not planted them this year, I was too scared! But, now I am almost wishing I had.

My post is linked, thank you once again for coordinating our kitchens. All the very best for 2015 and happy cooking x

    • on January 2, 2015 at 8:43 pm Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Hooray for Annie! Isn’t she just the best? I was so excited when the parcel came! You don’t wish you’d planted trombies hon – remember Pete and his “we have descended into tromboncino hell” comment? :) We’ve only got the one mutant that grew on its own, and it’s producing fruit the size of newborn babies! Hahaha

Lisa, thank you! Happy New Year to you all as well! Your sourdough starter Lorenzo is looking amazingly healthy! I’m sure your first loaves are looking fabulous! You might find the overnight sourdough recipe useful – it takes very little time, and I’m sure you’re very busy with bubba! Hope you’re getting some sleep! :)

My goodness Celia! Why am I not surprised that this month’s kitchen is bursting at the seams? So many incredible, fun, and creative things from all over the world – you are truly loved.
I just love the name ‘flannel flowers’ for some reason it strikes me & they are gorgeous. And how about what’s under Kavey Eats? Not just you but the subheading “the belly rules the mind” – love that.
Your trombies keep getting more and more interesting as they mutate so please keep posting your latest specimens.
ahem… I hope you put the Slamsey’s booze through a very thorough test! A teeny sip wouldn’t be good enough to base your vote.
Being behind in reading my posts, i didn’t realize what had happened to Kim’s home. I am so sorry to hear about that and it looks as though the house was completely demolished! She has had a rough year but she does have a very positive attitude. I will have to check in to see what is happened.
I have just finished my first 2015 IMK post (your ‘not so great looking’ sourbread in this post looks better than my first effort but practice makes perfect as they say.

Happy New Year Celia. What a wonderful array of delicious gifts. I don’t think I’ve ever seen trombies before so we definitely be on the look out for them now. I’ve just posted an IMK for January. Thank you so much for hosting.

What a wonderful array of edible gifts Celia, it’s lovely trying clever thing people have made or grown or found! I also love your trombies, my parents grow them too and they have such a great firm texture for stir frying. As I love gin and make lots of marmalade I love the sound of that combination – I’ll have to look for recipes on Anne’s site. And my IMK post is now up finally – http://insearchofgoldenpudding.com/2015/01/08/in-my-kitchen-january-2015/
thanks for the tour of your lovely kitchen as always :)

Celia. Hi and Happy New Year to you and lovely family, I know I have not dropped by your blog for a while, so it is good to catch up on your recent posts. I just want to tell you I absolutely loooove those russian glasses. I love their size, look, I can almost feel the texture- i went to the link you placed but could not find the telephone number of the place. I wonder if they would deliver or send to the UAE. I shall try and google them now!

    • on January 10, 2015 at 5:41 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Lara, Happy New Year! :) I don’t think Harkola will ship to the UAE – they’re just a local wholesaler/Lebanese supermarket. It would be prohibitively expensive too – the glasses are pretty cheap, but the postage from here is crazy. I believe glasses like this were very common – Pat told me they were used in a little silver holder – you might be able to find something similar on ebay. If you get REALLY desperate, email me and I’ll send some to you and we can sort something out. :)

      • on January 11, 2015 at 1:28 am chocolates1974

Celia I would so love to get them from you. What would work out is if you gave me your bank account and sent you the money including postage of crouse. I really love them! I think i have a thing for old fashioned small glasses- either for wine, coffee like you did or simply tea. Please think about it and let me know. How many are you able to send? I hope they wont run out?

[…] It’s once again time for In My Kitchen and as per usual this is a collection of things from the past month — as seen over on Instagram — in loosely interpreted categories and no particular order, although full of holiday cheer. As always I’m linking up with Celia for IMK. […]
