In My Kitchen, October 2015

October 1, 2015 by Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

This month’s IN MY KITCHEN is now closed!

Please join us again in November! ♥

In my kitchen…

…there are mooncakes! Handmade by Monkey Girl’s clever mum, they’re filled with lotus paste and a salted duck yolk. They’re the best I’ve ever tasted…

In my kitchen…

…is a set of Oxo pop top airtight containers. They work brilliantly! I bought them from Costco at a fraction of what it would have cost to buy each piece individually…

In my kitchen…

…are oodles of chocolate chip cookies. Small Man’s HSC exams start in less than two weeks, so I’m keeping the cookie jars full…

In my kitchen…

…are these stunning ranunculas, a gift from my cousin Gek…

In my kitchen…

…was a packet of Jamon Iberico. I found it hidden on the bottom shelf of the fridge, and the boys scoffed it for lunch with sourdough focaccia…

In my kitchen…

…is a shirt button. Who else but my Pete would bother to repair a broken button?

In my kitchen…

…is this beautiful Japanese bowl and plate that Mum bought 30 years ago at a David Jones sale. She gave it to me as a gift on my last visit home…

She also gave me these old Chinese snuff bottles, which are handpainted from the inside…

In my kitchen…

…is a gold Japanese cup and saucer, a wedding present from 1989. I figured it was probably time to get it out and use it…

And speaking of vintage crockery, here’s my latest purchase from the Valentina Jones’ pendant collection. Gorgeous foodie jewellery made by a gorgeous friend…

In my kitchen…

…was a jar of Fiona’s apple scrap jelly. It was delicious on ham sandwiches….

In my kitchen…

…there is always chocolate. I’ve been making large dark chocolate plates with my ma’moul moulds…

…and more small chocolate coins. Pete punched a hole in one of them and turned it into a pendant for Valentina…

Finally, in my kitchen…

…is a birthday present for Tiny Terri – her favourite chestnut flour brownies and a selection of dark chocolates…

. . . . .

Tell me, what’s happening in your kitchen this month?

If you’d like to do an In My Kitchen post on your own blog, please feel free  to do so. We’d love to see what’s happening in your kitchen this month!  Please link back to this blog, and let us know when your post is up, and we’ll add it to our monthly listing. Honestly – so many wonderful things in your kitchen (I love, love, love ranunculas – or however you spell it!). And it’s already tomorrow for you while here in Spain it’s still today ;) That wedding gift cup is so lovely, you must use it and enjoy it. And I had to chuckle over your Pete mending the button. We are in Spain and the last few days supposedly going through cupboards and paperwork to chuck stuff away. Big Man’s pile of “things we can recycle/mend/reuse” is way bigger than the “send to the recyclying/charity shop/in or burn” pile!

Holy guacamole! Painted from the inside! It’s almost beyond comprehension.

  3. on October 1, 2015 at 12:28 am @ChristineSalins (FoodWineTravel)

I have a very similar Chinese snuff bottle, Celia. They’re beautiful, aren’t they?

  4. on October 1, 2015 at 12:30 am thecompletebook

Celia, I always love scrolling through your wonderful instalments, there is always so much love in your kitchen. I absolutely love the bowl and plate your mom gave you – what a treasured gift.
I have my brother and his family visiting so not much time has been spent behind the computer – I will try and get an IMK post out asap.
    Have a beautiful day.
    :-) Mandy xo

Oh dear, I’m going to ruin my record for this year as the one thing NOT in my kitchen this month is me!
I’m a blue & white girl from way back so I do love your bowl and plate.

  6. on October 1, 2015 at 12:46 am Manuela

Everything in here is beautiful. From the moon cakes to the flowers, crockery, chocolates. That’s a lot of cookies. I should make cookies again and fill up the cookie jars. They make handy snacks. Your snuff bottles look amazing. I am so envious of your chocolate! The mended button reminds me of someone I know as well. Lol Enjoy the new month!

  7. on October 1, 2015 at 1:35 am sallybr

All fantastically gorgeous this month, Celia! Loved the cups, the bottles painted from the inside, I cannot imagine the skill!

I won’t be joining the party this month, maybe November I can pull one post… (fingers crossed)

  8. on October 1, 2015 at 2:18 am Elaine @ foodbod

So much to look at! I love the snuff bottles and the patterns from the ma’moul moulds, you knew I would!!! Happy October honey xxx

  9. on October 1, 2015 at 2:19 am Liz @ spades, spatulas, and spoons

Wonderful collection! How did they paint those bottles from the inside? Love the blue China, and I am overdue for a visit to Costco. One more thing to add to the list. Wish mine would be full of cookies though.

  10. on October 1, 2015 at 2:34 am niasunset

wow! They are all so beautiful dear Celia, but especially your Japanese bowl and bottles fascinated me. Thank you, have a nice month :) Love, nia

  11. on October 1, 2015 at 4:07 am Debra Kolkka

In my kitchen is quince paste. I made it from quince collected from a friend’s tree. Mine has just 2 quince.

  12. on October 1, 2015 at 5:14 am marilynscottwaters

I love that you are getting out your wedding gifts to use. We’ve been all about the fruits and vegetables around here… last of the summer peaches and tomatoes. I finally found a crockpot that I like. Twelve bucks at Target. :-) Cook on! Maz

  13. on October 1, 2015 at 6:56 am EllaDee

Your posts, but especially IMK, I love because they expound what I truly believe, that while we can search for inspiration and amusements endlessly & externally, the simple pleasures find us… in ourselves, where & how we live :)

Lovely gift from your mother. Time to use the lovely things you have.

  16. on October 1, 2015 at 8:39 am Liz - Good Things

Hello lovely… so many good things in your kitchen (apart from you and the family, that is). Love it all! Yes, yes, yes, use the treasures you’ve tucked away, instead of saving them… and how beautiful are those chocolates from your moulds.

  18. on October 1, 2015 at 9:36 am hotlyspiced

Another month already! It will be Christmas before we know it. Those new containers will be very handy – I need some new containers myself. I’ve never heard of ‘scrap’ jelly but it looks good. I think we must have been given some similar wedding presents! Best wishes to Small Man for the HSC and I’d love to hear if he’s able to get through all those cookies! I hope your mum is doing okay xx

Fascinated by the Chinese snuff bottles, how do they do that? Ranunculas (??) always make me feel happy, I just love the colours. I’m a firm believer in using precious objects too, it greatly enhances the pleasure they give. My IMK contribution will be ready tonight. It’s good to be back..

Celia it’s never boring in your kitchen!! As I was scrolling I was thinking… Here comes the chocolate… Anytime now… Ah yes! And there it is! But I’d have to admit my favourite read was the gold Japanese cup & saucer! I love drinking out of cups like that!

  26. on October 1, 2015 at 7:10 pm tiffinbitesized

Well who doesn’t love a homemade anything, let alone the bets Mooncake you’ve ever tasted?! As for the snuff bottles…I can’t imagine the patience involved. Actually, I can. We loved out chocolate gift though I am rationing the ginger so we truly enjoy it. Cheers!

  27. on October 1, 2015 at 7:57 pm Jennifer @Milk and Honey

Mooncakes, how divine. That ham and focaccia would last long with my boys either. My youngest is having a growth spurt and I can’t fill him up! I’m a little bit in love with Japanese ceramics and your bowl and plate set a so lovely. You’ve always got such interesting and delicious goodies.

Here’s my IMK post. Thanks Celia.

I have always love blue and white China so I love your plate and bowl. Painted from the inside, how fascinating. So much love in your kitchen as always. We’re getting ready to stock up on all things pumpkin. Perfect for the boys since they love the cinnamon and nutmeg that goes along with it.

Hi Celia! Great looking food storage containers from OXO! I find it quite satisfying ‘decanting’ foods into containers. It makes the pantry look so much neater. I’m sure Small Man will devour those delicious looking cookies, and best of luck to him come exam time.
My post is finally up, after me having a little unplanned hiatus from IMK for a while :)
    Cheers, Kirsty

I feel I will spend some time pondering the painting of those chinese snuff bottles from the inside – how amazing are the artists! Those chocolate pendants are pretty enough to be worn around the neck! Best wishes to Small Man for his exams – though I am sure the choc chip cookies will get him through. Love all the vintage crockery and am sure if any of it breaks Pete will put it back together – if even a broken button must be fixed :-)

I’ve never tried a mooncake but they certainly look delicious. Aren’t you the smart Mum to keep the cookie supply ready for exam time – I’m guessing Small Man appreciates that.

You always have such lovely things to show but I’m really taken by that Japanese bowl & the snuff bottles – such treasures!

Now Pete just cracks me up -repairing a button. If you ever need to match one though just send me a picture because I have a huge button box that I inherited from my mother & I swear I must have every button ever made.

Believe it or not, I’ve got an IMK post myself this month & hope to get back in the groove with posting again now that I’m a little more rested and caught up on things here. As always, thank you for keeping the iMK going…

I will be looking for those little beauties for my sisters garden. I just adore your mum’s (now yours) Japanese bowl & plate. Your Japanese cup & saucer is stunning too – everything from the 80’s & 90’s is becoming fashionable again so use your originals proudly :) Lovely seeing you again Celia & thank you for a great party – love everyone’s kitchen goodies! x

Your kitchen is a well-loved place…I can tell from every post old and new and your blog is a wonderful resource. It is a trusty resource when it comes to chocolate and sourdough and many other treats. I have never had mooncakes, but would love to try them someday. Thanks for sharing. Here is my post on friendship and gifts from friends in my kitchen <3

The snuff bottles are incredible knowing that they were painted from the inside. Love the chocolate pendent. A bite nearby whenever the urge for chocolate arrives…although I think I’d be wearing a chocolate shirt from the heat melting it. :D

I missed this month as I was too focused on my hooking!! Damn!! Nevermind, always next month….lots of wonderful things here Celia, good luck to your boy with his exams – you are a bloody great woman keeping them fed so well. I’ve got a bag of apple cores in the freezer to make Fiona’s jelly. Just adore those chocolate moulds – heartbreakingly beautiful!! Jan x
