Solvitur ambulando – “it is solved by walking”
. . . . .
It’s my walkaversary!
I started recording my daily steps on my phone on the 14th August 2016, with the aim of walking at least 8,000 per day. It’s now a year later and I haven’t missed a single day.
It’s swings and roundabouts, of course – my absolute minimum on any given day is 5,000 steps (which I only allow myself if I’m sick or the weather is particularly inclement) but on most days, I’ll manage more than 8,000.
Here are my stats for the year – 3,366,509 steps walked and 1,953km covered. That’s a daily average of 9,223 steps and 5.35km per day…
Big Boy still walks with me about four mornings out of seven.
We don’t walk fast – the process is meditative as much as physical – and I don’t want to mess up my stats by incurring an injury (yes, I know that makes me sound like an old woman). We are incredibly blessed to be able to stroll by the sea every morning, often in time to watch the sunrise…
. . . . .
There is almost always a light show on display…
. . . . .
Our walking route takes us along the Iron Cove Bay Run…
…and then back to Hawthorne Canal and the Greenway…
. . . . .
On weekends, I’ll often walk in the city – starting at one end and working my way down to the Harbour. There’s always so much to see…
. . . . .
To celebrate my walkaversary, I went for an extra long walk to Birkenhead Point with my friend Carol, where I bought myself a new pair of Merrell walking shoes…
Do you go for daily walks? I’d love to know where your steps take you – hopefully you enjoy them as much as I do!Β β₯
Hi Celia, I love your blog, I have made your overnight sourdough and it was amazing, Maree Tink used it as the banner for her FB group. But, back to walking. I am lucky enough to live in Tasmania and there are so many beautiful walks. I have some health issues which means there are some days that I can’t walk. I do try to walk at least 5 days a week, with my husband and our dogs. Morris and Myna, Morris is a little bitza from the pound, and Myna is a labradoodle. Apart from their wonderful company at home, they encourage us to get up and get out and walk every day.
We often walk along the banks of the river Derwent, as well as walks on the beautiful Mt Wellington. We are lucky to have so many lovely walks within 10-15 min drive from our home.
So, congratulations on your walkaversary, that is quite an achievement.
Wow Celia – fantastic effort and so enjoyable at the same time – Sydney is such a beautiful city. I live in Adelaide and walk along the river (also very beautiful). I would love to say that I do it regularly because I don’t but I am taking inspiration from you and will start with 2 days a week and increase from there. x
Wonderful Celia. Kudos on your tenacity and enthusiasm with your daily works. Not even one day off is incredible!
Have a happy day.
:-) Mandy xo
Thanks for taking us on your walks with you (and lucky me for even bumping into you sometimes!). x
Great effort Celia! I love walking our dog Penny most days, however our little suburb isn’t quite as sparkling & beautiful as yours, weekends are when we drive to other beautiful areas of Sydney and go for BIG walks.
Keep up the walking, I think it’s beautiful that your son walks with you.
It’s an amazing achievement! Even on rainy days or when you’ve been sick. Wonderful π
Solvitur Ambulando – that’s a beautiful expression. I should love to walk some part of the Camino for that reason, but, in the meantime – i walk the streets and hills of our town and part of that takes me along by the Bay. Walking down to the Bay on clear, crisp mornings and seeing the glittering path of the sun on the water with it’s beautiful sky and cloudscape makes me feel very fortunate. I have a watch which measures my steps in time as well as my heartbeats but it doesn’t measure my thoughts or the things i see – i don’t think smart technology will really be smart enough to be in time with us. I love your new shoes and long may they keep pace with your thoughts on your beautiful walking paths. Happy walkaversary, Celia.
Wonderful and uplifting!! Enjoy seeing your photographs of the fabulous Bay. You are a role model.
Excellent!!! Well done ππ»ππ» I hope you feel good for all of our steps!
Bob and I walk between 6-8km every morning, and I love it. I love being outside and surrounded by the beautiful nature around us, and I love the meditative and health benefits ππ happy walking!
congrats! i never forget when you did that rowing marathon effort! It is so YOU to stick with it for a full year, and more…
wonderful! Great to live in a place where the weather also helps, here it would be impossible in the winter, or for a few days each winter
Good morning from Texas USA, I just returned from my walk with our two goof ball dog who happened to be Australian shepherds. I too love the morning walks it’s so peaceful it gets my days going even when I’m not feeling so great. I love your pictures of your walks there beautiful. My walk is not as interesting. But you know how it is you have to find the beauty in everything to have calm and peace. Have a great day!

Celia, congratulations on your walking record and new pair of shoes to celebrate! I also loved your “light show” and seascape/cityscape photos. Life is grand when viewed through observant eyes, and a blessing when shared with others. Thank you! I’ve been meaning to implement a daily walk for the past three years (during which it was a triumph to walk to the mailbox and back, provided I was home long enough!) — I’m looking forward to making good on my intentions now that I’m finally feeling settled in again. Walking is restorative, and as you said, contemplative. Here’s to many more cumulative kilometers! xo
congratulations!! Love your new shoes, they always make such a difference. Keep it up………
Quite a habit you have developed. Walking at least 5,000 steps every day for a year. Your new shoes are great too. I have a fitbit and try to get 10,000 steps at least 5 days a week–it is hit or miss. I find that I can get easy steps by using an exercise bike, for those days I can’t make it outside. Your photos are lovely. The motto is an inspiration in and of itself. Keep on trekkin.
I love that quote at the start of your post, Celia. So very true! I walk our dog everyday around our quiet, leafy neighbourhood but I also do several very long walks every week. I usually go on or near the beach and I love it. Meg:)
An amazing achievement! The new walking shoes look very comfortable.
Well done Celia, love that you have walked even when the weather is bad or you are feeling ill. Inspiration for us all.
Love your enthusiasm Celia and all the wonderful blogs you share. They’re a most welcome break in an endless sea of media/bills etc. and remind me constantly of the value in kind gestures, good food shared with friends and neighbours and enjoying time with our families. Happy Anniversary!
A magnificent achievement Celia! I’m about to start walking further to strengthen my ankle after the sprain. It would be wonderful to follow your example. Maybe next year I can claim this…
Love this! I wish this was one of my accomplishments but my arthritis makes walking a no-no. On the other hand, my husband is the walking man. I have nicknamed him “Free Range Brian” because he is always walking/pacing somewhere. His employees once called him a caged tiger and then bought him a pedometer (way before fitbits) and he clocked an average of 11 miles everyday just in his office. Luckily we manage to complement each other in many other ways. We are celebrating our 35th anniversary in a month. Congratulations on your walking anniversary – and I love that quote!
Congrats for your year of walks. I try and get out everyday, doesn’t always happen, but, it makes me feel so much better when l do. I’m aiming for 10,000 steps a day from Sept. 1. Walking truely is one of life’s joys.
