In My Kitchen

February 17, 2010 by Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

In my kitchen…

…I have five paper cranes, that Maude’s eldest daughter made for me. We strung them up so that they could fly…

In my kitchen…

…are these gorgeous washing up gloves, a gift from my dear neighbour June.  I told her I’d wear them to my next black tie function.  Luckily, I’m never invited to any…

In my kitchen…

…are seven jars of Pete’s latest jam – pluot, plum and boysenberry.  We were both surprised by how well the flavours blended together.  I should put them away, but their luminescent red glow makes me happy…

In my kitchen…

…is this beautiful handpainted Turkish bowl that I bought from Metin at the Orange Grove Markets.  He has a stall there on the first and second Saturdays of every month (tel. 0413 638 591 or email: aydinmetin@yahoo.com).

This little bowl is painted with a traditional carnation design, and filled with microwaved potato chips, made per the Spice Girl’s instructions. Don’t ask how many we’ve eaten today…

No matter how stressful life gets, there’s always something in my kitchen that will put a smile on my face.

So tell me…what’s brightening up your world today?

Oz, I love chatting with you – you always make me feel better! Hope! Yes, that makes me smile too. :)

And I love the bowl…the gloves and the cranes….as for the jam, I’ll make good on visiting some day soon!

    In my kitchen

    – 9 jars of organic seville orange marmalade, and a man with a thumb with six butterfly stitches in it, he was washing up after marmalading and had a slight accident, the expression ‘fountain of blood’ comes to mind – the price one pays for home preserves eh?

    – Two large bowls full of something that looks like porridge with bird food in it – on its way to being turned into salzsauer roggenbrot – special request

    – a lot of washing up – which is why I am up here in front of the computer avoiding it :)

and tomorrow there will be microwave potato crisps OH YES how very exciting!!!!

Aaaah, I hope he’s ok, Jo. Nasty stuff, although I’d bet the preserves were almost worth the pain! I’m sure the roggenbrot (aka rye bread) will be delicious!

Hehe love those gloves! :o Can you really wash up with them?

    • on February 17, 2010 at 2:18 pm figjamandlimecordial

Aren’t they just wild? June told me she bought them in Cooma. And yes, you can wash up in them, they’re just like regular squeaky dishwashing gloves, but with some serious bling! I did the dishes last night humming Bollywood tunes…:)

    Hi Aunty Celia,

I am now up to my 27th crane. Thank you for the silver paper, I am now making number 28. 972 to go.

    • on February 17, 2010 at 7:43 pm figjamandlimecordial

You go, darling girl! Thank you for my cranes, they make me very happy! :)

      Bling bling!

I’m a ‘Hurry up’ which is why I didn’t know they were washing up gloves. How cool is that! Or that those chips read…microwave…., please don’t open up a world of endless possibilities for me….PLEASEEEEEEEE

    • on February 18, 2010 at 7:57 am figjamandlimecordial

      Ozoz, that’s almost exactly what I said on SG’s blog..hahaha. “Nooooo…..please don’t tell me about this…”

We actually made them on a sheet of parchment, straight on the microwave turntable, and they didn’t need turning. But watch them carefully, as they can go from no colour to burnt in a matter of seconds. We pulled the cooked sheet out onto the pizza peel – no burnt fingers!

Oh what lovely cranes. The washing up gloves I thought were a joke until I peered a bit more closely. In my kitchen, I have a rather forlorn pan waiting patiently for it’s 3rd scrub after burning last night’s dinner! On a more positive note, like you I have jars of medlar jelly that look so pretty I can’t bear to put them in the cupboard.

    • on February 18, 2010 at 7:54 am figjamandlimecordial

Medlar jelly! I was watching Hugh FW make that recently on tv. I looove the way fruit jellies glow in the sun – they’re like jewels…

Those washing up gloves are a hoot! Way too fancy for dirty dishes.
In my kitchen there are are two freshly baked loaves of bread and a couple of bread rolls….surrounded by lots of crap including breakfast plates/bowls, crumbs and more. (Sigh!) The opposite of hope and inspiration…sadly!

    • on February 18, 2010 at 7:52 am figjamandlimecordial

No, no, freshly baked loaves arealways hopeful and inspiring! :) Have a great day, dear friend…

Hehe too cool! I must get a hold of some. Cooma you say! Thankyou! :D

Beautiful stuff–although I must confess that the part of your post which really caught my attention was the microwave crisps! My temporary kitchen actually has a microwave, so I’ll be trying these out immediately.

In my kitchen is a tupperware tub with a little piece of sourdough set fast into the lid seam after a dishwasher cycle.

I’ve put it away in the cupboard this morning, feeling oh so lazy. But it’s now bugging me like crazy.
I’ll have to do the right thing and dig it out and clean it properly, won’t I!

@ Brave Tiger – what beautiful models you make.
They look like they are flapping from where I’m sitting. How charming.
