D to D Café

January 18, 2011 by Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Our foodie friends Cliff and Kathy, with whom we explore some of Sydney’s more unusual restaurants, own the D to D Café in the southern suburb of Beverly Hills.  Between Christmas and New Year, they were closed for renovations, and we couldn’t resist driving down for a meal to check out their new look.

The cafe was packed last night, so I didn’t get to take pictures of their pretty new decor, but we did have a  great feed, including selections from their new tapas menu. There were garlic king prawns, which came out sizzling…

…salt and pepper squid…

…garlic and herb roasted potatoes..

and these very moreish soy sauce chicken wings.

The well-stocked dessert cabinet boasted a mile high lemon meringue pie…

and a Mars Bar and Nutella cheesecake, which I’ve never been game to try!

The café is right next to the Beverly Hills Cinema complex, and it’s a great place for a quick meal before a movie.  If you do have a bit more time though, it’s always worth checking out Cliff’s wine and beer lists.  As a serious wine buff, he always has some interesting bottles on offer!

Now those are simply great photos! Beverly Hills how far is that from here, can i get there in time for lunch…. I saw a flight promo on TV for Australia, £699 but the tickets were to Perth! And how much does it cost to go from Perth to you? Dream on Joanna…..

    • on January 18, 2011 at 6:51 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Sadly, a return flight from Perth to Sydney would cost you almost the same again! Perth is such a long way away – nearly 3300km! Oh, but wouldn’t it be nice if you could pop over for lunch.. ;-)

Beautiful food! The Lemon Meringue pie is a work of art.

  3. on January 18, 2011 at 2:25 am heidi

So is that all meringue in the mile high pie?
I know you Australians love your meringue desserts, but that is a whole lot of egg whites!
Of course, I just had a salty caramel ice cream last night that was so very good. I guess there is no accounting for national taste buds! Lol!
    Everything else looks fantastic.
I always leave your blog drooling a little, Celia!

Doc and Heidi, thank you! It’s an amazing looking Lemon Meringue pie, isn’t it? I didn’t have a slice that night, but Pete’s had it before, and that really is a good 6″ of meringue on top of the lemon filling!

Easy way to my heart…Lemon Meringue Pie!

Any place that serves a Mars Bar and Nutella cheesecake must be a winner!!

  7. on January 18, 2011 at 8:16 am InTolerantChef

I do believe you mentioned garlic prawns? It all looks fantastic!

I like the look of the squid and the chicken wings. I don’t think I could eat a Mars Bar and Nutella cheesecake – I think that sounds horrid.

Brydie, I’m partial to a little LMP myself! :)

Amanda and Deb, I’ve never tried the Mars Bar and Nutella cheesecake, but it’s very popular. I’m not sure I could eat it either, Deb, not when there are things like maple syrup pancakes on the menu as well.. ;-)

Chef, the garlic King prawns were fantastic – I tried to take a pic of them sizzling!

Its such a long time since I’ve seen the ‘sizzling garlic prawns’ presentation – my absolute favourite especially if there’s crusty bread to mop up all those oily juices (quiet moment to salivate) :)
Isn’t it fun to be part of foodie friends venue’s & share their enthusiasm, my fave thing to do, hang out at friends restaurants.

Yes, but, Joanna, it is possible to cycle from Perth to Sydney and you would have a superb appetite for lunch – by the time you got there – and by that time you would probably have celebrity status and could fly home first class, well contented. Problem solved! As for Mars Bar and Nutella Cheesecake – some days, by 3pm, I’m sure I could syphon up one of those and smile.

Mars bar and nuttella cheese cake! That sounds very indulgent. Their roast potatoes look scrumptious. I really need to find some friends with restaurants.

  13. on January 18, 2011 at 3:32 pm Lorraine @ Not Quite Nigella

Ooh so much to love in this post! Firstly the potatoes are pure food porn and the Mars Bar and Nutella cheesecake? Be still my lustful heart! Carm from La Casa told me that I need to make a nutella cheesecake so perhaps I should try theirs (for research purposes :P ).

  14. on January 18, 2011 at 3:45 pm Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Anna, Claire, we have quite a few friends in the food industry, but Cliff and Kathy are the only ones we know who own an eatery. It is fun to be able to eat good food and support friends at the same time!

Lorraine, I love how the Mars Bar and Nutella cheesecake has created so much discussion! I am going to try a slice next time I’m there, just for research purposes. Will have to make it a day when Big Boy is with us, as I don’t plan to eat a whole piece on my own! :)

Jan, can you imagine it? Joanna would indeed have celebrity status.. “tourist cycles from Perth to Sydney to eat Mars Bar cheesecake!”. LOL

  15. on January 18, 2011 at 3:54 pm Amy

Yum!!! You are making me super hungry!!

  16. on January 19, 2011 at 3:00 pm Jade

Ooh, we were just there the other day! We love the Beverly Hills Cinema complex, although I have to admit that we’ve been on our way there before and just detoured to Paul’s Hamburgers at Sylvania!

Definitely getting the sizzling prawns next time, they look delish!

  17. on January 19, 2011 at 5:02 pm Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Amy, it’s nearly dinner time now, and those sizzling prawns are making me hungry all over again too! :)

Jade, the new Beverly Hills complex is seriously impressive, isn’t it? Thanks for stopping by (here and the cafe! :)).

oooooo those potatoes and chicken wings look good!!then again so do all the food. Another suburb in Sydney that we have to visit…

    I’ll go the garlic prawns.
(You can give the rest away to the needy.)

  20. on January 21, 2011 at 9:14 am MamaVix

Those prawns…yum! Remind me of a dish I had up here on the northside which had bacon and prawns and garlic…that was seriously good, with bread to mop up. I am a garlic prawn tragic…

If you do make the trip to Beverly Hills, and still have room after dining at D to D (is that a reference to Dusk til Dawn?) you should cross the road and go to this great Patisserie that specializes in biscuits by the kilo.

Lulu Patisserie – 544 King Georges Rd. So much choice, so little room left in your tummy…

    • on January 22, 2011 at 4:24 pm Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Vix, I have no idea what D to D stands for – will have to ask Cliff. Thanks for the recco re the patisserie, we’ll look out for it next time we’re there! :)

  21. on January 24, 2011 at 12:49 pm Susan

I would definitely try a piece of that cheesecake if I were there! Yum!

    • on February 14, 2011 at 11:37 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Susan, hope you get a chance to check it out one day! :)
