Free Ham Bones from Paesanella

February 9, 2011 by Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

A headsup to Sydneysiders – Johnny at the Paesanella Cheese Shop in Haberfield has asked me to let you all know that he has free ham bones to give away on an ongoing basis.

These are absolutely wonderful for hearty soups – we use them as the basis for our survival soup at least once a week. They last for ages in the freezer, and have provided us with many an emergency meal.

Johnny said the bones will be available on a “first come first serve” basis, so if you’re driving from a distance to get them, it might be worth a call first to make sure he has some in stock.  Please also note that the bones will be available only from their Haberfield store (and not through their online website).

While you’re in the shop, do check out all the other wonderful things they have in stock. I came home today with a tub of warm ricotta, freshly made this morning!

Yumm, do you think he’d deliver interstate :) ? I wish! I use smoked lamb bones to make a winter soup for my friends who eat kinda-kosher, they’re delicious too.

That’s very nice of them. I hate to see anything go to waste!

I often dream about their ricotta… and I’ve only had it the once!

hmmm warm ricotta! i have never been to Paesanella, but fresh ricotta is a powerful incentive.

Becca, smoked lamb bones sound delicious!

Claire, Anna, I think it’s very nice of them too. Johnny and Rita would far rather give the bones away than throw them out!

Brydie, it’s pretty amazing stuff, isn’t it? :)

Anne, they have fresh ricotta on weekdays, just make sure you get there in the morning. It’s delivered around 8am, so warm for a couple of hours after that…

I’m envious! Once in a while I wish I lived in Sydney. The butcher with the nice ham charges big bikkies for his ham bones and there is no where to find fresh ricotta. The ricotta is so nice spread on fresh fruit bread.

Ah well, Liz. You have wallabies on the front lawn, instead. :)

I am soooo jealous–I have to keep reminding myself that even if I still lived in Oz I’d be too far away to take advantage of this!

Nancy, I wish you still lived in Oz too! :)

I love ham bones! I always use them when I make a hearty split pea soup.
