Deus Ex Machina (Latin: “god from the machine”) is a motorcycle emporium in the inner-Sydney suburb of Camperdown.
Located in the old Oddbins site (now I’m really showing my age), the company specialises in customised motorcycles, but their Sydney headquarters offers so much more than that. The large space houses a workshop, a bustling café, and a shop selling bikes, surfboards and clothing.
We had planned to pop in for lunch, but ended up spending a couple of hours in the shop instead – Pete bought clothes, while I took photos with the Hipstamatic app on my iPhone.
I had fun experimenting with the different black and white settings…
The entrance to the workshop is at the top left of the photo…
Just for fun, a grainy black and white Hipsta combination (Buckhorst and US 1776)…
All the motorcycles were gleaming and polished…
I’d never realised how beautiful they could be…
The colour photos were taken with Hipstamatic’s new Wonder lens and W40 film, which seemed a good match for the ambiance of the store…
I have an appalling weakness for boots, but didn’t buy any…
…nor did Pete buy a $700 vintage leather jacket, although he had fun trying some of them on…
The range is wide and eclectic, extending to brightly coloured toy robots and expensive funky sunglasses…
Deus Ex Machina is a fabulous place to visit – whether for a meal, to shop, or just to admire the motorcycles. At the moment, their winter clothing range is 50% off – Pete bought a great oilskin jacket and wool shirt.
Oh, and because my Latin scholar son was so appalled by my initial pronunciation of Deus Ex Machina, here is a YouTube video on how it should sound. Big Boy wouldn’t let me go into the store until I’d learnt to say it properly!

Piece of cake for a Brazilian to pronounce (thought I should let you know and brag a little… ;-)
very beautiful photos, Celia, I loved the grainy black and white, cool effect! I cannot believe I went to Hawaii and back and never played with Hipstamatic, I guess I just don’t “have it” in me. I am too impatient, did a few of the random shakes of the camera, and every single shot I attempted turned out horrible. Oh, well
I can photograph vicariously through you!
Ah well, it’s not for everyone, Sally! :)
but what was the food like?
We went shopping instead of eating that day. But the cafe was very crowded!
No, no, no, I shall not permit my Pete to visit there – he will want to buy a bike, and boots and a jacket… ;-)
Brilliant shots Celia – such fabulous effects.
:-) Mandy
Hehehe…this is how the conversation went:
Me: “Babe, you don’t ride a motorcycle. Why do you need an oilskin jacket?”
Pete: “It will be really good for keeping the wind out. And it’s half price. Here, let me try it on..”
Me: “Ok, you look hot. We’d better buy it.”
:D
That sounds about right although my Pete does ride motorcycles so I would have a wee bit more of a difficult time with “reason”… :-)
You know of course that when you and Pete come to Sydney, this will now be the first place we shall have to take you. Before the Opera House. :D
I’m not into motorcycles myself (a friend of mine died as a teenager in a crash). But this looks like an interesting place. I bet it smells great too!
I’m sorry to hear that, Lizzy. We’re not into them either, but this place is really gorgeous, and offers so much more than just bikes. And I must say, they were magnificent machines.
Cool photos, I love black and white photos. How about a pic of Pete in his newly acquired oilskin jacket. I can’t believe you walked out of the store without buying anything.
Norma, as my sons will happily tell you, I am the least cool person you’re ever likely to meet. I was just happy to look and take photos! :D
these photos are amazing! I too would not buy the jacket, even if it was priced in Rands. Have a super weekend :)
Tandy, the jackets were gorgeous, all cracked and worn in, but just couldn’t go there at that price!
I share your boot addiction, and I’m not sure I could have walked past those so easily ! The first photo is stunning with that deep blue sky as a background. and what a great idea to have a shop, cafe, garage you name it all in one place :)
Claire, the old boots were gorgeous – I don’t have any stirrup boots, only cowboys – but it appears most bike riders have bigger feet than I do. ;-)
I would draw the line at a $700 vintage jacket. :) Love the photos — you’re getting pretty clever with those black and white ones.
Thanks Maureen! My bank draws the line at $700 jackets for me.. ;-)
I love that your son made you practice the pronunciation before he let you go.
The tyranny of intelligent sons! My youngest makes me study up on all the candidates before I can go vote- and my eldest spent a good hour working on my pronunciation of a Chinese menu before he would take me to lunch!
Your photography is beautiful and unique, Celia- you have an artists eye.
Thanks Heidi! Big Boy was soooo unimpressed when I said, “doos ex masheena”. Even Small Man who’d only just started Latin was shaking his head. Good on Jordan – you need to know who you’re voting for! :)
What an unusual and fun store…my husband would have been in heaven. Nice photos!
Thanks Karen! It really is unusual. The first time we ventured in, we were very surprised – I’d had visions of leather and chains and grease. Instead there were gleaming bikes, gorgeous clothes and kids running around! :)
I’ve seen some pretty large cycle shops offering clothing et al, but I’ve not seen one with toy robots and a cafe. This looks like a great way to spend a couple hours although, it seems that owner is going to get a few dollars from you, one way or another. Pretty shrewd of him.
Apropos to nothing, I found guanciale!!!
You found guanciale!!! Yaaay!! :)
Cool pics Celia! Isn’t it fun to play around with that app? I could take pictures of things all day :)
Emilie, I’m an having just the best time with it! Thanks! :)
Hi Celia! Great photos and a really interesting shop. Wish we had something like that down here – wish we had anything down here in Gippsland!
The jackets are unique, but I have to tell you that I spent more than $700 on a motor bike jacket earlier this year – and it was brand new! I’d struggle to walk past the boots though. Cheers.
Meaghan, you probably ride a motorcycle, which would make the jacket a justifiable purchase! My Pete doesn’t. :) The boots were just gorgeous, I may need to go back for a better look.. ;-)
Fabulous pics, Celia, I really love the black and white shots of the gleaming bikes.
Now don’t laugh, but when I read the title of your post in my reader I pondered over what it could possibly mean…coming to the incorrect conclusion that you were making bread dough in a machine. But surely not..it couldn’t be, right?! Not Celia, goddess of all things bread! Glad to see I was wrong, lol! Have a wonderful weekend. :)
Chris, I’m just grateful you didn’t read it as Deu Sex Machine. :)
You didn’t buy boots or a $700 second-hand jacket? Please tell me you bought the sunnies! I love the look of these bikes. They are beautiful. I can just see my Archie on one of these – and I wish I couldn’t! What a great place – so different. Love your images Celia xx
Charlie, Archie would have a field day in there. As would Carl and his camera, I reckon.. :)
You captured great images of D.E.M. When we lived at Darlington it was a regular Sunday morning walk destination. Always interesting bikes. It’s been amazing to watch it evolve from a few bikes into a thriving business attracting all types of people.
ED, thank you! I loved that the cafe was full with queues at the counter, and the shop had small children in it. Very accessible to all!
I think its terrific that the business is so diversified- from bikes to toys to food. It really must have been fun for you to have forgotten about eating lunch :)
We thought..”we’ll just pop into the shop until it’s less crowded at the cafe counter” and then didn’t come out until it was time for the school run! :)
I want those green sunglasses, bottom left. Could not find them on the website for sale but just as well, trying to save at moment, meaning not spending….but did buy a little lens to attach to iphone4 – like one we saw in Eveleigh, but bargain at $39 just want to see if it saves me lugging my big Canon around all the time. Putting this place on my list, have you been to Kitchen by Mike yet, if not why not? not bossy just Roz
You are bossy, but I’m all the better for being bossed by you, or we’d never have ended up at the MCA. :) Haven’t been to Kitchen by Mike yet, sorry. ;-) Where did you get the $39 lens? The one I was looking at was $99, which is a bit ludicrous really..
I’ve been in here twice & each time a mothers group was in full swing – so many crying babies! It was takeaway coffee for me! LOL. I love their robot collection very much.
Mel, there were the cutest kids in the cafe the day we were there too! I’m a sucker for all babies, crying or not.. :)
Ha ha! When I saw the title in Google Reader I thought you had bought a new pasta or espresso machine. :) Have a lovely weekend Celia.
PS you inspired me and I got my hair cut short again.
Rose, I don’t drink coffee! :) Short hair is always good, I reckon. Makes life easier. x
This place looks very cool Celia. Love your photos :) I thought you were writing about a coffee machine when I saw your post title too!
Thanks Jane, it was a fun afternoon!
My friend loves going there to buy gifts for her son (tshirts, not motorcycles! :P) .Nice shots!
Thanks Lorraine! xx
Lucky I checked back on your blog before I deleted it from emails and found your question. Bought on http://www.ozsale.com.au it just might still be on sale.

Beautiful photos Celia! I think the old-style one is my favourite. It really looks like it was taken 40 years ago.
Deus is also a realy well-known Belgian rock band & the name of a prestegious beer in Belgium!
Thanks for this cool & lovely post, something completely different too!
Sophie, I’m glad you enjoyed it! xx
What a fantastic place to visit, and yes as sophie says Completely different, what a fantastic formula, bikes, clothes and coffee! perfect.. c
Thanks Celi, we really enjoyed it! Must go back and check out boots.. ;-)
Great pics once again, Celia. I’ve loaded Hipstagram onto my phone, but can’t work out how to use it. That store looks like boy heaven.
Amanda, I had to make Pete leave. That doesn’t happen very often in retail stores. ;-)
There’s a great Hipstamatic tutorial here:
