Good last three seafood shots. Pattern & repetition are so often the basis for design, especially with colours like these.
Thanks Peter!
Really gorgeous photographs!
Sue, it was such a beautiful day!
it all looks so fabulous, no pelicans just sea gulls here, sigh
Claire, lots of seagulls there too – really bold ones too!
Sure wish I had access to freshly caught seafood, never mind right off the boat. I am sooooo jealous. Beautiful photos.
Norma, we are very lucky to have it – in Sydney we take fresh seafood for granted and we’re often eating fish the day it’s caught…
Sydney Fish Market is an amazing place to visit, Celia. Love the photostory.
Thanks Lizzy! It’s not cheap, but it’s always fun!
No wonder he scared you silly. That size taking off right next you, would be like a small plane!
Brydie, they’re surprisingly big close up! There were three wandering around the fish market carpark that day…
Pelicans are so big I would have had a fright too. But good on him for knowing where the best seafood is. Looks like a beautiful winter’s day in Sydney. xx
Charlie, de Costis were closed that day, and I think there was quite a lot of seafood being thrown away, so the birds were everywhere!
Oh, how I wish I had access to a fish market like these! That looks wonderful, Celia. It’s probably a good thing that I’m where I am. Any closer to the coast and I’m sure quite a few other species would be on the endangered lists.
John, we are very spoilt for seafood in Sydney – actually, most produce in general is spectacular, with the possible exception of berries, which down grow well in our state…
I love pelicans . I could watch them for hours. The sheer size of them and those little eyes. Hope you had a nice lunch

Tania, it was a great day out, thanks! :)
I’ve still never been there Celia, I guess it’s the idea of trying to keep the fish icy cold for the three hour drive back home! Maybe next time :)
Becca, you can go and eat there, sitting by the water and looking out at the boats. It’s a nice day out!
The Sydney Fish Markets are amazing, aren’t they? I’m not a fish lover due to allergies but it’s such an experience to go there. I’d have given the pelican some fish just to watch it go down his gullet. :)
Maureen, that’s tough to be allergic to fish! But you’re right of course, it’s a lovely place to visit…if you’re not scared of birds! :)
Celia, one of my favorite places! Absolutely amazing seafood. I had my first taste of sashimi at the Sydney Fish Market :)
Emilie, the fish there is certainly fresh! Not cheap, but fresh! :)
WEll except for the cheeky pelican that looks like home to me.. Makes me quite homesick for the smells and noises of the fishing boats in Napier NZ.. c
Celi, you don’t get pelicans in NZ? On a sunny day, there are parts of Sydney that can get right under your skin and leave memories there forever..I’m sure Napier is the same…
Gorgeous pics again Celia – the crabs look very tempting.
Thanks Amanda! We didn’t buy crab, but we did come home with fantastic oysters and a huge ocean trout..
Beautiful photos Celia! I visited some pelicans last week too. Aren’t they beautiful birds?
Claire, just gorgeous! Especially compared to the ibises, which I find creepy!
Cheeky pelican but cute. I’ve been living (this time) in Sydney for 8+ years, and quite close by but I’ve never been to the Sydney Fish Markets. We’ve discussed it a few times. Now I’ve seen, your lovely photo’s, it should be the impetus we need.
ED, it’s a lovely day out! Just don’t go around Christmas, Easter or New Year! :)
Looks gorgeous. :)
Thanks Tandy!
Cheeky bird!
And aggressive too – they pelicans were fighting off the seagulls for scraps!
Dear Celia,
I think Sydney is blessed with this awesome place which never fails to impress overseas visitors and friends. Great shot of that smiley pelican!
Thanks Chopinand – we really are lucky to have the fish markets so close by, aren’t we?
If we had a fish market close to us, I would probably bankrupt us by buying there every week!
:-) Mandy
Mandy, it’s very easy to do – we never come away emptyhanded!
Oh dear, you captured so beautiful photographs… Compositions and colours fascinated me. You are amazing. Thank you, have a nice week, love, nia
Nia, thank you very much! It is a lovely place to take a few photos!
I have an upcoming post in which I will include sev pics of a brown pelican I recently met at a local fish cleaning station on our local docks – he of course was waiting for a few free scraps – he must have been a regular, since he was tame enough to allow petting – I’ve never had the opportunity of petting a pelican before!
Oooh Doc, I’ve never petted one either, that must have been quite an experience!
Looks like it was a beautiful day! What a lovely pelican. The ones I’ve seen here, in Florida and the Carolinas, are not so pretty, mostly brown tones with not very much white at all. I really love the contrast in colors from your seafood shots. I wish we had seafood like that here, although it would be very tough getting my hubby to try new seafood dishes and varieties. You are very lucky to have such abundance!!
Mel, we really are! The boys are big seafood eaters too, although Pete and Small Man aren’t big oyster fans. All the more for Big Boy and I though.. :)
I would be tempted to bring so much seafood home if I was there. When we lived in Florida, there were brown pelicans in part of the state and white pelicans in another but I have never seen the species in your photo that is two colors.
Karen, I never knew pelicans came in brown – I always assumed they were black and white!
Excellnet pics, Celia! Thank you for the wonderfoul tour in the harbour! :) The pelican looks freaking cool!
Thanks Sophie! The pelican was cool and yes, he did freak me out. :)
I have only been to the SFM once Celia and loved every minute of it. I hope to get back there one day. Love your photos!
Jane, I’m so glad you enjoyed it – it’s one of the places we always take visitors to Sydney!
Makes me JEALOUS!
We’ll go next time you’re here!
Hehe I met the friendliest pelican there too! I wonder if it was the same one! :P
I wonder if pelicans have territories? I’d love to be working the fish markets if I was one! :)
