I’ve been a bit unwell.
Nothing serious, but I think I might have pushed my body a bit too hard over the past few weeks. After the family all went home on Monday, I came down with an ear infection, dizziness and simultaneously managed to put my neck out, so that I couldn’t look over my left shoulder. I must be getting old, because I’m also quite exhausted.
Yesterday my friend and neighbour Nic, who didn’t know I’d been out of sorts, left a gift on our back deck. It was a completely spontaneous act of kindness – she’d seen the succulent at a nursery and thought I’d like it. And she was right, although I don’t just like it – I absolutely adore it. It cheered me up so much that I thought I’d share it with you.
It’s a Sedum Burrito – also known as the Dwarf Donkey’s Tail – and this is the healthiest plant of it that I’ve ever seen…
It’s supposed to grow prolifically, but I haven’t had any luck with small offshoots that I’ve planted in the past. As it’s a Sedum, it should in theory be able to grow new plants from every leaf it drops, which is a good thing, because it’s incredibly fragile. Just the lightest touch, and all the leaves fall off the stem (which is going to make repotting a tricky exercise)…
For now, we’re simply going to hang it on the deck, and hopefully the stems will grow and drape gracefully over the sides of the pot…
My friends really are the best. Thanks again, Nic, you’ve made my week!
Hope you feel well again soon. Cute plant :-)
Thanks Sandy! Cute really is the right word for it!
You could put a container of sand under where the plant is hanging- then if/when a leaf or stem fall, they all have the opportunity to grow. I had a couple of sedum plants that had lots of babies growing that way. Sorry you are feeling unwell- getting older is a daily grind ( at least that is my experience> :( )
Your friends and neighbors are the best- and you deserve the best.
Heidi, the problem with a container of sand under it is that the local feral cat will use it as a litter box! :) I’m collecting all the leaves as they drop off though – when I can! :)
that’s a cool idea heidiannie! Glad you like it – must say I saw it and it saw me and we just knew! Came home with two so we can compare porch aspects :)
Nicx
Thanks again, love. It’s now hanging on the corner of the back deck near the laundry tub with all the graptoverias – hopefully that will be a sheltered enough spot that will still let it get enough sun.
Great photos by the way…I miss you coming around to lie on the ground and photo my succulents!
Celia, your post comes at a time I am about to leave on a trip, and I’m glad I caught it before we leave, so I can wish you a smooth and quick recovery from whatever it is that cause this problem. Neck problems are tricky and hard to deal with, they can make you miserable, poor thing
glad you have wonderful friends nearby…
a virtual hug going your way….
Sally, thank you! I hope you have a wonderful trip! x
Wow, I’ve not seen one quite like that before, Celia. What a lovely gift… and do get some rest so you can be well again quickly ; )
Thanks Lizzy, and it really is the coolest plant, isn’t it?
Celia, I hope your feeling well again soon………
Damp coarse sands is a good growing medium for your plant; don’t bury the leaf just leave on the surface.
Aren’t you lucky to have such a wonderful neighbour!
Elaine, I think so! It cheered me up no end. Thanks for the propagating tip! :)
Sorry to hear you haven’t been well. I must have gone down in sympathy as I’m also unwell! I just love this gift and it must have done wonders to buoy your spirits. What a gorgeous succulent. I look forward to seeing it develop in future posts xx
Darling, you’re sick too? I’m so sorry to hear that, hope you feel better soon! x
Being sick is rubbish – I sympathise! But that plant is gorgeous, so I hope it aids recovery just by cheering you up.
Thanks Claire. Being sick really IS rubbish, but I’m feeling a bit better today…
I hope you feel better very, very soon sweetie, it must be the Winter Blues. We’ve all been fighting the lurking bug too, with sniffles and aches and bad nights sleep :( I think we all need a good dose of sunshine and Spring!
What a lovely Pick-me-up from your neighbour! So thoughtful and came at exactly the right time too. Hope you feel better soon, and take it easy for a while so you can recover properly instead of pushing yourself so hard xox
Becca, I’m taking this week off from exercising, and having a quiet one. Seems to be working, as I’m feeling much better today, thank you.. xx
poor you. your neck may be sore from all that cooking! mine is too x
Lynda, Pete says it’s from spending too much time on the computer. I suspect he’s right. Hope your neck is better soon too – I went and had a massage and it helped no end. x
Well the rushing about lowered your immunity, the suddenly cold weather brought on the middle ear infection, the infection made you dizzy, and even tho’ mostly in the head the process has taken all the air outa you !!!!! Simple, simple and horrid. I’ve just discovered a recurrence of small stones in my submandibular gland [probably close to an infection] and have put myself on quite a regimen of natural stuff, hoping . . . SLOW DOWN LADY and keep warm! The plant is beautiful!!!!!!!!!
There’s slightly more to the story, Doc, but that’s pretty close! A quiet week has helped no end.. :) And the plant is gorgeous, isn’t it?
Can’t help myself, can I :) ! Meant with love tho’ . . .
No, no, that’s absolutely how I took it! Thank you.. :) xx
Feel better soon! And enjoy your plant :)
Thanks Tandy, already feeling much better! x
What a beautiful gesture from your friend, Celia. I hope you are feeling better soon.. it’s no fun being under the weather.
Now, to the title of your post it did have me wondering a little…sedum burrito…could it really be? Enclosed in wrap bread with fresh fillings? Nooo…but yet…maybe!?
Take it easy, dear lady. x
Thanks Chris! I was really tempted to post “Sedum Burrito (It’s a plant)”. By the looks of these comments, maybe I should have.. :)
Get well soon Celia, I prescribe a warm wheat pillow, a good book on your ereader, soup cooked by the men in the family, hot herbal tea and a warm woolly rug.
Ooh Rose, even if I was well, that sounds like such an enticing suggestion! :)
That sounds just miserable and to put your neck out as well! Wishing you a speedy recovery and some well-deserved rest. I did wonder about the name of the post as well, as I saw a cactus burrito listed on the menu of a Mexican restaurant the other day ;-) x
Hehehe…I should have mentioned that it was a plant, sorry to confuse you all! Thanks for your kind wishes, feeling much better today! x
Oh no, you should keep us guessing, we love your little surprises ;-) Glad you are feeling much better.
I hope you are feeling much better soon. That is a gorgeous plant.
Thanks darling! On the mend now!
Oh lovely are you ok? Do you need anything? Chinese soup? Congee? :D I’ll deliver!
You are such a kind friend, thank you. I’m much better today.. x
Sorry you haven’t been feeling well Celia. Will have to pack extra special nutrition into that apple strudel for this Saturday!!! :)
I’m so looking forward to seeing you guys, T! x
Enjoy that thoughtful green gift Celia and get well soon! x
Thanks Jane! xx
An earache is bad enough but a stiff neck is so debilitating. I hope that you soon feel 100% again. Rest up, my friend.
Misky, I had a massage, which helped no end. I just have to be careful not to spend too much time sitting on the PC! :) Thanks for the kind wishes.. xx
Hope you are feeling better soon, Celia. When I saw the title of this post I thought, yum, I like burritos. It looks lovely but I don’t think I’ll be eating this one.
Jo, I seemed to have confused a few people – I was tempted to title the post “Sedum Burrito (It’s a plant)”.. :)
Sorry to read you’re not well, Celia, and hope you’re back to 10% real soon. One of the vendors at Saturday’s farmer’s market was selling succulents in a variety of planters and I immediately thought of you. Those that you planted looked so much nicer. :) Feel better.
Whatever her health Celia will get a laugh at your typo I am certain, John :D !!!
Well, I certainly did. Sorry, Celia. My bad.
Not at all, I knew exactly what you meant John, and was very grateful for your kind thoughts! :) Feeling much better, and thank you for thinking of me!
So sorry to hear you’ve not been feeling well, but I’m glad you were cheered up by your lovely friends sedum gift. I know exactly how a sore neck feels, since that’s exactly what I’ve been dealing with the past year, so you’ll definitely be in my prayers for a quick healing and recovery from feeling so tired. Take it easy and drink lots of tea!!
xx
Mel
Mel, I’m so sorry you’re still not better, that’s very hard! I hope you have some improvement soon.. xx
You and me both Celia! It’s this horrid Sydney weather!!
I do love you new succulent plant. It reminds me of bubble wrap. I just want to go and pop those little bubble leaves :)
Lisa, you’re not allowed near my plant. :) I hope you feel better soon! x
And from your blog post title I thought that a Sedum Burrito was some new kind of Mexican food. (We love our burritos and enchiladas around here.) I’m frying up churros this morning. Feel better, will ya? Hugs, Maz
Already do feel better, thanks darling! Don’t eat my plant.. xx
Hope you feel fine now!!
Lovely your new “burrito”, I too thought it was a new recipe!!!
Ale, I knew I’d confuse people! :) Ah well, it’s also known as a “Burro’s tail” plant. Much better today, thank you!
Get well soon darling! love your new sedum, and Heidi’s tip is brilliant, the things I learn on your blog. Chocolate might help of course, strictly medicinally xxx J
Thank you, dear friend. I’ve been drinking lots of Linden tea – love it! Need chocolate though, you’re right.. x
So sorry to hear you’re unwell. How lovely that you have such good friends – the sedum is splendid. Hope they’re cooking delicious things for you too.
Thanks Andrea, feeling much better today!
Hope you feel better soon – take it easy and listen to what your body needs:) Love the plant – have to keep your readers updating on its growth process. Happy Thursday!
Renee, I’m notoriously bad at listening to my body, and then it takes me out. On the mend now though! :)
Get well soon! At least we know you’re in good company – this plant is sumptuous!
Siobhan, thank you! Isn’t that succulent glorious! Fingers crossed that we manage to keep this one alive!
Lovely (the sedum). Yucky (sick). My house smells yummy, I think I’m addicted to the smell of bread baking now! Take care. Xxx
Thanks Ali – it’s very addictive, isn’t it? :)
Feel better soon!
Thanks Bronwyn! I’m feeling much better today! x
You seriously have the best neighbors ever! You are very lucky. I hope you feel better soon Celia! We’re all sick in this house :(
Em, I’m sorry to hear that! I’m feeling much better, just tired now, hope you guys are well soon too! x
How lovely to get a cute plant on a day you feel crap. I hope you’re feeling better today.
M, it was such a nice treat! And thank you, much better now!
I have grown this plant for at least 20 years and have never had a new plant from the fallen leaves, or ones I purposely put in a pot. But when it gets leggy and looking sad I break of about 3 inches of stem, pull off the leaves at the broken end leaving only a few rows near the tip and plant the stem and they root very easily, thus keeping the plant going. Does this make sense, I hope so.
Anne, that is a WONDERFUL tip, thank you! Can I ask – do you let the cuttings dry out for a day or two before replanting them, or do you just stick them straight back in? Thanks again..
No I just put them straight into a pot of new potting mix, usually a whole heap of them and they nearly always take root
Thanks again Anne! When they get leggy, I’ll try this!
Celia, I’m glad to read your feeling better. There have been some beast of bugs going round at the moment. Our household has been vibrating from the sound of earth shattering coughs for the last 6 weeks and I’m so over it.
The succulents are lovely…try as I might I can’t get any of mine to grow prolifically though, (little buggers ;-)
Brydie, they’re like zucchinis I reckon, sometimes they grow like crazy with no effort, and other times they just won’t work. Hope you’re all on the mend – it’s even worse when the kids are sick! xx
Hope you’re feeling better Celia. It’s horrible to wiped of energy (especially when patently you have so much normally).
Thanks Sal. Much better now, just a little bit of residual dizziness.. xx
Oh Celia, I am so sorry you were out of sorts and I didnt know. I am sorry. I love your new plant, and the random act of kindness
Hope you’re feeling better Celia :)
Much better, thanks! :)
