Small Man and I have been reminiscing about our favourite Sesame Street clips.
Actually, it all came about because my youngest son, who is currently fascinated with the study of linguistics (sigh), was busy telling me about the velarization of the letter “L”. This led to a kitchen rendition of the classic Bert and Ernie “La la la” song…

…which segued into my all time favourite, James Taylor singing Jellyman Kelly (Big Boy and I used to sing this as loud as we could)…

My sons adored Sesame Street growing up, and being a Muppet fan from way back, I was always more than happy to watch it with them. Do you have a favourite Sesame Street moment?

Oh yes, straight to mind came the Mahna Mahna song which we would sing endlessly on the bus on the way home from school…

Yeah- I was a real Sesame Street fan. We watched and sang and laughed and learned. I really loved the Counts laughter and lightning and thunder.
Heidi, the Count was one of my favourites too. I love how Jerry Nelson developed the character!
Definitely Sesame Street was my Archie’s favourite show. Here’s the clip that he loved the most and he still googles this to this very day. And I can’t believe your son loves linguistics! That would give me head spins! xx
I hadn’t seen this version, thanks Charlie! We watched the original one where Ernie was singing this song in his bedroom, gazing out the window. This version is really beautiful, no wonder Archie loves it! :)
I was talking to my husband about Sesame St just this weekend – spooky! I was reminiscing about the now departed Cab Calloway singing Minnie the Moocher on the show.

oh sesame street! the show I watch twice a day courtesy of my ‘channel 22 crazy’ daughter!! Love it :) I too was a big SS fan growing up, it’s lovely to watch it now and see how much the show has evolved yet stayed true to it’s origins. Great post!! xx

I loved The Count. I can still recite some of his clips. I think my favourite is the salesman…Would you like to buy an O, nice and round and sweet, looks just like a donut, almost good enough to eat. It will cost you just a nickel, (sshh, a a nickel) so buy the O and take it home tonight.
My son is 40 and I remember watching Sesame Street together as if it was yesterday. I think it was better back then before it became very politically correct.
Remember that fabulous sketch where Ernie was hired by the Count to answer the phone? I LOVED that one! :)
Oops! How could I forget Grover?? I loved Grover. I Grover, stand up straight and tall, I Grover, never flinch at all. I, incredible, I invincible……
Hahahaha…remember Grover the waiter? I used to feel so sorry for the customer he was serving! :)
Oh that’s such good, gentle fun. I remember watching SS with my girls and loving them all. There was so much talent there and laughter and education were hand in hand. I have a clip on my computer of the Muppet show performance of ‘Jabberwocky’ which I often watch just for the pure, silly pleasure of it. However, as I only have my iPad at the moment I would have to do a lot of ‘loolbooklookbook’ to be able to cut and paste the link from YouTube! I’m with Small Man, I love language, it’s use and evolution. I’ve just bought Bill Bryson’s book Mother Tongue.

A great post, Celia, and the comments to accompany it are fantastic, so many classic clips. Although I’m dating myself, I’m part of the Lost Generation, too young for the original Micky Mouse Club and too old for Sesame Street. Yes, life was sooo hard.

Must admit, I was a huge Daniel Boone fan myself. It came out here a few years after the States. What a hero!

It’s interesting how different all our childhood experiences were! I don’t know of a single child here who hasn’t seen Sesame Street! :)
I watched Sesame Street, then watched it with MiddleC and littlej. The show has always been such a favourite but we definitely love Grover best! Linguistics is fascinating but it would sure give me a headache too :) xox

The Cookie Monster! And the Count. When we lived in Japan, the Japanese businessmen would listen to SS to learn to speak better English. It was a great show!

My favorite SS character is definitely Cookie Monster, but I didn’t get to see hardly any shows as a kid because we had an old, crappy tv and it couldn’t pick up the channel that carried the show and parents wouldn’t pay for cable. I think I was a little more in love w/ the Muppets. Kermit is my fav, and I love to sing Rainbow Connection w/ him. Fozzie and Beaker are also right up there with Kermit as favorite characters.
I’d insert a clip of K singing Rainbow Connection from YTube, but I don’t know how.
