Turkuaz Motif have now closed their retail store, but can still be found at various Sydney markets (details below).
. . . . .
A quick post to let my fellow Sydney-siders know that Metin and Moya will be closing their Burlington Street Crows Nest shop at the end of January. They’re currently having a huge sale to clear out surplus stock, so if you’re after a bargain for Christmas, now is the time to pop in.
Long time readers will remember our earlier post on Turkuaz Motif, and it’s been over a year since our last visit. Thankfully, Stefanie left me a comment last week to let me know that they were closing (the building is being redeveloped), and Pete and I were able to pop in today. Metin and Moya will be keeping their market stalls, so the business continues to do well, but they won’t have a permanent shop for much longer.
The shelves are still packed with Turkish ceramics…
I hadn’t seen these hand-painted ceramic coasters before…
They now sell lamps as well…
Beautiful textiles fill a corner of the shop. We bought a tablecloth here last year…
I bought a few gifts, and a couple of large pieces for myself, including this gorgeous fish plate…
…and a traditionally patterned serving platter…
Coasters were only a few dollars each…
…and lovely Moya gave us this pot holder as a gift (and she made us both apple tea)…
Oh, and there were fezzes! Fezzes are cool, Doctor Who says so (Lizzy, I bought one for your Peter)…
I found this traditional Turkish hat with its jingly trim so irresistible…
…that I brought it home and wore it for the rest of the night. Oh go on, laugh, the neighbours all did!
I have no affiliation with the business, but Metin and Moya are genuinely lovely people, and I’m glad that their business continues to do so well. If you get a chance before January, do pop in and say hi (they’re more than happy for folks to just browse), or visit them at one of their market stalls.

Oh Celia, if Peter and I visit in January, we simply MUST visit this wonderful store!
Lizzy, don’t leave it too late, or they’ll be closed! :) I think they’re open until the end of Jan though.. x
Thanks lovely… not quite sure yet when we’re visiting, early-mid maybe. Depends on my health really. Lovely post. xox
Love the pic of you in your very festive Turkish hat! Shame about the store closing but good to hear that they will carry on with market trading. That fish platter is gorgeous, but all their stuff is!
Danielle, I just find it irresistible – and it’s so nice to be able to support such a lovely young couple!
Oh I love the traditional one Celia. I expect to see you in that hat next week
T, it’s beautiful, isn’t it? I’m trying to figure out how to hang them on the wall, so I can store them safely and still get them down to use them.
What a great shot of you Celia. So much fun! The ceramics look beautiful – the only problem is that I’m trying to downsize, not acquire more things…
Chris, you’re very kind, you don’t think I look completely nuts? :) We’re all supposed to be downsizing, I’m just a bit rubbish at it. :)
Go on tell me Celia, did you do a belly dance while wearing the hat?
Ha! No love, too much belly, not enough hat. :)
Oh you woman of many veils – and secrets. I’d need 6 hats and a few poles in order to dance in that outfit.
I love this shop and it wouldn’t be safe for me to go in with any money in my pocket. :)
Maureen, I’ve never come out there empty handed, so I know how you feel! :)
Oh Celia, how I wish I could spend a morning in this gorgeous store before it closes!
I think the hat suits you – you look lovely!
Have a beautiful weekend.
:-) Mandy xo
Mandy, you and I would have so much fun, we’ll make sure to visit Metin’s market stall when you finally come over (before we take your Pete to the motorbike shop!). :)
It’s a date! :-)
What a gorgeous load of pottery! I must not buy any more stuff. Boo!
Pat, fair enough, I’ll just take lots of pretty photos for you! :)
You look like a genie Celia- just gorgeous!
I’m glad the market stall will still be available, all the ceramics are so beautiful, especially those lamps xox
Becca, they have all sorts of lamps there – battery and electricity operated ones. I’m glad their market stalls will still be available too, although it has been really nice to see the large pieces on display!
Well I wish I lived in Sydney, this stuff is gorgeous!!!
It draws me in like a magnet, I find the colours and textures so appealing!
The hat suits you Celia! I would have gone crazy shopping in here. What a great place for Christmas presents.
Claire, some really reasonably priced ones too, especially when you consider that most of them are hand-painted! :)
I think your new hat is cool Celia. Love the color. I was wondering if you did a dance w/ it on too:) I’d love to visit that store if I were closer. I want the covered bowls, in two shades of blue with the white swirley’s on them. So beautiful!!
Melanie, I have a bowl in that design, I believe it’s quite traditional! It’s a struggle not to keep adding to sets! :)
I didn’t laugh- but my smile is a mile wide! You look very exotic in that hat, Celia- and if you didn’t dance, you need to put on your best pair of dancing boots and go for it!
I wish I could go and get some treasure- so glad you did!
Heidi, the hat jingles in a very festive way whenever I walk, I love it. Makes me feel a bit like an Emirates air hostess though! :)
This is the kind of place I get lost in. And the hat! LOVE the hat and the way you so easily make it come alive. :D
Judy, the hat is a blast, but Pete keeps shaking his head when he sees me in it! :D
I think you look splendid in that hat. I LOVE those whirling dervish plates!
Deb, the whirling dervish plates are gorgeous, and they come in every colour! I was watching a youtube clip of actual whirling dervishes, and it was amazing!
Too bad it’s closing. I would have a hard time choosing in that store! So many beautiful things! Lovely hat…I’m guessing you had music wherever you went while wearing it.
Manuela, they can definitely hear me coming – it’s like the proverbial bell around the cow’s neck.. ;-)
What beautiful wares! I wish I was closer! The hat you got is so much fun Celia and you rock it!
Clare, it’s just too much fun, really! I bought a fez for Pete too, but he won’t wear it!
Great photo of you Celia – you’re too funny! What a shame this store is closing. You gave me one of their little dishes and I treasure it. I’ll have to get down there before they close as their plates are fantastic for food bloggers – great for styling! xx
Charlie, it’s really not all that far from you – have you been in? You’d love it.. x
A Fez! That’s what I need. Beautiful shop- wish I lived a little closer.
Fran, we all need a fez! :)
What a fantastic shop! I wish I could be there to clear out the inventory. We had a local store close that stocked such unique, handmade dishes, bowls, odds & ends & I was so sad that they closed their doors. Of course I took full advantage of the sale but wish I’d bought more.
I think you look lovely in your hat. Are you wearing harem pants too?
Diane, don’t laugh, but I do own several pairs of harem pants. I tend to live in them. Here’s a pic of one of them from when we had lunch in the park a few months ago…
Celia – you absolutely rock! I’m going to find some for myself. I really love those colors.
What an Aladdin’s cave! I really love the picture of you in that hat most of all though Celia – it really suits you!
Andrea, you are very sweet, thank you. I love it too, but the rest of the fam have decided that it makes me look bonkers. :D
It’s really, really good that this shop is a long way from me. I doubt I could restrain myself with all those lovely dishes and bowls.
Amanda, I need to go and get tiles next, I’ve decided. You know how it is. :)
How glorious those plates are, but, oh, that hat Miss Celie! It’s so fabulous – full of Eastern Promise, and like Heidi, I didn’t laugh, but I’m still smiling! You just have to get fezzes for your boys- -all three of them. I’ve just been catching up on posts – loved your garden – as for chores round the house…. I once heard the question asked, “if you knew you only had 24 hours left to live, what would you do, and I thought, ooh, I’d have to finish the ironing!!!
Whadya think, is that a problem???
Jan, I bought a fez for Pete, but he refuses to wear it. We’ve definitely got part of our costume sorted if we ever need fancy dress. And ironing…rarely ever gets done here! :)
Beautiful plates and the lamps are lovely too… sigh sometimes I think it would be nice to live in Sydney!
Sue, it really IS rather nice to live in Sydney! :)
Hi Celia, I popped in again today and bought a few more things. I am sure I will be visiting again before the store closes as there are just so many beautiful pieces to choose from, I wish I had a bigger home :)
Stefanie, I need to make a trip back too – I’ve just thought of something else that I “need”. :) I wish I could afford (and afford to store) the bigger pieces too!
By the way love the hat, I always think don’t worry what others think and always do what makes you happy :)
Ha! I always do that, I’m quite thick-skinned like that.. :)
Suits you lovely :-)
Funny I was just re-admiring one of their bowls this evening.
Thanks darling! Their bowls are very lovely, aren’t they?
Like everyone else I LOVE the wares in the Turkish store. I have a small plate very much like the turquoise platter you have, that I bought in Turkey many years ago when on holiday there, I love it. Reminds me of a good holiday and of younger times!
Jeannette, they’re so richly colourful that it’s like having treasure, isn’t it! I try to keep mine in regular use, otherwise I’m inclined to hoard them!
I love you in that hat, I think you look beautiful xx
You are the loveliest of lovely friends, thank you! xx
This is almost worth popping onto a plane for:) I love their dishes, you’re a lucky gal to be there for the sale! I can see lots of future recipes arranged on some of those dishes!
Barb, I’m trying to find some way to hang them on the wall (they come with a hanging hole) – it’s the safest way to store them, and then I can take them down and use them whenever I want! :)
What an amazing shop – and such a shame they are closing, although it’s good to hear the business will continue. This looks like a great stop for Christmas shopping!
Kari, I’ve done a lot of Christmas shopping there, both this year and in times past! I often buy a small bowl and fill it with homemade chocolates!
The hat suits you! You look very fetching in it Celia! :D
Thanks darling, it’s the closest I’ll get to a costume! :D
Celia you simply must change your profile picture to the one in the hat…you look gorgeously cheeky! xx
My friend El just came over to tell me she’d seen the photo and thought I looked like a nutter.. ;-) Will we catch up before Chrissie?
You look gorgeous in that hat!!! Wow!
Rachel, thank you! It was fun to wear! :)
Thanks for popping in Celia & Pete, it was lovely to see you again (then again, & again, Lol). Just so you know, our website isn’t up to date, the best place for current information will be our facebook site:
http://www.facebook.com/turkuazmotif.
Here you can find our regular markets that we do each week, news, photos, etc. I’d love to see you jingling in that hat one day & Pete wearing the fez, & if you do I will wear the Turkish tribal jacket!
Moya, I think you should pinch that jacket off the shelf regardless, it’s gorgeous! So nice to catch up and see you all so well! x
It’s always such a shame when a special shop like this one closes. It’s not like there’s another one down the street to take its place. Too bad the owners aren’t opening at some other locale. Wherever will you get your hat next year? :)
John, it’s ok, I have their numbers, so I know how to find them the next time I have gifts to buy (for others or myself!). And I rarely buy hats, but this one CALLED out to me! :D
Gorgeous pic and hat but I really love your facial expression :) Sadly, I have done all my Christmas shopping, even for myself… but I’m sure many other people will benefit during the festive season. I’m happy to hear Metin and Moya will be keeping their market stalls. If you know where they will be can you please let us know :)
ED, their market locations are here:

xx
Thank you I ‘Liked’ the page. Speaking of FB, did you see this re Burrawan Gaian ?
That’s fabulous! Thanks ED!
Hahahahaha,…you look kind of cool, dear Celia. Lovely coloured plates too. Now, go on, belly dance! 😀😀
Nah, too much belly! :D
Hahaha. So true. 😉
Do you have any hand painted Turkish dinner plates left? Thank you
I’m afraid you’ll have to call them to find out, I’m only a customer. Thanks.
