My second batch of scones for International Scone Week was inspired by my blogging mates – a conversation with Tanya about using lard, and seeing Annie and Selma’s savoury scones baked in a round. I love it when that happens!
I used the same basic recipe as the yoghurt scones, but replaced the butter with flavoursome lard from all our confit experiments, and added strips of semi-dried tomatoes and crumbled chunks of English cheddar…
The scone week posts are flying in and we’re all baking (to quote Anne) “like 1950s housewives in gingham aprons”. Remember I’m doing the round up post on Sunday morning (Sydney time), so please send me your photos and links before then!
. . . . .
Here are links to all the posts so far –
grab a cup of tea and feast with your eyes!
Ha ha – let the lardy love continue! These look fabulous – cheese & tomato, so good together :) Am off now to check out the other posts….
As my Pete says, “Lard IS Love”… :D
Love the look of the scones. I had every intention of joining the fun, but with so many things happening here…time goes by so fast. Hopefully next year!
That sounds great! Hope the busyness has all been good! xx
You kill me with your titles- I swear I see words along the lines of lardy, duck fat, etc. at least twice a month from you and all I want to do is gorge myself on each recipe.
Hahaha….my family really did gorge themselves on these scones! :)
It’s 1030pm here and I would scoff the screen if I could :)
Come on over, I’ll get the kettle on.. :)
Ooo lovely!
Off to read the other contributors wonderful recipes.
Have a wonderful day Celia.
:-) Mandy xo
Mandy, thanks for always playing! You’re such a star and a wonderful friend.. xx
I’m still trying to find time to make my scones!!!! I finally bought my buttermilk today. Maybe this evening.
>
Misky, your scones looked divine! xx
Thanks. xx
If I hadn’t already baked three batches of scones this week, then these would be in the oven as soon as I finished this comment! I love the idea of using tasty lard in a savoury scone. Definitely a recipe to try. Nice one Celia.
You’re the queen of scone week – I don’t think anyone else baked three batches! Pete complained that I’d only baked two and Small Man ate most of them.. :)
I need to get with the program! Where’s my apron? These look delish!
Thanks Maz! They were fun to make too!
These look great. I love tomato and cheddar together! The lard must have given it such a wonderful flavor. All these scone recipes are making me want more!
Gretchen, it’s a lovely flavour combo isn’t it? I’ll have to make it again!
Lots of meat scones doing the rounds this week Ms Celia. I noticed Ms Chica had a meaty offering that actually outdid your meatiness this time! I guess as the home of the choritzo she should be promoting it eh? ;)
She’s the chorizo queen! Hahaha… :)
Yup ;) You are up early Ms Celia? (I should talk, I get up at 3am ;) )
Slept in until 5am this morning Fran. That’s a good hour for me, usually I’m up at 4.30! Bring on menopause, that’s all I can say.. ;-)
All the more time to go net surfing, catch up on your RSS Feed reader and interact with those strange people on the other side of the world when they are actually up ;)
what a great combo celia..x
Thanks Jane! xx
I bet these were good Celia, lard has a way of making things sooo moreish! What a fantastic response to International Scone Week!
Sandra, it’s been a fun week! Thanks for joining in – your scones amazed me, I’ve never known anyone to roll scone dough before! :)
Celia, three times I read it “Lady Cheesy” instead of lardy…. If I make these, and I can tell you I’m tempted – can I call them Lady Cheesy?
;-)
Oh yes, you can be Lady Cheesy Scones.. hahaha
Oh yum. You had me at lard :)
hehehe… :)
I’m impressed and Hungry after seeing these scones!
What a great idea and combination- love your creation, Celia!
Thanks Heidi, they were fun to bake. Hasn’t our Scone Week grown, love! :)
I’ve never tried tomatoes and cheddar in a scone but I knew in an instant that I’d love these!
Small Man smashed three of them in one sitting! :)
Anything cheesy has my vote. Hard to do a cheesy scone without it becoming too dense. How’d you find the consistency?
I used chunks of cheese rather than grated, so it wasn’t too bad!
Oh I knew scone week was coming up and then got side tracked…bugger!
Look at all those glorious scones you have linked Celia. Yum!
Never mind darling, there’s always next year!
Reading this made me hunger for good old plain scones. Needed a quick hit so I whipped up a double batch of ‘lemonade’ scones to put on the staff room table for morning tea. Teachers are akin to seagulls with chips when it comes to food, so they disappeared at a rapid rate. Funnily, I had mentioned ‘ISD’ to our photocopier supplier and he turned up with fresh date scones to share too. Sharin’ the love!
Teachers are always hungry! I used to feed the music department at our sons’ school, and they were the same! :)
Nom noms, Celia… what a fabulous round up and I love the sound of these lardy scones xo
Thanks Lizzy! xx
These look wonderful! I think sun dried tomatoes and scones are a lovely combination!
Sundried tomatoes in just about anything are good, I’ve decided.. ;-)
I have yet to make a savory scone, so I think it’s time to try it. What a great round up this year — YUM!
Judy, savoury scones are surprisingly good! :)
I have enjoyed your blog, but there is one question. What does moreish mean? We don’t use the word in the U.S.
Here you are, Anne.. :)

adjective: British informal
So pleasant to eat that one wants more
Love the title! Couldn’t ask for more with everything in it! :)

Gourmet Getaways
Thanks Julie! Wish I could share some with you!
I’ve never made scones with lard. But I am a big fan of cheese and tomato scones xx
I’ll have to bring you a bucket of lard when we get together next… ;-)
Holy Bat-scones!
Hey there lovely man! How’ve you been?
Your different savory scones look just wonderful, Celia! Really superb! x
Thanks Sophie!
Goodness gracious. What a roundup!
Huge this year, Greg! :)
I’ve actually never made savory scones. But I love the look and sound of these. We also have some mozzarella in the fridge… Yum!
Clare, they’re almost an instant meal in a way sweet scones can’t be, if that makes sense? :)
These must have so much flavour Celia, the lard is definitely a great addition- yummo! Xox
Becca, they were absolutely delicious! Small Man loved them! :)
I’m making these this weekend!

This has been such a great idea Celia. I’ve never thought of scones in so many new ways. I think I’m really going to expand my horizons. These look absolutely mouth watering GOOD.
Hasn’t it been great fun? I’m always astonished how much everyone comes up with! Thanks for playing love – now we just need to think up new names for all of these so your hubby will eat them…hahaha
Oh oh, I’m going to have a problem in a couple of weeks. My husband is retiring and he’ll be around all day seeing what I’m doing in the kitchen. I’m afraid I’ll have to do my cooking by sending him out or doing it in the dark after he’s fallen asleep. We’re going to have some adjustments to make over here.
