Lardy Cheesy Tomatoey Scones

August 15, 2014 by Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

My second batch of scones for International Scone Week was inspired by my blogging mates – a conversation with Tanya about using lard, and seeing Annie and Selma’s savoury scones baked in a round. I love it when that happens!

I used the same basic recipe as the yoghurt scones, but replaced the butter with flavoursome lard from all our confit experiments, and added strips of semi-dried tomatoes and crumbled chunks of English cheddar…

The scone week posts are flying in and we’re all baking (to quote Anne) “like 1950s housewives in gingham aprons”. Remember I’m doing the round up post on Sunday morning (Sydney time), so please send me your photos and links before then!

As my Pete says, “Lard IS Love”… :D

  2. on August 15, 2014 at 12:29 am Manuela

Love the look of the scones. I had every intention of joining the fun, but with so many things happening here…time goes by so fast. Hopefully next year!

    • on August 18, 2014 at 7:13 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

That sounds great! Hope the busyness has all been good! xx

You kill me with your titles- I swear I see words along the lines of lardy, duck fat, etc. at least twice a month from you and all I want to do is gorge myself on each recipe.

    • on August 18, 2014 at 7:14 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Hahaha….my family really did gorge themselves on these scones! :)

If I hadn’t already baked three batches of scones this week, then these would be in the oven as soon as I finished this comment! I love the idea of using tasty lard in a savoury scone. Definitely a recipe to try. Nice one Celia.

    • on August 18, 2014 at 7:15 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

You’re the queen of scone week – I don’t think anyone else baked three batches! Pete complained that I’d only baked two and Small Man ate most of them.. :)

  8. on August 15, 2014 at 2:45 am marilynscottwaters

I need to get with the program! Where’s my apron? These look delish!

    • on August 18, 2014 at 7:16 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Thanks Maz! They were fun to make too!

  9. on August 15, 2014 at 4:00 am MamaD1xx4xy

These look great. I love tomato and cheddar together! The lard must have given it such a wonderful flavor. All these scone recipes are making me want more!

    • on August 18, 2014 at 7:16 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Gretchen, it’s a lovely flavour combo isn’t it? I’ll have to make it again!

  10. on August 15, 2014 at 5:54 am narf77

Lots of meat scones doing the rounds this week Ms Celia. I noticed Ms Chica had a meaty offering that actually outdid your meatiness this time! I guess as the home of the choritzo she should be promoting it eh? ;)

    • on August 15, 2014 at 5:56 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

      She’s the chorizo queen! Hahaha… :)

      • on August 15, 2014 at 5:58 am narf77

Yup ;) You are up early Ms Celia? (I should talk, I get up at 3am ;) )

        • on August 15, 2014 at 6:01 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Slept in until 5am this morning Fran. That’s a good hour for me, usually I’m up at 4.30! Bring on menopause, that’s all I can say.. ;-)

      Thanks Jane! xx

  12. on August 15, 2014 at 8:50 am ladyredspecs

I bet these were good Celia, lard has a way of making things sooo moreish! What a fantastic response to International Scone Week!

    • on August 18, 2014 at 7:17 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Sandra, it’s been a fun week! Thanks for joining in – your scones amazed me, I’ve never known anyone to roll scone dough before! :)

  13. on August 15, 2014 at 8:59 am sallybr

Celia, three times I read it “Lady Cheesy” instead of lardy…. If I make these, and I can tell you I’m tempted – can I call them Lady Cheesy?

    ;-)

    • on August 18, 2014 at 7:18 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Oh yes, you can be Lady Cheesy Scones.. hahaha

  14. on August 15, 2014 at 10:54 am Tania @ The Cook's Pyjamas

Oh yum. You had me at lard :)

    • on August 18, 2014 at 7:18 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

      hehehe… :)

  15. on August 15, 2014 at 11:28 am heidiannie

I’m impressed and Hungry after seeing these scones!
What a great idea and combination- love your creation, Celia!

    • on August 18, 2014 at 7:18 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Thanks Heidi, they were fun to bake. Hasn’t our Scone Week grown, love! :)

  16. on August 15, 2014 at 11:36 am Maureen | Orgasmic Chef

I’ve never tried tomatoes and cheddar in a scone but I knew in an instant that I’d love these!

    • on August 18, 2014 at 7:19 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Small Man smashed three of them in one sitting! :)

  17. on August 15, 2014 at 12:55 pm Shirley Harring

Anything cheesy has my vote. Hard to do a cheesy scone without it becoming too dense. How’d you find the consistency?

    • on August 18, 2014 at 7:19 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

I used chunks of cheese rather than grated, so it wasn’t too bad!

  18. on August 15, 2014 at 2:11 pm cityhippyfarmgirl

Oh I knew scone week was coming up and then got side tracked…bugger!
Look at all those glorious scones you have linked Celia. Yum!

    • on August 18, 2014 at 7:19 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Never mind darling, there’s always next year!

  19. on August 15, 2014 at 5:49 pm fergie51

Reading this made me hunger for good old plain scones. Needed a quick hit so I whipped up a double batch of ‘lemonade’ scones to put on the staff room table for morning tea. Teachers are akin to seagulls with chips when it comes to food, so they disappeared at a rapid rate. Funnily, I had mentioned ‘ISD’ to our photocopier supplier and he turned up with fresh date scones to share too. Sharin’ the love!

    • on August 18, 2014 at 7:20 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Teachers are always hungry! I used to feed the music department at our sons’ school, and they were the same! :)

  20. on August 15, 2014 at 6:06 pm Liz Posmyk of Bizzy Lizzy's Good Things

Nom noms, Celia… what a fabulous round up and I love the sound of these lardy scones xo

      Thanks Lizzy! xx

  21. on August 15, 2014 at 7:34 pm ElizabetH

These look wonderful! I think sun dried tomatoes and scones are a lovely combination!

    • on August 18, 2014 at 7:20 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Sundried tomatoes in just about anything are good, I’ve decided.. ;-)

  22. on August 15, 2014 at 11:08 pm Judy @Savoring Today

I have yet to make a savory scone, so I think it’s time to try it. What a great round up this year — YUM!

    • on August 18, 2014 at 7:21 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Judy, savoury scones are surprisingly good! :)

  23. on August 16, 2014 at 10:01 am anne dailey

I have enjoyed your blog, but there is one question. What does moreish mean? We don’t use the word in the U.S.

    • on August 16, 2014 at 10:08 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

      Here you are, Anne.. :)

  29. on August 17, 2014 at 9:33 am The Life of Clare

I’ve actually never made savory scones. But I love the look and sound of these. We also have some mozzarella in the fridge… Yum!

    • on August 18, 2014 at 7:23 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Clare, they’re almost an instant meal in a way sweet scones can’t be, if that makes sense? :)

  30. on August 17, 2014 at 9:58 pm theintolerantchef

These must have so much flavour Celia, the lard is definitely a great addition- yummo! Xox

    • on August 18, 2014 at 7:23 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

This has been such a great idea Celia. I’ve never thought of scones in so many new ways. I think I’m really going to expand my horizons. These look absolutely mouth watering GOOD.

    • on August 21, 2014 at 6:21 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Hasn’t it been great fun? I’m always astonished how much everyone comes up with! Thanks for playing love – now we just need to think up new names for all of these so your hubby will eat them…hahaha

      • on August 21, 2014 at 6:41 am dianeskitchentable

Oh oh, I’m going to have a problem in a couple of weeks. My husband is retiring and he’ll be around all day seeing what I’m doing in the kitchen. I’m afraid I’ll have to do my cooking by sending him out or doing it in the dark after he’s fallen asleep. We’re going to have some adjustments to make over here.
