This month’s IN MY KITCHEN is now closed!
Please join us again in May! ♥
. . . . .
In my kitchen…
…were these gorgeously bright roses from my old friend Cate…
In my kitchen…
…is…squeeal…a new Kenwood Chef! I bought it with a very generous gift card from Peters of Kensington that our friends R&M gave me, plus some birthday money from my mum. It’s seriously heavy duty – 1200 watt motor, die cast aluminium body and a 6.7litre mixing bowl. It also came with a mincer, a glass blender and a bonus ice cream maker.
My old Kenwood has now been passed on to a friend – after ten years of hard service, it was battle scarred and noisy, but still in reasonable working condition.
In my kitchen…
…are new Turkish ceramics. They’re actually trivets, but I like using them as coasters (they’re large enough that hot drinks don’t tip off the edge)…
In my kitchen…
…are gifts from the lovely Kay, all the way from Ireland. The shawl is beautifully soft and covered in a shamrock print…
In my kitchen…
…is a pressie from my mate Tanya of Chica Andaluza. I’ve wanted the Moro Cookbook for years, so it was an absolute joy to receive it from Tanya, who has inspired so much of my cooking lately…
In my kitchen…
…there are always mutant trombies! The dark green one was growing halfway down the driveway…
In my kitchen…
…are Easter chocolates. This year I have Marvel superheroes in milk…
…and dark chocolate eggs studded with roasted almond praline…
In my kitchen…
…is a present from darling Kavey in London – the chicken egg cup now has pride of place on our shelves…
In my kitchen…
…is a treasured parcel from my dear friend Jason at Don’t Boil the Sauce! He felt that my life was incomplete without my own set of disco balls and a Eurovision music CD…
In my kitchen…
…is a lovely gift from Annette – I have another cheese knife from the same set, so I was very chuffed to add to the collection…
In my kitchen…
…are Thai cooking ingredients, including pastes, sauces and my favourite pea eggplants – picked up on a recent visit to Sydney’s Thai Town…
In my kitchen…
…is a gift from Donna in Newy – how many people can say they received a pomegranate in the mail for their birthday? It was delicious too…
In my kitchen…
…was a surprise from the brilliant Becca…she sent me a bunch of flours!
In my kitchen…
…are hot cross buns. I’ve been baking both yeasted and sourdough ones, although the latter are definitely more popular (there was a dozen on the tray just minutes before the photo was taken)…
In my kitchen…
…is a beautiful set of large Japanese bowls, a gift from my mother…
When I mentioned to my mum that I was looking to replace some of our soup bowls (we’ve had a couple of breakages recently), she pulled this set out of her cupboard. Presented in a wooden box with a ceramic tile inlay, she’d been unable to resist buying them at a David Jones’ sale over a decade ago (obviously the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree!)…
Here’s a photo of the inside of the Japanese bowl…
. . . . .

It sounds like you have had a lovely month Celia with lots of lovely gifts. That Kenwood is magnificent. Looking forward to seeing what comes out of it😊
Thanks Kay! It was glorious! I love my shawl! :)
Gorgeous things in your kitchen! The bowls are lovely. Isn’t it amazing how simple things can give us so much joy? You received some beautiful gifts for your birthday! I’m sure your new Kenwood chef will be put to good use! Glad you enjoyed your break and welcome back! Hehehe. I was starting to miss you!
I’ve been baking bread and rolls and making pancakes from the leftover starter. The children already know what to expect when they see my bowl of starter in the kitchen. There are never any leftovers! Lol!!
Manuela, how wonderful that your sourdough is still going strong in bison country! Never any leftovers – that’s a good sign! :)
How fabulous, so many wonderful gifts for a lovely lady :) I hope you have thoroughly enjoyed your celebrations and enjoy eating and using all of your new things x x
Elaine, it was the best fun ever! More in the next post! Thanks love! x
What a fantastic month! Such wonderful gifts and I’m glad you were able to enjoy it all. Those bowls are gorgeous. I too blame my mom for my addiction to kitchen items dish ware and all things kitchen!
Gretchen, my mum and I usually have very different tastes, so I was surprised how much we both loved these bowls! :)
What a treasure trove of lovelies! Those bowls are beauty. I’m doing the happy dance for you. Hugs, Maz
Thanks darling! It was just the best month ever! :)
What a glorious month you have had Ms Celia. Pure gorgeousness in your kitchen and that Kenwood Chef is heaven on a stick. Solid, hardworking and gorgeous to boot. Can’t wait to see what you crank out of him in the coming winter months. Those hot cross buns are beautiful. Like perfect little oval orbs of glossy deliciousness and those Japanese bowls are drop dead gorgeous. Bowls are my one true indulgence. You have been well indulged Ms Celia and its great to have you back on the blogging circuit :)
Fran, the Kenwood is an absolute beauty, and it came with so many attachments! I’m quite in love with it at the moment – have used it every day since it arrived! Thank you for the kind words, it’s nice to be back! :)
That Kenwood is lustworthy Ms Celia and HUGE kudos for you not bowing to trends and buying a Kitchenaid.
Lovely to see you back and the fruits of your Happy Month… not that your influence has been absent from my kitchen as you’ll see from the IMK post I’ll put up shortly…
What a wonderful array of thoughtfulness came your way. You’ll have so many more happy days flowing on from it, your birthday month could well last the whole year :)
ED, it’s our party year, girlfriend! Your turn next! :)
My turn is thankfully not for a good number of months… not that it will make any difference; it will be busy!
Welcome back Celia and how lovely to have celebrated for the month! Love all the goodies in your kitchen… interested to hear your feedback on the new Kenwood. Sounds like you’ll be having fun. I can smell those Easter eggs from here. And what a treasure your mum is, stashing away those bowls for so long. Glad they will be used! Happy cooking.
Lizzy, loving the new Kenwood so far, especially the huge 6.7 litre bowl! :)
Wow, wow, wow! And I bet it’s powerful too!
Ooops, I just commented on the wrong post! I meant to place it here! Welcome back love! I can’t wait to hear how you get on with that mixer… just saw one in the shops here :)
Em, I’m LOVING it so far. I’ve been testing out the dough hook – the motor is working well and seems to have enough grunt to put my overnight sourdough dough together without too much trouble. Part of the reason to buy a bigger machine was because my hands are starting to get sore, so I’m trying to “save” them. Interestingly, machine kneaded dough is a bit different to the one I bring together by hand – smoother and more even.
[…] to Celia of Fig Jam and Lime Cordial for hosting In My Kitchen and the IMK community for foodie inspiration & the virtual company […]
Those trivets and bowls are so pretty! I am a sucker for new dishes, even though I might have too many already!
I have a shocking weakness for bowls – I think I have more than I can use too! :)
I love these posts Celia! I adore some of your friends’ sense of humor! Bunch of flours!!
Isn’t she a hoot? I laughed out loud when I opened the box! :)
So nice to have you back and to see all your lovely treats! I don’t suppose your mum bought 2 sets of those bowls? May the festival continue for you all year! Xxx
Actually, she DID buy two sets, so now we have one each! And a set of matching small flat plates too! Thanks again for the gorgeous flowers love! xxx
Wow those bowls are beautiful! Love all your presents but what I love most is that you were spoilt just as much as you spoil everyone else.
Ah, you’re very kind, thanks hon! x
Welcome back – glad the celebrations were good and hope this year continues well.
Love the bowls in particular – I am starting to think about new ones but we’re still in the ‘danger I have small children phase’, so won’t buy anything I really love yet!
Claire, thank you! Oh how I loved the small children phase – I didn’t mind using Sesame Street melamine for those few years.. :)
Hello lovely happy-birthday-Celia. It’s so nice to have your effervescent post to open this morning – I was looking forward to you returning. Isn’t it interesting how you have similar tastes to your Mum. Decades ago I had been looking at and admiring some material in a sewing and patchwork shop in North Queensland where we were living at the time – and my Mum sent me a parcel from the UK with a present of exactly the same material and I hadn’t mentioned anything about it to her. Enjoy all your lovely presents.
Jan, it’s funny, because in all things fashion, we’re poles apart. But food and crockery, that’s obviously a different story! I’ve been using my Japanese bowl for breakfast every morning – it’s exactly the right size! :)
So nice to have you back, sweets, we’ve missed you. xxx
You are so kind love, thank you! I missed you guys too! :)
Glad to see you back and to learn you had 3 glorious weeks of birthday celebration. Enjoy your new Kenwood and all the other gifts in your kitchen.
Norma, thank you! Hope all is going well in your garden – ours has been ignored a bit – and the trombies are taking over as a result! :)
Welcome back Celia. I’ve missed reading your lovely posts. I never usually comment but I’m an avid reader of your blog. Warmest wishes and happy birthday. Dale
How lovely of you to stop by to say hello! Thanks Dale! :)
Hi Celia. Glad to hear you enjoyed all your celebrations. You received lots of lovely things. Especially love your Kenwood.
The Kenwood was a long time coming G – the plastic case on the old one was completely cracked and the motor used to cut in and out a bit. This one is all shiny and metal! :)
Welcome back! Glad you enjoyed your few weeks. Love love the idea of the “bunch of flours” – am going to borrow that one!
Isn’t it brilliant? I haven’t made anything with the flours yet, but I will! :)
CRIKEY ! – what a loved blogger you are, Celia ! And what a wonderful array of gifts from your colleague bloggers !
As for that huge and slightly alarming shiny machine … it tells me all I need to know about the importance of your kitchen.
:D
Feeling very blessed M-R! I keep stroking my new big machine – it’s so shiny! :)
And I’ll bet it stays that way for ages, regardless of amount of use.
Love the roses, now sadly departed and that wonderful cookbook and adored Donna’s selection! Glad you not only survived March but had a great time. I’ll have an ‘0’ at the end of my birthday come June also . . . well, it’s not quite the same one :) ! But that too is cool . . .
Turning 40, Eha? :) You spring chicken you.. :)
Hugs and kisses dearHeart . . . . you know . . . I don’t really wish . . .
I love your bunch of flours – what an original present. And I like your new-to-you bowls too. And your new Kenwood. I’ve got kitchen envy again – welcome back x
Sorry darling, didn’t mean to do that to you. The new Kenwood will be a godsend I think – I’ve already been using it to mix my doughs up and it’s saving my (at the moment) sore hands and fingers!
Everyone should have a disco ball somewhere…I think I need to remedy the fact that I don’t! Gorgeous happenings in your kitchen Celia and happy, happy, happy birthday! xxx
Brydie, J was quite shocked that I didn’t have a single one! Now I have four! Thanks love, it was a glorious birthday, still basking in the afterglow (aka hangover).. :)
What an incredible month of goodness for you. There isn’t anything that I’m not just the teensiest bit envious of. :) You deserve it all and more.
Hello gorgeous, yes, it was a glorious month. More photos to come in the next post. Thank you for being so lovely! x
Omg those chocolate eggs with almond praline look AMAZEBALLS!! I’ve just posted ‘what’s in my kitchen’ here: http://goodfoodweek.blogspot.com.au/2015/04/life-whats-in-my-kitchen-this-month.html
Thanks Shari! They were fun to make too! :)
I love Jason’s gift. Have you used it yet? Your hot cross buns look a lot better than mine. I love your chocolate eggs – how lovely to have handmade Easter eggs xx
I’m thinking of keeping the Eurovision CD in the car with the Elvis Christmas one! :) Have a great Easter Charlie! x
Wow, congratulations on the gorgeous-looking new kitchen gadget!!!
Julie & Alesah
Gourmet Getaways xx
Julie, isn’t it shiny? And BIG! It will (apparently) knead 2.6kg of dough! :)
What a great post that I not only enjoyed, but it brightened my day Celia!
Congrats on your new Kenwood, lovely pressies for your birthday, love your bowls and trivets and glad you enjoyed Jason’s inspiration of creating your birthday video from bloggers worldwide too!
Thanks Jo! I’m madly in love with my new Kenwood – have used it daily since it arrived! :)
What a haul – and very much deserved. The bunch of flours is genius!
I KNOW, isn’t it brilliant? :) Thanks love x
[…] am happy to invite you back into my kitchen via Celia from Fig Jam and Lime Cordial’s monthly In My Kitchen […]
Welcome back, Celia. What a lot of lovely pressies in your kitchen. I love Moro cookbooks and I think you will love it too.
Hi Debi, it’s nice to be back! The Moro book is a lovely read, I’m enjoying it enormously! :)
Hello spring chicken, it’s lovely to see you back.
Thanks love! How’s life in your beautiful part of the state? :)
My goodness, I don’t know what to comment on first, so many good thing. I have never seen pea eggplants before, so will be curious to see what and how you cook with them. The roses are gorgeous and so lucky of you to get the Moro cookbook.
Shaheen, the pea eggplants are a Thai speciality – I find them very addictive. They’re quite hard and a bit bitter. An essential part of Thai green curries for me! :)
Thank you for letting me know more about the pea eggplants, I will look out for them, as I do love veggie green Thai style curries. Here is my IMK entry, as always THANK YOU so much for hosting.
http://allotment2kitchen.blogspot.co.uk/2015/04/april-sunshine-in-my-kitchen.html
I see your new mixer has Intelligent Control. Just an observation.
What are pea eggplants? What do you do with them? Intriguing.
As far as I can tell, “Intelligent Control” means it starts slowly so all the flour doesn’t get blown out of the bowl. Have to say, it works a treat. :) The pea eggplants are tiny and hard – I like them in Thai green chicken curry! :)
Sounds like a wonderful birthday Celia…Happy Happy Belated Birthday!
Thanks Dzintra! :)
Wow a new Kenny, thats so fabulous. Gosh I did smile thinking about your Mum pulling that set out of her cupboard. You did have a great birthday didnt you. So very wonderful that you have been spoilt xx
I know, can you imagine how excited I was? It works a treat too! :)
Well, I don’t know about you but I’m quite exhausted, having vicariously lived through your fabulous #festivalof50!! What a lot of lovely presents – that Kenwood is fabulous as are the bowls from your mother. And those chocolates – oh my!!! I am quite sure that you have Jason’s CD playing on repeat, as I know I would!! Love xx
Thanks for sharing vicariously in it with me, lovely! xxx
So good to hear what a fabulous birthday you had – I was thinking about you yesterday while I made your hot cross bun recipe with my sourdough and Kenwood. Welcome back!
Kim, that’s fabulous! I’ve got a batch of the same dough rising now! :)
Hope you had a wonderful birthday Celia. xx What a feast of lovely goodies in your kitchen and how fantastic to have the new Kenwood Chef, a real birthday treat!
Thanks Chris, it was such a fun few weeks! I’m still thrilled over the new Kenwood!
Wow – what a month in your kitchen! So thrilled for you that you received so many lovely gifts from around the world. It just reinforces what we already know…that you are a truly amazing women who has made our lives richer for “knowing” you :) Big hug x
You darling woman, your pressie was one of the first to arrive and I was so excited! Thank you again for thinking of me! xxx
Sounds like you had a wonderful time and what a lovely array of goodies! We just bought a Kenwood blender from Peters, our cheap ones kept breaking and I was sold when the sales lady said it could turn ice into snow, my first thought was great I can make Moscow Mules! :) x
Hahaha…you can never have to many Moscow Mules! Stef, Moya’s shop is moving again – you might want to pop in before they close? x
Thanks for the reminder Celia, I’ll have to pop in before they leave x

Welcome back Celia…missed you but it sounds like you had some serious celebrating to do. I love everything in your kitchen but that is one major machine you’ve got there. I’m a sucker for roses and those are such beautiful colors.
Do you have mice in your house? How in the world did those hot cross buns disappear so fast…your boys are quick! I’m very surprised the chocolate Easter eggs lasted long enough for a picture – but maybe no one was around?

Aren’t birthday months wonderful! You deserve to be solidly spoiled, so I am glad you were. I am downright jealous of your Kenwood. Great size bowl. I am waiting for mine to die so I can upgrade but it just keeps going (& going, & going). I am very interested to see what you do with all your flours.
I forgot to let you know my IMK post was up :)

Such beautiful gifts Celia- and of course some of those mutant trombies had to make an appearance. The Kenwood is very special and you should get plenty of years out of the beast. Must try some sourdough Hot Cross buns next year.
What amazing gifts! I wish you well with your new Kenwood Chef :)

All the wonderful presents, just shows you how loved and appreciated you are by people all around the world. I’m so glad that you celebrated your 50th birthday with such style!!! Milestones are meant to be enjoyed! I have finally posted my IMK this month, Just in time I think :) Liz xx

I love the Marvel chocolates but those chocolate eggs make my mouth water! I really want to try them!
Welcome back Celia! Looks like you had a marvellous birthday month – great selection of gifts you received, all very apt! Belated happy birthday!
A belated very happy birthday! I’m not so sure about the CD but everyone needs disco balls in their life (mine hang on the Christmas tree :D) and those bowls from your mum are gorgeous. Maybe by next year I’ll have begun actually making bread with my sourdough starter and can tackle some non-yeasted hot cross buns! xx
What a fabulous month you’ve had! I have to particularly admire the new Kenwood – I’ve had a progression from my mum’s 40 year old Chef, to a slightly newer one I bought at a second hand shop to my current one that’s actually called a Kenwood Major – I’m not sure of the difference to your super large Chef as the bowl is the same size I think, but I’m sure you’ll love it – I can’t survive without mine!
Lovely gifts too, and you’re reminding me I really should try sourdough hot cross buns – I have to say I haven’t had as much luck with sweet sourdough, but I should try again…
I also have to rather sheepishly say I’ve only just got my IMK post up – it’s been one of those weeks!

thanks Celia!
[…] However this time it’s a bit more not in my kitchen than usual due to short but brilliant trip RJ and I took to Japan during the last two weeks of March. Theoretically one day I’ll blog the trip but in the meantime there are a few food-related bits and pieces below and quite a bit more, including where everything was, over on this Instagram hashtag. As always I’m linking up with Celia for IMK. […]
Hi Celia,
I came across you blog today and really amazed with the recipes in In My Kitchen section.
I am a restaurateur and run my own food blog. May I know whether I can participate in your next In My Kitchen, and if yes, how to go about it?

Hi KP! Just write an IMK post on your blog before the 10th of the month, link back to Fig Jam and Lime Cordial, and let me know! I wasn’t able to view your blog though – it will obviously need to be written on a public blog. Thanks! :)
Hi Celia,
Thanks for your reply. I will do as you mentioned and join the July In MY Kitchen,
Cheers!
