Indoor Skydiving, Part 2

April 17, 2015 by Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Small Man is studying for his HSC (matriculation) exams this year. As the assessment is year long, he’s facing a pretty constant grind for the next few months.

He so enjoyed indoor skydiving that I decided to splurge and book in some more sessions for him this year. After completing the initial two flights, flyers are able to book in for more advanced training – the second stage being five double flights (1 minute 40 seconds each) taken in a half hour block.

It’s an expensive sport, and the actual flying time doesn’t sound like very long, but it’s completely exhausting – both boys came out looking like they’d had a hard session at the gym. It takes a lot of stamina to hold your own against the big wind!

During this latest visit, the boys learnt to spin and to fly up, down, backwards and forwards. I’ve included just a couple of short videos – in this first one, Small Man executes perfect tight spins in both directions…

. . . . .

Big Boy has quite a different flying style. His spins weren’t as elegant as Small Man’s, but he had greater control over where he was in the wind tunnel, and managed the up and down movements well. Both of them found moving forward and backwards tricky…

. . . . .

We have more flights booked for next school holidays!

What an amazing sport! No wonder they enjoyed it, as it looks like lots of fun. Do they spin by angling parts of their body?

I look at those videos and imagine my flesh going all flippy floppy in that wind. :) It looks like such fun and what a great break from the books!

And where are you this time Celia??

That looks like so much fun! A great way to take a break from studying. How do they control their up/down/backwards/forwards/spinning movements?

Absolutely tremendous and both will look back on this with warm thanks for you making it possible for them! I am hoping and praying both may have the opportunity for ‘the real thing’ down the track !!! And am certain the ‘Big Boy’ will be of immense moral support for ‘Small Man’ as to how to cope with a rather complicated year . . .

    Have a wonderful weekend Celia.

That must be good R&R for the mind – there’d be nothing else you could dwell upon would there?

This was something we had wanted to do together, too. Would have been so much fun! Just sad that we finished our NSW road trip without having to do this :). Maybe next time when Alesah comes back for another series :D

The very best thing to do when faced with constantly having to swat away indoors is to get out and do something physical. You are a very clever mum to be giving small man such an excellent and entirely appropriate gift :)

I can imagine it would be exhaausting as I expect if you don’t get your body balanced right you flip over? What a wonderful reward for his studies – and it wears him out too!

Me again… I am just wondering, can one get hurt doing that? I mean, how bad can one get hurt if some maneuver goes wrong?

      Here you go Sally:

Apparently it’s suitable for ages 3 to 103. The “floor” is actually a sprung surface and you go in with helmets and googles in case you fly into the wall. I’ve watched really little kids in there!

We have one of these in Dubai (of course!!) but I’m not into thrills and spills. Sounds exhausting!

    What fun!

It sounds like a perfect way for Small Man to relax and enjoy time away from studying. I haven’t booked the skydiving here yet but my future son in law had bought a session for my husband for Christmas to drive his choice of a Lamborghini, Ferrari, or Mercedes. Well of course we got there & my husband couldn’t decide so they had this offer where you could add on an additional few laps with a 2nd car. My husband chose the Laborhigni & Ferrari. He loved it!
