This month’s IN MY KITCHEN is now closed!
Please join us again in August! ♥
…..
In my kitchen…
…is a lime green Polartec cover for my insulated granny flask.
With the colder weather, I found the thermos wasn’t keeping water hot for quite as long, so I sewed a cosy for it. Since taking the photo, I’ve made a thick fleece coaster for it to sit on. It’s surprising what a difference a little insulation makes…
In my kitchen…
…is my first delivery from Country Meats Direct.
A few weeks ago, Murray put a flyer in my mailbox offering to sell grassfed Black Angus beef direct from his father’s property in the Hunter Valley. They only deliver to a limited area, and had recently expanded to include our postcode.
At $14.95 a kilo and sold in 10kg lots, it certainly isn’t the cheapest meat on offer, especially as the price is the same regardless of cut. But we’re keen to support Aussie farmers wherever we can – most of Pete’s uncles are or have been graziers, and we know how tough it can be for them to get a decent price for their stock.
On Saturday morning, Nick (another partner in the business) delivered my first order. I’d specifically requested cheaper cuts – we don’t eat a lot of steak, but I was happy to have some eye fillet in the mix. Here’s how the meat looked on delivery…
I spent a cheery hour or so repacking the meat into vacuum sealed bags for the freezer. We’re very good at stretching out meat, and this quantity will provide us with more than a dozen family dinners. This is what we plan to do with our purchase:
- 6 x 500g mince – each packet is sufficient for one dinner for four adults, either as pasta sauce, Mexican style mince, meatballs or keema.
- 6 x 500g brisket – this is a favourite Chinese stewing meat and again, each packet will feed the whole family, accompanied with rice or noodles and stir-fried vegetables.
- 1kg osso bucco – four large pieces, enough for one dinner.
- 1.3kg gravy beef – this will be used in a stew or curry. Leftovers might be turned into a pie the following day.
- 3 x 350g pieces of eye fillet – we’ll use these in our tender beef on rice, as well as in stir fries and noodles.
My order was a little under 10kg, so I was charged the reduced price of $140. If my maths is correct, each meal will work out at about $2.50 in meat per person…
I made braised beef brisket last night for dinner (post to follow) – the meat was flavoursome and tender…
In my kitchen…
…are treats from my recent visit to Eveleigh Markets. They include pink kiss potatoes, purchased from the Highland Gourmet Potato company…
…a generous bag of Swiss Brown mushrooms, picked the day before I bought them…
…Small Man’s favourite apple juice, grown and crushed in Thirlmere (about an hour out of Sydney) plus a kilo of freshly picked Pink Lady apples…
…and a bag of water cress from the Darling Mills stand, which we ate as salad the following day…
In my kitchen…
…is a very generous gift from the lovely Ella Dee – macadamias from Macksville, NSW…
In my kitchen…
…a surprise present from my friend Francesca of Almost Italian. The sarong will be put to good use as an outdoor tablecloth once the weather warms up, and the Balinese sawa wood board will be perfect for cheeses and antipasto…
In my kitchen…
…is yet more meat, bought a few weeks ago. I love Cape Grim beef, so when I saw this piece at Harris Farm Broadway, I put it in my trolley…
Following a Jamie Oliver recipe, we paired this with a mushroom sauce, baked potatoes and beans. The 500g steak was more than enough for the four of us…
Finally, in my kitchen…
…are baked treats from Kraving K – the latest Sydney cake sensation. Big Boy and Monkey Girl queued up for over an hour to buy these for us last Saturday. I love that they’re out and about seeking food adventures of their own…
. . . . .

Hi Celia, what a great way to buy your meat. I am always amazed that, with a little care, how little you can spend on food. So how were the baked treats? As good as they look?
Here is my monthly post. http://passionfruitgarden.com/2015/06/30/in-my-kitchen-july-2015/ Once again, all the best to you and your family for the month.
Amazing that meat extravaganza! I wish we had something similar going on here, which is too bad we don’t, living in KANSAS! meat capital of the US of A!
I am going to join your party this month, in a few days… so exciting!
My kitchen? HA, with temps consistently at 39 C and going to 41 C again on the weekend my kitchen Should be shut down!! But despite no air conditioning, I am doing bread and yesterday made a great beet green tart and making 2 Strawberry Rhubarb pies for the quilting group. Although I don’t eat meat or fish I applaud your choices of meat and how you use them. now, Kraving K,
that would be something to stand in line for :)
Love all of the fresh produce :) and that’s a LOT of meat!!!! But then, I took receipt of 10kg of chicken breast recently, my boys eat so much of it!
[…] what’s happening in your kitchen? If you’d like to join in on In My Kitchen this month, just pop over Celia’s Fig Jam and Lime Cordial blog for details, and jump into kitchen […]
Love all that delicious meat! Yummy. Mine is at http://miskcooks.com/2015/06/30/in-my-kitchen-july-2015/
That all looks yummy. In my kitchen this month is the usual mess – and a frequent batch of rising sourdough loaves.
What are those cakes? They look intriguing.
Making an insulated cover for your flask is such a little old granny thing to do :)
I’ll take your word for it, Granny Annie. :) The cakes were salted chocolate caramel and a passionfruit meringue concoction. I’m hard to please when it comes to bought cakes, but these were sublime!
Wow, love the meat. If I ever manage to get a big freezer in the garage I love the idea if buying a whole side of beef. What a great way to stock up on good quality meat and support local farmers. Those cakes look incredibly delicious as well. The next foodie generation lives on!
What a cute cozy! The meat looks nicely marbled with not too much fat. Nice cuts. You have some delicious looking foods in your kitchen! I had to google Kraving K to see what things they have to offer, even though I can’t buy any cakes from there. What beautiful things they make! Some looked too good to eat, just to admire. What dedication Big Boy and his girlfriend have to wait over an hour to bring some treats home. I couldn’t wait so long! I probably would have come back later when there was (no) long line. Lol!
I have to get moving. Today (June 30 here still) is my oldest son’s birthday. Enjoy your week!
My boys would probably ask to move in with you if they saw all that meat. My husband is a vegacquarian (so he and I have a mostly vegetarian diet, with fish once a week or so; I have meat when I go out for work dinners), yet the boys are rampant carnivores!! They would have a steak every night if I let them. Kraving K is my work colleagues wife – very talented and passionate and has found a gap in the market!
Comfort food mainly Ms Celia and anything that can cobble together a nutritious meal at a moments notice is de rigueur here in Chez Serendipity. Mostly soup and accompaniments because soup is a mighty melange of comfort, possibility, thrift and you can freeze it too! :)
I like your cozy. I don’t need it because we are having a heat wave here in France,
On my kitchen bench on Monday were gluten free baked goods I’d made for a local coffee shop: beef & cheese pies, chicken & sweetcorn tarts, toffee apple cinnamon cake, citrus tarts, banana bread, sticky date cake with toffee sauce and fruit/nut/seed raw bars topped with chocolate… Also a big pot of left over chicken curry and the remains of a mandarin syrup sponge, but not for long!
It’s wonderful how fresh and bright in the kitchen adds interest & inspiration to our lives. We found the same, a coaster and hat added our Hario coffee pot keeps the contents much warmer. And that’s an excellent idea for the using the sarong I was given for Christmas – I wear boardies but love tablecloths!
The HV meat looks great. Do you know where in the HV they are?
ED, I believe Murray’s dad’s farm is in Gresford. Thanks again for the gorgeous maccies, love! xxx
I’d rather pay more for good quality meat and we tend to buy in the same way as you. Beautiful gifts there, love that sarong! And how wonderful that your flask has a winter coat and your son and his gf are out seeking out food adventures…you taught them well, your job is done!
What a lovely load of swag. We have meat most meals but it doesn’t make up the bulk of the meal. Even a small roast chicken will do us for 4 meals and maybe a couple of sandwiches for lunch. 250g mince also makes the equivalent of 3 meals. It’s about portion control isn’t it? And getting in lots of fresh veggies. Last night I peeled a couple of potatoes to have with the chicken and decided to try something I’d seen in another IMK. I rinsed the peelings, placed them on a tray with a sprinkle of salt and spray of canola and let them crisp in the oven for a few minutes. A crunchy treat to go with the chicken. Anthony thought all his Christmases had come at once, So no more wasted peelings in our house now (though they were composed anyway). BTW – clever you with the thermal cover. A very practical idea.
We buy bulk meat on occasion, too. We get export quality beef and lamb at staff prices, which makes it a very cheap way to fill the freezer.
We buy bulk meat too – waiting on a lamb order and just thinking about ordering some pork. Love your tea cosy and those cakes! I’m not a big cake eater, but they look so pretty!
Very clever
I love your thermos cosy Celia! Good thinking 99..
We also buy bulk beef each 6 months or so after saving enough money. Our butcher breeds his own yearlings & transports them. And he cuts it & minces whatever we want right in front of us. No hidden dyes etc. So we support him. And having 4 growing males to feed we wise women tend to make meals go a long way! I have 2 Herb & mustard Lamb rolls ready to be cooked in my kitchen & jam & cream sponge cake too. That should suffice- for 10 mins! :)
Gosh, so many wonderful things in your kitchen this month! How do you find buying bulk meat – is there cuts that you love to use and some that stay longer in your freezer then you intended? I’ve created my July post here: http://goodfoodweek.blogspot.com.au/2015/07/life-whats-in-my-kitchen.html
I should have known your IMK would be posted on the morning of 1st :) !! Lovely foodie list: the meat part does make me realize as yet again that my ‘portion size’ may be too ample!! Love the mushrooms: have you tried growing your own from kits every winter: at the moment have white buttons, Swiss browns and oysters growing in the cool and dark laundry: quite, quite superior to the store bought ones . . .
The meat you bought looked like s great bargain. Osso buco is one of my favourite things to eat…must get some soon.
Your kitchen is a source of inspiration to all of us.
[…] My Kitchen is hosted by the lovely Celia at Fig Jam and Lime Cordial. Pop over and have a look at what’s going on in kitchens around the […]
I know it sounds like a big outlay to bulk buy like that, but once you break it all down it’s great value for money. And you know exactly where the beef has come from too. I love your cosy!! I still find it amazing that I can buy Cape Grim beef here too – I hope it’s not fake!!!!! My post is up http://www.plusatesix.com/2015/07/in-my-kitchen-july-2015/
I agree with Debra. I haven’t bought meat in bulk for years other than the American stuff I pick up at Costco for those homesick days. I need to get back on to that because i always knew exactly what I was going to cook and when and all ingredients were in the house. Back then I had hordes of teenagers that seemed to appear from nowhere so it made sense to plan ahead.
Good stuff in your kitchen this month. I hope to be a part of it soon. Not so dizzy today.
You have some lovely purchases. Great that you can get good quality meat delivered and then spend a cheery afternoon sorting it all for the freezer. I do love the look of the nuts, mushrooms and apple juice. You cooked a wonderful family meal with the flank steak xx
Oh my, all of that beautiful meat has my taste buds quivering! Trade you some salmon for some beef… Or maybe not. I’ll just dream of red meat instead. My IMK post is up and now I’m settling in for a late night session of IMK reading while wi-fi is fast (before the cruise ships arrive in Sitka). Huge thank yous for hosting this terrific event.
Those baked treats look great! Glad you have access to such high quality meat. That Jamie Oliver dish looks amazing. I want a bite!
As usual, Celia, your IMK post is full of inspiration. The tender beef brisket looks absolutely mouth watering. Can’t wait for the recipe!
I’m really impressed that you repacked all that meat – I would have bunged it in the freezer! I read that someone had made fleece covers for their camera lenses the other day to insulate them from knocks in their camera bag. I think this is a really good idea. My IMK post is up here : http://mycustardpie.com/2015/07/01/tastes-of-paradise-in-my-kitchen/ Lovely to join in this global gathering of kitchens as always.
You are so organised. I’d be too scared to have that amount of meat in my possession. I can’t keep track of what’s in my freezer at the best of times, and most of the time it only houses ice cream and vodka LOL! Lots of lovely goodies and inspiration in your kitchen as usual.
Here’s my IMK post.
http://milk-and.blogspot.com.au/2015/07/in-my-kitchen-july-2015.html
Hi Celia it’s Murray here from Country Meats Direct. Just wanted to say thank you for sharing your photos with us and also posting info about our meats on your site. It makes us all very happy to see our customers enjoying our produce! Kind regards, Murray.
I just love to read about the way you organise al of your meals Celia. no such luck here we just get what I have a whim to cook….which lately isn’t much. Do love you patisserie discovery well done.
With today’s temperatures I suggest you give up your day job Celia and concentrate on making human-sized Polartec covers, I’ll be your first customer.
I absolutely love everything in your kitchen Celia! Think I will have to borrow my sewing machine back from mom and make a wee warmer for my granny flask too – such a clever idea!
Have a beautiful day.
:-) Mandy xo
Carnivore heaven going on here! I also agree that buying great quality meat but less often is more economical, not to mention how much better it is! I think we seem to respect and become more cautious in how we use it and rarely have any waste. I love the idea of vacuum packing but my aversion to plastic just blocks me from trying it. Amazing looking cakes, look more like jewellery than edibles. Celia, I think you need to sew some eyes & ears on that thermo warmer and call it Kermit!
Mmmm, just wondering. Do frogs have ears? :)
That apple crush looks tasty! I think you are set for meat for awhile. Lovely baked treats, very fancy. I think I need a nice sarong to use as a table cloth outside too. Thanks for the peek into your kitchen.
Salivating at the picture of brisket beef on hor fun noodles. Must get myself some of that soon now that I’m home for the summer in NY. Looking forward to the recipe.
It’s such a good feeling to have packs of meat bagged and ready to freeze…. we do that with mince from Costco… I pack it into 500g bags and we always have some good quality minced beef to cook with. The watercress looks so fresh and delicious too. In case I don’t pop in as often as usual, am still overseas love. Hope all is well xxxxx

That sarong is beautiful!!
Those desserts look divine, but I’m most impressed with our meat prep. We buy and freeze a lot on sale too. Having a freezer in the garage helps. So does having hunter friends.
The sight of all that meat reminds me of meat packing day here!
Here’s my IMK post for July: http://chantillefleur.blogspot.com.au/2015/07/home-grown.html
A big hello from Melbourne. We buy our meat in bulk all the time… Although once every 6 months I think I need a new freezer… To cope, but manage to fit it in!
I love all the beautiful fresh produce in your kitchen! A new organic market has recently opened not far from where I live and it is so nice to get fresh produce and talk to the farmer who grew it!!! All your lovely gifts, people are so thoughtful! Thanks again for sharing. Liz xxx

Those baked treats look to die for. I’m very jealous right now. I love the fleece cosy you made. Such a great idea. This post has really cheered me up as I am feeling a bit low because my gran is very sick in hospital. She is 83 so fingers crossed she’ll be ok. Emma xx
Your meat shipment looks wonderful! I have been thinking about a bulk purchase of meat like that too. So many ways to stretch it out and the quality is worth it. I’ve never thought to use my sarong as a tablecloth … brilliant. :)
I do love pink lady apples! That polar cover for your thermos is really sweet too – great idea, and you’ll be able to match it in your fleece bag :D

Good morning Celia. Can another month really have passed by? That meat looks good and I love your thrifty and creative ideas for making it last. I am also a fan of putting leftover stews and curries into pies. Perfect time of the year for it! Those little cakes from Kraving K look like a work of art! Happy cooking to you.
Thank you for hosting my kitchen, my post is linked x
Hi Celia,
Thanks again for the peek into your kitchen and for hosting IMK at month. My IMK post is up (http://cookswithevie.com/2015/07/03/in-my-kitchen-july-2015/).
Lori
Loved the macnuts as it costs an arm and a leg over here. Delighted to have come across IMK!
My husband would like to move into your house, your meat order is his dream. We are moving to North Queensland in September so I’m trying to eat up everything in the freezer over the next couple of months otherwise I would be checking if that company delivered here too! You are very clever with your fleece cosies! Thank you for hosting IMK for another month. My post is up now too. http://www.boiledeggsandsoldiers.com/2015/07/in-my-kitchen-july-2015/
I love the idea of sarongs as tablecloths – would probably be about the right size for my table. Some lovely presents there and I am feeling like your thermos that in this weather I am needing a bit more insulation.
Here is my IMK post http://gggiraffe.blogspot.com.au/2015/07/in-my-kitchen-july-2015.html
Hi there Celia. I find there is something therapeutic about portioning meat, and working out what meals to produce with it. Your kraving k treats look quite sensational!
Happy IMK for July. My post is up:
http://makeitbakeitsnapit.blogspot.com.au/2015/07/in-my-kitchen-july-2015.html
I managed to get some brisket this week as well. I think the meat is a bargain and you are supporting local farms which is great :)
Hi Celia, in my kitchen I had chestnuts that I bought and cooked as per your brilliant instructions to give to mum and dad. Found a store in Leichhardt that we drive past when going to my parents and they sell 1kg bags for $3.99! Mum and dad are so pleased :) Love your thermos cosy, when my nephew was little he went to a cafe that served boiled eggs with little fleece hats and he loved them so I made a couple for him and myself :) Love Eveleigh markets, really enjoy meeting the producers and supporting them.

Love the sarong as a tablecloth, it’s a traditional pattern isn’t it? And, so wise to purchase meat from a good source in bulk. You had me salivating on that brisket with the rice noodles.

I love the thermos cosy! I’m inspired to make one for myself now too :)
Mr Fork is impressed with your meat haul. I have a friend who works in admin at a meat processing plant here… we buy our meat through her, and Mr Fork tells me it’s SO MUCH better than supermarket meat and he can practically taste the grass the cows have eaten, it is that fresh (it’s a few days old and we have to turn it periodically in the fridge before it can be eaten).
Love those macadamia nuts! So many yummy possibilities come to mind (although I’d probably eat them as is!). Here is my July post: http://www.withafork.com/2015/07/whats-in-my-kitchen-july-2015.html
Celia everyone who complains about the cost of food should take a leaf out of your book. You are the master of stretching your $$$. This Granny could do with a Polartec cover right now. have a great month xx
Yay! That’s a lot of meat. The Polartec cover is really helpful and pretty. I drink a lot of tea, too. I just use electric water heater for my teas. I drink about 7 cups a day. As always, thanks for hosting IMK and it’s always fun to take a peek. Have a fab day. :).xx
Pink kiss potatoes? What a fabulous name. And I’m very interested to hear about Monkey Girl, especially is she finds such delectable patisserie ;-) Hoping to upload another In My Kitchen tomorrow.
Your posts always stir memories for me. My parents always buy beef in bulk, and I have images in my mind of dad coming home with boxes and boxes of beef, that then all needed to be repackaged into smaller lots.
I’m jealous of your potatoes. We only get two or three varieties here, and none of them are that great.
My post is now up: http://thecookspyjamas.com/in-my-kitchen-july-2015/
My post is up – http://tinandthyme.uk/2015/07/in-my-kitchen-july-2015/
Celia , all that meat looks great, such potential for so many great meals and time around the table. I am loving that sarong and board. Here is my post for July. Thanks. https://thebutlersgoodlife.wordpress.com/2015/07/09/in-my-kitchen-july/
That’s great that you can buy meat that way & especially if you’re supporting local businesses. You’re really wonderful about that & I applaud you. I forget the exact number but I was astonished listening to an interview where they were saying that in the US, something like over 80 small farms PER DAY are going away! Everything is big agra here and I don’t like how Monsanto seems to be taking over everything we eat.
You have been on a sewing kick I see – nice idea to use the fleece for the cosy.
That sarong is absolutely stunning! What wonderful friends you have & what wonderful kids to stand in a line for those sweets.
Hi Celia, #IMK just keeps growing and growing doesn’t it! Lovely meeting lots of new foodies with great inspiration in their kitchens. I’m just loving your Cape Grim steak – looks delicious! I love a good steak, scotch fillet is my favourite. It’s lovely to be a part of such a wonderful community & I promise I’ll get to everyone this month :) Thanks for a great party Celia, I just love it

Hi Celia, it’s so great to support local farmers and the brisket look tasty. I love the idea of your thermos cozy and that green is such a cheery spring color! :)
I just wanted to mention a little problem with spam filters on my fellow IMK’s blogs, apparently most of my comments from previous months have been stuck in spam because the filters were too strong. I just figured I’d let them know because if it’s happening to me I’m sure it’s happening to other legitimate commenters, so please check your spam folders.
Here is my IMK: http://cookingforkishore.blogspot.com/2015/07/in-my-kitchen-july-2015.html
Celia, that’s a great idea to set your carafe on a thick coaster, too! Very smart. Your freezer prepped beef is evidence of the joy of planning ahead and satisfaction in making the most of every morsel. Love it! I have a similar post-grocery-shopping routine and it takes awhile to “break everything down” but sooooo worth the time involved.
I’m also glad that Emily brought up the Spam issue — some of my comments on previous IMK posts “disappeared” too and I will check my own Spam file to make sure I’m not missing anybody! Thanks so much for hostessing this — will rejoin you next month. xo
Thanks for telling me that Kim, I was starting to worry I was the only one! :)
Emily, I checked my site — no IMK “Spammers”, whew! It’s frustrating when you take time to comment (or can’t get through “log in” hoops to leave one) — half the fun is responding to the wonders in everyone’s kitchens. :) You’re not alone!
[…] As always I’m linking up with Celia for IMK. […]
I love the look of all that meat Celia, but I think you must be more disciplined that me perhaps, as when I’ve tried buying in bulk from local producers before I always find bits left sitting in the corner of the freezer, and I can’t stand wasting all their effort so tend to avoid bulk purchases these days :(
I also have to apologise for my late IMK post as we’re just back from my parents who live in a bit of an internet black hole, so I saved posting till we returned as I didn’t want it all to disappear like Francesca’s !

ooh those cakes look amazing! Here’s my post for the month .) http://atravellingcook.com/2015/07/in-my-kitchen.html
Your kitchen this month is a carnivore’s dream, Celia! Love the look of the pastries from Kraving K.
Such a wintery IMK post! I just tasted some of those pastries recently, they are lovely!
It’s fun to see the opposite season in your kitchen. I especially like the bright green fleece cozy. And that new bakery looks like it will inspire you. Have a great month!
