In My Kitchen, April 2016

April 1, 2016 by Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

In my kitchen…

…are three tiny Swarovski angels, hanging from my plate rack. They twinkle cheerfully at me as I’m washing up…

imk0416b

. . . . .

In my kitchen…

…is one of this year’s dark chocolate Easter eggs. I’m pretty happy with how they turned out…

imk0416c

. . . . .

In my kitchen…

…is a tinned peach tea cake, baked for my mum. It’s her favourite!

imk0416d

. . . . .

In my kitchen…

…is a bottle of 39 year old Portuguese vintage port, opened as a mid-week treat…

imk0416e

. . . . .

In my kitchen…

…there is always a Römertopf, filled here with ingredients to make venison and barley stoup…

imk0416g

The end result after several hours of cooking was rich, thick and filling…

imk0416f

. . . . .

In my kitchen…

…is a box of blooms from Fresh Flowers, a gift from my sister Cynthia. What’s fabulous about the photo below is that it was taken a week after delivery – the flowers from this company always outlast any others I receive…

imk0416h

. . . . .

In my kitchen…

…is a gift from my friend Tezza, a book full of labels, tags, cards and other paper treats, all food themed…

. . . . .

Finally, in my kitchen…

…is me! Wearing the new cotton poncho that Maude crocheted for my birthday last month…

. . . . .

Tell me, what’s happening in your kitchen?

If you’d like to write an In My Kitchen post, please do so by the 10th April and send your link to Maureen at The Orgasmic Chef. Thanks for hosting Maureen! x

Oh, I love those flowers! Beautiful, and the color of your poncho, my favorite, love purple!

I am joining in, my post should go live in a few hours…. after all, it’s already April in Australia!

  2. on April 1, 2016 at 12:59 am Manuela

The flowers are beautiful. Love the poncho. The Easter egg looks delicious. So nice and dark and glossy. Looks nicer than a store bought egg! I think you could open a home based business selling chocolates. Yours always look amazing.

Lots of good things happening in your kitchen!

  4. on April 1, 2016 at 4:00 am Joanne Vidal

Would love to join In My Kitchen BUT at the moment Bruce , the builder, is in my kitchen, putting in my new kitchen. We rebuilt the house three years ago, ran out of money and reinstalled the old kitchen temporarily. Now at last and thanks in large part to a gift from my brother, the new kitchen is on its way! Yippee! I am soooo excited.

In my kitchen the sourdough starter is beginning to behave with more enthusiasm now it’s warmer. There have been hot cross buns but sadly they are no more. More to be made very soon 😃

Ooh orchids and a poncho (and they match too)…my life would be complete. I have a yearning for stoup so before I go to bed I’m going to take some stewing steak out of the freezer and I will pop it in my slow cooker tomorrow morning ☺

  7. on April 1, 2016 at 6:46 am fergie51

Why oh why did I give my Römertopf away years ago? That looks so hearty! Enjoy that port :)

  8. on April 1, 2016 at 7:28 am lambsearsandhoney

Wow – that Romertopf is certainly full – and what a gorgeous looking soup you’ve made in it. Yum!

  9. on April 1, 2016 at 8:27 am Susan

Flowers and PORT the best! Salute!

  10. on April 1, 2016 at 8:34 am Platanos, Mangoes and Me!

I always enjoy these posts. I looked for the book on Amazon and could, not find it. All the best to you and yours.

The book of labels and tags is cute – I can imagine you’ll get a lot of use out of that. And as for that venison and barley stoup – it’s gorgeous and I bet it’s impossible to stop yourself from going back for a taste test!

I saw those books of stickers too but thought ‘Walk away. WALK AWAY. How many stickers and bits of paper do you need?’ Many apparently as whilst I didn’t buy this book, I bought something similar a few days later at IKEA. Sigh…. My mum did a Romertopf leg of lamb for Easter. She’s a convert!

Honestly, I could set my appointments book by your IMK!! Whatever the circumstances, you never miss the first!! OK: Pretty please – a helping of the venison and barley stoup for my lunch!! And I love that smile peeping up above that beautiful gift poncho :D !!

Happy belated Birthday to you, Cecilia, wish you the most happy, healthy and creative year.

Absolutely love your IMK posts Celia. Guaranteed to always have something delicious and featuring love filled gifts.
    Have a beautiful April.

Everything in your kitchen is beautiful! You have the most unique things every single month. I struggle to keep up. :)

  17. on April 1, 2016 at 5:35 pm mae

Your Swarovski angels look very inspiring. I’m awed by a company that makes both jewelry and decorative items AND the best optical equipment like telescopes. Your “tinned peach cake” sounds good — I applaud you for saying where the peaches are from (once I was served tinned peach cake in peach season: disappointment).

My IMK is also ready here:

wow what a gorgeous poncho. i haven’t had one since i was a child but i think we should bring them back into fashion. so useful and pretty. love the angels and the flowers and your dark choc egg looks really tasty and beautiful.

  19. on April 1, 2016 at 8:47 pm Lina

Mm mm I can practically taste that Port with some dark chocolate! Purple suits you nicely Celia xx

  20. on April 1, 2016 at 8:54 pm Zena

Exquisite birthday Shawl! Ooh on that bottle of port. Your handmade angels are so beautiful.

  21. on April 1, 2016 at 10:20 pm Anne Wheaton

Like the video Celia. And the book too. Very useful.

  22. on April 1, 2016 at 10:25 pm Gretchen

What a beautiful chocolate egg. My boys weren’t nearly so lucky, maybe next year I will attempt to make something from scratch for Easter. Your soup looks quite delicious. The book,of stickers and labels looks like something I could really get into, danger zone for me!

  23. on April 2, 2016 at 4:10 pm Lisa

Love those angels! And I love the idea of stoup too. I’m a firm believer in thick hearty soups. That port must taste amazing, definitely a lovely treat – perfect accompaniment to Easter chocolate remains, perhaps? I also have that book, it’s full of so many lovely food themed goodies! Lx

  24. on April 2, 2016 at 4:38 pm Joanne Kurosawa

Everything looks lovely; the poncho looks good on you. Is it possible to share the peach tea cake recipe? It looks yummy!

    • on April 2, 2016 at 4:48 pm Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Thanks Joanne! There’s a link to the peach cake recipe in the post above!

  25. on April 2, 2016 at 5:30 pm shaheen

I haven’t had any Easter eggs this year, other than those mini ones offered at work. The poncho is fab,I am off to check out your mums Tinned Peach cake and make it as I have some in the kitchen cupboards, just may have to nip out to get some cream!.

  26. on April 2, 2016 at 10:52 pm thesnowwoman

Lovely bright flowers and as always delicious looking food!

  27. on April 4, 2016 at 3:42 pm Veganopoulous

ooooh that port!!! Well done on the midweek treat!

  28. on April 5, 2016 at 12:23 am laurasmess

Just lovely. The poncho looks gorgeous on you and all of your cooking is absolutely drool-worthy (particularly that glossy easter egg and the peach tea cake!). Happy April! x

  29. on April 5, 2016 at 1:37 am Eva Taylor

That barley soup looks wonderful, we had about 10cm of snow last night so I’m craving warm hearty soups like that. Gorgeous poncho.

  30. on April 5, 2016 at 1:32 pm Tes

Your “In my Kitchen” post is addictive :) I love the flowers. They are so colorful and gorgeous.

  31. on April 5, 2016 at 7:34 pm Kate and the crew

    Hello Celia,
Found your very delightful blog quite by accident today, something about chooks….
I have since spent my spare moments between cooking, (mushroom arancini, and orange and almond cake) and watering the garden, perusing your interesting entries which caught my attention. Plenty of information and camaraderie on this blog!
    Hugs from Adelaide

  32. on April 5, 2016 at 8:41 pm Sally

Would love to get my hands on some decent venison – love what you’ve done with it. Belated happy birthday (if I haven’t said so already – mind increasingly like a sieve).

  33. on April 5, 2016 at 9:11 pm My Kitchen Stories

Great coloured Poncho, how lovely. The Easter egg looks so shiny and dark. How gorgeous are your flowers too?

  34. on April 6, 2016 at 8:13 am Francesca

There’s that wonderful peach cake again- I meant to make that ages ago and now it’s time. Another way to use the romertopf- must give it a go now that the weather has finally changed.

  35. on April 7, 2016 at 7:12 am hotlyspiced

That certainly is a very old bottle of port. Your barley and venison stew looks really hearty and I’m really impressed with your dark chocolate Easter eggs xx

  36. on April 7, 2016 at 2:33 pm Liz - Good Things

Is it really April already?! Loving those angels, darling… and your poncho too. xx

  37. on April 8, 2016 at 3:01 pm Vicki @ Boiled Eggs and Soldiers

Always such interesting things in your kitchen Celia. Your stew looks perfect especially on a day like today!

  38. on April 11, 2016 at 10:21 am Maureen | Orgasmic Chef

I’m going to your mother’s house and wait for that tinned peach cake. Recipe?

Your angels are gorgeous and that poncho is so special. Lucky you!
