Imperial Social Distancing Hat

May 1, 2020 by Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

This is what my poor husband woke up to yesterday morning.

An excited wife in a paper hat.

He rubbed his eyes, looked at me, and said.. “I have no words..”

. . . . .

It all started the day before when I read this tweet. There’s not a lot about the COVID-19 crisis that’s bringing me joy, but these photos quite literally gave me life…

My sister subsequently sent me the original article – here’s the link if you’d like to read it.

. . . . .

The following morning, finding myself awake yet again at 5am, I made an imperial social distancing hat from a fettuccine box and some cardboard leftover from an old school project on the solar system that one of the kids did in Year Five (lockdowns are when we quarter hoarders really come into our own). Then I wrapped it all in rescued paper from Reverse Garbage.

Tah-dah! I’m ready for the Imperial Court now!

It works a bit too well, as I can’t fit through the internal doorways in our house with it on.

Mind you, going through doorways sideways might be the new norm if quarantine eating keeps going the way it is. My darling sister sent me this as well, bless her socks…

So here I am, in my imperial social distancing hat, wishing you all a happy day! Stay safe, folks! ♥

Save the hat for when you are presented to the Queen at the Royal Palace Love it! You made me smile ! That’s a good thing!

Oh Celia, I love it. Made me giggle this morning.

Love it! I’d really like to see how it worked in a supermarket… You’d get the aisle to yourself (“not messing with that hat, no way”), and anyone who hadn’t already seen you coming would get a smack round the back of the head with one of your ‘rotors’ if they came too close. It’s a delightful piece of headwear and I dare you to wear it out of doors….

Oh! I double dare you Celia 😂
(You do know she’d do that don’t you?)

I live in hope! Photographic evidence would be required, of course….

Ladies, ladies…the odds of me ever doing anything on a dare are non-existent. You haven’t got a hope. 🤣

I defy anyone to read this post without a smile on their face. Thank you just what I needed. Reminded me of the Harry Potter sorting hat too.

    Interesting idea though.

So so funny!!!! Thanks for the laugh today. My daughter is a teacher, I’m sure she’ll also love the classroom photos. Reminds me of a box hat I received for Mother’s Day many years ago when my big girl was at kinder. 🤣🤣🤣

    Absolutely love the hat!
As an aside you might want to check this article out regarding quarantine and body weight jokes. Having followed your blog for a long time I know that you are quite aware of and sensitive to social justice issues and will hopefully be open to the information included: https://www.allure.com/story/covid-19-weight-gain-jokes-eating-disorders
    Cheers, Laura

    Brilliant hat.

  19. on May 1, 2020 at 5:01 pm Pauline

Great hat. It’s amazing you can be so creative so early in the morning. Of course that’s why it’s called a pandemic. Very clever. Best wishes, Pauline

Be that on earth. If even drop you my top hat for that 😁

    • on May 1, 2020 at 5:22 pm Kim

That originally said ‘best hat’ but Google thought better of it 🙄
