In my kitchen…

…is a bag of Syrian za’atar.  The gentleman in the Arabic nut and spice store convinced me that it was better than the Jordanian product I normally buy, and I couldn’t resist the artistic presentation – reminiscent of the coloured sand in glass bottles that were all the rage when I was a child…

In my kitchen…

…is a bottle of Canadian maple syrup, a gift from our friends Kevin and Carol who were over there for a holiday a couple of months ago…

In my kitchen…

…are three loaves of sourdough fruit bread, made to a new formula I’ve been playing with – a variation on the one I made last year.

The dough has 500g of fruit to the 1kg of flour (800g flour/100g rye/100g spelt) and contains a mixture of dried cranberries, Turkish figs, sultanas, currants, golden raisins and the wonderful candied peel I found at Harkola last Christmas…

The peel gives the bread a festive fruit cake touch, although I didn’t make my own like Heidi does

In my kitchen…

…is a plate of greens from the garden, including basil, Italian parsley, purslane and sorrel..

In my kitchen…

…is proof positive that my friend Marty loves me!  He spent six months sourcing this kopi luwak as a surprise for me.  The coffee beans are a rare delicacy – eaten and then shat out by civet cats, whose digestive processes ferment the beans (which come out whole), resulting in an incredibly smooth and mellow coffee…

I took a handful to Manny, the world’s best barista, and he ground  the beans and made them up for us to taste.  It was a sublime and perfect way to spend an easy afternoon…

…is a copy of Zen and the Art of Raising Chickens, a gift from my lovely friend Becca, the InTolerant Chef

In my kitchen…

…is a bag of dark malt flour, a recent discovery from Harkola.  I used a teaspoon in yesterday’s sourdough – it gave the white bakers’ flour a creamy grey tone and added a delicious nuttiness to the finished loaf…

In my kitchen…

…are cornmeal English muffins, made to a modified Dan Lepard recipe.  On Joanna’s advice, I reduced the water in the recipe from 425ml to 300ml.  The slightly drier dough cut well and held its shape in the frying pan…

We ate them with Joy’s delicious plum jam…

…which she made with plums harvested from her dad’s farm…

In my kitchen…

…are treasures from Chefs’ Warehouse.  These 10cm/4″ crumpet rings were calling to me…

…as were these absolutely gorgeous terracotta dishes.  I already had the larger version, and wanted a couple of smaller ones to complete the set.  The little one measures 15cm/6″ in diameter and cost just $5.95.  The dishes are oven safe and clean up perfectly in the dishwasher…

In my kitchen…

…are pots of green apples, being turned into pectin for this year’s jam making.  The apples are from Christina’s dad Lloyd, who was kind enough to give us enough for dozens of jars of pectin, along with several kilos of gorgeous crabapples for jelly!

In my kitchen…

…is a tin of Turkish apple tea.  I’ve been drinking this sweet tangy tea at Turkish restaurants over the past few months, and couldn’t resist buying some for home…

In my kitchen…

…is a basket of green figs from our new neighbour Marco, whose trees are laden and groaning with fruit!

In my kitchen…

…are gifts from my lovely friends and fellow bloggers, Deb of Bagni di Lucca and Roz of Taste Travel.  Deb sewed this beautiful bag for me (it’s her own design, and she even matched the card to it!) and Roz sent me her vintage Römertopf cookbook…

In my kitchen…

…are homemade marshmallows, and cranberry and toasted almond rocky road, made with the aforementioned marshmallows and Callebaut 811 chocolate…

In my kitchen…

…are brochures from a new installation at the Art Gallery of NSW.  The terracotta warriors were created over 2000 years ago under the realm of China’s first emperor.  For anyone in or visiting Sydney in the next couple of months, the exhibition will be on display until March 13 and is well worth a visit…

In my kitchen…

…are a couple of bulbs of roasted garlic – the large one is from Di and Ian, and the little one was grown in our backyard.  After this photo was taken, the pulp was squeezed out into a bowl, mixed with a little salt and covered with oil – the roasting turned the garlic mild and mellow, perfect for smearing on toast and meats (thanks to clever Joanna for this wonderful suggestion!)…

…is a stick of butter, one of two made from more than half a litre of old heavy cream leftover from Christmas…

In my kitchen…

…is a box of golden chocolate chip cookies, baked for me by Big Boy’s best mate Tim. He dropped them over, still warm from the oven, so I’ve laid them out on a rack to cool.  I can’t tell you how happy I was to receive these!

In my kitchen…

…are jars of Pete’s latest jams – cherry and strawberry, and mango and lilly pilly…

In my kitchen…

…are treasures from our first visit to Alfalfa House in Enmore. Below are coral rice and purple jasmine rice, both from Thailand, organic peppermint tea from Egypt…

…organic maple syrup from Canada and organic rapadura sugar from Columbia. The rapadura is amazingly flavoured – it’s made from dehyrated unrefined sugar cane juice…

In my kitchen…

…is a box of cherries, a gift to Small Man from his Great Aunt Liz, who purchased them at the farm door in Young on their way to Sydney. The lighter coloured variety are Eagles; the darker ones are the more traditional Supremes.  Both are superb, despite 2010 being a difficult season due to heavy rainfalls in the region.

In my kitchen…

…is a bag of the most amazing salt pyramids I’ve ever seen –  a gift from our ever generous friend Moo.  The crystals are huge!

In my kitchen…

…is a bowl of garden hodge-podge – today’s lunch. New potatoes, carrots, cavolo nero, tomatoes and parsley from our backyard were combined with chorizo sausage, rosemarino pasta (so called because the shape resembles rosemary leaves) and tinned lentils, finished with chopped preserved lime.  Incredibly tasty, even though it was simply cooked in water without any added seasonings!

In my kitchen…

…are bonbonnieres from the Jackhammer’s christening, for which the wee man wore a shiny white Elvis suit and cap.  Truly, I have the coolest friends…

In my kitchen…

…are six logs of freezer shortbread cookie dough, ready for last minute baking and gifts…

In my kitchen…

…are a bag of blueberry and oat cookies, a gift from Brydie, who accompanied them with the most gorgeous hand-drawn chicken card!

In my kitchen…

…is a gift from Iris, Andrea’s mother.  Every year she bakes us one of her pan de pascua, traditional Chilean Christmas cake.  She’s very secretive about her recipe, and rightly so, as it’s delicious!  I love that my friends’ parents feel the need to feed us – we had mince pies from Nic’s mum recently as well..

In my kitchen…

…is a batch of sourdough spelt epi. They’ll be served with extra virgin olive oil and homemade dukkahEpi are easy to make (there are step by step instructions here), and they never fail to impress…

In my kitchen…

…are our very first new potatoes!  The plants aren’t ready to be harvested yet, but we’ve been bandicooting (pinching new potatoes from just under the soil at the top of the mound).  They’ve grown surprisingly quickly – we only planted our first batch of potatoes in late August.  Below are a large red norland, a few King Edwards and our first baby bintje…

In my kitchen…

…is today’s harvest of beans.  We’re picking this amount every other day at the moment, and often eating them raw…

In my kitchen…

…is a homemade bug catcher.  A wineglass half-filled with cider vinegar or white wine vinegar is irresistible to annoying little fruit flies, and by adding a drop or two of dishwashing detergent to the mix, the bugs aren’t able to fly out again once they’ve dropped in for a drink…

In my kitchen…

…are bread making treasures!  Lovely Wendy went hunting for proving baskets for me in Hong Kong, ever generous Christine sent me one of her homemade bread bags, and my dear friend Joanna organised a Danish dough whisk to be sent to me from the UK (I’ve been brandishing it like a magic wand!)…

In my kitchen…

…are the salt holder and egg beater of  Mrs M, our beloved neighbour who passed away in July. I think of her every time I use them…

In my kitchen…

…is a tray of supernatural brownies – my default recipe whenever I need a large quantity of baked treats in a hurry…

In my kitchen…

…are the first fruits from our supposedly non-fruiting prunus!  I took these photos for Heidi in August.  At the time our tree was covered in blossoms…

In the eighteen years it’s been growing, our prunus has never fruited properly – we’ve had the occasional tiny orb which fell off, but never anything worth picking.

This year we were surprised to see quite a few medium sized plums – they were dropping off the tree before they were ripe, so we collected all we could reach – about 450g (1lb) in total.

Not surprisingly, the plums weren’t great eating, but loathe to waste them, we submerged them in vodka and brandy with sugar.  Hopefully we’ll end up with a drinkable plum brandy in a few months’ time!
