Fish Lanterns

February 10, 2011 by Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Final lantern post, I promise!

I wasn’t going to make any more, but couldn’t resist these two YouTube tutorials.  Plus we were in the middle of a 40C heatwave in Sydney last week, and it was really too hot to cook or go out!

The second tutorial is in Cantonese (I think), which I don’t understand, but the instructions were easy to follow nonetheless.  I’m posting them here, so that I can find them again next year!

Love all your beautiful lanterns Celia! Next time I’m in a Chinese store I’ll look for some of the papers and get practising :)

Jo, if I can talk my darling sister into sending me a stack of wrappers, I’ll post some on to you for next year! :)

Those lanterns look very relaxing to make. I wonder if you could make some paper fans … mind you, with those temps I am not sure they would really work!

    • on February 10, 2011 at 6:48 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Gill, actually there are some very nice paper fan patterns made from the wrappers, but they’re ornamental. Don’t know if they’d stand up to the waving required to make a difference in 40C temps! :)

These are just beautiful! More! More! I think you should post one every day!

Maz, the boys have made me stop. I have them hanging in just about every doorway, and everyone has to duck to get into a room…hahaha

On my next life, I will have all your skills!

    (seriously)

Ha! This from the woman who can bake amazing sourdough in a toaster oven!!!! :)

    I love these.
I like fish that hang around the house.
I used to carry a plastic goldfish in my raincoat pocket to discourage the doldrums, but after a while it disappeared.
These are really cute- but I have a feeling they would disappear as well.
Did I mention that my husband DOES NOT like fish?

    • on February 10, 2011 at 9:13 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Heidi, that’s funny – is he scared of fish? :)

Celia these are gorgeous. I think you will have me hooked. Excuse the pun.

LJ, thank you! They were great fun to make! :)

We’ve just finished making lanterns of all sizes, but we use coloured paper instead. They look lovely hanging from the ceiling. They were so simple the boys wanted to make more. I promised them the star and maybe fish next, but I don’t know the size of the papers that are used to make them. Would any size of paper work?

Thanks, the boys are eager to try something new. When they get going we’ll have a house full of fish, lanterns and stars!

    • on February 10, 2011 at 9:15 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Manuela, all the lanterns are traditionally made with red packet envelopes (“ang pow”). The ones used in the lanterns I’ve made have all been rectangular – although they vary in size a bit (the ones in the first fish video are longer than normal ones and some of them are cut down to size – there are instructions with dimensions on the youtube clip). Have fun!

    Fish look fab!!

I am about to embark on a jam & chutney making session using some of your recipies. Can you advise where I can buy nice jars to store them in so that I can also give them away as gifts?

    • on February 10, 2011 at 9:17 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Bella, thank you, have fun with jam making! We buy our jars in bulk from Plasdene (www.plasdene.com.au) – we’ve found that to be the cheapest option. Do hunt around – sometimes the jars can cost waaay more than the jams that go in them! :)

It’s gorgeous. I’m with you on not wanting to cook in the heat wave. I was in Newcastle for the weekend and I’ve never been so hot in my life!

So very, very cute Celia! I’m having an asian themed party this year, maybe I could make a heap to decorate the hall/ restaurant? Thanks for including the tutorial too.

  16. on February 11, 2011 at 7:42 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Claire, thank you! Hasn’t this weather been weird!!

Mrs Bok, so happy you enjoyed them! Kong Hee Fatt Choy! :)

Mandy, you’re so sweet, thank you! :)

Gina, thank you! Hope you get a chance to try making some!

Lorraine, you have to harness your inner Chinese and give these a go! Hahahaha

Chef, I think they’d make great decorations! Try visiting some of the Chinese banks in town and see if they’ll give you some red envelope wrappers – they might have some leftover!

    Sophie, thank you! :)

Another excellent resource dear Celia :) Your posts turn out to be a great reference for me too, you’ve become our ‘go to’ site to find all sorts of things & knowing how to fold these lanterns just adds to the collection. Thanks Lovely…., just the thing when you want to do an Asian themed ‘do’ :)

    • on February 13, 2011 at 10:44 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial
