Gong Xi Fa Cai!
Happy Chinese New Year!
Wishing you all a happy and prosperous Year of the Horse!
. . . . .
In my kitchen…
…are chocolate for Chinese New Year…
In my kitchen…
…are chocolate sablés. I made a double batch of dough before Christmas and stashed one roll in the freezer. It defrosted and baked up perfectly…
In my kitchen…
…is Sarawak pepper – black, white and ground white – a gift from my Pa Ku (my mother’s older brother)…
In my kitchen…
…is our newest chocolate cake recipe, baked as a sheet cake. It took a double batch of the batter and icing to fill our large Nordic Ware baking tray…
The finished cake wasn’t very deep, but there was plenty to share around. It’s wonderful that a recipe which is so delicious and easy to make is also so flexible – the original was baked in a round 20cm/8″ tin, Pam baked them as cupcakes, and I’ve made them as a loaf cake and now a sheet cake…
In my kitchen…
…is a gift from my darling friend Tania. It’s a bottle of Austrian pumpkin seed oil, and it’s divine…
It isn’t possible to discern from the photo, but the oil is actually a very dark avocado green…
In my kitchen…
…is my first attempt at crispy amaretti cookies. I haven’t got the recipe quite right yet, but they do taste quite good. They’re made with egg whites, and I turned the leftover yolks into microwave custard. The boys have been eating the two together for dessert…
In my kitchen…
…is a gift from lovely Joanne – I admired her shortbread mould, and the next thing I knew, she’d very kindly sent me one…
In my kitchen…
…is a rolled crust, deep dish garden pizza. I used our regular pizza dough and pleated the edge before adding the toppings. It’s filled with tomato passata, mozzarella cheese, finely sliced onion and black olives, as well as grilled slices of tromboncino, eggplant and snake beans from the garden…
We don’t usually make topping-heavy pizzas, so this made for a nice change…
In my kitchen…
…is yet another mutant squash. We already have the butternut trombie (which we love), and we planted two “proper” tromboncino seedlings, but the only one that’s doing well grew this giant fruit. I’m not complaining though, as I’m sure it will be delicious…
. . . . .

The sable looks delicious and i am keen on those exotic peppers too.
Francesca, they’re regular black and white pepper corns, but they’re grown in Sarawak in Malaysia. I think they’re delicious, and was very grateful, as I’m always running out of pepper here! :)
Hi Celia, I have just loaded the IMK post for this month. It has been a cathartic experience. Many thnaks, F
Happy Chinese New Year to you Celia.
You always have so many fabulous things to share with us in your kitchen and I think it is high time I tried your chocolate cake recipe, I shall have to turn it into cupcakes though, like Pam.
Have a happy weekend.
:-) Mandy xo
PS. I will post my IMK post on Tuesday the 4th.
Look forward to it, darling Mandy! Hope you’re having a great weekend too!
Happy New Year. I will be celebrating this evening after work. Hope your Year of the Wooden Horse is spectacular. :D
Thank you! Hope it’s a fabulous year for all of us!
Love those chocolate sable cookies- I’m making some this week!
Happy New Year !
And you have so much deliciousness in your kitchen this month, Celia- I’ll try to do a post next week!
Heidi, I love your posts, can’t wait to see what’s happening in your kitchen this month! xx
Happy New Year and thanks for some more wonderful recipes. Pizza and chocolate – mmmm
Thank you! The pizza was particularly fine, since it came almost entirely from our garden! :)
Happy New Year Celia. Love your IMK post! Mine will be done on Monday. Have a super weekend :)
Look forward to it, Tandy! I was pleased to hear that Cordelia survived her stay in the freezer so well – that’s great news! :)
Happy New Year!
Chocolate cake and pizza…yum! Pumpkin seed oil is apparently very healthy. Do you use it raw in salads? The bottle is even labelled in German!
My kitchen is very plain and simple compared to yours!
Manuela, my kitchen is very plain too – this is a month’s worth of interesting things! :) Yes, the pumpkin seed oil goes raw on salads, but I’ve actually been using it in my focaccia as well. It’s divine! :)
Oh my Celia, your kitchen never fails to delight. Your Chinese chocolates are so cute, the sables look delicious and I am off to check out your latest chocolate cake. But most of all I’m wishing I had that pizza in front of me – right now.
I have some of the pumpkin seed oil, but keep forgetting to use it.
Happy New Year
Choc, thank you! The pumpkin seed oil is sooo good, we’ve been doing everything from dipping bread into it to pouring it over salads. The colour is particularly amazing – it’s incredibly green. The pizza was great – we actually griddled the snake beans, and they had an amazing flavour!
Happy Chinese new year Celia :)
With a bit of luck I will be joining in the fun this month with my first in my kitchen post :)
I really look forward to all the beautiful post because they are full of ideas and ingredients that are new to me :)
Ooh Sawsan, that sounds great, please let me know if you get a post written before the 10th! You’ll be pleased to know my ma’moul moulds got a good workout over Christmas, making chocolates! :)
I do love the amount of chocolate in your kitchen Celia, how tempting. Everything looks yummy though and you’re reminding me of a deep crust pizza my Mum used to make us – love your version, how delicious with all those lovely squash from the garden. And happy new year! I’ve just been looking for a good recipe for Chinese dumplings, do you have any ideas? My daughter has been raving about the ones she made at school for Chinese New Year (with meat & honey?) – I’d love to have a go with her, even though I’m pretty sure Mummy’s won’t compare with the school ones!
Andrea, I’ve been saying to Pete recently that we should try making dumplings – I’ve never attempted them before! That might be our next project, I’ve got a couple of books on the topic to pour over. I’m sorry I don’t have a recipe yet though! :)
Yet another lovely collection in your kitchen. I would love to try out the pumpkin seed oil. My post will be coming soon…perhaps tomorrow or even today…I’ll let you know! :)
Laila, hooray! I love peeking into your kitchen! :)
Now my post is up! :)
[…] it’s always fun to join in to Celia’s In My Kitchen posts that she graciously hosts each month. I don’t know about you, but I love snooping in […]
Oooh, I definitely see a chocolate trend in this post Celia! I hope you don’t mind but I may have suggested that people swing by your house if they’re in the area just in case you had any of that cake left over (It’s possibly mentioned in my IMK post for February: http://dianeskitchentable.wordpress.com/2014/01/31/in-my-kitchen-february-2014/ ).
I’m trying to imagine the pumpkin seed oil taste, it sounds really interesting. I’m not sure if that’s common there but when I find something like that around here, I’m almost afraid to use it because then it will be gone.
I’ve got a similar, very cute mould but you know I’ve never used it and maybe it’s high time that I did.
Love how you end up with mutant vegetables! You’ll have to give us your secret fertilizer recipe someday.
Di, there’s always a chocolate trend in our kitchen! :D The pumpkin oil tastes nutty, and like you, I used to keep my “good stuff”, but then I had some things go out of date, which was incredibly annoying! So now I try to make a conscious effort to use up my goodies on time. And the garden secret is…chickens! :)
I thought that pumpkin oil might have a nutty flavor & although I’m having a hard time using “the good stuff” I am getting better at it. You’re right about it going out of date & being wasteful. I mean, really what am I waiting for? The First Family to come for dinner?
Ah, chickens – I thought that might be the recipe.
Celia? I don’t know why that comment came up above my comment to your post – it’s part of my IMK post for this month but not even the beginning. Sorry about that if you want to delete but I’ve been having some very weird things happening with WordPress these past few days.
Di, don’t worry, that’s a standard WP pingback – if you link to a WP blog from a WP blog, it sends a notification. It’s meant to happen, but you can go to your settings and disallow it if you prefer! :)
Oh, thanks for the info. I’ve never seen that happen before.
I’ve never heard of pumpkin seed oil…… putting that one on my wish list!
and pass the pizza while you’re there :)
Claire, I’ve never put snake beans on a pizza before – it was surprisingly good! I reckon you’d LOVE pumpkin seed oil! :)
Gong Xi Fa Cai to you too, love… and this time I can really ask, where did January go to?!
There are so many delicious things in your kitchen and I’m salivating even though it’s 6.30am! Your chocolate cake looks delicious, do you think our PT will approve? (I think no, at this point). And I am looking forward to the final results on the amaretti. Joanne is a sweetie.
Happy cooking to you and all our IMK friends xox
It seemed to whiz past, didn’t it, Lizzy! When are you coming back to visit, I’ve got all sorts of things to show you which I forgot when you were here (including a fez.. :)). xxx
It did indeed! If you think time flies when you’re working and raising a family, wait till you retire, darling… the days just go! Not sure just yet… we have our seaside holiday coming up soon…. definitely not too far in the future though… we are looking forward to see you both again xoxo : )
Happy Chinese New Year darling! We love the lantern that you gave us :D
Happy New Year to you too, love! So glad you liked the lantern, I’ve gone a bit mental making them this year! :)
Am really loving this blog and the community you have created. Gong Xi Fa Cai to you too! When we lived in Darwin, everyone there used to call this out to each other, such was the history of the Chinese contribution to Darwin settlement. Happy year of the Horse!
Thanks Ardys! My friend and neighbour Maude grew up in Darwin – such a big Chinese community up there! Hope you have a wonderful year of the Horse! :)
If you have a crowd coming over, that’s a great way to make chocolate cake. I love white pepper as I use it a lot in Thai dishes. It used to be hard to source and I’d have to go to an Asian supermarket but I’m finding it’s becoming more common these days and I can even buy it from my grocer. I love the look of your pizza – what a yummy meal that must have been. I have a lot of egg whites in my freezer – I should make some amaretti cookies! xx
Charlie, I love the idea of baking a huge slab of cake for the masses. And just saw you made macaroons – they looked amazing! :) Will need to check out your recipe, I haven’t got mine quite right yet!
I’ve just come home from 6 weeks away and among my souvenirs are a bruised tibia, a torn shoulder ligament, an arm broken in two places and smashed teeth – all thanks to a clumsy exit from a cab in Pisa – so there’s very little happening in my kitchen.
I as looking at some peaches the other day and thinking how nicely they’d go with some amaretti cookies so I’m looking forward to your recipe Celia.
Amanda!! I’m so sorry to hear that! I hope you’re on the mend – it did look like you had a glorious time otherwise!
So many yummy things. Here’s my post for this month – http://www.gustoso.com.au/blog/challenge/in-my-kitchen-february-2013/
Thanks for arranging again.
Emma, that’s fab, thanks for playing! :)
I love these posts Celia and sometimes wish I had a blog so I could join in the fun :) Happy Chinese New Year to you and your family. My mum loved the lantern I made her, thanks for the great instructions x
Stefanie, I wish you could join in too, I’d love to see what’s in your kitchen, especially so we could compare Turkish plates! :) So glad your mum liked the lantern – we have to keep them happy, right? ;-)
Hi Celia, not sure if you know but they have a new shop :) We saw Moya yesterday, it’s a larger space at 127 Willoughby Rd Crows Nest. I’m so happy for them that they found a new location. I wish I could buy some more plates, alas hubby keeps asking why I need more :)
Stefanie, that’s wonderful news! Thanks for letting me know! :)
[…] over to Celia at Fig Jam and Lime Cordial to check out what’s going on her kitchen and to have a snoop at other kitchens around the […]
Happy New Year Celia! I used your chocolate cake recipe too and it was brilliant. So easy and light and fluffy too. Pumpkin oil sounds intriguing and I guess would be great for dipping bread into. Thank you for hosting again – my post is up.
Nancy, that’s so cool! Going to check out your post now! Gong Xi Fa Cai!
Happy Chinese New Year! Something new in my kitchen is a rice cooker. Happy Weekend:)
Renee, you’ll have fun with that! They work so well! Hope you’re having a great one! :)
Hi Celia
Your chocolates and cake took fabulous, I am green with envy at the apparent ease in which you make them – clearly, it is your forte. Congratulations on the NY.
Here is the link to this month’s post. Have a wonderful month.

Glenda, thank you, a lot of chocolate passes through our kitchen, and you guys only get to see the stuff that works! :) Heading over to check out your kitchen now! :)
Happy Chinese New Year! So much wonderful diversity in your kitchen.
Thank you! Happy Chinese New Year to you too!
I love that pizza! I’d love to see you make that rolled crust. And I’m very curious about the pumpkin oil! This was a fun read. :-)
That was my first attempt at a rolled crust, inspired by an American food show I was watching. It worked surprisingly well! :)
Happy New Year. I hope the horse is kind to you.
Thanks darling. I hope it’s kind to all of us!
Happy Chinese New Year to you and your family Celia. All that chocolate looks yum. Let’s hope the wooden horse brings joy for everyone:)
Thanks Jody! Happy Chinese New Year to you too!

hello celia, happy February. so many delicious goodies. i hope you are like me and slathering that Pumpkin seed oil onto everything. The sable looks divine
Darling, thanks again! I’ve got pumpkin oil focaccia happening – recipe coming soon!
Happy New year Celia! Lovely as always and drooling over your magnificent chocolates! Pumpkin seed oil makes the most delicious salad dressings!
Pamela, it’s the most gorgeous oil – I’ve never tried anything like it. It’s so nutty!
Here’s mine, Celia! http://miskcooks.com/2014/02/01/in-my-kitchen-february-2014/
Cheers, Misky! It’s on the list! :)
Thanks, Celia.
Nom nom, see it twice, bake it, eat it… :) :) damn fine cake that xx
I’m so glad you liked it! :)
Hi Celia!
Once again I’m inspired by your posts! I’ve pinned the chocolate recipe here -http://www.pinterest.com/marianep/recipes-to-try/ – on my Recipes to Try board – I’ll be making this cake for my grandsons when they visit! I’m also inspired to make your Purslane Salad. After your post I found purslane growing in my garden!
Here’s what’s happening in my kitchen in February! http://apricottart.blogspot.com.au/2014/02/in-my-kitchen-in-february.html
Marian, finding purslane growing in your garden is like finding treasure! :) Hope you like the cake and salad, and thanks for playing! xx
Happy New Year, my friend! That chocolate looks pretty darn delish!
I just went to the Spice Shop and splurged on a bottle of Madagascar Vanilla, some hickory smoked sea salt and a little bottle of amaretti flavoring. I want to try to make an almond flavored sponge cake. Have you posted your almond cookie recipe?
For the party last night the hub made prosciutto wrapped asparagus with hollandaise. I made meat balls and chocolate dipped strawberries.
Full and happy here, hugs, Maz.
Maz, thank you! Have a wonderful year of the Horse! I haven’t quite got the almond cookies right yet, so no recipe for the crunchy ones, only the chewy version…
https://figjamandlimecordial.com/2009/11/18/amaretti/
Hello Celia, your chocolate looks incredibly glossy and delicious as always…love those dragons!
That is a serious chocolate cake, yum! I have never seen pumpkin seed oil before, how interesting. That pizza looks great, love the addition of snake beans. Happy cooking and thanks once again for hosting my kitchen. My post is linked x
Jane, griddled snake beans (we did them in the cafe press) on pizza was a great discovery – they were delicious! Thanks for always playing – I love visiting your kitchen! xx
Gong hey fat choi to you too Celia! Auto correct keep trying to say Hey Fat Chook, and I was going to leave it for fun but was scared you might think I was meaning you :) I think your pepper is amazing and am drooling over that deep, dark pumpkin seed oil. Are your cookies going to be like the ones from the Italian bakery near you, or more on the crispy/ meringuey side? They look good regardless. Tomorrow littlej and I are going to Yumm cha, but today I’m attempting to master my own gluten free pork buns- yummo xox
I wished a pregnant neighbour that, and she thought I’d said, “Come here fat boy” :) Have a wonderful year of the Horse, darling! xx
Happy Chinese New Year, Ce!! Best wishes for the year of the horse! Hopefully, we’ll have time to “visit” this year. Love to you and yours!
Jules, so nice to hear from you – our recipe is coming up at midnight tonight!! :) Talk soon dearheart xxx
MMMM,..Your home-made chocolates & home-made chocolate sablés look really worth it! Yummmm! Great things are happeining in your kitchen! Yeahh!
Thanks Sophie! Hope you’ve had a great weekend! xx
Happy New Year! Those sables are calling me.
Come and get some! :)
That chocolate cake looks divine! Happy New Year Celia!
I could happily spend *weeks* in a kitchen with only the things you’ve listed, and I know from your blog that they’re far from the only things there! Yumyum!
Happy Chinese New Year Celia – those dragons are magnificent.
Thanks Sally! Hope you have a wonderful year of the Horse! xx
Sure will. I think I prefer horses actually :)
Mmmmm. Those chocolate sables look particularly good. Happy Chinese New Year.
It seems you have a lot in your kitchen. And it all looks good to me. I’v always wanted to try pumpkin seed oil!
I love the mutant squash!! Also the new pizza dish (and the look of that pizza) and chocolates – delicious :) Thanks for hosting this Celia and I have just done my own February post; http://www.bitesizedthoughts.com/2014/02/in-my-kitchen-february-2014-with.html

Thanks for always joining it! :)
I love that you’ve made ammaretti, I was obsessed by them as a child and sometimes contemplate making them. Id love to hear when you feel like you’ve got the right recipe and I’ll give them a go.
Here is my contribution for this months IMK. Thank you so much for hosting such an awesome event, I love seeing what everyone is up to :-)
Leah, I’ve got it right now! The post is a couple on from this one! :)

I so want to live in your kitchen. There is so much great stuff going on. Love the sound of the pumpkin seed oil. I am going to have to try and find some. My trombie is just starting to produce, but it looks nothing like yours. Mine have taken to curling this year for some reason.
Tania, our trombies are having a weird time as well! We still haven’t grown any true trombies, only mutants..
Hi Celia, I love the mutant squash! And it appears to be chocolate mania in your kitchen this February– can I come over? :) I could absolutely gobble down that delicious cake and those cookies.
Just put up my In My Kitchen post at http://holycowvegan.net/2014/02/azuki-bean-dip.html. Thanks for the opportunity to look around my messy kitchen and make sense of it. :)
Vaishali, it’s always chocolate mania here.. :) Your dip looked divine!
G’day and Happy Chinese New Year Celia, true!
I really enjoy this series and thank you for inviting me to join each month too!
LOVE Sarawak spices as it is a unique place to experience…but glad we did a couple of years go now,

Love this series of yours! I’ve only just discovered it, but I’m glad I have. So fascinating! We’ll try hard to do one from our Cambodian kitchen here in Siem Reap by the 10th. I shall definitely be checking back in. It’s like snooping in people’s kitchen pantries, which is one of my most favourite things to do.

Celia, your chocolates for Chinese New Year (and chocolate cake and chocolate sables) are a sensation. They’re also making me crave chocolate big time! :) Never tried pumpkin seed oil, but it sounds lovely, and your array of pepper will be fun to play with, too!
Kim, the pumpkin seed oil is a new discovery for me too, but I’m quite hooked on it now! And I LOVE pepper! :)
Celia, my post is up- finally- I am having some trouble linking- as I’ve been using a different venue to blog from since my other ( Windows live writer) has crashed.
:)
No worries at all, Heidi! Lovely to peek into your kitchen, darling friend! xx
mmmm chocolate and pizza – hope you had a good Chinese New Year and are still eating that yummy chocolate cake – looks delicious

Thanks for playing Giulia! :)
Ah yes….the tombocino. This time making an appearance in the pizza I see. I’m glad you spoke of freezing your sable dough. I freeze everything and anything. So handy to have something in the freezer as a treat or when you need it but for us it’s about practicality. If we had a tray of brownies, we’d eat the whole lot. I always freeze half straight away as a form or portion control. Thanks Celia.

Happy CNY to you too Celia! The year of the horse is my kinda year (pity I’m a rat :p)! That pumpkin seed oil looks fabulous – how are you using it? For dipping sourdough in, or on salad?!
I’ve come down to the wire, but my post is up! http://absolutelyjas.com.au/post/2014/02/09/my-kitchen-february
Hi Celia, what a great collection. The amariti look great and the boys are spot on with the custard combo. The chocolate cake looks fantastic if you start freezing them, move over Sara Lee! Love the pepper and they’ve spark a shopping expedition for the weekend.
I’m glad your garden is doing well and can produce such a beautiful pizza!
cheers
Jason
