In my kitchen…
…is more Tupperware! As you might recall, my old friend and 500-partner Carol gave me two containers for Christmas…
Well…last week I popped in for a cup of tea, and she announced she’d bought me NINE more pieces at a garage (yard) sale. Half were brand new, the others very lightly used. Pete moaned a bit about storage, but that didn’t stop him from immediately filling up the cereal container with his homemade muesli.
Carol’s big concern was whether or not they’d match the pieces she gave me for Christmas – I adore that woman…
. . . . .
In my kitchen…
…is more Cuban bread – this time I tried using lemongrass instead of leek leaves to form the split, and it worked brilliantly (thanks for the tip, Spice Girl!)…
. . . . .
In my kitchen…
…is a gift from our lovely neighbours Nic and Pete. They went skiing in Japan and brought me home this stunning bag – the panels are made with fabric recycled from old kimonos. Nic knows my weakness for a red handbag…
. . . . .
In my kitchen…
…are the last of this season’s snake beans. They’ve had a glorious run…
. . . . .
In my kitchen…
…are two new purchases from Harkola. The dried Greek sage was bought on the recommendation of the Spice Girl, who crumbles it into all kinds of savoury dishes…
I adore Linden tea, and usually buy it in Turkish tea bags, so when I saw a bag of the loose dried leaves and flowers (for under $3), I couldn’t resist. The tea is pale, lightly flavoured and stomach settling…
. . . . .
In my kitchen…
…are extra bits and pieces for my mixer. Robyn’s Kenwood mixer died after more than a decade of use, so she very kindly gave me her accessories. It’s the first time I’ve had a splash guard to fit my D-shaped mixing bowl, and it’s proven to be incredibly useful already. And as all my fellow bakers know, having a spare mixing bowl is such a bonus…
. . . . .
In my kitchen…
…was this gorgeous piece of papercraft. Monkey Girl (Big Boy’s girlfriend) came over to teach me how to make her Chinese lanterns. “Let’s make one each..” she said. Her design uses twenty-four ang pow wrappers, and she had to stick the fringing on for me, as I’m completely rubbish with a hot glue gun.
When we’d finished both lanterns, the darling girl said, “The one I made can be for Mah-Mah…” My mum was incredibly touched to receive such a precious, handmade gift…
. . . . .

I will be tagging along in a few hours…. so excited! and I ve got my umbrella photo just for you!!!!
nice round up this month, Celia!
Hooray! I do love my umbrellas, Sally.. :)
The sage is called foskomelo – it is all over the place in the Greek countryside. I always pick some when we are there to stock up on supplies. Yes, it is great in recipes, but much stronger than garden sage. The pale yellow tea looks very much like linden flower tea (sometimes called lime flowers, although not related to the citrus tree – the linden tree is often called a lime tree). I dry my own linden from the tree in my garden. Try it with honey – ambrosia!
Thank you! The tea is linden tea, and it’s been delicious! I haven’t tried the sage yet – my friend tells me that it’s quite different from regular sage. I’ll have to give it a go. Do you ever use it to make tea?
Yes, Foskomelo is used frequently as a tea in Greece. It’s different! 😄
I loved the bag too, how nice. Thank you, love, nia
Nia, isn’t it gorgeous? Thanks love xx
As always so many lovely things in your kitchen Celia. I could not live without my tupperware. I may have mentioned this before but their lifetime guarantee is wonderful. I have had a few items replaced.
Have a super weekend. I will let you know when I have put my IMK post together.
:-) Mandy xo
Mandy, I’d heard about their legendary warranty – hope I never have to test it! Look forward to seeing your kitchen this month! :) xx
Seems Tupperware has landed itself in my post too this month. I will post it tomorrow morning. xo
Can’t believe you have just discovered Tupperware- an American icon from the 50’s! We love it & use it heartily- expensive but the best plastic ware!
Ironically, I’ve only discovered Tupperware as I’m nearing 50! :)
LOVE the bag, I have a soft spot for red DOORS! I remember going to a tupperware party when i was a very young mum.. years and years ago. I never went to another.. it was just too awful.. tho I did not mind the big tupperware. containers but I have a problem with lids. I lose them. Do you have a system for keeping track of lids? c
Celi, I don’t think I have enough to worry about losing the lids, plus they’ve all been full since Carol gave them to me! :)
Hey C! Love the handbag and the lantern is beauty.. One can’t have enough storage IMO. What’s a 500 partner? Warm hugs, Maz
Maz, 500 is a card game, bit like bridge. Hope all is well on your side of the big blue planet.. xx
Another wonderful peek Celia! That bread looks mouthwatering and what a beautiful lantern. You have such lovely friends but that’s to be expected from someone so lovely themself! X
Claire, thank you, I’m blessed with the most fabulous friends. Some of whom I’ve known longer than you’ve been alive! :) Hope all is going well with bubba! xx
What a lovely lantern! The fringe on the bottom is a nice touch. Makes it look very elegant. Nice hand bag. Looks like the Tupperware fits into your kitchen nicely!
Manuela, Pete wasn’t sure it would fit into our kitchen, but all the boxes are now filled and have their own home! :)
Lots of lovely things in your kitchen, Celia. That bread looks especially good.
Pat, thank you! I froze about half of that batch, and we’re going to have it for lunch today!
Such lovely things in your kitchen – the lantern is so beautiful and made even more so by the fact that it is home made.
I pressed send to soon – sorry. I would love to join along with IMK and have my thinking cap on!
Please do! We’d love to peek into your kitchen! :)
Thanks Celia – I will do my best to live up to the high standards on your site!
When ever I hear you say the words Cuban bread, I hear that music and it makes me want to dance a little :) I am negotiating for some free range ‘flett’ from the butcher, he has promised to keep me some to render. He suggested doing it in a foiled dish in the oven rather than on the hob. Will let you know if it happens :) I love Monkey Girl’s decoration! And your new bag! and your beans! in fact I love it all. Such a good time in your kitchen this month xxx
Joanna, Ardys mentioned below that there’s a red theme this month, but I didn’t notice it until she said! I guess last month was Chinese New Year, so there was a lot of it around! What is flett? Google proved must unhelpful when I asked it.. :) xxx
leaf lard, also called flead (my butcher pronounced it do it sounded the way I spelled it, I guess ) or flare dat is the lard from around the pig’s kidney, has brittle crystalline structure, the best fat according to Jennifer McLagen in ‘Fat’.
Cool! I couldn’t find that here, but apparently it’s the very best thing for making lard with. All the “lard” I have is rendered from belly fat, I think… xx
Is it March already, Celia?! Seriously, what happened to the time!
So many good things in your kitchen as always, Celia. The dried sage sounds great. I’ve only just recently dried some from fresh. Don’t think I’ve tried the tea, but I could use some right now!
Your lantern is gorgeous.Very impressive craft!
Ah, Tupperware… I left all mine behind when I left my ex-husband… we had a cupboard full! I was downsizing. In one sense I love the stuff, it’s so good for storage, on the other hand I hate how empty ones spill out of the cupboard. : )
Liz, the Tupperware is bulky, isn’t it? Not sure my kitchen could accommodate any more of it. Then again, it does work so well! :) If time is racing past, then you must be enjoying your retirement, love! :) xxx
Sure am!! : ) xoxo
I’d like to rip into some of that bread right now Celia :-)
Brydie, I froze half of it, and we’re having it for lunch today! :)
I’d like to be in your kitchen.
I’d like you to be in my kitchen. Then we could have a cup of tea and a natter. :)
About that Linden tea…the streets leading in and out of Bagni di Lucca are lined with Linden trees, or Tiglio as they are called in Italy. In summer the little yellow flowers fall to the ground like snow drifts and the smell is divine.
Deb, it’s such a delicious drink. I find it very soothing on an unsettled stomach!
I’m dangerous with a hot glue gun too. I love the lantern – so pretty. I have been meaning to buy more Tupperware. I bought a pantry set a long time ago and now some of the lids have broken making the containers useless. Like your friend, I love my containers to be matching xx
Charlie, apparently the Tupperware has a lifetime guarantee, so if any parts break, they’ll replace them for you. Could be worth following up?
[…] of stuff to share and what better place to put it than in Celia’s In My Kitchen series? Visit Fig Jam and Lime Cordial and join in by the 10th of the month, any month and have some fun seeing what everyone is […]
What a lovely mix of things going on in your kitchen as always Celia! Really want to make that Cuban bread.
Andrea, it works really well with lemongrass leaves – they’re tougher, so they don’t break and stick to the loaf. Hope you get to try them! :)
[…] escaped me so I am grabbing March by the horns here. As always, hats off to the talented Celia of Fig Jam and Lime Cordial for hosting this excellent series. Stop by her blog for links to kitchens all over the […]
I’m envious of that splatter guard for your Kenwood!! My Kenny pre dates such luxuries, but it’s been a wonderful workhorse so I shouldn’t complain. You just have to love the buying opportunities at garage sales!!!
I found a splatter guard for the old round Kenwood bowl (from my previous machine) – maybe if you checked ebay? It does make a big difference!
Hi Celia, my contribution has posted this morning, cheers
One can never have too many pieces of tupperware. They look like they match perfectly ( how funny). An extra bowl for your mixer is such a luxury. Saves so much time. That lantern is like the palace of lanterns. very nice!
The extra bowl is gold, isn’t it? I knew you’d understand. :)
I notice a red theme in this month’s post, and I love red. Those red lidded tupperware containers would look very fetching in my red kitchen!! Wish I had some linden tea right now too… nasty gastro going around… very enjoyable post, will finish my IMK soon… x
Ardys, I didn’t notice the red theme until you mentioned it, thank you! :) I guess since last month was CNY, there was a lot of red around! Hope you’re feeling better soon! xx
Love the bag from Japan: remember seeing and buying so many items there using old kimono pieces. And I had almost forgotten about linden tea – back in my birth country we oft used it at times of feverish illness and tummy troubles. I can smell it now: no aroma like it :) !
Eha, isn’t it amazing how strong our taste memories are! I’m certainly happy to discover the linden tea, it’s so soothing! :)
There’s always something lovely in your kitchen. In the next two weeks my first attempt at sourdough bread will be in my kitchen. I just hope that I’ll be as good as you at bread making. My first few efforts were not good but I’m not giving up:-)
Jody, good luck with the sourdough! Once you get it sorted, you’ll have bread forever! :) Did you make your own starter? I couldn’t manage that – all I ever grew was purple mould. I bought mine from Northwest Sourdough.
March! I am ready to celebrate! IN YOUR KITCHEN- IN MY KITCHEN!
It doesn’t matter- Winter is on the run (although right now it is running right into NE Ohio)!
YOur beans look so right and delicious- I am ready to start planning my garden.
I love your red purse- and your tupperware and your very fancy Chinese lanterns- I love the women our sons can bring into our lives!
And that Cuban bread just keeps getting better looking!
btw- I put up a post, too!
Hooray! Grabbing a cup of tea and coming for a visit soon, Heidi! xx
I love your kitchen stuff. It’s always different and makes me wish I lived closer.
I wish you lived closer too! Could you imagine how much we’d eat? We’d have to widen the doors to our houses.. :)
The splash guard is fantastic but a spare bowl, even better!
Tandy, I know! I was so excited! :)
I must try the Cuban bread! That looks delicious!
Thank you! It’s been very popular here – both with the boys for eating, and with me as it lets me use up some of my pan drippings from my roasts! :)
I love that lantern! And your Tupperware – what a find. I have so many boxes in the kitchen, but I love them (I’m a bit obsessed) and I notice that I go in cycles of all boxes full to lots of empty boxes everywhere, which is where I am now.
I’m in this month!
Siobhan, hooray! Did I get your town right on your listing? I wasn’t sure if the name was “Ulupinar”, or “Ulupinar in Antalya”?
Ulupinar is good — it was very satisfying to see it there!
You can never have too much Tupperware! What a great selection you now have, and I love your lantern and new bag too. I’d never heard of linden tea but also like finding favourites in loose leaf, and cheaper, form. Happy drinking :)
I’ve been remarkably punctual this month and just published my March IMK post – it is at http://www.bitesizedthoughts.com/2014/03/in-my-kitchen-march-2014.html
Kari, that’s fabulous! Thanks for always joining in! :)
Your kitchen is filled with wonderful things this month but I especially like your purse…it is beautiful. I love a flat bag like that when I go out to dinner as I don’t need to carry very much. I’m sure you will get lots of compliments when you carry it.
Karen, you’d be impressed, it came with a separate silk satchel for storing in when not in use! :)
How wonderful.
Hi Celia
I love your Tupperware gift, what a find and what a friend to think of you. I bet those Kenwood attachments will come in handy – again, so thoughtful of your friend. All the best for the month. Here is the link to my post.
http://passionfruitgarden.com/2014/03/01/in-my-kitchen-march-2014/
Glenda, I have the best mates. :) The Kenwood bowl and splash guard have been in use since they arrived! Hope you have a great month too! xx
It’s all so delightful in your kitchen! From Japanese bags (I’d jump at the chance to ski in Japan) to your gorgeous paper lantern. X
We have so many friends who ski in Japan, but we’ve never been! Maybe one day! :)
Hi Celia, that bread looks fantastic and what a great sandwich. I’m going to have to try snake beans in next years crop. And you are right on the money about the extra mixing bowls, I often have my eye on ebay for an extra one.
Your lantern is beautiful, a bit of hot glue do wonders.
cheers
Jason
Jason, I hope you find a mixing bowl! Having a spare is such a treat! And not sure snake beans will work in Melbourne – they’re a tropical plant – although my friend Brian manages to grow them in Canberra..
Hello Celia. Tupperware…always useful isn’t it? Cuban bread with lemongrass is pure genius! Those snake beans are glorious. Just as Jason said, I am going to try snake beans again next summer. That lantern is just beautiful, how precious.
Thanks again for being such a delightful host for our kitchen tours. My post is linked. Happy Sunday to you x
Jane, the snake beans like the heat, so they should do well where you are! Cuban bread with lemongrass – talk about fusion baking! :D Hope you had a great weekend! xx
you make gorgeous bread, you make awesome chocolate. does your family realize how lucky they are? Loved the tour as always
That’s so kind of you, thanks Azita. If you met my family though, you’d know I was the lucky one.. :)
awwww … the best thing you could say. Lucky you! :)
No, I’m not making my own starter. I will be learning how to make it at a place in Hallam here in Melbourne. My few attempts at making bread have been dismal so I know l need some help.:)
Have fun! It’s an exciting new project! :)
Ah, Tupperware. I really haven’t any but Mom sure did. Each one had “Tre” on the bottom so that everyone knew to return them to her, “Theresa”. :)
That lantern is really beautiful, even more so knowing that you made it. I, finally, found a source for “good” lard. It’s from a CSA,of all things. Most rely on their CSA for fresh vegetables but I’ll be getting my lard from them. I cannot wait to give your Cuban bread recipe a try.
John, that’s fantastic! Once you have decent lard, you’ll be able to make all sorts of things with it. I keep wanting to try tamales again, but haven’t gotten around to it! :)

Your cuban bagettes look divine. All this bread baking everyone has been doing has inspired me to do some of my own. here is my contribution to this month’s In My Kitchen. Thank you :-) Leah
http://sharingthefoodwelove.wordpress.com/2014/03/02/in-my-kitchen/
Leah, thanks for playing! Look forward to peeking into your kitchen!
Score on the Tupperware Celia. You can never have too many storage containers. Next year I am going to try the snake beans. The varieties we tried this year performed poorly. We wouldn’t have had two meals from them. Thanks for the tip about the umbrella. I will track one down on the off chance it ever rains again in Perth.
Hasn’t it been dry over there! I hope it rains for you soon!
There are a lot of cool things happening in your kitchen, Celia! Cool!
Thanks lovely! xx
I do love your little red bag and the lantern is such a work of art. The bread looks wonderful. Is the Greek sage different from regular sage?
Jan, it’s quite different – a lot stronger than regular dried sage. I haven’t found a use for it yet..
I like my tupperware to match too I’m afraid. What lovely finds again Celia especially the bits and pieces for the Kenwood. We are trying gluten free at the moment but boy I wish I could have a slice of your bread with a slab of brie!
Nancy, it felt like Christmas last month, with all the wonderful gifts! Loved the tupperware and the extra Kenwood attachments went straight into use!
I love the paper craft! And everything that is in your kitchen actually! I love my Tupperware. The husband *says* he’s ambivalent but like yours, rushes to fill them on the occasion one becomes empty :)
This is my contribution http://withafork.blogspot.com/2014/03/whats-in-my-kitchen-march-2014.html
Hooray! Thanks for joining in Lisa! :)
Gorgeous bag indeed Celia, how thoughtful! I’ve never tried Linden tea, I’ll have to keep an eye out for it. Jealous of your beans, mine were rubbish this year, and your lantern is definitely very beautiful and spending time with family is priceless dear xox
Becca, I think you’d like the linden tea, it’s delicious and very stomach soothing! Sorry to hear your beans were rubbish, our cucurbits were as well this year! xx
Well, I might just have to join in.. I will try to post something tomorrow.. pray for good light:D I love that lantern, what a special gift to have someone come and share their talents with you!
Yaay! I’m excited now Barb! Look forward to seeing your post! (But no pressure, ok? :))
Ok.. it’s going to be published tomorrow morning:D
Thank you, Celia. I’m working a ridiculous amount with stupid deadlines. Reading this post inspired me about what I can do with my free time once I have some again. It’s keeping me going…
Jacqueline, life can get like that sometimes, can’t it? I hope you come up for air soon. I’m so happy you’re enjoying our ramblings.. :)
What a beautiful gift, the homemade lantern.
Isn’t it a treasure? My mum was so pleased.. :)
Hi Celia, I have just had fun doing my IMK March post. Cheers, F
Sorry Celia I was interrupted while I was letting you know I had posted this month’s contribution. Here’s the link http://wp.me/p2frs2-1ns. Thanks 😄
I love the IMK posts, Celia! I am very jealous of the Tupperware!
[…] Kitchen for March I can’t help but hold out hope for some warm weather. Be sure to swing by Celia’s kitchen this month – she’s made some scrumptious Cuban bread that I wouldn’t mind having right […]
Celia, I should send over some of my Tupperware. I’ve collected so much that I have an entire drawer just for it. I was laughing at Cecelia’s comment about going to Tupperware parties. It seemed like every other week someone was throwing a Tupperware party and you had to get very creative to find ways to avoid them. I guess I’m just not that into sitting in a circle, saying something silly about yourself, and watching a Tupperware fashions show – just give me the catalog & I’ll pick something out but not 3 hrs. of talking about plastic containers.
I LOVE that red purse, especially how it’s made from recycled kimonos. I love making things like that and keep meaning to get to using up some fabric. And the lantern is absolutely gorgeous – so much creativity there.
Your Cuban bread is definitely looking good Celia – but it reminds me that I’ve got to get back in the kitchen and work on some dough for tonight’s calzones.
I didn’t think I had much to show in my kitchen this month, but as I looked around I managed to find some things after all. I’ve just got the post up now.’

Thanks against for being such a gracious hostess.
What an excellent gift and amazing friend to boot :) WOW! Your cuban bread really looks amazing :). I wonder if we could grow snake beans down here? Starting to plan out my ideas for next years harvest. Cheers for the excellent hint about Linden tea. There are a lot of mature linden trees here in Tassie and I had heard about being able to use the flowers but not the leaves. Might have to collect some and give it a go :).

Hi Celia! Great round up this month!
I’ve never heard of linden tea before! Sounds interesting and I’m a big sucker for teas so must try this one next time I’m there.
I see the Tupperware collection is growing lol, apparently its inevitable!
I’m happy to be joining the IMK family again this month :) I miss you all
http://gourmetwog.wordpress.com/2014/03/04/in-my-kitchen-march-2014-and-an-explanation/
G’day Celia! You can never have too much Tupperware. I would LOVE to know where the tops (or the bottoms) hide over the years, true!
I can almost smell you bread thought the computer too!
Thanks for you kitchen view this month too…have now added my post!
Cheers! Joanne
Goodness, that was a lot of comments to scroll down!
Love the red bag and the bread. That Cuban bread is on my list when I have a lazy afternoon pottering in the kitchen. I wonder if I could use a leek leaf instead of lemongrasss. Will have to try.
Anne, I started making my Cuban bread with oiled leek leaves, so they definitely do work fine. The lemongrass is a little sturdier, plus I have heaps in the garden that I don’t use for much else (my neighbour weaves baskets from it). I use the lemongrass roots and base in curries, but rarely ever the leaves, so it was nice to be able to use it for the bread! :) I’ve just made another batch with leftover drippings from roasted pork ribs.

Fantastic! Thanks for playing Selma! I’ve listed you as being in London, is that still correct?
Thanks Celia! Yes, I’m in London :)
Everything looks amazing and beautiful!
Ahh, mixer attachments, what a blessed addition to your kitchen and I’m with you — gotta love a red handbag! It is nothing short of a miracle I got an IMK done this month, I’ve missed it. :) http://savoringtoday.com/2014/03/04/in-my-kitchen-march-2014/

Love the tupperware storage – glad pete came around to it quickly – storage containers are great (unless they look like a giant cupcake as in our recent raffle win). Am intrigued to see your loose leaf linden tea as I have recently discovered it but keep forgetting to drink it. And am so impressed at your home made lantern

My kitchen is full of gifts this week.

The herbs and tea sound so interesting – and I can’t wait to try your Cuban bread, I’ve already bookmarked it!
[…] managed to only miss one month this time in linking up with Celia for an In My Kitchen post, yet it still seems to be a big one. Here it […]
Celia, I always enjoy reading your IMK posts because they’re such a mixture of food, fun, & friendship, and this month was no exception. That said, I’m sorry I won’t be joining in for March — just got back from my trip to Minnesota and I haven’t even unpacked yet, let alone started cooking or re-stocking the pantry. I’m also mindful of your deadline on the 10th half a day ahead of me here!
The ingredients for Charlie’s chocolate cake for my birthday (on the 12th) are coming to room temp as we speak, although I was eyeing the lil’ “chocolate cakes” recipe in your recent post, too. ;) In my mind, there’s no such thing as too much chocolate cake to celebrate special events, ha! I was also wondering if the leek leaves added any infused flavor to your Cuban bread? Even if they didn’t, it looks entirely delicious. Happy “March IMK,” Celia! Always a pleasure, and I’m looking forward to poking around in everyone else’s kitchen’s, too.
Hi Kim! Sounds like you had a good trip. There’s never any pressure to join in the IMK gathering (it’s never meant to feel like work), but we will miss you this month! :) For what it’s worth, the deadline is the 10th wherever you are. Happy birthday for the 12th! And I think the leek leaves actually did add a little flavour to the Cuban bread, as did the lemongrass, but it was very subtle! Have a great month! xx
Oops, Celia — I misread! Lemongrass it ’tis (re: the Cuban bread… love me a Cubano sammich) and still delicious by all accounts. If I happen to sneak an IMK post in before midnite tonight, I’ll be pinging you. :) Thanks!
P.S. Thanks for the birthday wishes and IMK is never work… :)

Celia. I’m up & runnin’ — or baking and/or cooking! Thanks again so much for hostessing this venture each month. xo
That bread looks amazing! mmm…I have to start making baguettes again or I could try Cuban bread for something new!
