Juggling

June 4, 2014 by Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Recently, I received a text photo from my baby cousin Lih, with a note reminding me that I’d taught him to juggle fifteen years ago.

Back then, I actually could juggle, but I hadn’t picked up the beanbags for nearly a decade. I figured it was time to get back into it. Here’s my more recent, slightly tragic attempt…

I’ve decided I need to put in some serious practice, so that I can make another attempt at juggling clubs. The last time I tried, I threw the first club into the air…and it came straight back down on my head and nearly knocked me out. Uncle Mike has offered to coach me, so I’m going to try again.

Juggling is surprisingly easy – I’m nearly fifty, with truly rubbish hand-eye co-ordination, so if I can do it, then I reckon just about anyone can. This great video is a good place to start. Have fun!

    • on June 6, 2014 at 6:38 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

I’m trying to learn to do it without the look of desperation on my face – the really cool jugglers don’t even seem to watch where the balls are going! :)

  2. on June 4, 2014 at 6:21 am sallybr

LOVE IT!!!!!!!! Oh, I loved your video, you look so impossibly cute juggling!

I am not even going to try and describe for you what would happen with the universe if I attempted that. I don’t think I can work with one bag alone ;-)

    seriously, I im in awe!

  3. on June 4, 2014 at 6:23 am Sophie33

I loved watching it all! cool! My sister-in-law is a genius in it!

    • on June 6, 2014 at 6:38 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

I need more practice! I want to be genius at it too! :)

      • on June 8, 2014 at 7:37 pm Sophie33

        I need more practise too!;)

  4. on June 4, 2014 at 6:24 am sallybr

Celia I just watched the instructional video… super cool… gosh, this is tempting me… wouldn’t it be nice to practice for a while and if I get to do it surprise Phil? ;-)

    • on June 6, 2014 at 6:38 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Look forward to seeing the video of you in action on your blog, Sally! One of these days… :)

  5. on June 4, 2014 at 7:10 am dontboilthesauce

    That is very impressive Celia!
I know the theory but the practical eludes me, even though I have a certificate from clown school that also says I can stilt walk…….I can’t.
Look forward to seeing juggling loaves.
    Cheers
    Jason

You went to clown school, Jase? What did that entail? Sounds amazing! Can you do balloon animals as well? :)

  6. on June 4, 2014 at 7:30 am Jo

I’m impressed with any skill at juggling cause I’ve never been able to do it (and your video made me giggle). I’ll show the kids so they can learn.

    • on June 6, 2014 at 6:39 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

My sons aren’t interested! Maybe when your mother can sort of juggle, it’s no longer cool.. :D

  7. on June 4, 2014 at 8:18 am Claire @ Claire K Creations

    I think you’re quite a pro Celia!

    • on June 6, 2014 at 6:39 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

      You’re very kind, love x

  8. on June 4, 2014 at 8:23 am Manuela

You make juggling look so easy!

    • on June 6, 2014 at 6:40 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Thank you! It really isn’t all that hard, I just have trouble keeping it going – I can usually only manage a dozen tosses…

  9. on June 4, 2014 at 8:28 am Rose

Ha ha, love the flourish at the end!

    • on June 6, 2014 at 6:40 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Ha! You can see how relieved I was not to drop the balls! :)

  10. on June 4, 2014 at 9:11 am joanne

Celia, you have lorikeets??? The juggling was great. Will show the video to my husband who I’m fairly sure learned this in acting school, long ago. It will be yet another thing to impress our grandson when he comes at end of the month. Bravo!

    • on June 5, 2014 at 8:16 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Joanne, our neighbour has a flock of them living in his backyard tree! They make such a noise around 4pm! :)

  11. on June 4, 2014 at 9:27 am Francesca

I really enjoyed that short video of you. I can do two balls and that’s it for totally unco me.

    • on June 6, 2014 at 6:41 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

It’s really great fun if you ever want to try. Takes about 30 minutes to get the concept right, then it’s just practice! :)

  12. on June 4, 2014 at 10:13 am Maureen | Orgasmic Chef

You legend, you! When I first saw this on Instagram I was so jealous. Now with the instructional video, I have no excuse. :)

    • on June 6, 2014 at 6:41 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

      You go, girl! :)

  13. on June 4, 2014 at 10:21 am Jan

Oh I love that, that’s such fun Celia, it made me giggle. As soon as I get off this little island where there are no SHOPS (gasp) I’m going to get me three balls because I too have a grandson and granddaughters in mind for whom this would be fun – anything to turn their eyes away from square screens. It also occurs to me that it would be good for ageing brains (as well as little square brains) – not that I’m putting my hand up for an ageing one just yet….just thinking.

    • on June 6, 2014 at 6:42 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Jan, if you don’t want to buy them, you can make some using balloons – here’s the instructions. When I made them though, they turned out quite heavy…

  14. on June 4, 2014 at 10:34 am EllaDee

Many many years ago I could juggle 3 balls… always found it useful when entertaining visiting kids whose focus was hard to maintain, loved the idea of mastering juggling :)

    • on June 6, 2014 at 6:43 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

I’ve now had three friends try to talk me out of attempting clubs – might try rings instead! :)

  15. on June 4, 2014 at 10:58 am nancy@jamjnr

Did you watch Redesign My Brain? They reckon juggling is one of the best brain workouts you can do!

    • on June 5, 2014 at 8:16 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Nancy, someone else told me that yesterday! Some folks find it so easy to juggle, but I really have to concentrate..

  16. on June 4, 2014 at 2:19 pm theintolerantchef

Awesome job Celia! I’m very impressed indeed- there’s no way I could do that! I think you should master the unicycle for your next trick :) xox

    • on June 5, 2014 at 8:16 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Nope, no sense of balance – I’ve tried before.. :)

  17. on June 4, 2014 at 3:57 pm fergie51

From what I read, I think you spend half your life juggling! Not necessarily with little coloured balls. :)

    • on June 6, 2014 at 6:43 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Maree, there is quite a bit of that going on too.. :)

  18. on June 4, 2014 at 7:51 pm Jody

Yet another of your many skills Celia:)

    • on June 6, 2014 at 6:44 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Jody, you’re very kind, although “skill” is a very generous word in this context.. :)

  19. on June 4, 2014 at 7:54 pm thecompletebook

Oh wow, doubt I could juggle – you are so clever Celia.
    Have a wonderful day.
    :-) Mandy xo

    • on June 6, 2014 at 6:44 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Mandy, go on, have a go! It’s great fun. Your Pete might enjoy it too.. :)

  20. on June 4, 2014 at 9:08 pm hotlyspiced

We have a friend from Korea called Tiger who tried to teach us all to juggle. We were all bloody hopeless. I practised and practised and practised and did improve but it was nothing to brag about. Good luck to you! xx

    • on June 6, 2014 at 6:45 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Bet you’re much better at it than you let on, Charlie! :)

I loved seeing your video this morning!! What a cool talent to have, this looks way too tricky for me, I lack: 3 balls, dexterity and patience:D I must admit, I was looking over your shoulder at your garden as well.. it would be nice to go on a tour of that too! xx

    • on June 6, 2014 at 6:46 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Barb, we’ve done lots of garden posts – they’re all archived here (most recent ones at the bottom):

Oh how clever!! I’ve always wanted to do that.

      Have fun, Misky! :)

      • on June 6, 2014 at 11:44 pm Misky

        I’m hopeless!

  23. on June 5, 2014 at 4:41 am narf77

I could juggle some of the pumpkins that I have been trying to deal with, might make for some fun ;)

    • on June 6, 2014 at 6:47 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Fran, how many pumpkins did you end up with from your giant field of them? We’ve got eight “maturing” on the back deck.. :)

      • on June 6, 2014 at 9:54 am narf77

About 15 but they ranged from medium to teeny tiny and the rats/possums ate probably 3 times that many over the growing season. Note to self “Find where those possums are getting in!”

  24. on June 5, 2014 at 4:45 am Selma's Table

Brilliant Celia – love your little video and the instructional one is really detailed. I’m off to try with some oranges…

    • on June 6, 2014 at 6:47 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

      Cool! Have fun! :)

  25. on June 5, 2014 at 8:21 pm Nicole Robins

      hahaha…thanks love x

  26. on June 6, 2014 at 7:33 pm Stefanie

What fun Celia, perfect post going to send this to my nephew who once asked me to teach him to juggle but I had no clue!

  27. on June 7, 2014 at 1:38 pm Sally

You’ve reminded me of a time when KP was obsessed with juggling and our house was strewn with juggling balls. Well done – another string to your bow and thanks for taking me down memory lane.

  28. on June 8, 2014 at 12:28 pm marilynscottwaters

Just when I thought you couldn’t get any cooler… (And I totally heard calliope music in my head when you were juggling.) :-)

  29. on June 10, 2014 at 12:21 am tableofcolors

That is great! I have never been a great juggler…but perhaps with some practice… :)
