Nutella Doughnuts

June 6, 2014 by Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

The daily ebb and flow of life often requires us to make lots of decisions.

That can be tough on us adults, but even harder on teenagers. So on Sunday morning, I told Small Man that there was only one decision he needed to make that day.

Did he want his doughnuts filled with Nutella, blood plum jam, or plain?

He decided that he’d like them plain, and then proceeded to eat six of them. The Nutella ones weren’t wasted though – Lil and Luca around the corner made short work of them…

When life gets complicated, I’d recommend making doughnuts (the recipe is here). Then, as Small Man did, you can make a carefully considered decision on how you’d like to eat them!

These look absolutely phenomenal! Check out my raspberry ones on my blog if your passing!

    • on June 6, 2014 at 6:54 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Ryan, I had a look but couldn’t find them? Raspberry doughnuts sound amazing.. :)

      • on June 6, 2014 at 6:59 am rm32

Apologies I must have just left it in draft form there is a Victoria sandwich recipe featuring raspberries just on!

        • on June 6, 2014 at 7:06 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

          Cool, I’ll have a look! Thanks! :)

  2. on June 6, 2014 at 12:58 am frugalfeeding

Those look so tempting. I would no doubt eat many, many, many… Well, you get the idea.

    • on June 6, 2014 at 6:54 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Hahaha…my three men eat them hand over fist as well.. :)

  3. on June 6, 2014 at 1:01 am sallybr

He did not choose Nutella! Well, I am a bit shocked and appalled. Not sure I can recover from this virtual hit. Why, oh, why would he walk away from Nutella?

that question shall haunt me for years.

    • on June 6, 2014 at 6:55 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Far be it for me to question the one decision he was making that day.. hahaha

  4. on June 6, 2014 at 1:02 am Glenda

Life is so complicated. I would like one day not to make a decision.

    • on June 6, 2014 at 6:55 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Yep. You and me both, love x

  5. on June 6, 2014 at 1:23 am MamaD1xx4xy

I would love for that to be my only decision for the day! I would definitely go for the Nutella filled donuts!

    • on June 6, 2014 at 6:56 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

See, I’d pick the jam ones myself.. :)

  6. on June 6, 2014 at 1:42 am cecilia

    very cool!!.. lovely Mama.. c

    • on June 6, 2014 at 6:56 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

    YUM :) Happy Day Indeed!

    • on June 6, 2014 at 6:56 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Homemade doughnuts make every day better! Have a great weekend, Renee!

  8. on June 6, 2014 at 4:07 am Karen

Decisions, decisions, I’ll take one of each…that was easy. :D

    • on June 6, 2014 at 6:56 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

We all love an easy decision! :)

  9. on June 6, 2014 at 4:12 am Lorraine @ Not Quite Nigella

Hehe what a pleasure to only have to make one decision and that it is donut related! :P

    • on June 6, 2014 at 6:57 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Yep! Nothing life changing or difficult, just..pick a doughnut.. :)

  10. on June 6, 2014 at 4:13 am Maureen | Orgasmic Chef

You’re a considerate mama and sometimes just choosing which donut you want is all the decision making you want to make in one day. :)

    • on June 6, 2014 at 7:01 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

I think sometimes it’s nice to have permission to NOT make any decisions on a day. Does that make sense? :)

  11. on June 6, 2014 at 4:59 am The Life of Clare

Sometimes a decision like that is the toughest thing! These look so good.

    • on June 6, 2014 at 7:02 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Then that’s easy Clare, you can have one of each! :)

  12. on June 6, 2014 at 5:00 am themateriallady

I think I would have to have gone for a mix – they all sound so good!

    • on June 6, 2014 at 7:02 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Plenty to go around Kim, you’d be welcome to all three! :)

      • on June 6, 2014 at 6:56 pm themateriallady

It is a fair way to come but The Management is threatening a trip ‘Down Under’ for the next cricket tour so take care – I might just try and come for a sample! (You are probably safe – Australia is a big place)

  13. on June 6, 2014 at 5:01 am How to Philosophize with Cake

Those look amazing! So sweet that you made donuts for him, sounds like a great treat. :) That nutella ooze is making me hungry though :D

    • on June 6, 2014 at 7:03 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

The doughnuts were a byproduct in a way – I was making faux brioche and had extra dough. It’s really easy if you want to give it a go – here’s the basic dough recipe and it can be used for a multitude of bready things…

  14. on June 6, 2014 at 6:22 am EllaDee

Plain wasn’t an option that occurred to me. Donuts are my treat when we go the The Grounds of Alexandria on weekends… 1 nutella and 1 jam…mmmmm.

    • on June 6, 2014 at 7:05 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

      Easy decision! :)

  15. on June 6, 2014 at 6:28 am Jo

Happy Birthday to me and the first present of the day is that glorious photo of a doughnut with Nutella innards. I’ll happily share doughnuts with Small Man if he’s going to leave the Nutella ones.

    • on June 6, 2014 at 7:05 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Happy birthday, Jo!! Have a fabulous day! xxx

  16. on June 6, 2014 at 7:29 am teawithhazel

i’m with your son..plain for me..although jam would be good too..by the way they look amazing celia..

    • on June 13, 2014 at 6:43 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Jane, we have so much surplus jam in the house, that I’m always looking for ways to use it up. Piping it into doughnuts can make a dent on the stores! :)

  17. on June 6, 2014 at 7:32 am Nic

and Lil and Luca’s parents managed to also steal one! They were fabulous. Great size too.

    • on June 13, 2014 at 6:44 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

They’re not churros yet, but I’m working on it! :)

  18. on June 6, 2014 at 7:34 am Elizabeth

They look fantastic and not hard to make, I am so going to try these!

    • on June 13, 2014 at 6:44 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Hooray! Hope you like them, Liz! :)

  19. on June 6, 2014 at 7:57 am Jane @ Shady Baker

Wow Celia…these look amazing! The boys in your house are well looked after x

    • on June 13, 2014 at 6:45 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Jane, you’d find these a doddle to make, if you haven’t already done so. Whenever I shape lots of small balls of dough, I think of you and that massive batch of tiny rolls you did ages ago.. :)

  20. on June 6, 2014 at 8:15 am theintolerantchef

Well Celia, I think you’re quite cruel actually. Just one decision- but what a tough decision! It would have taken me all day to choose as I would have dithered and swung between such deliciousness. I think I might even need a lie-down after such mental strain in the morning xox

    • on June 13, 2014 at 6:45 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Hahaha…no problems, sweet, you can just have one, two or more of each! :)

  21. on June 6, 2014 at 10:47 am narf77

Or you could NOT make doughnuts and just get a spoon and eat the nutella from the jar…just sayin’ ;)

    • on June 13, 2014 at 6:45 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

I’m amazed how many commenters are saying that.. :)

      • on June 13, 2014 at 4:39 pm narf77

A sad indictment of how hard it is to make doughnuts and how easy it is to eat nutella with a spoon and how lazy we all are ;)

  22. on June 6, 2014 at 11:29 am Kari @ bite-sized thoughts

Those are the sorts of decisions that makes life good :) What a lovely way to simplify things, and what a great set of choices he had!

    • on June 13, 2014 at 6:46 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Kari, making easy decisions is empowering, I reckon. It’s like something you can check off a mental “to-do” list.. :)

  23. on June 6, 2014 at 1:17 pm Danielle L

Wow, I think I just found my special Friday night dessert! I’ve also just posted an In My Kitchen post for June – thanks again for hosting!

    • on June 13, 2014 at 6:47 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Danielle, hope you enjoy them! A full batch does make quite a lot of doughnuts – be warned – we usually have to call in eaters! :)

  24. on June 6, 2014 at 1:55 pm Tandy | Lavender and Lime

Today, I want to be faced with these decisions as well!

    • on June 13, 2014 at 6:47 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

May all your decisions today be straightforward and simple! xx

  25. on June 6, 2014 at 2:30 pm Platanos, Mangoes and Me!

I am sending this post to my goddaughter. Enough said.

    • on June 13, 2014 at 6:47 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Thanks Norma, hope she enjoys it! x

  26. on June 6, 2014 at 2:56 pm Liz

Yum, and I’m supposed to be on a diet. It’s a good thing that photos aren’t fattening. I like making doughnuts with holes–two doughnuts for the price of one. My grandpa used to be able to smell doughnuts from a mile away. He would arrive about the time the third load was out of the fryer.

    • on June 13, 2014 at 6:48 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Liz, that’s too funny – having a sixth sense for doughnuts is straight out of Peanuts and Garfield comics! :)

  27. on June 6, 2014 at 3:59 pm Madge

What a very wise post Celia. Thank you.

    • on June 13, 2014 at 6:48 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

      Thanks Madge! xx

  28. on June 6, 2014 at 5:10 pm Chica Andaluza

Have never made doughnuts – time to put that right!

    • on June 13, 2014 at 6:49 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Tanya, I’ve never met anyone who doesn’t love these! They don’t come out of the deep fryer overly oily either!

  29. on June 6, 2014 at 6:19 pm sabaribook

You have such amazing recipes!I love to follow your blog and learn how to make different types of jams! :)

    • on June 6, 2014 at 6:35 pm sabaribook

And it would be wonderful you to upload different types of doughnuts and crackers and bread recipes :) I am looking forward to many such “decisions” :)

      • on June 13, 2014 at 6:49 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

        Thanks for stopping by! :)

  30. on June 6, 2014 at 7:09 pm gourmetgetaway

Small Man and I have something in common…I’ll do the same exact thing. Smell the freshly baked doughnuts, break it with my fingers, and voila! Savor the goodness of the filling and the dough!

    • on June 13, 2014 at 6:40 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Julie, these are really very easy to make, and my boys eat them hand over fist! I reckon your kids would love them! :)

      • on June 13, 2014 at 7:20 am gourmetgetaway

I will have to try them for sure :-)

  31. on June 6, 2014 at 7:31 pm Stefanie

I’m not even a huge fan of doughnuts but my goodness they look delicous! We don’t usually buy Nutella at home as I have no control and eat it by the spoonful. Hubby recently bought a jar and was horrified to see how much of it I had eaten…as I started to read your post I thought it was a very serious question you were going to ask :)

    • on June 13, 2014 at 6:41 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Stefanie, it WAS a serious question! The only decision of the day, but it just wasn’t a difficult one at all, and there was no wrong answer! :)

  32. on June 6, 2014 at 9:17 pm Lisa the Gourmet Wog

Oooooh Celia naughty naughty. Now why did you go posting this? Huuuuuge cravings happening here, ive resorted to nutella straight out of the jar because I’m just too tired to actually make something right now lol

    • on June 13, 2014 at 6:42 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Hahaha…you’re allowed to do that when you’re very pregnant, Lisa! :)

  33. on June 6, 2014 at 10:42 pm Kylie Pickett

Im agreeing with Lisa the gourmet wog……this is not a post I should be reading at half past ten at night- total doughnut and nutella cravings!!! Must make these….lucky boys to have these ‘whipped’ up….yum Celia xxx

    • on June 13, 2014 at 6:42 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Thanks Kylie! I do love making them, but try to keep it to just an infrequent treat, or they all make themselves sick on them! :)

  34. on June 7, 2014 at 5:56 am Joanna

Brian likes plain ones too, don’t put stuff in the middle he said, they don’t need it :)

    • on June 13, 2014 at 6:43 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

He’d be more than welcome here then, as Pete and Small Man agree with him completely!

  35. on June 7, 2014 at 7:48 am @ChristineSalins (FoodWineTravel)

Such very difficult choices in your household Celia!

    • on June 13, 2014 at 6:50 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Hahaha…we try to keep things simple, Chris! :)

  36. on June 7, 2014 at 8:28 am hotlyspiced

Small Man is very blessed to have a mother like you! There’s always something wonderful coming from your kitchen. I have never made doughnuts, let alone doughnuts filled with choices! The image of your doughnut is very tempting xx

    • on June 13, 2014 at 6:50 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Charlie, they’re delicious, but not sure you’d get them past your health conscious older ones! Alfie and Carl though might love them! :)

  37. on June 7, 2014 at 1:39 pm Sally

What a lovely Mum you are Celia. PS Jam please :)

    • on June 13, 2014 at 6:51 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Thanks darling, yes noted, come now, I’ll fill yours for you when you arrive! :)

  38. on June 7, 2014 at 11:04 pm JJ - 84thand3rdj

That is quite possibly the best advice ever for when life gets difficult. In other news I think I need to make doughnuts, I’ll be eating them with both chocolate and jam, because I can :)

    • on June 13, 2014 at 6:52 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

JJ, easy decision, made! I was thinking they’d be REALLY nice filled with custard too.. :)

  39. on June 8, 2014 at 1:22 am Daisy Chain Feasts

Wow.. I had a delicious nutella brioche this morning, and then went looking for a way to recreate – these might work perfectly!

    • on June 13, 2014 at 6:52 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Daisy, I use the same dough to make a “faux” brioche, so it might work well for what you’re after!

  40. on June 8, 2014 at 9:46 am Jan

What a lovely mantra to have – when life gets complicated…make doughnuts. If I were a fairy godmother that would be the kind of spell I should cast – that Small Man’s decisions will always be comforting ones.

    • on June 13, 2014 at 6:53 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Thanks darling Jan, I hope his decisions will always be comforting ones too.. xx

  41. on June 8, 2014 at 10:11 am francine@lifeinthefoodlane

oohhhhh beam me up and give me some! Those doughnuts look too good to be in the picture only: they should be on my plate! I will attempt the recipe, but doubt they’ll come out as divine-looking as yours!

    • on June 13, 2014 at 6:53 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Fran, the recipe works really well and is fun to make – yours will be brilliant! :)

  42. on June 9, 2014 at 8:23 pm Sophie33

I made these tasty beauties & my friends & I all loved them so much! They are so tasty & just wonderful too! xxx

    • on June 13, 2014 at 6:53 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Yaaay! Thanks for trying them Sophie! x

      • on June 13, 2014 at 7:49 am Sophie33

        😊😊

  43. on June 10, 2014 at 7:58 pm fergie51

Hi Celia, thinking of doughnuts to take for special morning tea at work. How do you reckon they’d last if made night before. I’m tending to think just before serving would be preferable. They look amazing!

    • on June 10, 2014 at 8:36 pm Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

Maree, they’re really best on the day they’re made, if possible. Have fun with them! :)

  44. on June 11, 2014 at 1:49 pm cityhippyfarmgirl

    these look wickedly good Celia!

    • on June 13, 2014 at 6:40 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

      Thanks Brydie! :)

  45. on June 17, 2014 at 12:01 am Paul (@TheCityLane)

You had me at Nutella. These look awesome!

    • on June 17, 2014 at 6:03 am Celia @ Fig Jam and Lime Cordial

      Thank you! :)
