In My Kitchen November 2015 is now closed.
Please join us again in December!
. . . . .
In my kitchen…
…was a fresh Australian salmon. This large 70cm fish cost just $31 from Costco. We roasted it very simply, stuffed with fresh garden herbs, and seasoned with butter, salt and freshly ground black pepper…
In my kitchen…
…there is always chocolate! Dark hazelnut praline pieces and our favourite chestnut flour brownies…
In my kitchen…
…is a piece of labradorite, photographed from two angles. It has a stunning blue iridescence in the right light. And it’s named after the district of Labrador in Canada, not the dog breed…
In my kitchen…
…are two very grotty enamel roasters. I use them twice a week to bake bread in, and because I’m lazy, I never bother washing them. It doesn’t impact at all on their performance…
As so many of my fellow bakers know, baking sourdough in these covered pots is the easiest way to get a fabulous loaf every time…
In my kitchen…
…is my collection of Juan and Olivia’s steampunk owls. I keep buying them as gifts, and then end up keeping them for myself. Each one has a distinct personality…
In my kitchen…
…is peeled roasted beetroot, grown by our neighbour Mark…
I blitzed it with a clove of garlic, olive oil, salt and a pinch each of cumin, coriander and sweet paprika. It makes a delicious dip…
In my kitchen…
…is Saturday morning bread! I tend to get a little carried away on the weekends…
In my kitchen…
…was a very simple midweek dinner – fresh sourdough and whatever else we could rummage up from the fridge. Ella Dee calls these picnic dinners, and it’s a great name! She gave me the delicious macadamias, and the jamon offcuts were a gift from our friend Johnny…
Finally, in my kitchen…
….are sidecar cocktails. The first batch for spring!

Love the food you have in your kitchen. Have a great weekend :-)
Beautiful fish! I saw trout on my own Costco trip this past week but didn’t buy one, now I will have to go back. Gorgeous bread Celia, the owls are so cute. I would have difficulty giving them away as well.
Lazy is not a word I would use to describe you. Happy November.
Wow! That blue crystal is stunning!! And of course, wonderful bread, perfect with that gorgeous dip :)
Obviously, ALL is well in your kitchen:) LOVE it. Thanks.
What a relief that you have chocolate always in your kitchen Celia, the thought of it not being there just doesn’t bear thinking about.
Very impressed you don’t wash your bread pans. I hear this is the best way of going on from other bakers, but every time I think I’ll try not washing my bread tin, I can’t quite bring myself to do it.
Love the owls.
There is a name for that kind of picnic dinner in Italy – “mangiare asciutto” – which means ‘eating dry’, or in other words, an uncooked meal. It is just what’s required some nights x
Celia: When my girls were growing up, every Friday was “Feast Night”.
We collected all the leftovers from that week and cooked them up.
It wasn’t long before all their friends in the neighbourhood joined us for our “Feast”.
It was great!
They ate things at my house they would never eat at home!
Alas, I have barely been in my kitchen this week. But now I am inspired to get back there. Waiting on enough Brazilian cherries to ripen at once to make this year’s jelly. It is the most glorious colour. I can pick some of the fruit from my bathroom window! And, in my kitchen there is always a huge bowl of macadamia nuts waiting to be cracked, and many more lying on the ground outside waiting to be collected, lots of lovely eggs from our chickens, pots of homemade vege stock and chicken stock concentrate, and lemon butter.
The foccaccia looks so tempting there, waiting to be cut. The salmon looks so good too, simple treatments are the best for a fine fish like this. Must get back into using my enamel pots for sourdough or the romertopf- you have reminded me.
I now have roaster regret… I had the opportunity to get one ‘free’ with a magazine subscription but decided I needed neither, particularly as I have limited kitchen storage space and there’s only so much I can justify stashing under the bed. Nevertheless the possibilities of your roaster bread look amazing. As does everything else in your kitchen. We always have the makings of a picnic dinner on hand. Your styling is more elegant, and I shall endeavor to emulate :)
Lovely roundup, thanks Celia. I cook my bread in my Le Crueset covered bakers and don’t wash them either – they look very similar inside!
Thank you for your wonderful post Celia, just the distraction I needed as I write school reports. I am currently making bread in my Le Crueset cast oven pot in the oven so that we have some fresh bread to eat for a late breakfast this morning..your pictures inspired me! Next I will have to try your brownies..they look delicious. Have a wonderful week and hope Small Man is going well with his HSC exams.
Ann☀️
Well, in my kitchen now is a bag of sour dough starter, being mailed from Australia, I wonder who that kitchen fairy was????
Yaay, it arrived! I hope you have fun with it! :)
I sure will, thank you so so so much
That salmon was a great Buy Celia! Whenever I see your bread & chocolate, my mind twists the two together.. Next time make a choc hazelnut & orange focaccia & share your results with us… You’ll be blown away. X
Your owls are gorgeous and that salmon – so fresh and shiny looking. YUM! c
I’m going to bake a loaf of sourdough today, and instead of using bannetons for a change I think I’ll try baking it in a pot – I like experimenting!
Our house is empty of chocolate at the moment, those sweets look so good!
Here is my post for In My Kitchen this month: http://www.saylittlehen.com/2015/11/in-my-kitchen-november-2015.html
Sarah x
Sarah, you were Chantilly Fleur before, is that right? And I hope you enjoy the pot baking as much as I do! :)
Yes I was – I recently update/re-branded my blog :-)
Celia, that fish is so fresh, my goodness, love how shiny and beautiful it is. Sounds like you’ve had a busy month again… Happy baking lovely.
Here is my post for the month http://www.bizzylizzysgoodthings.com/blog/in-my-kitchen-november-2015 xxx
We definitely are heading into cocktail season. I love all your baked bread. How lovely to be given that beetroot and I do love beetroot dip. I do love a picnic dinner – we had one last night as we were out at a thing and were expecting to be fed but weren’t so came home and at 11pm made up one of these picnic dinners – when you’re ravenous, they’re the best xx
Oh Celia you are so brave! I got as far as the front door of Costco once and it just did my head in. I’d hate to see what would happen if I actually entered, just seemed like a lot of frenzied zombies over consuming. You obviously have a knack of finding the ‘pick of the crop’ purchases. Everything looks beautiful as usual. Cheers, Maree.
The colour of that crystal is stunning. I fed Lucy Too yesterday so I’m going to bake sourdough this week I’m determined. Sunday nights are ‘picnic’ nights here usually – I love throwing everything on a big board and then we spend a couple of hours picking it over watching a movie :)
I’m definitely going to be trying your praline and brownie recipes out. They look divine. I’ve been doing lots of bread baking lately too. I cook most of my bread in my Le Creuset pots. Makes for a deliciously crusty, chewy loaf.
Here’s my INK post:

Salmon is one of my favorite fish and I would love to delve into that one right now… well after you roast it. I gave my sourdough starter a good feed before I left for Ireland, your sourdough always looks so amazing. I may need to find an enamel dish like yours as my le creuset is taking a bit of hammering. Beautiful stone Celia which I am sure is a pleasure to look at :)

Gorgeous salmon – a pal of mine just bough an antique fish kettle which she is never going to use. She’s dropping heavy hints that I should give it a test run! Love the stone, so beautiful! And gorgeous bread as ever…my starter defrosted and perked up this week so have already baked a couple of loaves now we’re (thankfully!) back in England :) Big hug x

Looks lovely as always. Your “picnic” meal looks much like our Friday night movie night carpet picnic. The Owls do indeed all have unique personalities!
Just got my post up live!

How cute are those owls Celia! I would not be able to depart from them either :-) Your enamel roasters caught my eye as well as did your cocktails. Cheers to November xx

A nice little tour. We had a picnic lunch inthe loungeroom yesterday – it’s the only way to go when the weather warms up. TLucky you receiving gifted beetroot.
I’ve missed baking – we are down to a couple of bread rolls and one focaccia in the freezer. Audrey is still bubbling but it seems so sad each time I feed her that have to throw away the starter!
We have been roasting baby beets from the farmers market almost every week. And I love that you don’t wash your enamel roasters {I hate washing up}.
Here is my IMK post for this month: http://goodfoodweek.com.au/2015/11/life-whats-in-my-kitchen-6/
That piece of labradorite is beautiful. I’ve not seen that before, and the colour is stunning. I finally baked my first loaf in my cast iron dutch oven yesterday, and it did make a significant difference to the crust. Do you think enamel is better than cast iron, cause I need to get a bigger pot and I’m thinking that enamel might be cheaper. I have a few beetroot left in the garden. You’ve inspired me to roast them for dip.
I managed an IMK post this month ;) It’s now up at http://thecookspyjamas.com/in-my-kitchen-november-2015/
I adore beetroot, and the lovely stuff grown by your neighbour looks amazing, Celia.
Very nice. But I can’t get over that gorgeous salmon…
Salmon and Side Cars and Steampunk owls, oh my! Celia, this is one of the reasons I love IMK — so diverse, so FUN! That said, I’ll be sitting out this month (spent the last half of October trying to shake a “bug”) but I’m also looking forward with great curiosity to see what everybody else has going on! Thank you for throwing in bread and chocolate, too, and that gorgeous glowing cobalt blue rock. Take care, my sweet!
I’ve never heard of Labradorite before such gorgeous colours. That salmon is sensational. I was just thinking that I need to try out some new cocktails the other day so your side car is inspiring. Thank you for hosting IMK here is my contribution for this month.

I could never tell you what is in my kitchen this month, it’s incredibly boring. I want to live in your kitchen! How lovely with collections of owls and chocolate and breads to love! And your beets.. oh my gosh the color is incredible!xx
Beetroot is one of my all time favourite veggies. It has such an earthy taste and would be so delicious in the dip. The salmon looks too beautiful to eat. I only had salmon fillets, but may well check out the whole fish in the market next week. My contribution is here

I’m sure my Mum didn’t wash her enamel pans very well and she used them for roasting! The best roast potatoes and parsnips. Now Googling ‘sidecar’ – need to toast to virtually :) Have not been in my kitchen much during October so here’s in and out http://mycustardpie.com/2015/11/03/in-and-out-of-my-kitchen/

My but that does look like a very fresh salmon – one of my favorite fish. I love the colors and the way they reflect in that piece of labradorite. It seems as though the light is coming from within.
Now, Celia, you’ve got me thinking…I think I have a roasting pan like that up in the attic (of course) and now you’re going to send me on a scavenger hunt I think.
Oh – how I LOVE the jewelry you collect. Those owls are fabulous and I can’t think of a more worthy recipient than YOU!
I always love seeing your chocolate and bread! That beetroot dip sounds great too.
I’ve just done my IMK post :) http://www.bitesizedthoughts.com/2015/11/in-my-kitchen-november-2015.html
