Some photos from last weekend…

I baked a batch of Nick Malgieri’s supernatural brownies for our neighbours Shaun and Michelle. Poor darlings have had a hard week, and chocolate always helps…

My friend Dave convinced me to buy Andy Harris’ A Month in Marrakesh.  This simple breakfast recipe of boiled egg, chopped boiled potato, olive oil, salt and cumin was a delicious start to the weekend…

Remember my new baking stones from this month’s In My Kitchen post?

They worked so well that I bought two more for the bottom shelf.  Now I can bake looong loaves!  These ones are filled with roasted garlic…

…and these are a high hydration ciabatta dough…

A simple birthday cake for Pete’s brother, Uncle Steve, made by baking the yoghurt cake recipe in a 20cm/8″ round pan, sandwiching it with Pete’s raspberry jam, and topping it with a vanilla buttercream frosting.  The nasturtiums are from the garden…

Our bishop’s crown chillies are ripening! These gorgeous bells are sweet with a medium heat.  They were perfect in our eggplant curry last night…

And finally, a new cartoon resides on our fridge, taken from today’s Sun Herald…

Any exciting happenings at your place last weekend?

In my kitchen…

…are colanders of crabapples, picked when we visited Pete’s Uncle Bob and Aunt Robin in Mudgee.  The boys stood on the tray of Uncle Bobby’s ute (truck) to pick them from the old tree in the front yard…

Pete turned the fruit into eight jars of delicious crabapple jelly

In my kitchen…

…are baskets of Anarel Garlic and homegrown onions.  We’re not particularly adept at growing onions, but it was nice to find a few in the garden…

In my kitchen…

…are new kitchen gadgets.  Last year I killed my mini food processor and Pete destroyed my handheld blender.  I replaced both with bright orange Cuisinart…

In my kitchen…

…is a basket of miniature toys that Small Girl and Little T play with when they come to visit.  It will keep them content and sitting at the dining room table for an hour, which is long enough for the grown-ups to have a cup of tea and a chat…

In my kitchen…

…are these gorgeous Cambodian bamboo bowls that Pete’s sister Katey gave me for Christmas.  Isn’t it just the most beautiful shade of red?

In my kitchen…

…are two large rectangular pizza stones.  I’ve searched for these for a long time, and was very excited to come across them at Victoria’s Basement

They fit neatly side by side in my 90cm free-standing Smeg oven, and provide a large continuous baking surface (they’re both the same size, please excuse the fish-eye effect in the photo)…

In my kitchen…

…are paper liners which fit my loaf tins perfectly.  I also found these at Victoria’s Basement and they were relatively inexpensive ($6 for 40)…

They made the latest batch of tiger cakes just that little bit easier…

Happy New Year!

This year, we’re moving our In My Kitchen posts to the first of each month, to give everyone who wants to join in the entire month to do so.

In my kitchen…

…are imported treats – French chestnuts, Italian mayonnaise and Lyle’s Golden Syrup…

In my kitchen…

…are two new cookbooks that I bought myself for Christmas.  I bought two copies of the Nick Malgieri book – one for Maude and one for myself.  Abby  tempted me with recipes from Bake! all last year, so I finally indulged…

In my kitchen…

…are two bottles of Pete’s vanilla syrup, made with the empty pods leftover from our vanilla sugar

In my kitchen…

…are a few pickings from the garden.  Our cucumber plants are starting to pick up steam…

In my kitchen…

…is a container of rosemary salt.  It adds a magical zing to roast potatoes…

In my kitchen…

…is a bag of quince green tea and a jar of marinated baby (Persian) figs, a gift from our friends Andrea and Chris…

In my kitchen…

…is a jar of Kampot pepper, which Pete’s sister Katey brought back for me from Cambodia.  It smells amazing!

In my kitchen…

…is a bouquet of scented gardenias from Lisa’s garden…

We haven’t grown gardenias for years, and I’d forgotten how beautiful they were…

In my kitchen…

…is a jar of Ottolenghi strawberry jam.  Lisa bought it for me as a souvenir when she was in London and packed it in her husband’s shoe to bring it home.  Ernie wasn’t happy…

In my kitchen…

…are six new glasses, picked up for $1 each at the Turkish supermarket in Auburn. The design is moulded into the glass, rather than printed on…

In my kitchen…

…is a very special Christmas present from our friend Moo.  He flew in from Adelaide last week with this enormous box in his hand luggage…

Small Man opened it to find more than five kilos of huge, freshly picked South Australian cherries.  He was nearly speechless with excitement…

In my kitchen…

…are two new UK cookbooks – Dan Lepard’s Short & Sweet, and River Cottage Veg Everyday.

If you’re in Australia, New Zealand, South Africa or India and haven’t heard about the free shipping deal at Amazon UK, do have a look!  It’s currently running until mid-January 2012 and applies to orders over £25.  Make sure you select the free shipping option when you’re checking out…

In my kitchen…

…are Thumb Sumos, a gift from my little sister.  Maude’s three year old has figured out that she can pop them onto either her fingers or her toes…

…OR stick one sumo’s head inside the other one’s thumb hole! (Doesn’t he look smug?)

In my kitchen…

…is a chocolate chip cake, made to a recipe from the Green & Black cookbook.  The cake itself was quite ordinary, but the topping was wonderful…

I scattered over Moo’s magic sugar crystals, and they set like shards of polished glass…

In my kitchen…

…is this stunning French clay speculaas mould, a gift from our friend Maureen.  It’s finished to look like stained wood.  I haven’t figured out how to use it yet, so I’d be grateful for any tips…

In my kitchen…

…is a ginormous tin of sliced jalapeños.  We went to buy a small jar during our last visit to Harkola, and found one for $4.50.  Then we walked past this 2.8kg tin for $8…

In my kitchen…

…are the baby garlic bulbs that didn’t grow to a decent size this year.  They’re all under an inch in diameter.  We’ve been eating them up, and they’ve been delicious…

In my kitchen…

…is a little porcelain wren, or at least that’s what Pete thinks it is.  It’s a gift for my mother…

In my kitchen…

…is a bowl of salt roasted almonds.  The process turns their shells papery crisp and gives them a delicious, addictive taste.  We buy some every year to add to our Christmas hampers…
