Folks, can I ask a favour this month? If you do an In My Kitchen post, could you please also make a point of reading and commenting on a few of the other IMK posts as well? (I know many of you already do this, thank you!)

As the gathering picks up momentum, it’s hard for us to get to every post, but it’s always lovely to have a virtual cup of tea with a few of our fellow bloggers! Thanks! xx

. . . . .

In my kitchen…

…are the most gorgeous lilies ever, a gift from my neighbours Brett and Liz. They’ve flowered continuously for ten days, scenting the room with their sweet perfume…

In my kitchen…

…is a very special bag of Amedei callets, a belated birthday present from my friend Tania

I used the 70% cacao drops in our favourite River Cottage chocolate cake, but we’ve also been eating them straight out of the packet…

In my kitchen…

…is Bobotie! After reading about this traditional dish on Tandy’s blog, I asked my South African neighbour Brett about it, and he made me some to try. I was so excited that I had to hop onto Twitter to tell Tandy and Mandy about it straight away…

It’s absolutely delicious, and a completely different flavour to any savoury mince dish I’ve tried before. Brett’s beef mince and sultana version  is seasoned with garlic, curry powder, chutney, Worcestershire sauce, turmeric, vinegar and apricot jam. Here’s the recipe that he used…

In my kitchen…

…are new Turkish plates, bought with birthday money from my folks. They’re handpainted in food safe glazes, and we believe the little lip is meant to be a pouring spout. I bought the set from Moya at Turkuaz Motif (their new shop is at 127 Willoughby Road, Crows Nest)…

In my kitchen…

…were milk and dark Easter chocolates. I only made a few this year, but Small Man helped with the eggs, so it was a real family affair…

In my kitchen…

…is our third attempt at char siu. This batch was a great success…

My sons ate the entire half a kilo’s worth at dinner, so the only photos I have are these ones taken at night under the fluoro lights.

I used the Gourmet Traveller recipe and followed the instructions exactly (I bought the fermented red bean curd in Flemington)…

In my kitchen…

…are treasures from Glenda and Maus’ Passion Fruit Garden kitchen – homemade red wine vinegar, homegrown pickled capers, and extra virgin olive oil from their trees. They were over for a visit from Perth, and Glenda carefully packed these goodies in her luggage for me…

. . . . .

Finally, in my kitchen…

…is the end of a looong quest to replace my worn out silicone spoons. Over the years, I’ve gone through half a dozen of these – the heads have eventually cracked, and the handles have splintered away from daily use.

I tried very hard to switch to wooden spoons, but just didn’t like the feel of them. Other silicone spatulas had handles that were too short, or heads that were too soft to really scrape food around in the wok. Eventually, I found these by Chasseur. They were perfect, and felt so much like the original, that I bought six of them.

In the photo below is the last of my original spoons (green) and the new blue and red Chasseur ones…

In my kitchen…

…is ice cream,  made with microwave custard, a handful of grated dark chocolate and crushed amaretti cookies. The mixture was churned in our 25 year old ice cream maker (it was a wedding present!)…

In my kitchen…

…are cayenne chillies from the garden, strung together on a thread. These thin-skinned chillies seem to dry well without going mouldy…

In my kitchen…

…is a gorgeous bunch of flowers, a gift from my friend El…

In my kitchen…

…is a red Le Creuset teapot, a birthday present from darling Terri…

In my kitchen…

…are two new season quinces, brought by Liz when she came over for lunch…

In my kitchen…

…is a chance find at a petrol station in North Ryde – a long, felt backed tile, perfect for use as a trivet (and reduced to $5)…

In my kitchen…

…is organic coconut flour, bought on a whim. Does anyone have suggestions on how to use it, please?  Thanks..

In my kitchen…

…are birthday treats from Lorraine – locally made peanut butter (seasoned with Murray River salt, no less), and a gift from Chile – olive oil and merquén spice mix. I was particularly thrilled to receive the latter…

In my kitchen…

…are the first harvests from our newly planted garden bed – a couple of perennial leeks, a little red amaranth, and some white-stemmed bok choy…

We also have new squash from the garden – after we picked the monster fruit, the plant started producing like crazy!

Happy New Year!

In my kitchen…

…are small bulbs of purple garlic, a gift from our friends Ian and Diana. They didn’t produce a commercial quantity this year, so they’re sharing what they did grow with friends…

In my kitchen…

…are three rounds of Linda’s homemade soap. We use it at our kitchen sink, and find our hands are all the better for it. Her bars are made with olive, macadamia and coconut oils – in addition, one has a luffa embedded in it (great for cleaning grubby garden hands), another has calendula, marshmallow and comfrey, and the third has lemon zest and oats…

In my kitchen…

…are my first ever Tupperware containers, a gift from my darling friend Carol, who had to listen all year to my moaning about not having airtight storage for cookies…

In my kitchen…

…is this beautiful natural fibre bowl, a gift from our neighbours Shaun and Michelle. It was handwoven in Addis Ababa from elephant grass, with all proceeds going to support the Hamlin Fistula Hospital in Ethiopia

In my kitchen…

…are snowy sugary balls of spicy deliciousness, unusual Persian sweets that gorgeous Becca the InTolerant Chef sent us for Christmas. We’ve been nibbling on them after dinner – the coriander seeds impart a very unique flavour…

In my kitchen…

…are gourmet goodies from our neighbours Nic and PeteV. I’m particularly looking forward to trying the ajvar…

In my kitchen…

…is our Evesham Gold water jug, which gets an airing every festive season…

In my kitchen…

…are gifts from Maude – for Pete, a bag of golden Basmati rice and bottles of Sutton apple juice…

…and for me, an insulated teapot, with bespoke crocheted handle cover…

In my kitchen…

…are fabulous presents from my blogger besties – Charlie’s snowman Christmas cake

Lorraine’s flavoursome herbed honey, and Tania’s delicious shortbreads…

In my kitchen…

…is a swirly silicon chocolate mould, a surprise present from my friend Mandy in South Africa, and felted wool coasters from Nepal, a gift from Marcela…

And finally, in my kitchen…

…is lovely Jo’s homemade granola! It’s chockful of healthy goodies, and makes a delicious start to the day…

In my kitchen…

…are the first two eggs laid by Amber. The new hens have been named (all will be revealed in a future post), and are settling well into the flock, but only Amber is laying at the moment. I can’t tell you how nice it is to have homegrown eggs again…

In my kitchen…

…are mulberries from our neighbours Liz and Brett’s enormous backyard tree…

We turned most of the bucket into four and a half jars of mulberry jam. It’s not a tidy process, as all the berries need to be stripped from the stem…

We like our berry jams quite firm (with the exception of strawberry) and very concentrated in flavour, but not overly sweet…

In my kitchen…

…there is always bread, but not always such a pleasing bread photo – this one was taken with the board on the kitchen floor in a beam of morning sunlight…

In my kitchen…

…is the first of our sweetheart cabbages for the season. As we also had a freshly laid egg, naturally we had to make coleslaw…

In my kitchen…

…is the newest Callebaut chocolate on sale at Chefs’ Warehouse

Unusually, it’s a blend of different origin chocolate from Tanzania, Ghana and Sao Thomé, and it’s a seriously dark 80%. Despite that, it tempers into a smooth, silky bar without any of the chalkiness that you sometimes find in higher cacao chocolate…

In my kitchen…

…are plump, fat vanilla beans from Tahiti – a gift from our friends Marcela and Stephen who visited the plantation last month…

In my kitchen…

…is caramel sauce. I normally wouldn’t buy sauce in a bottle, but this one only has two ingredients, caramelised sugar and water. And yes, I could make it, but I’m notorious for burning caramel

In my kitchen…

…is annatto paste. When I posted about our Mexican Chilli Paste, lovely Tania from My Kitchen Stories told me that I had to pick up some annatto paste next time I was at Fiji Market. I actually have no idea what I’m supposed to do with it – any suggestions?

In my kitchen…

…is Australian spanner crab meat bought frozen from Costco. Picked crab meat is very expensive here – this small 250g packet cost (from memory) about $16…

It made a very special Friday night pasta though, and the 250g was more than enough to feed the four of us…

Last week, my old friend Lisa rang to tell me how much she had enjoyed the August In My Kitchen posts. She’d been up early that morning, and had spent a couple of happy hours visiting kitchens from all over the world through the sidebar links. “Judy’s post even had a bear in it!”, she said.

A big thank you to everyone who opens up their kitchen and shares a little of it with us every month – it’s such a joy to see what’s happening in homes across the globe, and to realise that even though we all live in different countries, climates and cultures, kitchens everywhere are places filled with love and laughter. xx

. . . . .

In my kitchen…

…are colourful and delicious treats from Istanbul, gifts from our ever thoughtful neighbours PeteV and Nic…

In my kitchen…

…is a fresh batch of vanilla sugar, which I make regularly for Big Boy and Small Man – both like it in their English Breakfast tea…

In my kitchen…

…is a mountain of Italian pasta and remilled semolina flour (Semola Rimacinata di Grano Duro). The pasta was just a dollar a packet on special…

In my kitchen…

…are gift tags that my friend Margot brought back all the way from San Francisco for me…

In my kitchen…

…is a jar of Jimmy’s Saté Sauce – the secret ingredient behind many restaurants’ satay dishes, and one we’ve been cooking with for over twenty years. I’ll try and post a recipe in the near future…

In my kitchen…

…is five metres of muslin. I had so much trouble finding this a few years ago that darling Heidi sent me some from Ohio!  Of course, I should have just asked at Chefs’ Warehouse, which is where I bought this roll…

In my kitchen…

…are two and a half jars of homemade quince paste. We actually prefer making quince jelly, as we never manage to get the paste completely grit-free…

In my kitchen…

…are Korean sweet potato noodles. I have no idea how to prepare them yet…

Finally, in my kitchen…

…there is always chocolate. These crunchy hazelnut feuilletine bars are bagged up ready for my lunch with the girls tomorrow !
