This month’s IN MY KITCHEN is now closed!

Please join us again in November! ♥

In my kitchen…

…there are mooncakes! Handmade by Monkey Girl’s clever mum, they’re filled with lotus paste and a salted duck yolk. They’re the best I’ve ever tasted…

In my kitchen…

…is a set of Oxo pop top airtight containers. They work brilliantly! I bought them from Costco at a fraction of what it would have cost to buy each piece individually…

In my kitchen…

…are oodles of chocolate chip cookies. Small Man’s HSC exams start in less than two weeks, so I’m keeping the cookie jars full…

In my kitchen…

…are these stunning ranunculas, a gift from my cousin Gek…

In my kitchen…

…was a packet of Jamon Iberico. I found it hidden on the bottom shelf of the fridge, and the boys scoffed it for lunch with sourdough focaccia…

In my kitchen…

…is a shirt button. Who else but my Pete would bother to repair a broken button?

In my kitchen…

…is this beautiful Japanese bowl and plate that Mum bought 30 years ago at a David Jones sale. She gave it to me as a gift on my last visit home…

She also gave me these old Chinese snuff bottles, which are handpainted from the inside

In my kitchen…

…is a gold Japanese cup and saucer, a wedding present from 1989. I figured it was probably time to get it out and use it…

And speaking of vintage crockery, here’s my latest purchase from the Valentina Jones’ pendant collection. Gorgeous foodie jewellery made by a gorgeous friend…

In my kitchen…

…was a jar of Fiona’s apple scrap jelly. It was delicious on ham sandwiches….

In my kitchen…

…there is always chocolate. I’ve been making large dark chocolate plates with my ma’moul moulds

…and more small chocolate coins. Pete punched a hole in one of them and turned it into a pendant for Valentina…

Finally, in my kitchen…

…is a birthday present for Tiny Terri – her favourite chestnut flour brownies and a selection of dark chocolates…

. . . . .

This month’s IN MY KITCHEN is now closed!

Please join us again in October! ♥

. . . . .

In my kitchen…

…is a new porcelain tea bowl, handcrafted by Steve Sheridan in the Blue Mountains. It’s a magnificent gift from my sisters (in-law), Kate and Penny. I sip fennel tea from it every morning…

Whereas the one Pete bought me last month had a frog inside the bowl, this one has a turtle. It’s hard to see in the photo, but the back is delicately etched with hexagons to resemble a real turtle shell…

. . . . .

In my kitchen…

…is one of Beth’s ethically pasture raised chickens. It took me a few days to track down, but it was worth the effort…

. . . . .

In my kitchen…

…are two bags of Amedei chocolate callets, purchased from my friend Tania at Lario International. They’re essential for our World Peace Cookies

. . . . .

In my kitchen…

…is a large batch of spritz cookies for my mum – they’re her favourite…

. . . . .

In my kitchen…

…was a humungous basket of fruit and veg, an extremely generous gift from the wonderful Liz and Peter of Bizzy Lizzy’s Good Things

Thank you so much, Lizzy and Peter!

. . . . .

In my kitchen…

…is an adorable posy of little flowers from my lovely neighbours Jane and Bernie…

…and another from darling Penny and Kate. Both bunches were created and delivered by our clever friends at Little Flowers Sydney

. . . . .

In my kitchen…

…I’ve been making sourdough bagels. Each one is boiled (“kettled”) before baking…

I had one for breakfast, topped with pan fried mushrooms, jamon and edamame…

. . . . .

In my kitchen…

…is my weekend coffee fix – a double decaf macchiato with one sugar and a giant Nancy ice cube. Made with our Nespresso machine using EcoCaffe’s 100% biodegradable Decaf Supreme pods…

. . . . .

In my kitchen…

…there has been quite a lot of comfort food, including a recent batch of Römertopf beef and barley stoup

…and a wickedly good Thai red duck curry…

. . . . .

In my kitchen…

…was a huge batch of doughnuts. We made 65 in total, and they were all devoured the same day. We had a lot of help from friends and neighbours…

. . . . .

Finally, in my kitchen…is me! Wearing my new bargain priced progressive glasses (that’s multi-focals to us old people), bought online from Zenni Optical. Zenni have an interface that lets you upload a photo and then try thousands of pairs of glasses on. It’s great fun if nothing else!

My multifocals ended up costing me just A$110 delivered. The lenses aren’t quite as high quality as my (much) more expensive pair, but they’re perfectly fine and the frames are very comfortable to wear. Thanks for the headsup, Valentina!

Folks, I’m afraid there’s going to be a slight hiccup with the August IMK. We’re in the midst of some major family issues and I won’t have the time to link everyone up this month. Please still write your IMK posts (if you’d like to) and leave a link in the comments below so others can visit you. And please take the time to read and comment on each other’s posts, if you can. My sincere apologies for the inconvenience and thank you for your understanding.

. . . . .

In my kitchen…

…is a copy of the Oz Harvest cookbook. This is actually my second copy – I bought one at lunch with Lorraine and Jaqi, but gave it to my friend Lisa for her 50th birthday. So I ordered another one from their website

This wonderful organisation rescues surplus food and distributes it to other charities, who then use it to feed those in need. If you’d like to know more about Oz Harvest, have a look at Lorraine’s post here. And please consider supporting them – it’s incredibly rewarding to know that the two cookbooks I purchased will provide meals to more than 200 people. As an added bonus, the books were published and printed in Australia…

. . . . .

In  my kitchen…

…is a tinned peach tea cake. It’s my mother’s favourite…

. . . . .

In my kitchen…

…there will be scones this month! Don’t forget that Tandy at Lavender and Lime has taken over hosting International Scone Week, 10 – 16 August 2015. Please send your photos and blog links to her. I might make some more buttermilk scones this year – they’re Small Man’s favourite…

. . . . .

In my kitchen…

…is homemade chirashi sushi, with sustainably caught tuna and salmon purchased from Cleanfish Australia

. . . . .

In my kitchen…

… are prime cuts of venison, a generous gift from Monkey Girl’s family…

We combined two large pieces with fatty speck offcuts to add unctuousness to the delicious lean meat. After three hours of slow braising in the oven, it was meltingly tender and not at all gamey…

The following day, the leftovers were turned into a pie…

. . . . .

In my kitchen…

…is a large jar of homemade yellow bean dressing, a gift from my friend Dotti…

. . . . .

In my kitchen…

…is culinary gold – duck fat saved from our most recent roast duck dinner…

. . . . .

In my kitchen…

…is this stunning tea bowl, a gift from my Pete. It was handmade by Steve Sheridan in the Blue Mountains. After being formed on his potter’s wheel, Steve hand carved the grass stalk design, added the little frog inside, and finished the entire piece with a traditional celadon glaze. Amazingly, it’s dishwasher and microwave safe…

I feel like I’m sipping tea from a piece of art…

…..

I have to end this post with incredibly sad news – the beautiful Selma Jeevanjee of Selma’s Table, a member of our In My Kitchen family and avid sourdough baker, passed away last month after a long battle with cancer. May you rest in peace, my darling friend.

Elaine at Food Bod has suggested that we all bake a loaf of sourdough in Selma’s memory. I think she would have loved that idea.

. . . . .

Wishing you all the very best for August. ♥

This month’s IN MY KITCHEN is now closed!

Please join us again in June! ♥

. . . . .

In my kitchen…

…is an amazing bottle of limited edition vintage Dom Perignon 2004, a gift from our dear friend PeteA…

In my kitchen…

…is the only trombie to survive the massive hailstorm we had last week. The rest of the garden was shredded (more on that in the next post)…

In my kitchen…

…is Sarawak pepper, a gift from my cousin Lynette. I use both the black and white varieties…

In my kitchen…

…is Australian made Massel stock powders. Despite the chicken and beef labels, these are all vegetable based. Fran put me on to them last month. The vegetable stock is deliciously sweet and not overly salty…

In my kitchen…

…is a Laguiole cheese knife set from our neighbour El…

I love how each piece has the signature bee emblem built into it…

In my kitchen…

…are new season chestnuts. I’ve been roasting them and then stashing them in the freezer for future meals

In my kitchen…

…is another green chicken curry, this time using our trombie in place of eggplant. I cooked it in our small cazuela…

In my kitchen…

…is a silicone rolling pin, a gift from lovely Lorraine, and a new bread book. It’s rare for me to pick up a paper cookbook these days, but this one wasn’t available in e-book format…

I bought it specifically to try the French baguette recipe. Here’s my first attempt – it’s not perfect, but it wasn’t bad…

In my kitchen…

…is another batch of Pete’s magic praline, this time studded with roasted blanched hazelnuts. It’s very dark but not bitter. Pete now makes his caramel in the copper pot using just sugar (without adding any water)…

This month’s IN MY KITCHEN is now closed!

Please join us again in May! ♥

. . . . .

In my kitchen…

…were these gorgeously bright roses from my old friend Cate

In my kitchen…

…is…squeeal…a new Kenwood Chef! I bought it with a very generous gift card from Peters of Kensington that our friends R&M gave me, plus some birthday money from my mum. It’s seriously heavy duty – 1200 watt motor, die cast aluminium body and a 6.7litre mixing bowl. It also came with a mincer, a glass blender and a bonus ice cream maker.

My old Kenwood has now been passed on to a friend – after ten years of hard service, it was battle scarred and noisy, but still in reasonable working condition.

In my kitchen…

…are new Turkish ceramics. They’re actually trivets, but I like using them as coasters (they’re large enough that hot drinks don’t tip off the edge)…

In my kitchen…

…are gifts from the lovely Kay, all the way from Ireland. The shawl is beautifully soft and covered in a shamrock print…

In my kitchen…

…is a pressie from my mate Tanya of Chica Andaluza. I’ve wanted the Moro Cookbook for years, so it was an absolute joy to receive it from Tanya, who has inspired so much of my cooking lately…

In my kitchen…

…there are always mutant trombies! The dark green one was growing halfway down the driveway…

In my kitchen…

…are Easter chocolates. This year I have Marvel superheroes in milk…

…and dark chocolate eggs studded with roasted almond praline…

In my kitchen…

…is a present from darling Kavey in London – the chicken egg cup now has pride of place on our shelves…

In my kitchen…

…is a treasured parcel from my dear friend Jason at Don’t Boil the Sauce! He felt that my life was incomplete without my own set of disco balls and a Eurovision music CD…

In my kitchen…

…is a lovely gift from Annette – I have another cheese knife from the same set, so I was very chuffed to add to the collection…

In my kitchen…

…are Thai cooking ingredients, including pastes, sauces and my favourite pea eggplants – picked up on a recent visit to Sydney’s Thai Town…

In my kitchen…

…is a gift from Donna in Newy – how many people can say they received a pomegranate in the mail for their birthday? It was delicious too…

In my kitchen…

…was a surprise from the brilliant Becca…she sent me a bunch of flours!

In my kitchen…

…are hot cross buns. I’ve been baking both yeasted and sourdough ones, although the latter are definitely more popular (there was a dozen on the tray just minutes before the photo was taken)…

In my kitchen…

…is a beautiful set of large Japanese bowls, a gift from my mother…

When I mentioned to my mum that I was looking to replace some of our soup bowls (we’ve had a couple of breakages recently), she pulled this set out of her cupboard. Presented in a wooden box with a ceramic tile inlay, she’d been unable to resist buying them at a David Jones’ sale over a decade ago (obviously the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree!)…

Here’s a photo of the inside of the Japanese bowl…
