This month’s IN MY KITCHEN is now closed!

Please join us again in April! ♥

. . . . .

To all the wonderful folks who donated to Kim’s fundraiser in February – THANK YOU. Your generosity has made a huge difference!

Over the last month, Kim has been sending me lovely email updates with photos of their progress. She and Russ have bought a secondhand double trailer home and had it shipped to their spot by the lake (I’ll let Kim tell you all about that in her IMK post). And whilst they didn’t get to their target amount, they did raise enough money – mostly through IMK donations – to buy a brand new stove and a new refrigerator.

To understand how much of an impact your contributions have made, you should know that the stove and fridge might be the only new large appliances in their next home – they plan to replace nearly everything else with flea market and secondhand finds.

Kim sent me these photos to share with you. Here’s her stove being assembled…

Their brand new fridge…

And a sneak peek at their “old/new” house, mid-renovation. There will be lots more photos in her IMK post this month…

Again, to everyone who donated, thank you for your kind generosity!

. . . . .

In my kitchen…

…is a gift from my mad friend Nancy in Shanghai. I adored everything in my surprise parcel, from the wineglass rings to the Chinese New Year napkins to the ribbons and trims. I’m especially fond of the small enamel plates…

But my favourite is this Carrefour shopping bag, complete with Chinglish inscription…

In my kitchen…

…there is always bread. I was especially happy with how these banneton loaves turned out…

In my kitchen…

…were fresh lychees, a gift from the darling Monkey Girl for Chinese New Year. They were eaten on the same day…

In my kitchen…

…are Sidecar cocktails. They’re a fabulous Friday night drink…

In my kitchen…

…is a gift from lovely Jaqi – a gorgeous Valentina Jones pendant cut from a vintage ceramic plate. I’ve worn it twice already!

In my kitchen…

…are the last of this year’s snake beans. We’ve had a bumper crop…

In my kitchen…

…is a “shake the fridge” dinner (to borrow Bizzy Lizzy’s term) of leftover chorizo, potatoes, garden beans and boiled eggs. It was delicious and garlicky…

In my kitchen…

…was a tray of pulled pork. It’s now been portioned up and frozen for future meals…

In my kitchen…

…is a new cheese board, a gift from the wonderful Maureen, whom I finally met up with last week…

In my kitchen…

…are baked treats from Tart Sisters in Ashfield, which we visited on the advice of lovely Lorraine. Their lemon tart was particularly good…

And speaking of Lorraine, in my kitchen…

…are these fabulous Turkish goodies that she gave me. Pete demolished all the apricot nougat swirls in one sitting, and I can’t wait to try out the ras el hanout – it smells amazing!

In my kitchen…

…is Kevin’s chocolate platter. As I’ve mentioned previously, we’re now making these for all the upcoming 50th birthdays, but the selection varies each time. Kev’s present included our new truffle brownies, 50th birthday lollipops and card, dipped candied orange, assorted milk feuilletine and dark origin chocolate dragons. If you count them, you’ll find there’s exactly 50 pieces…

The In My Kitchen gathering has been up and running for a  number of years now, and it’s grown to over a hundred contributors. Not everyone posts monthly, which is just as well, as I’d never keep up with the listings if you did! But we’re all connected through an understanding that kitchens, regardless of location, are places of love and food and family and companionship.

Over the past few years, many of you will have visited Kim’s Oklahoma kitchen by the lake, through her IMK posts. Sadly, it was destroyed by fire, along with almost all her worldly belongings, at the end of last year. She and her husband Russ have been astonishingly positive throughout the whole experience, but rebuilding lives from scratch is never easy, particularly given that Kim also had a stroke last October.

Their daughter Pamela has organised a fundraiser for them, but so far the response has been very slow. Many people have sent their condolences, but to date there have been less than a dozen actual donations and the fundraiser is still a long way from its target amount.

A member of our IMK community is in need, and if you’ve ever written, or read and enjoyed, an In My Kitchen post, please consider making a donation. Kim has told me that one of the things she’s hoping to buy with any funds raised is a new stove, and it would be wonderful if the IMK family could help her to do that. More importantly, it’s a way of sending a message of love and support that has a real and tangible impact.

Please give whatever you can – even a small $10 paypal contribution will help. Let’s see if we can put that new stove in Kim’s kitchen!

This month’s IN MY KITCHEN is now closed!

Please join us again in March! ♥

. . . . .

As I mentioned last month, lovely IMK blogger Kim from A Little Lunch lost her Oklahoma home to fire in November 2014. A fundraiser website has now been set up by Kim’s daughter to help them get back on their feet.

Poor Kim had a brutal year – she lost her sister, than had a stroke, then her house burnt down. Please give whatever you can – every bit helps! And after you’ve donated, please spread the word via one of the sharing links on the website (or on your blog).

In my kitchen…

…are these stunning flowers – a gift from my dear friend Selma in London via Little Flowers. The old-fashioned pink roses were gently fragrant…

…but the tuberoses were magnificently perfumed…

Selma’s sourdough starter Twinkle has become so much a part of the family that she’s now included on gift cards…

In my kitchen…

…are slow braised beef shortribs. They had four hours in the oven, resulting in incredibly tender meat that fell off the bones. After an incredibly hectic December, it was a treat to be able to cook a meal as slowly as possible…

The meat and cooking liquor became the basis of a comforting lasagne…

I thought for a while that I’d trashed my Römertopf in the process (I’d tried using the top and bottom elements instead of the back fan ones)…

…but the glazed base cleaned up well in the dishwasher. The top didn’t survive quite as well, but it’s still perfectly functional…

In my kitchen…

…is 36 month aged Reggiano Parmigiano – an unbelievable Costco find at just $30/kilo…

In my kitchen…

…is a new Portuguese clay pot. I don’t need another clay pot, but I had a moment of weakness…

…especially when I realised that $28 was for the whole pot, and not just the lid…

In my kitchen…

…is a fabulous gift from my friend Amanda of Lambs’ Ears and Honey. She read in Kavey’s post about my frustrations with our box grater and surprised me with these super-sharp Microplanes…

I was every bit as excited about the intricately cut card which came with the gift…

In my kitchen…

…is a ludicrous number of figs. As I mentioned in an earlier post, branches of Mark’s tree now hang over our side of the fence, and we’ve been picking with glee…

We’ve been eating figs with feta on our crunchy sourdough bread rusks

…as well as in Jamie Oliver’s Sexiest Salad in the World

In my kitchen…

…is the last of our trombie/butternut plant – it’s amazing to think that the squash start out tiny, stay green and zucchini-like for ages, then turn into a pumpkin…

In my kitchen…

…there is always bread. These fruit loaves were inspired by my friends Annie and Selma

As always, I added too much fruit to the dough, including the leftover candied orange segments from our Christmas chocolates…

. . . . .

In my kitchen…

…is a Wagyu beef, pancetta and anchovy pizza. Known in our house as a #vegetarianfail, it was heavy on the anchovies and wickedly good…

. . . . .

In my kitchen…

…was a 55 year old bottle of Portuguese port. With the 35C days we had last week, this one started to leak and needed to be drunk. It was decanted and left to breathe for eight hours, then shared between four neighbours, Big Boy and me. It was sublime

This month’s IN MY KITCHEN is now closed!

Please join us again in February! ♥

. . . . .

Happy New Year!

In my kitchen…are gifts galore!

These beautiful lisianthus, Australian native flannel flowers and tea tree buds were a gift from my dear friend Emilie at The Clever Carrot. She knows that I’m a big fan of Little Flowers Sydney so when this posy appeared on their Instagram feed, she surprised me with a delivery…

In my kitchen…

…on my iPad…is the butterly gorgeous Kavey’s final Meet the Blogger post for 2014

In my kitchen…

…are festive foodie gifts from my Canberra blogging buddies – homegrown garlic from Ali, a bouquet of fresh herbs from Becca

…a decadent caramel pretzel creation from Fran

…smoked rice from Becca and amazing smoked garlic from Lizzy. There was also a sublime Aldi fudge from Liz, but it was eaten before a photo could be taken! Lovely Linda sent me three blocks of her handmade soap – I use it every day…

In my kitchen…

…is a bowl of homemade cranberry sauce, which was absolutely perfect with our Christmas goose. The large jar was a generous gift from Charlie at Hotly Spiced…

In my kitchen…

…was my first attempt at a 100% remilled semolina sourdough loaf. It was moderately successful, even though the dough lacked a little elasticity and tore during the shaping process..

In my kitchen…

…are teenage mutant ninja trombies. I hope Chicago John is reading this – he’ll be pleased to see trombies back in our IMK posts. These grow into a slightly different shape each season, and this year’s self sown plant is particularly vigorous. It’s also delicious – we’ve been using them in place of zucchinis in stir fries…

In my kitchen…

…are treasured bottles of homemade booze, a gift from my mate Annie in Essex. After much deliberation and tasting, we’ve decided we like the sloe gin best…

Annie also sent me some of her jelly prints! I was almost more excited about those than the gin…

In my kitchen…

…is a cookie mix jar from Nagi. I made the cookies up on Boxing Day and the boys have demolished them…

In my kitchen…

…are jars of chilli jam and tomato relish from Liz at Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard. They’re both delicious – we tried them with lamb kebabs on Boxing Day…

In my kitchen…

…is a gorgeous book of origami paper from Dotti and a wooden spoon holder that Tandy sent me all the way from South Africa via her mother and sister! It has pride of place now on my kitchen bench and gets used daily…

In my kitchen…

…are limited edition Nespresso pods from Tiny Terri, Wendy’s homemade homegrown cucumber pickles, and boozy chocolate from Pete and El…

Finally, in my kitchen…

…is a kilo of Ian and Diana’s homegrown garlic. It’s such a good time of year in our kitchen when local garlic is in season!

. . . . .

Folks, some very sad news – lovely IMK blogger Kim from A Little Lunch lost her Oklahoma home to fire late November last year. She and her husband Russ are fine, they were insured, and Kim’s emails have been amazingly positive given the circumstances. She’ll hopefully be setting up a PayPal donation link on her blog soon and then anyone who wishes to help can do so.

I’ll let you know as soon as her post is up. In the meantime, please pop over to her blog and send her your well wishes, I’m sure she’d love to hear from you!

This month’s IN MY KITCHEN is now closed!

Please join us again in January! ♥

. . . . .

In my kitchen…

…are prunings from our very old hydrangea bush. It was here when we bought the house and has always produced an abundance of purple and white flowers…

In my kitchen…

…are large tins of peaches. They were on the clearance pallet at Southern Cross Supplies for just $10 per box of 12 tins. Carol and I bought a box each of the sliced and halved fruit, then divvied them between us…

In my kitchen…

…is Charlie Louie’s delicious glacé fruit cake. We’ve been nibbling thin slices of it every night after dinner…

In my kitchen…

…is a lazy susan cheese board from Coscto. It’s made of slate and cost about $25…

I thought it would make a good alternative to the $40 cake turntables I’d been considering and it did! It rotates smoothly and evenly, and made decorating my friend Ross’ cake a doddle…

In my kitchen…

…is a magnificent bottle of extra virgin olive oil, a gift from Tania

And speaking of Tania, in my kitchen yesterday…

…was her fantastic Pizza Dip. I made it with cacciatore and ham offcuts instead of cabanossi and salami. It was a huge hit at our big family get together…

Also in my kitchen yesterday…

…was Nagi’s delicious Cheese and Garlic Crack Bread, made with a homemade sourdough loaf and Dorset cheddar…

Thanks for the pointer to the recipe, Maureen!

In my kitchen…

…are overnight no-knead sourdough loaves. I’ve taken to mixing up my dough last thing at night, leaving it on the bench, and then baking it in the morning…

Finally, in my kitchen…

were 30 packets of our sourdough starter Priscilla to share with readers for Christmas. They’ve now all been sent out, and I hope everyone enjoys baking with them! Remember to tuck your dried starter in the fridge if you’re not going to use it straight away. And if you’re already baking with a Priscilla offspring, I’d love to hear about how your bread is going!
